Natasha's mother, Wanda, is getting married to wealthy businessman Orson Chatsworth and the senior couple hope for something simple but Natasha simply won't have it. Her mother needs the big wedding Natasha has always dreamed of but with only a few months to prepare, it's impossible to find a venue. Sophie finds the perfect spot for the engagement party, a new venue in the works owned by her new acquaintance Colin Warren. The place is still under construction when Sophie arrives and a grumpy old man tries to chase her away. Colin is eager to host the engagement party and appear on Natasha's TV show. Next, Sophie arranges for Orson's daughter, Stella, to cater the event with her custom charcuterie boards. With everything all settled, the party can go on and the happy couple toasted. Sophie is surprised when Orson pulls her aside and asks her to come by his antiques store as he has something he wants to ask her, privately. Sophie is curious but Orson dies before he can ask his question! Orson collapsed after drinking and eating at the party and Sophie suspects daffodil poisoning. His death was certainly not natural and neither is his will which leaves a BIG inheritance to Sophie! Everyone in town is gossiping in a nasty way as Sophie puzzles out why Orson left her his store. Soon she figures out his reason and she, Mars, Bernie and Nina must figure out Orson's big secrets. Sophie would also like to know who broke into the store and if it has any connection to Orson's death. Sophie isn't sure who to trust, only her closest friends, but she's determined to solve the murder and figure out Orson's other big secret.
As usual this mystery was top notch. There was a lot going on which is normally the case in this series but it ended up mostly being connected. I never guessed who! There are only 5 suspects and they all seemed too obvious. Sometimes the obvious solution is the best one. I thought one of the other people was the murderer but did suspect certain characters were up to no good.
I really liked Sophie's investigation in this one. She brings in her friends, including Wolf, and doesn't do anything stupid. I like how she's independent and confident. Sophie doesn't need a man in her life to be happy. She's comfortable being friends with Mars and Bernie as much as she's friends with Nina. She's still too nice for me. Mars is too nice too. I'm surprised they're divorced. Mars needed to stand up to Natasha a long time ago and he's paying for it now. She doesn't seem to understand they're not together and he doesn't like her. I don't think he ever did. Natasha is so selfish and whiny. Plenty of other people have the same background and don't whine about it the way she does. The only character I truly like is the one person who tells off Natasha. She doesn't listen. She doesn't want to hear it. All Natasha hears are the voices in her own head.
Nina and Francie really get into the investigating. I love that! Nina is a hoot. Nina's bequest was obvious even before Orson announced it. Rosebud seems sweet and she is happy with Muppet at Nina's. I think Nina made the wrong decision in the long run for Rosebud, unless Rosebud is a senior and then her decision makes sense. Mars and Bernie provide information and accompany Sophie at her request. This time they don't act macho and overprotective and Sophie manages to solve the crime without nearly getting killed. See, she's an adult, she can take care of herself! Wanda deserves happiness. Her needs are simple and she's content running her herb farm and herbal remedy business but she seems to love Orson. He'll be good to her and treat her like a queen while respecting her independence. Wanda is the only one who doesn't want Orson's money so even though they seem like a mismatch, I agree with Sophie that he's attracted to Wanda because she doesn't have her hand out. She's made it this far without much and business is starting to take off. She loves Orson because he's a good person. Depending on who you ask, anyway.
Orson was a doting father, if maybe a bit overprotective. He loved Stella with all his heart and finally, at the end of his life, he realized he had made mistakes. He always swooped in to save the day when she needed it and now she's struggling. He knows Stella needs to find her passion and land on her own two feet. However, because he adores his grandkids, he will provide for them in his own way. While his divorce wasn't amicable and we don't know the reason, he seems like he would have been a good husband too. Orson was a bit of a rascal when it came to his antiques business. His rival, Karl, is awful and unscrupulous. Karl hated Orson for playing tricks on him at auctions. Karl is maybe not as knowledgable about antiques as Orson and swindles people. Karl also doesn't have as much money even though his prices are outrageous. His shop is overcrowded and his living area shabby. Or maybe he's cheap and spends all his money on antiques. Did Karl murder Orson?
I didn't think Stella would murder her dad. She seemed nice at first but then after the bombshell video will, Stella acts like a *itch. I know she's grieving and Sophie is a stranger but has her dad ever let her down? He explained his reasons and they make sense. He left her a substantial inheritance in property and money for her kids' education. That's enough. Stella flip-flops between horrible and nice and back again. Her estranged husband, Jordan, certainly has the most motive for murder. He's a ne'er do well, lazy good for nothing who always has his hand out. He's an idle dreamer having tried and failed to open two restaurants. He wants a third chance but Stella wants a divorce and therefore, her father's money is out of Jordan's hands. He's angry and pretending he's a nice guy, attentive father and husband. Jordan wants Stella back to get his hands on the money. Did he murder Orson thinking Stella would get all the money and Jordan could take it? How dumb is this guy? From other things Sophie uncovers about him, I'm surprised he wasn't the one murdered.
Orson's ex-wife, Myra, is bitter about the divorce and even more so about Orson's bequest. (A hilarious one if you ask me). What does she need his money for? It sounds like she wanted it for her grandchildren and they got it in trust for their education. Their mother can work to provide for them. Wanda managed to care for Natasha with far less. Wanda is mean to Sophie and snippy at times. She's protective of her family so I don't think she's the murderer. She may have thought about it but how could she do that to the daughter she loves beyond belief and her beloved grandkids? They're cute kids but no one addressed the elephant in the room. How are they holding up? Do they know their grandpa was murdered? Do they even know he's dead and what that means? Obviously the baby doesn't and maybe the little girl but the oldest one might.
Orson was kind of cold to Audrey Evans, his former partner. However, as Sophie digs into their relationship I got the impression that Audrey is kind of a Natasha. She latched on to Orson and his money and he was too nice to send her packing. Audrey isn't very friendly or open with Sophie but she's a nurse. Would she kill someone? Her nephew, Tripp Fogarty, lives with her. His colleague, Joan Jankowski was hit over the head with a charcuterie board and died. He arrived just after Sophie and Nina discovered Joan and after Stella walked in. The timing would have to be very tight if he killed her. What motive did he have and how does that connect to Orson's death? Sophie adds Doreen Donahue to the suspect list. I feel sorry for Doreen. She learned to live by her wits at a young age and her mother didn't have a moral compass so Doreen was never taught what is right or wrong. She does seem to have some idea that what she's doing is wrong but not totally. She needs help. Bernie seems compassionate.
Colin Warren is nice to Sophie but a Natasha fan. He's eager for publicity to promote his new venue but Natasha?! His uncle Terry, on the other hand, is not so nice. He is not a people person and is more than rough around the edges. He's a bully and prejudiced against Sophie without checking to see who she is and what she wants. He just dismisses her because she's not construction crew and because she flashes a "fancy business card" he assumes is hers. Yeesh. He doesn't even know his own nephew has fancy business cards already? I say that is probably presumptuous of Colin. I don't trust these Warrens and think they may be involved in the case somehow. Terry's sister Sharon seems nice and her daughter, Bonnie, is chatty and friendly. Obviously not all the Warrens are horrible.
While this series isn't my top favorite, I enjoy Krista Davis's writing and will probably continue to read the series. None of the recipes in this one appealed to me.
