The time for talking is over. Now it’s time to kill.
When the victim of a brutal car bomb attack is identified as a senior executive at one of the UK’s biggest oil companies, DCI Jane Phillips and the Major Crimes Unit are tasked with finding the three shadowy figures seen fleeing the scene.
Phillips begins to suspect that the attack may be the work of eco-terrorists, a theory that gains weight when, days later, the CEO of an airline is fatally stabbed in broad daylight.
With a global energy conference due to arrive in town and the eyes of the world on Manchester, the pressure mounts to stop the gang before they strike again.
But as Phillips and the team chase down the killers, it soon becomes clear that someone else is pulling their strings – a hidden Svengali hellbent on destroying the world’s biggest polluters.
Can Jane catch the gang and track down their leader in time to stop the next attack? Or will she find herself struggling to break through the Deadly Veil?

"Deadly Veil" marks the tenth installment in the Detective Jane Phillips series by OMJ Ryan, and it's a testament to Ryan's skill that the series remains as compelling as ever. In this latest adventure, readers are plunged into a high-stakes investigation following a brutal car bomb attack on a senior executive of a major UK oil company. The plot thickens with the murder of an airline CEO, painting a target on the backs of the world's biggest polluters.
DCI Jane Phillips is as tenacious as they come, and her pursuit of the eco-terrorists suspected of these heinous crimes is both relentless and fraught with danger. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that there's more at play than meets the eye, with a shadowy figure orchestrating events from behind a "Deadly Veil."
Ryan's narrative is a masterclass in suspense, with each chapter ratcheting up the tension. The pacing is impeccable, ensuring that readers are hooked from the first page to the last. The author's deep understanding of police procedures shines through, lending authenticity to the Major Crimes Unit's investigation.
The thematic exploration of environmental activism taken to a violent extreme is timely and thought-provoking, challenging readers to consider the lengths to which some might go to make their voices heard. Yet, it's the character development that truly stands out. Phillips is a protagonist with layers, her personal growth across the series adding depth to her character and raising the stakes of her mission.
"Deadly Veil" is a narrative with a pulse, a story that breathes life into the genre. Fans of the series will be delighted with this latest entry, while newcomers will find themselves compelled to visit the earlier books. OMJ Ryan has delivered yet another gripping tale that cements Detective Jane Phillips' place among the great fictional detectives.
In this latest DCI Jane Phillips book, she and her team are tasked with determining the culprits behind crimes that appear to be terrorist attacks but on a smaller scale. An oil executive is the victim of a car bombing, an airline executive is stabbed, and this appears to be only the beginning. There are suspects caught on camera, but of course, they are disguised so the footage isn’t really of any help. And they plan well in advance so that each perpetrator leaves the crime scene via a different exit, so witnesses can’t track them.
Jane’s boss is seriously putting the pressure on – not because she’s worried about more people getting hurt, but because every crime reflects badly on her force. Ironic, considering she’s the most crooked of them all. And wouldn’t you know, the mole that Jane believes is passing on information to the papers is at it again! One more stress the team doesn’t need on top of hunting down the suspects. But Jane will stop at nothing to protect the people of Manchester, no matter how many rules she must break or how many authority figures try to get in her way.
The reader sees from both Jane’s perspective and that of the gang responsible for terrorizing the public. While we don’t know their exact identities, we can see how and why they’re planning their attacks. Together with what the police uncover, you may be able to determine the mastermind behind this gang, but even so, it’s fun to see how it plays out. This series has one of the more memorable cast of characters, and their interactions together are always a treat. Particularly Jones and Bovalino. They always provide the right amount of comic relief. And you’ll need that when you reach the end, as Jane makes a discovery that’s sure to affect this team for quite some time.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for an advance copy of Deadly Veil, the tenth novel to feature DCI Jane Phillips of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crimes Unit.
Jane and the team are asked to investigate the car bombing of a senior oil and gas industry figure. They can see three figures fleeing the scene on CCTV, but there is no detail. When an airline CEO is stabbed to death a few days later they suspect that they are hunting eco-terrorists. This is not good news with a major energy conference coming to town.
I thoroughly enjoyed Deadly Veil, which is an engrossing police procedural with some interesting twists and a surprising solution. I felt the tension throughout the novel, not just from the looming deadline of the conference, but also from the internal pressure of a psychopathic Chief Constable, a local reporter with a mole and certain events that add to the angst. It’s all go and there’s never a dull moment.
The narrative switches between Jane and the three co-conspirators, giving the reader a wider view of events. It works well. I must admit that I’m not a big fan of the eco war in fiction. I am aware of the issues and do what I can within my means, but I don’t need it rammed down my throat in my escape place. Fortunately this novel takes a rather unusual approach and I loved it. I’m not going to say what that approach is, but there’s a certain amount of irony in it. It’s clever.
By now Jane and the team are old friends, so it’s pleasant to spend time with normal folk doing a difficult and stressful job. Apart from the Chief Constable they are all regular people with no major problems or issues in their lives and that is restful.
Deadly Veil is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
A car bomb, then a stabbing. Victims are executives of corporations that are believed to be harming the planet. DCI Jane Phillips is tasked with finding the suspects who are targetting the heads of these corporations.
They are eco warriors, and they are taking orders from an unknown shadowy figure only known as Charlie - named for Charles Manson.
Problem is, the group responsible are not taking credit for the attacks. Why?
The foot soldiers of the eco terrorist group will surprise and stun the reader. Not to mention the head of the organization.
Jane also has to find the mole in the department who is leaking information to the press. The suspect is narrowed down to five close colleagues.
When I noticed that the investigation was about eco terrorism, I rolled my eyes. Not that I do not care about the future of our planet, but because I do not believe that protests and killings help at all. We all have to be involved in conserving our resources.
I really got into this police procedural, Jane is a strong leader with a loyal and capable team. I like her dedication to crime fighting, and her methodical manner of solving cases. The book is gripping and totally believable, in my opinion. The twist of who the killers are, and the person that has total control over their actions stunned me.
It is a brilliant read, and I could hardly put this book down.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
This is a wonderful book. I have discovered a new author. I can’t wait to immerse myself in his books.
The plot of this book is very intricate. There is much going on. We see the planning of the crimes and the deterioration of the relationships between the conspirators. But, as they use “code” names, we don’t know who they are. Brilliant device!
A bomb goes off in town. The man in the car barely survives. The Terrorist Unit of the police do not think it is a terrorist attack. The highly questionable/morally deficient boss assigns the case to DCI Jane Phillips and DI Jones of the major crimes unit.
Jane sets her team on the case. The investigation moves apace from the beginning. As more attacks occur, the tension in the story ratchets up. One unfortunate man is even murdered.
Three people are seen on CCTV running from one of the scenes. Who they are remains a mystery. They look to be targeting people in the energy field. Are the ne’er-do wells eco terrorists?
There is also a “puppet master” involved in this story, which adds another layer of mystery. Who is this mysterious person? Even the three people committing the crimes don’t know their identity.
Slowly, the police put the pieces together. Surprises aplenty. The denouement is surprising and makes perfect sense.
I want to thank NetGalley and Inkubator Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great book for me to read, enjoy and review. The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own.
Having read the first 4 books in this series from a box set, I then went on to catch up with the series. From reading the first book in August last year I can now say I'm up to date with the whole series have read and enjoyed each and every one.
This again was another exceptional read. Although I read books 10 and 11 the wrong way around I don't think it took anything away from the enjoyment. When Jayne and her team start a new case it doesn't take long to start to get stuck in and start piecing things together. The Team are part of Greater Manchester Police’s Major Crimes Unit. I say it a lot when I've read books based in and around Manchester but for me knowing the areas that get mentions really adds to the story. A car bomb a stabbing this book is packed with tension. It starts off at speed and continues the whole way through. Highly recommended read.
Wow, I found Deadly Veil to be a very absorbing and entertaining read. It certainly got off to a fab start with the opening chapter which drew me into the story straightaway. I really like DCI Phillips and her team, and love their camaraderie, banter and way they work together and complement each other. This is a very well written book that flows effortlessly and is an absolute pleasure to read. I think the plotline is intricate and very well thought out, it certainly went off in a way I didn't expect and I had many wow moments when reading - especially in the last part of the book. The author has managed to create so much tension and suspense here which in turn made this a very moreish, thrilling read that I kept returning to whenever I could. Good to see an ongoing thread has been resolved and I'm looking forward to see what way the other one goes hopefully in the next book. Overall, a thrilling read that I thoroughly enjoyed and a great police procedural that I'd recommend. I loved everything, can't fault it at all and will be eagerly looking out for the next book. 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This series is one of my favourites and this author is one of my go-to authors. With each new book in the series, I already know it's going to be another cracker and yet again, I've been proved right.
Jane and the team are brought in to handle a case which was originally thought to be an act of terrorism but now seems to be motivated by something else entirely. A further couple of attacks on other businessmen seem to have links to environment protestors. As usual, the team have their work cut out for them and even more so when an issue in custody brings the wrath of Fox on top of them.
It's a terrific police procedural and I enjoyed how the team get to the people responsible and then find things are more complex. I always find that it's hard to put these books down and this was the case here. The author can't write fast enough for me.
Best yet. And rooted in today's social Pandora's Box
As a reader of several police procedural series, I'm always pleased to start one of Ryan's books. The prose is precise, the typos are few, and the plot is always driven with intensity. Using today's obsession with social media and environmental issues, the author has tapped into a painfully relevant vein of corruption. The characters are always portrayed in three dimensions (although I can't wait to see Fox get her dues) and it's impossible not to feel a strong kinship with the MCU ' members. The only question I have (my wife and I are in the middle of Season 2 of "Marcella" on Netflix) is where is the tellie series for Jane Phillips?!!!!!
The 10th in the DCI Jane Phillips series and it did not disappoint. Being back with the team again and the characters we have gotten to know and love, (and even dislike)over the series provides such a great sense of safety. Knowing that the reader is going to be taken along on a quick paced crime thriller. This time a possible terrorist threat and attempted murders. I was delighted to receive this book on launch day and was torn between reading it all in one sitting, or trying to make it last a little longer. I did manage to save the last few chapters for this evening. But now I'm finished, there needs to be more. Please Owen 🙏🙏🙏
This is another great book in this series, they just get better and better. It's a well written gripping storyline and plot with twists and turns and great characters, and it captures you from the beginning to end. As I read it kept me in suspence and suspecting , as to who, but I never did guess right. Although it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I would without doubt, recommend this book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
f you have read Detective Jane series will enjoy this or read as a stand alone. You love the characters, the flow of the authors words as you try to figure out the mystery. Why three young kid would be involved in the making of a homemade bomb. Footage later showing three shadowy figures leaving this private members club.. This.series is always enjoyable to read, and I look for the next one. Given arc by Net Galley and Inkubator books for my voluntary review and
Another intriguing plot takes the reader to Manchester on a case that takes some minds back to the Troubles. However, times are different yet car bombs tend to be dangerous. It seems like several people are involved, but who is behind this and why?
The team knows someone is leaking information to the press, and it is really disturbing.
There is a lot going on in this book, which keeps the reader happily entertained, and it’s always a pleasure to deal with this great team!
I absolutely rave about OMJ Ryan books. The attention to detail even with the what3words plotting "just off the M60 near to Stockport".
I love Jane Phillips and the character she portraits and I'm so glad the mole was found! I did suspect who it was based on their presence throughout the book but it was still hard to believe.
I hope it isn't the end for the DCI Phillips series.
I just love this series, and was delighted to find it on fantastic fiction. The series gets better and better. Once again I read it in one day. I can’t wait until the next one is written. Fabulous series and the characters are so human, apart from Fix, she’s one on her own. I’m just waiting for her comeuppance
OMJ Ryan has written another page-turner and grabs you and won’t let go until the tale is told.
This one was an exciting read but like many other readers of Mr Ryan, I’m beyond ready for the subplot of Chief Constable Fox to be rectified. Pleeeze, in the next book, ger er done!!
Have enjoyed all 10 books and hope there will be more to come. Highly recommend these books no matter what order you read them in though probably best in order. The team are great together. Hoping for lots more!!
I read the first book mainly as I had nothing else to read, but very quickly got hooked on this author, and have now read the entire 10 books. You won't be disappointed their all brilliant
Wow , what a twist. Again this book just as all the others was amazing. I've loved this series and I'm just gutted that it's over. You get to love all the characters and believe in them...
Thoroughly enjoyed the whole series of 10. Hope there are more to come. An excellent writer who keeps you enthralled until the end of each book. Highly recommended reading
