The baron’s daughter, Alessandra Barrett, has worn a mask from a young age due to an injury. Many say if you were to see the face behind the mask, you would be cursed and die soon afterward. She is seen as a ghost, avoided by all who visit the baron's home until she becomes the duke’s wife.
No one could understand why the duke would pick such a wife. Did he wish to die?
What would become of the girl who once hid in the shadows but now had the spotlight on her as the duke’s masked wife?
What would everyone say if they were to learn the truth that she was in a contracted marriage with the duke?
I have really liked this series so far but this particular book, while still very good was not as interesting as the others, there are new characters being introduced such as Alessandra’s uncle and it seems as though so many people are gold diggers in this series and plenty of evil to go around so far, the classic stereotype of rich people looking down on others who aren’t as fortunate and thinking they can talk down to them and order them around such as the duke’s mother trying to bully Alessandra and the duke into not remaining married. The romance between the two is moving way to slow to hold my interest much longer since this series is so long so I will read the next book and if it doesn’t pick up soon on the romance then I’m not going to read 14 more books for it to develop that slowly. Other than that it is still a good story, just that romances are usually not nearly so slow to get started.
The storyline is good, but the writing feels a bit amateur. With the number of grammar mistakes, the book really needs proper proofreading and editing. Some parts were so redundant that I ended up skipping over them. As it stands, it’s hard to justify spending nearly $90 to read the whole 19-book series, so I stopped at book 3. With better editing and tighter writing, it would be enjoyable enough to finish the series. Honestly, it might work better as a single book priced at $4.99 instead of 19 separate installments.
I am enjoying the story and look forward to what will happen next. I feel that the proof reading should have done a better job. Some sentences are missing words or have a wrong word. Some of the things that were said is coming from the wrong era. For example: Being thrown under the carriage. It just sounds silly. Still it gets the point across. I didn't notice this in books 1, 2, and 3, but book 4 is ripe with errors.
Loved this book. The relationship between Alessandra and Edgar are heart warming. Also Alfred is the classical Butler and Best Friend. I adore him immensely.
