Harlan Thorne is a professional Hunter.

When a solicitor approaches him on behalf of a client facing an unspecified vampire problem, he cannot turn away. But from the moment he steps into the imposing Thornhill Mansion, perched above the hallowed grounds of Highgate Cemetery West, reality itself begins to warp.

Harlan soon finds himself swept up in a cyclone of long-held secrets, ancient vendettas, ghostly whispers, and a looming resurrection that demands blood - in abundance.

As Harlan unravels the mysteries of Thornhill Mansion and its inhabitants, he unearths buried truths about his own lineage. The deeper he digs, the more he realizes: his fate is hopelessly entangled with the Thornhills’.

“Dark Roots" is the debut novel from Danish-British author Lucius Valiant. Sumptuously dark with a wry twist of humor, it’s the first spine-tingling installment in the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles.

Lucius Valiant is a Danish-British author.

The first real book he recalls reading is Bram Stoker’s "Dracula." And that, as the saying goes, was that. There would be no turning back.

Lucius’s literary inspirations include classics of Gothic fiction, such as Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein" and Oscar Wilde’s "The Picture of Dorian Gray," as well as horror, supernatural, and speculative fiction by writers such as Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, and Stephen King. He also draws much influence from Britain’s rich history, folklore, and legends.

All of these influences shine through like glittering, dark fairy dust in his writing, which readers have described as vivid, visceral, and cinematic, with a sprinkling of wry humor.

Dark Roots is a contemporary Gothic vampire novel with an urban fantasy twist that makes it perfect for crossover fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Tim Burton's Wednesday or Dark Shadows. Although it's clear Valiant has a firm knowledge of nineteenth-century Gothic classics, there's a contemporary spin to his approach that goes beyond Dark Roots' modern setting and draws on a rich camp horror tradition of intertwining modern and historical setpieces. The sumptuous atmosphere and genre-appropriate melodrama draw comparison to Hammer Horror, and like a Hammer classic this short and fast-paced novel is full to the brim with dark family secrets, double-crosses, and mouldering crypts. This is Carmilla seen through a Google Glass darkly.

While Dark Roots could use a longer wordcount to give some of the early worldbuilding room to breathe and add more opportunity for the characterization of our protagonist and his friends, those looking for a tight and plot-driven Gothic romp will be well-served by taking a peek into the be-cobwebbed corners of Dark Roots.

Our main character is a young man named Harlan who works for a somewhat mysterious organization called The Van Helsing Society. As the name would suggest, the Society's job is to hunt monsters of all kinds (vampires, werewolves, and all your favourite beasties). At the start of Dark Roots, the Society is a central focus and a mystery is introduced early on when one of the Society's higher-ups (someone sympathetic to orphan Harlan's hunting methods) suffers a conveniently-timed stroke and is removed from duty to recover. When a nemesis of Harlan's takes over and bars Harlan from entering the Society's library, he retreats to his adopted father, Eli. Harlan knows little about his background, and it is the secret of Harlan's ancestry that proves the main focus of Dark Roots. While staying with Eli, Harlan is hired to investigate a possible vampire infestation in the area of London's Highgate Cemetary, in a mansion called Thornhill Manor. What he discovers at Thornhill is far more personal than he expects. As soon as he arrives, he meets a second invitee--a young photographer named Sebastian. The two are introduced to the lady of the manor--a woman named Lyrica whose wardrobe is straight out of a Victorian period piece--and are invited to sit with her over several evenings during which she promises to explain Harlan and Sebastian's secret family history. There's one splinter in the coffin though--Lyrica is a vampire, and as a hunter, it's Harlan's job to protect civilian Sebastian from the inherent danger she poses.

For me, the highlight of Dark Roots was the story-within-a-story narrated by Lyrica. This was to Dark Roots' credit as we spend the majority of the novel in what amounts to Lyrica's POV (she has a virtually photographic memory of her past, complete with conversations from over a hundred years ago--vampirism does have its perks, after all!). It's in Lyrica's Thornhill Manor, too, where Valiant showcases his scene-setting chops. For anyone unfamiliar with Gothic, it may seem strange to compliment a writer's description of furniture, architecture, and pattern/texture, but in a genre marked by the aesthetic, these elements are crucial to get right and Valiant nails them. From Lyrica's costuming to the dank crypt below the manor, Thornhill is the quintessential Gothic mansion.

There's a splash of Anne Rice to the frame story structure, which shouldn't surprise given that Valiant dedicates the novel to Rice in a moving tribute, and the format is used effectively. Since Lyrica's tale is recounted over several nights, this gives Valiant opportunities to have Harlan and Sebastian investigate Thornhill's dark crevices and hidden corners.

The character-focused reader in me would have liked just a little more interiority from Harlan in these moments. Given how world-shakingly personally Lyrica's story ought to be for both Harlan and Sebastian, more time spent sitting with their emotional and interpersonal reactions would have deepened the book's impact. Although Lyrica's passages were my favourite parts, the dominance of her story over Harlan's does mean we get less of a sense of him as a person. Nearly as soon as we're introduced to Harlan in the novel's opening, we're snapped into Lyrica's story and the mystery of Harlan's origin, but for the mystery to have the gut-wrenching impact it ought to, we need to know Harlan a bit better first.

Overall, the novel's openining sequence almost give a sense of Dark Roots as a different sort of book, and the frame story of Harlan and the hunters could have been a little more integrated with the Thornhill plot. Just as an example, having Harlan investigate Thornhill on behest of the Society (instead of under his own steam) and moving the his mentor's stroke to the end of the novel as setup for a future book may have ramped up the stakes a little more and made the focus of the story clearer from its opening.

Once Lyrica's tale is finished, the last quarter or so of the book is spent with Harlan. There's an almost madcap quality to the action in this later quarter, and one particular sequence involving a hidden underground lair was especially zany and delightful. I started to get more of a sense of each of the characters here, which suggests some fun relationship dynamics to come in Dark Roots's planned sequels. Although there could have been more build up of the final "big bad" and their relevance to both Harlan and the larger narrative, the novel's conclusion established a new status quo that promises some fun and unlikely partnerships between former enemies.

Dark Roots kept me entertained throughout, which is no small thing, and with this debut novel Valiant has demonstrated he clearly has the skills to weave a captivating story. I'm looking forward to watching both Harlan's story and Valiant's impressive craftmenship develop with future installments.

Make sure to check out Dark Roots for an atmospheric contemporary vampire story that promises a wider world of fun to be had in the larger series.

A gripping gothic inspired dark fantasy tale exploring the world of hunters and the paranormal.

Harlan, a modern day Van Helsing Hunter is having a rough week. After returning from a hunt he's confronted by a bitter rival and forcibly exiled from his hunter life until further notice. In need of a friend he turns to his mentor Eli, but finds a mysterious solicitor present with a curious offer of employment and the lure of a vampire hunt. Initially wary, Harlan gives into temptation and embarks on a haunting journey into family mysteries, unsolved murders, dark secrets, supernatural activity, and the curiosities of Thornhill Mansion.

This is entertaining from start to finish, the plot is captivating, the characters in depth and intriguing, and the undercurrents of darkness, mystery and the paranormal are threaded throughout the rich prose.

Highly recommend and looking forward to reading more of this series.

Dark Roots (The Thornhill Vampire Chronicles Book One) by Lucius Valiant

246 Pages

Urban Fantasy
Vampires, werewolves, ghosts and more.

Harlan Thorne, supernatural hunter, is suspended from the Van Helsing Society, a group of supernatural hunters, exorcists, and more, and has had his hunters license revoked and told to leave the premises and have no contact with anyone in the Society. Feeling like he has no where else to go Harlan goes to his mentor Eli’s house and is met with a suspicious opportunity. Going to London to deal with a vampire problem he is surprised to find out the vampire problem maybe be connected to him.

‘Finally, the solicitor spoke, breaking the silence. “Welcome,” he said emphatically, “to Thornhill Mansion.” — A quote from Dark Roots by Lucius Valiant.’ Welcome, indeed. This book has incredible world building. Lucius Valiant has created an entire world within his book that comes to life from the very first chapter. I was immediately pulled in after finishing that first chapter and left eager to finish the book. The amount of effort put in to ensure a captivating story is astounding. The characters were well described and the history was delivered with a delightfully creepy vibe. The setting was wonderful. I truly felt like I was transported to this gothic, creepy dark fantasy world while I was reading. I felt as if I were sitting in the library along with Harlan and Sebastian listening to Lyrica tell the family history. The feelings that this book made me feel were incredible. I truly felt the creepy gothic vibe that the story conveys. This series has definitely become a favorite and I can’t wait to start the second book. I can honestly say that this is a Five Star read and I look forward to the rest. Dark Roots is truly a piece of art perfectly crafted by Lucius Valiant and I’m glad I’ve read it and if you decide to read it, I know you’ll be glad to have read it too!

I received an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you to the author for this amazing opportunity to bring me into this wonderful Vampire series. This review includes my own thoughts and opinions after reading Dark Roots from start to finish on Bookfunnel.

I don't think I have finished a book so quickly in a while. Vampire stories will probably always be my favorite topic to read as I was first introduced with Twilight and obsessed. This book did not disappoint, and here I am off to the next to get ready for the prerelease of book 3. I don't read indie books very often as they can be hit or miss, but I will never turn down the opportunity to support an authors growth.

For anyone who loves a good Vampire read, you need to pick this up like yesterday. Highly recommend!

Harlan Thorne is a professional hunter of all supernatural creatures that may pose a threat to human life. While facing both personal and professional turmoil, Harlan is summoned by the lawyer of a.mysterious client with a vague but urgent request: to investigate a 'vampire problem' at the grand, bur crumbling Thornhill Mansion - a place frozen in time and shrouded in secrets.

What I loved most about this book was the absolute joy of being once again immersed in a proper vampire tale. These are real vampires: heightened senses, super strength and an aura of sensual and perfect immortality. No sparkling teen vamps here. You can feel the chill of the misty nights, the tension in the shadows, the brush of black velvet and lace in the candlelit halls. There's elegance, hunger and plenty of mystery.

A gothic, atmospheric vampire story with a modern twist. Delicious

Thank you Lucius Valiant for sharing an ARC copy of your book

A modern day vampire hunting tale without being right in your face that it’s not the 1800s. This is perfect for fans of Tim Burton and Van Helsing.

I was expecting a little more vampire killing/action throughout. However, I can also see why the book focused heavily on developing the history. It laid a good groundwork for the upcoming instalments, while also making sure you are captivated by the characters. All of which are very mysterious and intriguing.

Overall, a very enjoyable read that I absolutely devoured. Is it just me or did you also feel like you were solving a murder mystery game? Bring on book 2!

An absolutely addictive read!
I'm a vivid reader and Dark Roots painted a wonderful picture. Have had such a fun time making some new imaginary friends that I'm looking forward to getting to know more of in the next volumes
It's got a great balance between dark and humorous, best way I could describe it would be the gothic themes of Castlevania mixed with the humour of Skulkduggery pleasant
Favourite quote - " Helping other's get rid of the darkness that stalked their lives usually meant I didn't have time to dwell on my own" .... Beautiful
I avoid describing the story, we all experience stories differently so go discover it on your own, whilst I read the next one

Valiant’s Dark Roots is a contemporary, atmospheric, gothic vampire story. It has a reminiscence of the most iconic, amazing author of the genera; one of which was/is the Queen of Vampires: the only Anne Rice herself.

"You see, I wasn’t really afraid of dying. I was afraid of standing still."

Dark Roots has everything you need; the prose, the detail in the description, and the wording that reminds you of the gothic literature from the early ages we all love and appreciate. Can’t help but compliment Valiant’s writing skill and genius.

"There was something about the rambling beauty of this place made my eyes water."

A refreshing take on the well-known vampire novel tropes - and a strong beginning to a promising series

Being a big fan of fantasy and magic realism, but also critical of the many overused tropes and cliches in these genres, I really liked this story.

The author doesn't hide the fact that the vampire novels of Anne Rice is one of the inspirations for the book, but I feel as this is a more modern take on the theme.

This book for example, does not get hung up on long passages of eternal longing and pain of the soul and romantic self-misery that the novels of Rice can be prone to.
Instead, the charmingly gruff and no-nonsene main character mostly rolls with the punches. He is desicive and is often quick to act, and maybe a bit too headstrong for his own good.
I feel that the vampire genre is sometimes overpopulated by sad main characters lamenting their tortured existence for hours on end. This is not the case here, which I find very refreshing.

The story introduces a great cast of characters and sets the stage beautifully for conflicts and adventures to come.
The first few chapters are maybe in a bit too much of a hurry to establish the world and some of the characters, but it soon finds its pacing, and soon draws the reader in.
The worldbuilding is very interesting with several new takes on what you have come to expect from a novel about the supernatural.
You also get sense that the characters all are well thought out and all have hidden depths and motivations, that I can't wait to see explored further in the following novels.

All in all a great debut and a big recommendation!

Harlan, a Van Helsing hunter, returns from a hunt to find out his world is being turned upside down. His boss has suffered a medical emergency and his license is being suspended by their replacement. Harlan heads to the only family he has (a father-like figure who raised him after his family died during a vampire attack) where he is met with a solicitor, on behalf of a client who is having a vampire problem herself. Harlan cannot turn away the opportunity and heads to Thornhill Mansion, situated on the grounds of Highgate Cemetery (known for the Highgate Vampire). Harlan's life, as he knows it, is about to change in many unimaginable ways.

This is a gothic novel and the best way I can describe it is fantastic. I loved every second of this book. I absolutely love vampire stories but this one was so different from others I have read. It's dark, spooky, mixes past and present stories, and shows how important family really is - no matter how many generations have past.

I loved the mix of supernatural beings and humans. The characters were developed in a way that you really felt yourself rooting for some and completely hating others. I was very uncertain about some people and found myself questioning their motives. The story flowed nicely, and really picked up near the end, leaving me on the edge of my seat. The writing style is perfection.

I am so thrilled that this is only book 1, as I cannot wait to read more of the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles.

Thank you so much to Lucius Valiant for allowing me to read this for free. This was my honest review and it's absolutely amazing!

This book is the first in a series of 4 (there are maybe more planned). It's a classic vampire / hunter story with very interesting plots.

Overall the book is well written for a debut and the author takes enough time to develop the story and describe the characters. It's very easy to read and doesn't get boring at all.

The main character is Harlan Thorne, a male human who is a professional and very successful vampire hunter at the local Van Helsing society, an institution which fights against supernatural beings to protect the human world. There is not much background on it in Dark Roots, but I hope it's coming in Deep Graves, the second book. Anyway, Harlan just got back from a hunting and had to discover that not only the head of the society he works for, suffers from a stroke and got temporarily replaced by his rival but also he had to hand in his hunting license in a very questionable way.

Harlan seeks shelter and support at Eli's house, which is also where he grew up. Eli, a werewolf and fellow hunter of the V.H. society is kind of his step dad. When Harlan arrives at Eli's place there is also a solicitor waiting for him. He offers him a job at the old Thornhill Mansion.

From here on Harlan goes through a whirlwind of action, history and plots.
To avoid spoiling I don't go into detail but let's say it's kind of his destiny what happens to him.

So if you like dark vampire fantasy then this is your book. I enjoyed it very much and will start with book two now.

Within the past six months or so, my love of all things vampire has really resurfaced. For years I was obsessed with them, with my fascination of them starting the first time I watched Lost Boys. They sort of fell by the wayside, but it seems to me vampires are becoming popular again (I blame Twilight for their demise but don't get me started on that). The only supernatural creature that comes close to vamps for me are werewolves and I'm so lucky this series contains both, making it the complete package.

Harlan is a professional hunter for the Van Helsing Society who has recently been suspended due to some trumped up allegations because the acting director of his agency has an ax to grind. He ends up being approached to go investigate a vampire problem at the mysterious Thornhill mansion. Harlan's parents were killed by vamps when he was young and he had always had issues with them but for some reason, he is drawn to take the job and check out the mansion. There Harlan meets Sebastian, a photographer also invited to the mansion who hopes to feature the Gothic location in a new book. What unfolds makes Harlan and Sebastian question everything they know about their lives thus far and opens doors to a past they never suspected.

I loved Harlen. He is a complicated character but very likable. He has a great relationship with Eli, the man who raised him, who also transforms into a werewolf several nights a month. Thus, Harlen has always maintained an open mind. He also has a sense of humor and wit which I really appreciate in my characters. However, for some reason, Sebastian stole the show for me, perhaps because he reminded me of one of my best college pals. The book did a great job of introducing other characters and creatures only making me more excited for the installments to come, while weaving in a mystery complete with action and adventure.

If you are looking for a Gothic tale and love supernatural stories, then I really suggest you pick this book up. So far there are three books already released in the series and the author is working on the fourth. I am excited to see what lies for the Thornhill Vampire Chronicles.

From the moment I started reading this new Author's work I was captivated by this take of a dark and Gothic world of Vampires and the mysterious existence of paranormal hunters in a modern day society relating back to the name of Van Helsing. As the first book in what is stated as a three book series it was a brilliant start to the character of vampire hunter Harlan Thorne and his ancestral connection to Thornhill Mansion and its dark, dangerous and incredibly mysterious history. An interesting set of characters ranging over a variety of ages and existence statuses, that helps create an interesting plotline. I found it an easy read but still nicely balanced with action, drama, mystery, and in typical vampire fashion blood and gore elements, but certainly not too overwhelming that would turn off readers. Also intrigued by the secondary characters of Harlan's friends and really hope they return in the following books with a bit more drama, but certainly entrigued to see how Harlan and Sebastian's lives will now venture forth.

Dark Roots by Lucius Valiant

Dark Roots is the debut novel of Lucius Valiant. What an impressive start to a writing career!

Harlan Thorne is a professional hunter who is approached by a mysterious solicitor on the worst day of his life. Swept into a world of dark secrets, ancient vendettas, and a demand for blood, he must navigate his way through it and find the light on the other side.

When Harlan discovers his connection to the Thornhill Mansion, and its inhabitants, he finds himself sinking into the quicksand of deception through a kaleidoscope of reality. Everything he thought he knew about himself will be questioned.

If you grew up loving Anne Rice with her multi-layered characters and rich storytelling, this is the new series for you. It bridges the gap between the generation of Anne Rice and the Vampire Diaries, giving us a modern vampire tale with believable, unique characters. It’s giving 90s vampire vibes with a modern twist and I’m looking forward to more from Lucius!

A definite recommend.

Thank you to the Author Lucius for sending me an Arc copy to read and review.

This is a truly gripping and captivating gothic horror with a modern day twist and a hint of swamp monster.

Harlan is a modern day vampire hunter who, when he returns from a nights work, is cornered by his jealous rival, who is power hungry and stops him from working by revoking his hunting licence pending investigation. He then goes to seek refuge with Eli, a father figure and trainer, but on arrival is met by an unexpected visitor - a solicitor with a mysterious and potentially dangerous offer. After thinking about it and going against Eli's advise he makes his way to Thornhill Manor.

After meeting the solicitor and Sebastian, an unexpected second person, and a tour of the mansion, the solicitor leaves them there for them to meet the owner who summoned them. Lyrica. who informs them they are distant relatives and heirs to the mansion. but that is not all.........

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. I cannot wait to read the next instalment.

Highly recommend.

A deliciously dark Gothic tale of epic proportions - the beginning of trilogy that is sure to only get better. This story follows Harlan Thorne, a professional hunter of paranormal beings as he discovers the truth of his roots.

I absolutely loved the writing style, it is almost poetic in the descriptive quality. I especially enjoyed the story of Harlan's family being told first hand from Lyrica. I think this added a unique quality to the story and the exposition and setting up the history and leading into the rising action. I think the patient history that is given in the story-like quality of sitting with an old friend adds to the depth of the story and the development of the characters.

I don't want to give to much away, or say too much about the story because I think this type of story is best enjoyed in its fullness unblemished by spoilers.

Valiant has a unique writing style and tone that easily relates to readers and draws them into the world that he is creating. I look forward to reading the remaining books in this series and seeing more from this author.

This is a different type of vampire book. While the book is about vampires, there isn’t a lot of vampiric activity happening in it. What there is, is an entertainingly told story about a family of vampires and the origins of a vampire legend that has been haunting a city.

The prose in this book is lush and gothic, but the setting is current. I found I had to remind myself that it was set in current times, the writing style was that true to an older gothic timeframe. Because of this, I really enjoyed the writing and atmosphere this book delivers. The characters are well developed, the storyline intriguing, and the world building nicely done.

I think this is a great start to a new dark fantasy series, and I’m looking forward to reading book two!

I'm sure that many people are going to see "vampire hunter" in the synopsis and expect blood-soaked battles on every page, Instead, we get a brooding gothic horror that is low on gore an high on atmosphere.

There are definitely some pieces of the story that serve as the beginning threads for what is to come later in the series, which only adds to the overall mystery of the piece.

This is a fabulous debut novel from Lucius Valiant and it sets up the rest of the series nicely, leaving you wanting more when all is said and done. Fans of Anne Rice will get a kick out of this one, for sure, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
