this is 100% total and complete filler. is it fun filler? oh yeah. but its still filler, nonetheless.
its short and sweet and gives off novella vibes even though its a second installment. there is a tiny bit of plot progression for the overall storyline, which helps make this sequel feel worth reading and provides a segue for the next book. its just too bad it only comes in right towards the end.
but for readers who are reading this series for the tension between rowan and orion, then you will be very happy with this, because im pretty sure this book was written specifically for you guys. the relationship between rowan and orion is really the entire focus of this one.
so even though i didnt find this as action-packed or as exciting as the first book, im still looking forward to continuing the series.
I called it! So this second book doesn't keep me on my toes as the first book did, owing to the lack of actions in Lord of Embers. However, there are a few things that I love such that some of my previous remarks on what I find lacking before, is finally tackled here with the majority of the plot centering around Rowan's character development!
I like the City of Thorns Rowan, but I love Lord of Embers Rowan more. I find her a bit unsophisticated in the previous book but Rowan's growth and evolution as she discovered who and what she is was fascinating. Crawford successfully portrayed her as empowering without making it seem overbearing by flawlessly connecting all the events/people/places to her characters build up throughout.
Meanwhile, Orion on the other hand is freaking unhinged and I love him for that! We were given a bit of Orion's past before, sure, but I wish there had been more time spent externalizing him but alas, his attractiveness was the only thing that was accentuated. Be that as it may, we get to see more of Orion's persona in this book and I like that Crawford left me wondering as to who's the bad guy now.
Another point for the book is that Orion and Rowan are finally making babies! And not a depressing one at it too like the freaking abomination it was previously. The exchanges between Orion and Rowan are up to par. They plainly can't deny their attraction, but both also want to reign which adds tension and humor to the plot. And I believe in essence, Orion does care for Rowan but is at odds with himself. I just wished Crawford would push it a bit more so the connection between the two is well-built.
That being said, the plot is not as remarkable. I see why some of it serves as continuative to whatever will happen next but I do find some of the chapters flat with subjunctive mood and poor wording. The dialogue still needs an overhaul to make it more genuine and nuanced. The whole psychological theory is still happening too but not as prominent as it did in the first book where I simply feel like nitpicking.
This book took a different direction than I expected it to be but as a character > plot person, you can say I wasn't entirely disappointed. In fact, I can't wait for a good showdown between Orion and Rowan in the next installment, in the hope Rowan would kick his ass with how the book ends.
These books just do it for me! I’d been in a weeks’ long book slump, and when I heard that CN Crawford was about to release this bad boy, I begged her for an advanced copy. I fell in love with Rowan, Orion, and this world in City of Thorns, and I’ve been dying to read this book ever since I finished the previous one. And okay, holy WOW, I read this one way too fast because it was so damn good. The characters, the plot, the pacing. Like I said, these books just do it for me.
Now I need to read everything in CN Crawford’s backlist while I wait for the third book!!!
It hurts my heart to give this such a low rating because I adored the first book. This second installment just did not have the spark the first one did. Hardly anything seemed to happen, but at the same time everything that did happen seemed super rushed.
Development of Rowan and Orien seemed nonexistent. I missed the world building, story developments, revelations, and character interactions from the first book.
I hope the 3rd will be more reminiscent of the 1st!
Book two in CN Crawford's Demon Queen Trails Lord of Embers was excellent!!! I love this world of demons that she has created. The storyline is very well paced with action and intrigue and the main characters as well as secondary characters unique and different. This book picks up after Rowan is kicked out of the city of thorns but when she comes across some clues on how to kill the fake king Cambriel she heads back to the city of thorns to fight for her right to become their new queen but Orion is their to stop her. To keep Orion from killing her they come up with a deal if Rowan makes a blood oath to tell him the kings weakness he will sever his oath to kill her but to do that they will have to go to the underworld and face the dying god Tammuz! I'm once more in lust with a book character! Tammuz is a beautiful dark dangerous god with looks to kill and I want him!!!! Orion is beautiful and sexy but Tammuz is all things dark and forbidden and I loved his interaction with both Orion and Rowan. I'm hoping maybe Crawford will have a book for this delicious god. The chemistry and push and pull relationship between Orion and Rowan just keeps getting better but when two such strong characters are battling for the throne theirs bound to words spoken and actions taken that will tear these two lovers apart. CN Crawford is a fabulous storyteller who writers sexy reads in fantasy worlds full of all kinds of unusual characters. Coming soon book 3 Garden of Serpents can't wait!!! Until next time Luv's💕💋
Confess! “I don’t know if I’m Mortana!” The confession surprised even me. “I don’t remember what happened to Mom. Part of me liked killing the demon hunter. He deserved it. I didn’t have any control over this.” The confessions were flowing out. “Once, I forgot to pay for a coffee at Starbucks, and I didn’t go back. It was a latte. When I’m alone, I say random words like ‘corn muffin’ and ‘oyster crackers’ in ridiculous accents. I have a priest fantasy. When I was depressed in high school, I spent a month doing nothing but watching Love Island, and I started to speak in an English accent. I had a sex dream about Orion two days ago, but then he turned into a spider, and it was still kind of hot? I pulled the fire alarm once in high school when I had a test—” Rowan
The little smile on her lips was a dare, an invitation. I sensed her need, desire rippling from her body. Her allure was a command I had to obey. She dropped her backpack on the floor. “What exactly does that mean, ruin me with a kiss?” I trailed a finger over her throat, watching her body react. “I’m the last incubus in the world. After me, no one else could ever compare. You’ll be ruined forever, love.”- Orion
“The universe was made from chaos, and to chaos it will return. Order is as ephemeral as ashes scattered on the wind. It is not the natural state.” - Tammuz

These covers are so fu#king wasted on those books, honestly putting that beautiful art as the face of this disappointment is such a tragedy it's criminal. In my humble opinion here's What this book should be called “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐎𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐩𝐢𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐨𝐭 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲.” I believe Rowan would approve. rip ]|I{•---------⋘⋙---------------•⪼⦕࿅⦖⪻•---------------⋘⋙---------•}I|[ Look the first book, i blamed myself i put too much expectations on it and when it didn't deliver i got crushed back to earth, 𝐒𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞. And despite that failure to entertain i still wanted to continue with this series, cause 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 of a great story was there nonetheless. Unfortunately the second installment was not better. And maybe i deserve this for believing this book would redeem the last one, after the author wasted my time by focusing on a poor man's version of a behavior analysis of an Immortal Incubus- Cause you know that's what i want to read when reading about a 𝐒𝐄𝐗 𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐎𝐍'𝐒 𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐇 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐄. Despite that aggressively generic story i actually believed we were done with the boring stuff and would now dive in a world of Lust and hatred, lies and manipulation, power and love and the carnal passion of an enemies to lovers story instead. I'm not even my usual petty self here I'm just so extremely sad. I'm giving this 2 stars, maybe later when my disappointment won't be as fresh I could give it a low 3 stars but for now 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝟐 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐬.
The plot was full of surprising twists and turns, preventing it from becoming too predictable. The author's well-thought-out magic system added an extra layer of depth to the story, making it a unique and engaging read.
Despite the book has its merits, there was still a certain feeling of something missing that lingered with me after reading. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. From a romantic standpoint, I believe that more tension, passion, and yearning between the central characters could have elevated the emotional resonance of the book. Furthermore, there were a few points that felt a bit forced and didn't quite align with the overall narrative.
However, it's appreciable that this second book showed a bit of the male protagonist's perspective for the readers, which would make it easier to understand his personality. With this new insight, I can now immerse myself more fully into the intricacies of the third book in the series.
I had very high hopes for this book. It all came crashing down on me and my expectations. My dislike of this book runs deep. I wanted more of what got me hooked on the first book. This one was more character-driven (and it just didn't work for me with this story).
If I'm being honest I also started an intense dislike of Orion. I understand he has his motives and reasonings to justify his reactions but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Rowen was just meh this time around. I wanted to root for her but I couldn't find it in myself too. With her, I don't have a specific reason though.
I don't think I'll be continuing with this series. Maybe when I become desperate enough because I have *no* books to read I'll give this a shot? Right now I'm just angry about it all.
I can't remember why I gave the first book 4 stars. Was the writing also this bad? Were the characters this annoying then too? Was it also such a snoozefest? I didn't like this book at all. Everything that needed to be discovered was found out by chance and very conveniently. The characters did things completely out of the blue, with no real motivation. I'm so confused and disappointed.
2.5 stars... oh I'm so disappointed 😭. After the first book, I was so excited for the story to continue, but unfortunately it missed the mark.
I skimmed through 80% of this book and missed literally nothing. It was mostly filler. The miscommunication/disbelief trope was so overused and underwhelming and the ending was boring and predictable.
This book had such potential. I hope the next book redeems the story.
You want a book with zero (character) development That is fast paced and nothing happens the whole time That leaves you empty and feeling zero emotions
then that is the book for you, enjoy this sad sequel to a pretty decent start to a new fantasy series
Very disappointed on the execution of this, it feels like not much even happened. There was no further relationship development or even complexity added to the plot.
As a sequel to City of Thorns, I had so many unanswered questions going into this one. I can honestly say that for the few that were answered, an entirely new group was formed lol. Entertaining, interesting, and thought provoking, this book had it all. I might have a little crush on Tammuz and hope that he makes an appearance in the next one! If you love paranormal urban fantasy, this is one to add to your TBR! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Spice: 🌶 Readability: Easy to understand Flow: Fast Pacing
Good. Definitely more of a filler book but we started to finally get somewhere at the end there and we got some new answers. Orion is also a little unexpected. He's technically pretty old but he acts so young and vulnerable at times which is different. Im excited to see how everything plays out in the 3rd book too.
“After me, no one else could ever compare. You’ll be ruined forever, love.”
Is there anything more satisfying that a book 2 that ABSOLUTELY delivers and kicks major a$$?! This was epic. Rowan finding out the truth about herself and learning to embrace her demon side was pure 🔥 and Orion, what am I going to do with you?! That dark, twisted soul of yours needs to find the light. Maybe a redhead light 👀 Did someone said trials for the crown?! H€ll yeah! Please and thank you! I’ll be looking forward to see Rowan kick some insane a$$ 😎 and in case you’re wondering if you should read this, let me just tell you YES and leave you with: demons, fated throne, fire power, demon hunters, dying Gods, ENEMIES TO LOVERS ‼️❣️5 stars ⭐️
“How is it you can talk so much and clarify so little? It’s like the world’s shittiest superpower.”
Ah, unfortunately this sequel fell a bit flat. I really felt like this sequel went in a complete different direction than the first book and we got a bit lost from the original plot. It almost felt like a connecting novella? There was definitely some good character development and lots of tension between Orion and Rowan. Things did eventually pick up towards the end of the book, and there were a lot of questions from the first book answered, so I am hopeful that the next book will get back to more of the original settings in the city of demons.
This book was super disappointing… the entire first half of the book was unnecessary and then the last half of the book rushed the juicy stuff? Left me v unsatisfied. Did I still read it in a day? Sure did.
As much as I was anticipating this and waiting for the book to come out, it fell short. Not enough tension between our two main characters and honestly, a whole lot of nothing occurred in the book.
Also, I used to think Rowan was smart but she really isn’t. Spent too long monologuing at the end and was mad when Orion beat her to the punch. I understand it was a shitty thing to do but damn stop giving speeches and do what you came here to do, you know?
And this has very similar vibes to other books by the author (The Hades Castle trilogy) in the connections between our main character and her mistaken identity. Like, same thing exactly, and I wanted something fresh and new.
Mind blowing good. Every page kept getting better and better. This book totally drew me in and I did not want to stop reading. C.N. Crawford's words are so mesmerizing.
3.5⭐️ Another adventure with Rowan & Orion, but this book left me a little wanting? This book feels like it's bridging the gap between novel one & three, and left me somewhat confused a few times? Regardless, I still want to move straight into the third novel to reach the conclusion of this story.
Book two in The ember queen trials C.N. Crawford Made an awesome world with demons in it. I think it's cool to learn more and more about it.The storyline is very well paced With action, romance and A good plot. And The main and side characters are All Unique and different. This book picks up after rowan is kicked out of The city of thorns ( The demon city ). When Rowan finds out how to kill the fake King Cambriel, she heads back to town. She goes back to fight for her rights and become the queen of the city. however, Orion is here who wants to stop her and become the king himself. Together they make and blood oath so that orion can't kill rowan. In return, she must tell you how to kill the king. In order for this oath to continue, they must go together to the underworld where they meet Tammuz, the dying god.
I really love Tammuz! Mysteriously dangerous and beautiful God. The chemistry and push and Pull relationship between orion and Rowan has only increased in this book! Orion and Rowan are getting better but When Two strong characters are battling for The throne theirs bound to words spoken and action that are taken that will tear these Two apart and The love for each other. The world building is so easy to get into and is so good written.
If you like a good fantasy with lots of exciting moments and romance then I definitely recommend the books by CN Crawford! she's really good
This was worse than the first book, which I didn’t love. Why read the second one then? People love this series and I wanted to give it a chance.
I wouldn’t even call this a PNR because there is no romance. It’s just 1 explicit scene between two enemies who consistently say they hate each other. There’s no tension. Orion is bat shit crazy and Rowan is naive and thinks she’s a psychologist (which I find her use of psychological terms insulting).
There’s no plot. We did get a underwhelming training montage, though.
The tension!!! The enemies vibes!!! The adventure!! I’m here for it all! Loved the first book and loved the second even more! I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here!!!!
I am convinced that C.N. Crawford is my new favorite author now, 5 stars!
Lord of Embers is a continuation from the first book. This book was the definition of on the edge of my seat. I completely read this book in a day. I'm sooooo hype for the next book. Though I was a little annoyed of the events of the end of the book.
This is a paranormal romance book, but this romance story is hella different. I don't even know if you would call this a romance at the point (lol). IT IS DEFINITELY A LOVERS-HATE type of romance. We honestly don't even know if they are going to even live happily ever after at the end.
I love how it's so action packed. There is not a single dull moment which is why I had ate this book up by accident. The world building is so easy to get into and everything makes sense logically. I think anybody who loves a good fantasy, paranormal romance should read this series ASAP! PLEASEEEEE DO!
