The woman’s body was propped against the rough bark of the tree. Traces of dried blood streaked her pallid face like brushstrokes. There was a horrifying void in her face where her left eye should have been.
When a young woman is found murdered in the woods, Detective Mackenzie Price and her partner Nick Blackwood are first on the scene. The harrowing discovery leaves them both breathless—the victim’s left eye has been removed. Mackenzie identifies the victim as Whitney Smythe , a lost soul with troubled past, and makes another shocking discovery—Whitney recently gave birth.
Reeling from the scene, Mackenzie and her team soon discover that this case is very similar to a murder that happened thirty years ago. But the killer was captured and died behind bars, so how can the two murders possibly be connected?
When a second body washes ashore with her left eye missing, Mackenzie is certain— there’s a serial killer on the loose and she has to stop them before they pick their next victim.
Mackenzie soon discovers that both victims were connected to a commune just outside of town, a breakthrough that changes the whole course of the investigation. But every step Mackenzie takes towards discovering who the sadistic serial killer is puts her closer to mortal danger. Because someone close to her has a personal connection to the case—and they’re not telling the truth…
A completely gripping and pulse-pounding crime thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat flipping the pages deep into the night. Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Karin Slaughter and Robert Dugoni.
Detective Mackenzie Price and her partner, Detective Nick Blackwood were shocked when they were called to the latest murder. The young woman had been brutally disfigured and one eye was missing. Then another young woman was discovered - dead in the same manner. With a case from thirty years prior with the same MO, Mack was sure they were somehow linked. When the women were identified and the links to a commune from outside of town discovered, Mack and Nick were disgusted and horrified at what was going on at The Farm.
With secrets blocking the investigation, even from within the team, Mack wasn't sure where to look next. But they continued on with evidence strengthening and showing definite links to the old case. But how? With the thirty year difference, the age gaps wouldn't work - or would they?
Out of Sight is the 6th in the Detective Mackenzie Price series by Ruhi Choudhary and it was intense! Fast paced, gritty and filled with tension, I'm really enjoying this series. Mack is a tough character - they call her Mad Mack - but is she softening? Highly recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Many thanks to both Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Out of Sight. This book is #6 in the Detective Mackenzie Price series and the expected publication date is December 11, 2023.
3.5 Stars, rounded up. (If only there hadn't been that pesky cliffhanger.)
We MIGHT have a new serial killer in town.
This is the first book in the Detective Mackenzie Price series I've read and I wish I had read the previous books before reading this one. The storyline is rather intricate and at times I found myself a little confused about what exactly was going on. (This may have been contributed to by the jumps back and forth in time.) However! I loved Mad Mack and Nick!!
The plot involves a cult, a police cover-up, and multiple murders. The further I got into the book, the more twisted the truth became and the more hooked I was to see what was going to happen next!!
I wish Out of Sight hadn't ended with a cliffhanger (grr) but I probably will read the next book when it's released.
love this series, really hope the next one is released soon
just got one question.. where has justin went the last few books? he got promoted and was austin’s partner, but austin basically done everything himself and now austin has a new partner?
what happened to justin, feel i’ve missed something
I’m going to be honest. When I first started this book the first chapter made me mad. I almost changed books.
But I love this series and the characters, flaws and all. For a while it felt a bit disjointed for me because it’s been a long while since we have visited Mad Mack. But then I felt the click and the author had me hooked. This book had a lot going on. And I’ll be honest (again), I was looking for a certain aspect and it was missing until a certain point…thus my feeling of it not flowing with last book.
All in all it was excellent and I’m looking forward to what’s to come.
WoW this series has been Excellent from the very first book called Our Daughter's Bones back in 2020.....
Out of Sight by Ruhi Choudhary is the sixth book in the excellent Detective Mackenzie Price series and it has just been superb!
When a woman's body is found with one eye missing, this launches a re-opening of a decades long case. Detective Mackenzie Price her partner Nick Blackwood starts to investigate this only to find a cult which is like a religion which lead to a big police cover-up of former drug addicted women.
Now, Mackenzie and Nick need to be quick and find the murderer before it's too late.
It was brilliant especially as it was full of twists and turns throughout and fast paced. The characters were brilliant and I really like Detective Mackenzie Price and her partner Nick Blackwood they make a great team.
I highly recommend this series.
Big Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher Bookouture for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
A young woman is found dead in the woods, beaten to death and her left eye removed. Mackenzie aka Mad Mack and her partner, Nick Blackwood are on the case. It is eventually revealed that thirty years ago another woman was killed in the same way and her baby was taken. Baby Rose was never found, but bones linking to her were found in the forest behind her house. Secrets are revealed and that case is reopened. A second woman is found dead in the same way and Mack and Nick think they have a serial killer on their hands. The women also tie to a cult, not a religious one but more of a commune, where both of the women gave birth and their children still live there even though their mothers left. Will Mack and Nick find out who is behind these horrendous deaths before anyone else ends up dead?
This is the 6th book in the Detective Mackenzie Price series and although it can be read as a standalone, I have enjoyed this series so much, that I recommend you read them all. In this story ethics and morals come to a head and have Mack questioning those around her. There are a lot of lies and secrets and Mack will need to reconcile her feelings towards others who have lied and perhaps broken the law, while she herself has her own secrets. This is a dark police thriller with some horrendous crimes and obviously a creepy and psychotic killer, but I liked how this story played out. Mack and Nick are great investigators, and I like how they put the clues together. There were some roadblocks they had to get through, some put up by their own Captain, that had my spidey senses tingling. The mystery was intricate and well plotted and had me turning the pages quickly to see what was going to happen next and if any of my hunches were correct. With several twists, surprising actions and a hook to lead us into the next book, I finished this one with a satisfied sigh. Another great book in the Detective Mackenzie Price series that I recommend to those who enjoy crime thrillers and police procedurals.
A digital copy of this book was provided to me by NetGalley and Bookouture. The opinions are my own and freely given.
This is book 6 in the Detective Mackenzie Price series.
When a woman's body is found with one eye missing, this launches a re-opening of a decades long case.
This story involves a "cult" like religion, a police cover-up and former drug addicted women. This is a very fast-paced story and Mackenzie and Nick are rushing to find the murderer before its too late. They are also trying to bring the "cult" leader down to stop what is happening in the woods.
I have read Mackenzie from the beginning and although, you don't have to, the author does a great job of recapping the previous stories, without giving too much away, I recommend this series and therefore, if you haven't read Mackenzie Price from the beginning, I urge you to do so.
Book 6 in the brilliant Detective Mackenzie Price series.
When a young woman is found murdered in the woods, Detective Mackenzie Price and her partner Nick Blackwood are first on the scene. Well that opening chapter has me instantly hooked! So many secrets and lies kept this plot fast paced and gripping. I couldn't get through it fast enough. Great book!
Mack and Nick are back on a case that is confusing them. Why after years of silence does it seem like a killer has returned? Or, could there be a copy cat killer out there? Out of Sight is a very twisted story that draws you in slowly and won’t let you go until you read the last page. Recommended series to all who enjoy reading action packed thriller suspenseful books. I do encourage you to read the series in order as you will know more what makes Mackenzie and Nick who they are. I can’t wait to see what happens next in the Detective Mackenzie Price series! Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
would like to thank netgalley and the publishers for this book
a cult murder eyeballs missing from bodies
when mack and nick arrive at the scene of murder they discover a grisly detail.... that one of the victims eye balls is missing and this murder also hints back to another murder that happened years ago
could these murders be linked even though the murderer has died in prison... its a puzzle all right but as the clues keep coming and with hints to the farm where the mysterious cult live, could they somehow be involved
as mack and nick investigate things start to get cloudy and with evidence that point to one of their own its not long before an arrest is made...
book 6 in the series and its my first time with this author, i did struggle through some of this book as i have missed the build up with all the characters but it seems a good read
I believe it was Choudhary who led me down the path and addiction for crime fiction. It’s been a while since Price surfaced. She is faced with some ethical choices and I was glad to see she had altered her stance a bit when it came to others’ choices. The plot was like a maze within a maze within a circle. Every time I got out of one maze, I was sucked into yet another dimension of the story. It kept me on my toes. An important development is made between Nick and Mack and it’s about time!!! A new colleague joins the squad and I can’t wait to be in her business and suss out her story. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early copy.
I loved this entire series! Couldn't put it down and want more. I wish there could have been a better version of what happened with Nick and Mack (I don't mean smut). Maybe seeing Nick's side to the story.
I didn't see that coming! This is a must read. In fact, you should read them all. Great writing, story line and likable characters. What's not to love?
Thanks to netgalley for providing this advanced copy for the purpose of review. I have read all the previous books in the series so knew I would enjoy this. It didn't disappoint and I found myself whizzing through this. I can't wait to read more.
Mackenzie and her team have a brutal serial killer on their hands. It seems like the murders are related to something that happened years and years ago, but how is that possible? It also seems like a strange cult is a part of the mystery.
Another great add to the series! The story itself is captivating, and kept me reading the night away, but I enjoyed getting to know the team better, even more than the main plot. I liked the flow in this book, and how everything started to make sense towards the end. A book, and a series not to be missed!
Omg what a book! The detective Price series is absolutely amazing I completely forgot my love for the vharacters, Mack , Nick and Sully what a team. This case of a dead women missing an eye brings back old cases for Sully and Nick with troubling secrets at rhe heart of this new murder. REVIEW TO FOLLOW
Ruhi Choudhary has done it again! I have been a fan from book one. Mad Mack is back on the case with Nick, they’re after a killer that seems to have come back after years of silence, or has he? Is it a copycat?
Ruhi kept me engrossed from the first word to the last
This is a great book. I have read and loved the whole series. If you like murder mysteries that are action packed you will love this book. You get invested in the lives of Mackenzie and Nick. I highly recommend.
A Riveting Thriller that Keeps You on the Edge of Your Seat Ruhi Choudhary's "Out of Sight (Detective Mackenzie Price Book 6)" is a five-star masterpiece that delivers a chilling and intense ride from the very first page. This installment in the Detective Mackenzie Price series is a testament to Choudhary's skill in crafting suspenseful narratives and complex characters.
The story begins with a gruesome murder that sets the tone for a gripping tale. Detective Mackenzie Price, along with her partner Nick Blackwood, is thrust into a case that becomes increasingly macabre with each revelation. The vivid descriptions of the crime scenes evoke a sense of unease, making the reader feel as though they are right there alongside the investigators.
What sets this book apart is the intricate web of connections and mysteries woven into the plot. The removal of the victim's left eye adds a uniquely sinister element, and as Mackenzie delves deeper into the investigation, the discovery of a similar murder from thirty years ago adds layers of complexity. The suspense is masterfully maintained as Mackenzie races against time to catch a serial killer who seems to be recreating a long-dead murderer's modus operandi.
Detective Mackenzie Price shines as a protagonist. Her determination, intelligence, and vulnerability make her a character readers can invest in. The personal stakes are raised when Mackenzie discovers a link between the victims and a commune outside of town, adding a new dimension to the investigation. Choudhary skillfully develops Mackenzie's character arc, allowing readers to witness her growth and resilience in the face of mounting danger.
The tension escalates with each turn of the page, keeping readers guessing until the final revelation. The author expertly navigates the balance between plot twists and character development, ensuring that the emotional weight of the story resonates long after the last page is turned.
"Out of Sight" is not just a crime thriller; it's a psychological rollercoaster that explores the darkness lurking beneath seemingly ordinary lives. Ruhi Choudhary has once again proven herself as a master storyteller, delivering a compelling narrative with a relentless pace. Fans of Detective Mackenzie Price will find this installment to be a thrilling and satisfying addition to the series.
Thanks to Choudhary, the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Out of Sight, the sixth novel to feature Detective Mackenzie Price of the Lakemore, Washington PD.
A young woman is found in the woods, beaten to death and her left eye removed. Mack and her partner, Nick Blackwood, are astonished to learn that thirty years ago another woman was killed in the same way and think that they may be dealing with a serial killer when another woman is found dead with her left eye removed.
I enjoyed Out of Sight, which has an eventful plot with some good twists. There is a lot to unpack in the novel as not only does it have a murder investigation, there are quite a few chickens coming home to roost for various characters.
Detective Mackenzie Price is uptight about following procedure, but her colleagues are a bit more flexible and now she has to deal with what that flexibility has caused. She initially loses trust in them, until she comes to her own crossroad and begins to better understand that flexibility. It’s a neat ironic touch, if not quite in character. Will we see a more mellow Mack from now on? I’m not holding my breath.
The plot is quite intricate as it offers all kinds of permutations. They quickly establish that the recent victims were former members of a cult like commune, so various characters associated with it come under suspicion, then there’s the husband of the original victim, who is obviously keeping secrets and everyone else involved is lying about something. It’s a terrible tangle that gets resolved with an unusual solution. There is never a dull moment as the novel mixes the present with the past in flashback narratives. This gives the reader a better overview of events and the decisions taken at the time, but I felt it was a bit overdone.
Out of Sight is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
This is the 6th book in the series, but is a stand alone mystery. I haven't read the previous books but I didn't feel lost. This book was filled with action and tension from the start. I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting.
Detective Mackenzie Price and her partner Nick are first on the scene of a dead woman missing her left eye. As if that wasn't bad enough, the woman had recently given birth and the baby was nowhere to be found. The M.O. is similar to a murder 30 years ago, but that person was captured and died in prison. When another woman washes up on shore missing her left eye, Mackenzie knows there is a serial killer in the area, and she needs to stop them before they kill again.
Mackenzie is smart, determined, and tough. She relentlessly follows every lead to close in on the killer. The book has all the elements you look for in an exciting thriller, including a creepy commune (or is it a cult?) and a sinister, but charming, leader. Mackenzie just knows the leader is a sleezeball up to no good, she just can't seem to prove it. Yet. And just how wide does the corruption go?
Mackenzie will stop at nothing, including losing her own life, to protect the community and catch the culprit. I loved her tenacity and would definitely want her to get me justice if something bad happened to me. Once the mystery is solved, the book ended on an intriguing cliffhanger...I can't wait to read the next book in the series. In fact, I'll probably go back and read the series from the start.
If you like badass women, lots of action and twisty thrillers pick this book up. You won't be disappointed.
I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from NetGalley and Bookouture. All opinions are my own.
Out of Sight by Ruhi Choudhary is the best of this wonderful series to date. People open their hearts in a way they haven’t in the past and it is heartening, although difficult to have a heart and be a cop at the same time. They had a murder. One of her eyes had been gouged out, post-mortem, thankfully. Who could do such a thing? Why? It harkened back to a crime years earlier, just as gruesome but more poignant and it happened while her teen-aged son had been in the house and her baby daughter was taken. The baby’s bones had ostensibly been found a year later. The husband’s life was over. He hunkered down to raise his son, who had died later, unrelated. They were all buried in his backyard. His heart was broken. Now they needed to talk to him. Would it break him?
Mack, know fondly as Mad Mack, was a fearsome detective. She never let things drop, but people were acting strangely now. Her boss, who had been at the original crime scene was acting the strangest of all. She looked at the old file and saw some problems. They called in his ex-partner, now retired. He added some things that weren’t in the file. Then it happened again. This case was going to break Mack, she could feel it. Her relationships were changing. This was just too much. What a great character she is. Well-written and engaging. We feel her pain, and her joy. Choudhary writes a good police procedural, although, thankfully, this doesn’t happen every day. The plot is excellent and, as so often happens, rooted in the past. Excellent read.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Out of Sight by Bookoutre, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Bookoutre #RuhiChoudhary #OutOfSight
Mackenzie Price is back with another case to solve!
A body of a girl was found deep in the woods but her left eye is gouged out. The case is eerily similar to another case that happened nearly thirty years ago when Sully, Mackenzie's sergeant was a rookie cop but the killer is already caught and is behind the bars. Mackenzie and Nick then take over the case, wondering if there are any similarities between the previous case and this case. However, when another body of a woman was found, in the similar fashion, both Mackenzie and Nick find that both women are from a place called The Farm, a cult place where they breed the babies and give away. Mackenzie must find the killer before he or she attacks again.
This was actually a fast-paced thriller, unputdownable and a page turner. There were so many twists and turns and many of them are unexpected twists and turns. The story starts with the scene where Mackenzie was arrested and so as a reader you are wondering what is going to happen to Mackenzie as you read on through the book. The book is also well written and gripping and I like the fact that the author made the reader feel like they are a part of the story. Overall, this book completely worth four stars.
This is the sixth book of the Mackenzie Price series and so if you want to read this book, it is highly recommended to read from Book 1 onwards as some of Mackenzie's past is often unraveled in the book.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
I’m a great fan of Ruhi Choudhary’s crime novels, having read everyone one of her series set in Lakemore and featuring Detectives Mackenzie Price and Nick Blackmore. On this occasion they become involved in a case of the brutal murders of two young women, both of which bear the hallmarks of a previous case from thirty-one years ago. As usual, nothing is straightforward. There are lots of false trails, suspects and dead ends before the case comes to a gripping conclusion. Price and Blackwood are a team who have worked together for many years. They have a great working relationship as well as a close personal friendship which constantly teases the reader with a hint of ‘will they won’t they?’. Mackenzie has a troubled past, memories of which regularly resurface, which happens during this case. The author has created a great series with characters you can get behind and stories that keep you reading late into the evening, wanting to know what happens next. Yet another great read with relatable characters, an unputdownable storyline and a teaser right at the end which give a hint of what we can expect from the next book. A well written story that grabs your attention right from the first page. Highly recommended. My thanks to Bookouture, the author and Netgalley for an ARC of Out of Sight in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley and to the author for the opportunity to read an early copy of Out of Sight for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own. The expected publication date is December 11, 2023.
Rating 4/5 stars
This is # 6 in the Mackenzie Price series by this author. This is the first book of this series I have read and I wish I had started with the first book. You do not need to read them in order, but I urge you to do so as there were some key information that would be explained better if you read from the beginning. I find myself confused on some aspects that would have been further explained had I read from book one, especially with the time jumps.
Mackenzie is a strong willed character and I love how the author wrote her. Her relationship with Nick is refreshing as well. The plot involves a cult and a police coverup that spans thirty years, and involves multiple murders. The story draws you in and is a fast paced thriller, that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was hooked from the beginning , When a woman's body is found with one eye missing, launching a re-opening of a decades long case. The twists and turns kept you wanting more and the characters were all intriguing, finding out secrets of each of them that leads them to their decisions made. I only wish it didn’t end on a cliffhanger but I can’t wait to see what comes next!
A woman's body is discovered and one eye has been removed. The discovery has a great effect on one of the older detectives who is reminded of a case from 30 years ago. Was the wrong killer convicted or is there a copycaton the loose? Out of Sight is the 6th book in the Detective Mackenzie Price series, set in America. The detectives are naturally repulsed by the mutilation of the woman's body and there is soon a second with the same post mortem eye removal. The women in the present day as well as the one in the past had all given birth recently which adds another layer of tension and complexity to the case. Sully is sure he caught the killer 30 years ago but now Mack raises doubts. Added to this uncertainty is the return of Nick's former partner who is involved in drugs. The chapters are short so the plot rattles along quickly with twists and developments in the case and the lives of the detectives. From a personal perspective, Mack is struggling with her feelings in this book. She is concerned about Sully and thinks he is lying about the past case. Her emotions are confused in relation to her partner Nick and she is haunted by flashbacks from her own troubled past. I really like Mack's character and the way she has developed over the series so far. Out of Sight is a tense and dramatic detective thriller.
I love it when new cases have similarities to old cases. The first few questions that pop up are: Are they connected? Or is there a copy cat in town? Maybe the person that was arrested at the time, was not the real culprit?
These are questions Mad Mac, her partner Nick and their team have to find answers for and they soon discover things they hoped they would never have had to find out. But it is what it is and once again, time is ticking away and although judges and the likes should work together with the police, the truth is often very different.
They are finding themselves with their backs against the wall and it's time for Nick and Mac to open their bag of tricks and think out of the box. Sometimes a (wo)man has got to do what a (wo)man has got to do to bring light to the darkness.
Sometimes people lie because they follow others or don't want to hurt them, but it's something they will be forced to live with for many years.
A very, very good book with lots of twists I did not see coming at all. I just adore it when an author can do this to a story and drive the reader insane in the most positive way. 5 stars
This is the first book I've read in this series and the beginning of it had me thinking "What? How can that be?" But I knew there had to be an explanation, even if it didn't become apparent until much later. And while there are numerous characters (pretty much expected with a police thriller), the author does a good job of giving enough of an explanation as to who they are so you aren't lost.
There are so many threads for MacKenzie and Nick to follow as they try to solve the gruesome case of the dead woman who had one of her eyes removed. And the case becomes more complicated when they learn there was a case over 30 years ago with a similar situation. So many times I thought I had the murders solved but then there was another twist. The relationships between the main characters and their Sergeant are complicated, especially as some past decisions come to light. I loved how Mack would flash back to wisdom departed to her by her grandmother.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Murders in a small town always raise a lot of feelings. When said body is a young woman who has had an eye removed - the local police are stumped. The only murder like this occurred decades before and the guilty party was sent to jail. So do they have a copycat killer or did they get the wrong guy first time around?
There is a local "business", which is really a sketchy cult run by a charming but sleazy Svengaliesque leader. There is possible police cover up and corruption. Young women with drug dependencies. And the possibility that not everything they know is true.
Fast paced, taut thriller with a subtle friends to lovers potential romance. Mackenzie is less "Mad Mack" and more determines, focused detective who takes no nonsense. She has a great partner in Nick. He's the empath of the relationship, softening her often cutting comments.
There is enough recap within the story to understand the relationship between Nick and Mack and the others without being bogged down in an information dump. I hadn't read any of the previous stories before this one and I was perfectly happy learning this new world. However, the other books are now on my ever-growing TBR!
