J.V. enjoys cooking, gardening, reading, playing RPG's, watching old black-and-white movies, and pottering around the house!
Can’t recommend due to it being dark and immoral. (2 stars)
This series of three fantasy novels from the mid 1990s consists of #1 The Baker’s Boy, #2 A Man Betrayed, #3 Master and Fool. It focuses on the adventures of Jack, a baker’s apprentice, who turns out to have powers of sorcery.
The world is largely medieval, but the world building, characters, and story-line are generally quite well done. But unfortunately there’s a lot of sexual content and references, describing a lot of lechery. The themes are also quite dark at times, with numerous assassins and murderers at work. For moral reasons, these get a big `no’ from me.
Fantastic epic fantasy adventure! Magic is real and a simple bakers boy is going to find out just how powerful it is, and the consequences of using magic. That is the beginning of the story and the adventures of Jack, the bakers boy and his friends. So much intrigue and politics, red herrings and mystery, and tons of action and knights in shining armor. This story has it all. I highly recommend.
Genuinely lovely. A writer much missed in recent year, JV Jones had .a blast writing this trilogy and that shines through. I hope to read something new by her in the future.
A treasure of a trilogy! Well crafted, great characters, still fun and interesting even after 1800 pages! This was written 25 years ago (96) but it's far better than most of the more recent fantasy trilogies. Swords, sorcery, politics, battles, all around a theme of greed. I loved this book!
This reads like a really, really good first draft. Having started her Sword of Shadows series, I'm guessing that's where she ended up heading. Can't wait for the next installment there, but in the meantime, I would be lying if I said I hadn't enjoyed this series as an interlude.
Enjoyable, though pretty standard stuff. Probably best not to read at the same time s Memory Sorrow Thorn as though they diverge the two start in an extremely similar way.
