Listen, I really loved both of these MCs. Kaye was the sobbing empathetic disaster that everyone needs in their lives. She was my favorite kind of soft hearted FMC because she’d gained a backbone for herself prior to the start of the book and learned how to set boundaries. Kalla was her dark knight, lost in a world of emotional pain that he turned outward. They had a rough start, especially concerning Kalla’s… questionable morals. The only thing that kept me from rating this 5 stars was that I felt like there were some steps missed between Kaye being pissed tf off and deciding she loved him. Then again, the fated mate thing does tend to smooth over some things.
The world of Kar’Kal has been fascinating and I love all the diplomatic issues that have popped up throughout the books. The characters have all been complex in their own ways. Also, why do I have to wait for the next book? I need it noooooowwwwwww

I've been slumpy and grumpy so avoiding writing a couple reviews, afraid I'll just focus on the negatives for me. But the umpiness (totally a word) is ongoing so I'm going to try and just anyone reading this, take it with a grain of salt.
To start, I wish that the author had done a brief summary of the world or some sort of touch point because this second book dives right into the middle of what's been happening in their world and I was honestly lost. It's been a couple months since I read the first one and maybe I should have done a reread. This book doesn't have a glossary or references like some sci-fi books, just fyi. I do not think that this book stands alone either, it's too interconnected with too many references to events of the first book and the world building is more supportive than foundational.
I liked both Kaye (h) and Kalla (H) and the found family elements of this series continues to be a win for me. I did think that both characters evolved with the events and their fated mate bond. I was very frustrated at the sudden change on Kaye's end though from being angry at an action that Kalla took to being all in on for the relationship. She even thinks about how she's the forgiving type. The I love you's especially jarred me. I felt more transition was needed and overall, I didn't feel that the relationship development and timing were right for this story. There are significant time jumps, including a forced separation that made me feel even less like the couple had the quality time necessary. The fated mates element brought them together and I know that each found qualities to respect and love in the other, but slice of life type moments of them together or time spent outside of the initial angst or the danger moments would have enhanced this for me.
Written in first person, dual POV. No ow drama, tiny om drama from h's ex who doesn't want her back but makes H jealous just by existing and is just an ass. Neither are virgins (small references to past sexual history given).
I did like the steam, this author does spiciness very well imo. The consent is also very good considering that Kaye is not on board with the mate bond initially and that Kalla is equipped with aphrodisiac in his saliva, but is cautious with it. If you're looking for size difference and the whole "will it fit" question, this one right here's got that too.
The couple from book 1 do feature in this book, as do several other side characters who are important for supporting and occasionally knocking sense into the main characters. The young adult that Kaye ends up being guardian over was a precious relationship that I loved. The author also addresses a connection between a character from her other series involving this alien race and Kalla. I both liked that and felt that it needed more fleshing out. What happened with Kaye's friend was also somewhat frustrating because I could see what was going to happen easily but then the actual happenings are going to be in the next book, which didn't stop there from being repeated page time that didn't go anywhere. Again, the umpiness may be at work. What had nothing to do with umpiness was Kaye's whole first marriage situation and how it infuriated me and that's all I'm saying about it.
The ending is HFN and I was glad that Kalla had a new purpose. I had questions though and wasn't sure what was going to happen with Kaye or where they were going to live. I'm assuming all of that is going to be addressed on the side as the series continues and I get it's hard to do extended epilogues sometimes with ongoing series. With the time jumps and the weaker (to me) relationship development, I was hoping for a clearer picture of what that HEA looked like for them.

I have mixed feelings about this novel. At times, I was totally enthralled and breathlessly waiting to see what happens next, but then it would slump.
I don’t understand the dynamic between the MCs— she’s combative about the situation at times, but then immediately a doormat when the argument is supposed to come to a head. He’s sweet and longs to be with her, but also isn’t combative or aggressive in a manner that matches his persona. All in all, there’s no real confrontation because one of them always backs down. I found this to be very frustrating and constantly anti-climatic.
I loved Kalla from the get-go. Broody, stabby, and grumpy- some of my favorite qualities in an MMC. He also has a sense of humor, although we don’t see it much and even then, it feels muted. Kaye is a subpar FMC, imo. I didn’t connect with her character at all until they got to EC-12, which was over 50% into the book. I understood her history from the bits and pieces we were given, but without a focus on it from the get-go (like what we got with Kalla), it’s hard to be invested in her as the FMC.
I was looking forward to the spice since this was a slow burn, but even that wasn’t super satisfying until 80% in. I didn’t feel that Kaye matched Kalla well. Overall, I see the potential in this universe and story line. If the entire novel had been like the latter 1/4 of the book, this would have easily been 5 stars.

Where do I START?! I devoured this book in less than a day, it was that good. I started with the Virgin Warriors series but the Deviant series is definitely my favorite, and this book ties them together perfectly!
This book had a bit of a grumpy/sunshine trope without being tired and unoriginal. Kalla had genuine reasons for his bleak mindset and Kaye was a bright counterpoint to that without seeming naive and ridiculous. And I really love the contrast of their personalities to those of the main characters of the last book. I also LOVED the way relationships were fleshed out with side characters in this book. The love and care Mak and Niko had for Kalla really added depth and backstory and set the stage for the plot of the book. I'm not sure if Raffa will ever get his own book but I love the way his character was fleshed out and the brother/sister relationship between him and Kaye was developed.
Finally, it was pretty obvious from the beginning of this book who the next couple would be but the little tidbits we learned about the FMC as well as THAT ENDING have me absolutely for the next book!

This series is not what I was led to expect (no damned pirates) and there's nothing particularly innovative in it, but in true alien romance fashion, I now have to keep reading and there's a whole-ass prequel series.

First of all, I’d like to thank the author for the ARC I was sent!
This was a really fun read. One of the best things about it is that I was able to enjoy it even though it was the second book in a series without reading the first.
The context was great, so it allowed me to piece together certain important events from other entries!
Kaye was a great fmc! She was strong even in her vulnerability. She acknowledges that she can cry and have emotions without being weak or less than her mate.
During this whole thing she holds her own beliefs, while still putting in the effort to meet Kalla in the middle.
If I had to point something out, was that the third act/climax of the book was underwhelming. We’re given this idea of Kalla as a great warrior who struggles to protect his people, and then the conflict goes by almost unnoticed, almost.
I had to read the last few chapters a couple of times because I thought I might have missed the action there.
Anyways, I would highly recommend you still pick this up 😊

This book 2 in The Deviant Warriors of Kar'Kal Book Series has an intriguing story with well-developed scenes, unique characters and well-crafted world. These characters have interesting histories, engaging personalities and believable interactions. This entertaining story has the following: twists, turns, adventure, action, humans, aliens, love, steam and a HEA.

God, Gemma just doesn't miss in this series. The best way I can describe this without spoilers is to say "it's a space romance with a star trek-esque space war going on in the background."
THROUGHLY ENJOYED, ngl forgot what happened in the first book, and the spinoff series where the aliens are on Earth for research: but even with that barrier Gemma was able to lead me through the story without being overbearing with plot details. Kalla does give me angry-Hades vibes, but I love how sweet he is with our heroine Kaye.
Definitely would suggest reading the first one before this one, but if you enjoy reading alien romance series out of order like I do, this is the book for you!

Kalla + Kaye = a fun, thrilling, and seductive love story with all the feels! I fell in love with the main and side characters, they had depth and their banter was so entertaining! The world building was top-notch as well. Loved this book!

I adored this book! After settling down with it I read it in two sittings and loved every minute of it. The characters are so charming and I've quickly became a fan of Gemma's writing style.
I read the first book before this one (which I highly recommend doing) and easily cannot get enough of this series already. There were moments where the conflict seemed to fall a little flat but over all I loved this book!

I’m so happy that i had a chance to read continuation of ‘Deviant Warriors of Kar’Kal’ series.
In second book we are following the most dangerous assassin, spy and mercenary, add to the mix his urges to avenge death of his family and loss of the home and lovely deadly personality and just everything. So yeah, Kaye is dreamy.
The moment he realized that his past actions and enemies can harm Kalla..he decided to leave the ship without making his presence known, good plan (not really), and it backfired when she literally stumbled upon him and now they are together on a small spaceship with dangerous mission ahead of them. Did he kidnap her? Open question really.
This part was fun to read and follow our grumpy alien who tries to steal Kallla’ the heart, and general plot where we are trying to return to the home.
Cliffhanger is so nice and cute, can’t wait to read Mak’s story and how he will balance responsibilities and matehood.

It got worser.
I was so looking forward to this book but unfortunately it was quite a let down. I forced myself not to give up but by half way I’d given up caring and by three quarters thru I was skimming so I could see how they ended up. This book had such potential too!
Aliens = cool
Assassin = yes please
Plot = interesting
Spicy times = entertaining
It was all executed very poorly.
The MMC reads like he was written by a sheltered suburban woman who’s never even shoplifted and thinks jaywalking is cause for the electric chair. *insert how do you do fellow kids meme here* The author should have done some research on how to write a criminal because most of this was extremely cringe.
The MFC was overly feminized version of a good girl with a bad guy trope. I don’t mind this trope, when it’s done well but this ain’t it. The crying, the giggling. Barf. I feel like this set feminism back a few years.
The first pov! Oh how I hate it. It waffled back and forth between tenses while mostly sounded like an emo teen whining about the cute new boy in social studies.

Alien From Ashes features Kaye, human and Kalla, alien assassin. This is the second book in the series and picks up immediately after the first book ends. While waiting for her friend to recuperate, Kaye gains the notice of Kalla, who immediately clocks her as his mate.
This was… not great. Book one was so enjoyable, I was so excited to continue the series. However, the plot was so slow it almost moved in reverse. It took me two days to read book one and an entire week to read book two (which is not normal for me). Then there was a whole years time jump? This alien who wants to protect his mate more than anything would choose to be separated from her for a whole year? And the brother was a weird shoe horn into the plot.
Overall, so sad that this fell so flat for me, because the first book was so great.
This was… not great. Book one was so enjoyable, I was so excited to continue the series. However, the plot was so slow it almost moved in reverse. It took me two days to read book one and an entire week to read book two (which is not normal for me). I love this author’s Sci-Fi Romances because her stories always pull me in and keep me in the zone until the final page.
Alien from Ashes delivered another such read in a slow burn, fated mates adventure that included some of my favorite tropes, number one being the morally grey MMC Kallasiko that along with MFC Kaye makes this narrative rock. What’s a Kings Blade to do when he finds his mate? Steal her of course!
This second book in the Deviant Warriors of Kar’Kal series rivals the first with its richness of characters and story development so flawlessly written, and I enjoyed all the action, intrigue,sensuous storytelling that made this a perfect read.
Can’t wait for the next book because at the end of this one it looks like a King has just found his own human mate, whoo-hoo!

I LOVED this book! Gemma Voss is a new alien romance favorite for me, and after reading this book I'm even more excited to go back to her first series.
My only complaint is that I wish there was more of the couple on page together, there was a good amount where they were separated and there was great story stuff happening separately but I missed them together, I do kind of wish the whole "matenapping" thing kept on going for a little longer! But I really loved them as a couple and I love the whole world, there is really so much amazing world building and plot and story in these books and I am eating it up!
I NEED THE NEXT BOOK IMMEDIATELY PLEASE I LOVE MAK SO MUCH!!!

Killer Mates and Ethical Quandaries
Between the fantastic world building and the genocidal war that’s ramping up, sits a fated mate romance with a dash of kidnapping and a hint of reluctance. Kaye and Kalla have a lot of baggage to work through and conversations to be had, divulging secrets and truths, to get to their hard won happy ending. These two were such a perfect example of opposites attract, with Kaye’s empathy bringing softness to Kalla. I loved their story - sigh - All that hard work really paid off. Also, I found myself looking at the cover multiple times, examining the intricacies of the artwork (it’s stunning, and so on point for these characters). And oh boy, I can NOT wait for Mak and Frankie’s story - it’s going to be a burner for sure!

This was another well written and well paced addition to this series. I really enjoyed the characters for this one, with a grumpy/sunshine vibe. That being said, Kaye, our 'sunshine' gal, wasn't naive. She stood strong for her beliefs and emotions but did her best to meet Kalla in some sort of compromise. Kalla, our grumpy male, was grumpy for a reason, and was such a softie with Kaye ;) This may be a slow burn fated mates romance, but it wasn't lacking in world building or cute and steamy romance ;D

Absolutely LOVED reading Kalla and Kaye's story.
Kaye is 100000% the right kind of person that Kalla needs in his life. Not only will she soothe him, she will hold him accountable to all the things he's avoiding and unwilling to admit to himself.
Kay is strong, resilient and so incredibly thoughtful in every sense of the word.

Who wouldn't want a Kar Kali warrior for a mate? Kaye Might have been more receptive if Kalla had given her a choice. Not stolen her away. Even if he had good intentions. knowing his reputation and his size, made trusting him hard, but the more she got to know him, the more she saw that he cared and was trying to be better for her. Great story, lots of action and adventure in the war against the Azza. It's also hot and steamy and a fast paced read. Bravo!.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but I liked this one even more. Great world building and wonderful characters. I really liked both Kalla and Kaye. They don't have the best start since Kalla kidnaped her, but they had such great chemistry. I also liked the supporting characters- especially Raffa! I can't wait until the next book. 5 stars.

"The Ashbringer" the brother of a previous hero finds his mate. He wants to keep her safe so when she refuses to stay on the ship (and not return to her home on a remote colony where she was kidnapped by evil aliens to be a slave) he kidnaps her to keep her safe.
He says very romantic things to her. He also likes to talk dirty during sex.
This book was a lot of fun.

Love a morally grey assassin alien guy.
Love a little light kidnapping.
She was tall, he was taller.
The fated mates mechanism in this series soothes my soul. And is hot 🥵
Plus, a nation of alien refugees striving for generations to reclaim their homeland was exactly the world-building I was looking for.
If only the couple hadn’t needed to stay away from each other as much. It made sense for the story, but I’m trash for forced proximity.

I went into this book not really knowing what it was about. All I knew was that it had aliens and spice. Sign me up! 🤣. Spice rating I’d give it 2/5 🌶️. Loved the storyline, loved the characters, the writing was good. The spicy scenes were 👌. Gemma is being added to my fave sci-fi authors! Can’t wait for the next book!!

I really loved Kaye and Kalla’s characters. Kaye was the kind and empathetic balm to Kalla’s violent and dangerous tendencies. I truly loved their dynamic. The separation between the two is what got me. I understand the reasoning behind it all, but the MC’s rarely had any time together throughout the story.

Awesome read, I love space alien romance and this book ticked all my boxes, a strong female lead, a protective warrior hero, and a story line that kept me turning pages into the wee hours of the morning. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a romantic escape from the real world!
