In the summer of 1987, a hardcore kid from Queens, NY, set out on a summer adventure that would forever change the course of his life. Anthony Civarelli (better known as Civ), accompanied by six friends, headed west to play music and try to change the world. This book is based on his daily journal writings while working as a roadie on the Youth Of Today "Break Down The Walls" tour. It serves as a time capsule and a look into life on the road as a teenager in the punk and hardcore scenes in the 1980s. Includes pictures, flyers, and much more, along with Civ's unique storytelling and memories based on a diary he kept during the tour.

This really brought me back to the 80’s, way more than all those shitty MTV 80’s specials. I saw Youth of Today around the period of this book, plus a bunch of the other bands mentioned, and those were indeed good times.

This book is a must read for anyone who has ever been a part of the DIY music scene. This tour was as DIY as it gets. Thanks to CIV for keeping a journal during this tour and saving so much memorabilia for the photos in this book. All around awesome read.

A wonderful book composed of journal entries during a tour a summer tour in 1987 by one of hardcores greatest vocalist CIV. An insiders look at life on the road with Youth of Today. A tale of long drives before Google Maps, quick makeout sessions and endless shows across the US with one of the best NYHC bands of all time. Friendships were built and a bond was made that will last forever. Really enjoyed how the formatting of the book was completed and I really hope we get a book about the start of THE BEST NYHC band of all time......GORILLA BISCUITS.

This book is likely the holy grail for a Youth of Today Fan. I think I thought going in it would have a lot more NYHC history but it was truly the story of one tour.

Still enjoyed reading it and it made me listen the Break Down the Walls record which I previously hadn't.

The photos definitely earn this book a spot on any aging punk/hardcore kids coffee table.

CIV needs to write a book about GB.

Schnell zu lesen und bietet zwischen witzigen Anekdoten auch immer mal wieder interessante Momente der Hardcoreszene der 80er. Detailsreich durch Fotos ergänzt lädt Civ zum mitreisen ein und zeigt die schönen Dinge aber auch die Schattenseiten des Tourlebens.

“ A roadie’s tale” is Civ’s story about being a roadie for the ‘87 Youth of Today, Break Down The Walls tour. He kept a journal for their summer tour around the country, this book is also filled with old school pics and fliers.

This is a must read for any YOT/GB/NYHC fan!!!

I heard Civ on a podcast and he said he had a journal from GB’s ‘89 Start Today tour, so PLEASE Civ do us all a favor and start writing!!

Natuurlijk heb ik 'Get in the van' van Henry Rollins gelezen, zijn legendarische 'dagboek' van het leven als zanger van hardcore band Black Flag. Toen ik zag dat er een nieuwe druk van 'A Roadie's Tale' uitwas heb ik die dus meteen besteld.

De auteur is Anthony 'Civ' Civorelli, zanger van een van mijn favoriete band, Gorilla Biscuits, Straight Edge Hardcore uit New York. GB waren nog maar net begonnen toen Civ werd gevraagd door een van de trendsetters in SEHC 'Youth of Today' om voor hun te roadiën tijdens een zomertour door Amerika (en Canada) in 1987.

Het bracht me meteen terug naar mijn tijd 'on the road'. Ik was weliswaar een stuk ouder en absoluut niet zo getalenteerd als YoT of GB, maar doorkruiste wel 17 landen in Europa. Ook ik sliep op de vloer (of op een trap) bij mensen thuis, in een schuilkelder onder een flat of in een anderhalfpersoons bed met een ander bandlid. Het was altijd maar de vraag of we ons benzinegeld kregen, voor meer speelden we eigenlijk nooit, of we zonder problemen de grens passeerden, uit de handen van de politie bleven of een beetje redelijk eten hadden. Maar wat Civ in zijn boek zo mooi beschrijft is het gevoel dat je ergens deel van uitmaakt, dat je vrienden maakt op plekken waar je anders nooit zou komen.
Dit boek is een eerbetoon aan de DIY (Do It Yourself) beweging en zou door elke nieuwe band gelezen moeten worden. Het is namelijk niet vanzelfsprekend dat er een podium is, monitors en een 24 kanaals digitaal mengpaneel. Concerten gaan op het laatste moment niet door en ontstaan soms uit het niets 's nachts nadat je al gespeeld hebt. Je pakt elke mogelijkheid om te spelen om je mening te verkondigen, want ook daar gaat dit boek over. Straight Edge, de tegenbeweging die een einde wilde maken aan de zelfdestructieve tendens van alcohol, drugs en tabakmisbruik. Ze werden verguisd, ze werden gehaat, ze werden belaagd, maar ze zetten toch door en de meesten zijn nog steeds Straight Edge.

Ik zag Gorilla Biscuits vorig jaar in 't Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. Civ, Walter, Arthur en Luke waren nog net zo te gek op het podium als toen ik ze voor het eerst zag in Alkmaar in 1991. De boodschap is nog net zo sterk en de fans gingen helemaal los. Ook een les voor veel andere bands. Gorilla Biscuits brachten een EP en een Album uit, bij elkaar nog geen uur aan muziek. En die nummers willen en krijgen wij te horen met een enkele cover, geen onnodige 'vullers' die toch nooit meer kunnen tippen aan waar ze mee begonnen.

Koop dit boek en waan je terug in een tijd die zoveel makkelijker lijkt dan nu, maar het alles behalve was.

Read through this one in a day - couldn't put it down. Great read - especially if you are a YOT fan and just a fan of the NYHC youth crew scene. Love how it shows a bit of another side to these dudes.

Could have used a little bit better editing as a lot of typos snuck in to an otherwise really great book design.

A book by one of my heroes. Its notable that I'm sure he has toured the world with many famous people when he was on a major label as a singer, but he chooses to write a book about this instead: his first tour of the U.S., when he was (as the title reveals) a roadie in his teens. This fact also shows why he is one of my heroes!

Damn…..as someone who’s currently in a band filled with neurodivergent dumbasses this book makes me realize that it was no different for bands in the 80s….also, the “Flame Still Burns” Lore got me crying in the shower like that one motherfucker from Arrested Development 😢….

Just what I needed to read in keeping theme with Henry Rollins’ Get In The Van.

If you need travel inspiration, love hardcore, and need an easy read this is a must. I’ll be loaning this copy to friends for years to come. Great photos, scans of set lists, and accounts of legendary shows.
