SIMULTANEOUS HARDCOVER AND TRADE PAPERBACK RELEASE!

Siblings Martin, Kelsey, Beth, and Jonny are as different as can be, but they have one thing in common. They’re all longing to reinvent their lives. Raised by their divorced lapsed-Amish father and English mother, they only knew real stability and a sense of family when visiting their Old Order grandparents, Josiah and Sylvia Schrock, in peaceful small-town Millersburg, Ohio. Now the four want to try living with them and joining their faith—much to the Schrocks’ surprise . . .

Martin, the eldest, is reeling from a bad breakup, so he’s especially determined to make a fresh start. When he meets his grandparents’ neighbor, Patti Coblentz, he’s immediately drawn to her outgoing, helpful nature—but is so overwhelmed that he appears blunt and rude. Is there any way he can drop his defenses enough to admit she’s captured his heart?

Always self-conscious about the birthmark on her temple, Patti is resigned to never marrying and busying herself with the responsibilities of the large home and property she has inherited. Besides, Martin’s ill-mannered behavior and disconcerting directness make him the last man she’d ever want to wed—no matter how handsome he is.

Yet given time and patience—and adhering to their grandparents’ unexpectedly challenging rules—the whole family might just find what they’re looking for, even Martin and Patti.

I found A is for Amish to be unusual and original in the premise, quite engaging and enjoyable. Four young twenty something year old siblings grew up close and supporting of each other when their parents divorced and became self absorbed. In an attempt to find happiness, they decide to explore their Amish roots by moving back to their grandparents home to see if the Amish life is a fit. Two of the adults, Kelsey and Martin are the first to move in with the grandparents. Will they miss the convenience of the English life, electricity, cell phones, computers, and cars? What will happen if they develop a romantic interest in the Amish world but go back to their old world? This is a very good read and I look forward to the next story.

I have wanted to read this book since before it was released. I finally got the opportunity this past week. I was first drawn to the book because of the title. I’m no stranger to Shelley Shepard Gray’s books so I knew it would be a good read. I thought the cover was beautiful. I found the story to be an original and I was completely drawn into the book from page one. The ending was sad but with a hint of happiness to come. This is book one of the Amish ABCs series so it’s the best time to read it. Book two will be B Is for Bonnet and it releases in January 2025. It will pick up where book one left off. I loved this book and I’m delighted that I got to read it.
A Is for Amish is a series about four siblings that live in the city of Cleveland Ohio. Their Father was raised Amish but he jumped the fence into the English world and married a city woman. The children spent summers with their Amish grandparents when they were growing up. Now they are educated and working in the city. They can’t forget their summers spent with their grandparents and feel drawn to their Amish heritage. They wonder what it would be like to live a plain life. Like moths being drawn to the light they decide to spend a year living with their Amish grandparents. They want to live the plain life for a year and find out if they might be more happy if they were to be baptized into that faith. This is their story and their experiences will be told in this book and the following books of this series. Can they find true happiness in being Amish or will they go back to live as Englishers when their year of adapting to a different life style is over?
I highly recommend A Is for Amish to readers of Amish fiction and Amish romance. Readers of Christian fiction will enjoy this book.
I borrowed a digital copy of this book from the Hoopla Library. I have been honest in my comments about my reading experience with this book.

Shelley Shepard Gray has so many series out, she just keeps turning them out. This is a good thing though. I haven't read a book of hers I didn't like or couldn't relate to. She's one of my favorite go to Amish writing authors. I'm not sure how many books will be in this series, but this is the start of the newest series publishing June 2024.
4 siblings are looking for their anchor in life. They have been raised by a former Amish father and Englisher mother. They have a close bond and the older have always looked out for the younger.
These siblings haven't had the best of upbringings and feel peace of mind when they visit their Old-Order grandparents in Ohio.
Will they find the serene happiness they are seeking when they all decide to move to their grandparent's house and want to embrace their lifestyle and become Amish? Will this give them what they have been missing out on in life? Life never seems to go as we plan though, and curveballs can be expected at the most unexpected times. All their circumstances are different but yet the same in many ways. I enjoyed all the characters but wasn't sure about the decisions they would make.
I have read this author's books for many years and always enjoy them. This one ended on a cliff-hanger so I'm sure it'll take us right into the next in the series.

A IS FOR AMISH is the first book in Amish ABC series by Shelley Shepard Gray. Its the story of four siblings who have decided to become Amish. They descend onto their shocked grandparents home and it is sure to pull on the reader’s heart strings. It will give you all the feels, let me tell you. The four siblings all feel like outsiders in this new community and make a pact based on this. They will take turns living in the Amish community for one year to see if its what they really want. My emotions were all over the place and I was giggling one minute and tearing up, the next. I really liked the setting of the small town of Millersburg and its history. I really got to know the people of this beautiful, small Pennsylvania town and I also know I will fall more in love with all of these characters.

A IS FOR AMISH is a wonderful story of family and new friends that will worm their way into your heart. Hang on to your seats! The twists and turns will keep you flipping the pages long into the night. Patti lives next door to the siblings grandparents and is quickly swept up in all their lives. She also has a big secret that she doesn’t share with just anyone! The ending of A IS FOR AMISH is rather sad, but their is also hope for what may come. Do you think the four siblings will stay or go? What ever their decision is, it won’t be easy either way!

A IS FOR AMISH is a quick read that you can easily read in one sitting and love every minute of it. It is one heck of a crazy emotional roller coaster ride. I have never met a Shelley Shepard Gray book that I didn’t love and once I started reading I knew I was going on one heck of an emotional journey! All of the characters have their flaws and that just makes the reader love them even more. Whatever you are reading, put it down, and run and get this book! If you’ve never read a Shelley Shepard Gray novel (and you know who you are) this would be a perfect one to hook you!

Four siblings, raised English because their father had jumped the fence, decide to return to their dawdi's and mommi's farm to become Amish. Only two remain, per their dawdi's request, to fulfill a yearlong test to see if they truly want to be Amish. Once these two decide, the other two will do the same. Through struggles adjusting to the changes, will they remain and become Amish, or will they return to being English? Shelley Shepard Gray left such a cliff-hanger at the end of A is for Amish. Cannot wait for a sequel (there will be a sequel, won't there?). I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Imagine — you are an Amish grandparent. You have four Englisher grandchildren. And all four of them show up – no heads up — announcing they want to be Amish. All four of them at the same time! AND they expect not only to live with them BUT also to help them every step of the way. You will admire how Josiah and Sylvia Schrock handle this surprise.

Martin, the oldest of the four, is successful in his career but it no longer fulfills him. And a bad ending to a relationship has him remembering the calm and serenity he always felt when visiting his Amish grandparents.

Martin’s siblings, Kelsey, Beth, and Jonny, are all different. Jonny is in college. Beth has a successful career. Kelsey is the youngest and out of the four, the one who truly wants to live the Amish life. The rest “think” they do and luckily for them their grandparents have wunderbar advice.

Another principal character is an Amish neighbor, Patti Coblentz, who is self-conscious of a birthmark on her neck. She feels it is the first thing people see when meeting her and some kidding by children during her school days didn’t help. Oh, and there is the very single Amish preacher.

A Is for Amish is the first of a new series by this prolific author, Shelley Shepard Gray. And what an unusual plot. As a grandparent, I could easily imagine myself as Sylvia Schrock faced with four grown grandchildren stating not only were they moving in but she and Josiah were expected to “make” them Amish. The idea is wonderful; the implementation is a nightmare.

The author handles this interesting plot beautifully. The decisions made by the four are reasonable and doable. The preacher adds some fun situations. I quite liked this first book of the series, Amish ABCs, and look forward to the next book. And yes, I recommend it.

I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of A Is for Amish via NetGalley from the publisher, Kensington Books | Kensington. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I could not stop reading this book! The story began with four adult siblings, grandchildren of Amish grandparents, but having been raised English, making the pronouncement that all four of them want to try living as Amish. The grandparents and the Bishop have recommendations for how to go about this and it is decided that two of the siblings will begin a one year trial period and see how things go.

The decisions that Martin and Kelsey have to make are not cut and dried. There were things that worked well for them and things that didn’t. Ways they fit and ways they struggled. There were love interests that developed for both Martin and Kelsey, however, that didn’t ensure that their transitions into Amish life were secured.

I appreciated the honest way these two looked at things. Even when it seemed that Martin was overly critical of himself and not completely happy in either the English world or the Amish world, it soon became clear that he was genuinely trying to make the right decision for himself, knowing that it would impact not only him, but also his family and the woman he was falling for.

The author wrapped part of the story up with a beautiful happily ever after, while leaving a wonderful opening for the next story to take place. I’m eager to see who tries the Amish life next and also am excited to see how a continuing storyline flows through into the next book.

“You’re not afraid of giving up your life… you’re afraid that even after doing all this, you still won’t be happy.”

A is for Amish took so many different turns that I wasn’t expecting, and I love that even after years of reading Shelley Shepard Gray’s books she can still surprise me!

I find the concept of this series to be really intriguing – four siblings who long for more peace and meaning in their lives want to move in with their Amish grandparents and become Amish themselves. Of course it’s not going to be that simple, and I appreciated the approach that Gray takes – both in the wisdom their grandparents show and in (the first two to try it) Martin & Kelsey’s struggles to adjust to Plain life. Their understandably-mixed emotions (and not-cut-and-dried decisions) had me wondering if I could do it – and (because I know you’re dying to know lol) I think that as long as there were books to read I could probably give up my phone and my computer and the internet and TV… but I know I couldn’t give up air conditioning (unless there are Amish in Alaska maybe) and I know I couldn’t gather eggs from pecky chickens.

Making all of this even more complicated is that Martin and Kelsey have fallen for more than just the idea of Amish life – they’ve each fallen in love with a member of the community, too. Both romances took me by surprise, though for different reasons, and the personality of each romance is just as contrasting as Martin & Kelsey’s respective personalities. One budding relationship is sweet but very multi-layered and had me shedding a few tears, too (and I suspect it will be an ongoing arc of the series which I’m eager to follow), and one is everything swoony and breathless and made me grin big. For all the uncertainty revolving around this possible conversion for them, one thing that Martin and Kelsey definitely have in common is the sincere desire to make the right decision for the right reasons, and I so respected them for this.

Bottom Line: It didn’t take getting too far into A is for Amish for me to become completely immersed in the Schrock siblings’ determination to convert to the Amish faith, as well as the complications, emotions, and relationships they encounter in the process. Their grandparents are colorful characters who may be just as conflicted about their grandchildren’s decisions as the siblings themselves are but also pour wisdom, love, and stability into the situation. Martin and Kelsey, the sibling focus of this particular book, are easy to love – and so are their romantic counterparts – and I was invested heart-first in their struggles and triumphs, as well as their love stories. And when I say ‘heart-first’ I mean I giggled, I grinned, I swooned, and I cried, and kudos to author Shelley Shepard Gray for writing such a fresh and unique Amish fiction plot! I look forward to reading the other books in this series and will be waiting most impatiently for them to release!

Book one in a new series by, Shelley Shepard Gray, A IS FOR AMISH is an easy read suited for 14+ year old romance fans.

Four Englisch siblings from divorced, irresponsible parents, have decided they want to join their Amish grandparents. They’re not happy living the fast paced, technologically advanced lifestyle and head out of the city to visit their grandparents to share the idea of moving in with them to study becoming Amish. Surprise!

Needless to say, the grandparents were more than a little taken aback. A plan is agreed upon and two of the four siblings move in with their grandparents. This premise was a good idea for a storyline but it didn’t end up being the primary plot. In very short order, both siblings are thunderstruck by an Amish character and have found the love of their respective lives. We’re talking less than two months time. It’s so preposterous, especially when you consider the remaining details in the story, (no spoilers from me!), that the rest was tainted.

Gray is a good writer and the pages went flying by very quickly. Unfortunately, I was shaking my head knowing that none of my Amish friends would ever consider such absurd actions, for sure and certain. If you don’t care about a realistic experience, then the story will be very entertaining. The characters are easy to become involved with and because this is an ongoing series, the last chapter is a a big tease to get readers wanting the next book to hurry along.
One arc is cleanly resolved, one is the hook for book two and a third is introduced as a mystery, of sorts.

There should be four books in this series, one for each sibling. Book two, B IS FOR BONNET, is due in January 2025. For me, I’d like to see a more realistic portrayal of Amish life but perhaps Gray is looking to reach a different audience. If that’s the case, the classifications need to be changed on Amazon and elsewhere📚

A is for Amish new series by Shelley Shepard Gray is another exceptional read. I was drawn in from page one. I could not put this book down. It’s about 4 children who set out to tell their grandparents they want to become Amish. Their father was raised in the Amish community when he was younger. But left the community to become English. The children’s parents have divorced and they want to move in with the grandparents and become Amish. The news overwhelms the grandparents that all 4 want to become Amish. So the grandparents suggest they choose who will go first. Based on Kelsey and Martin they must learn the ways and then decide if they’ll be baptized or not. Love is to be found as well as choices to be made. Can they actually give up all the that they know of the English life they’ve lived their whole lives.
From finding love to making decisions, it grabs you from page one and draws your attention. I’ve read many books by Shelley Shepard Gray and this is my absolute new favorite! Her books just have a way with its messages , love stories and trials that we all go through in life. Her writing takes her readers on the journey of her characters. Keeping your attention and making you want to read more. It’s why I love her books so much. I look forward to the second book in this series. Happy Reading!

This book is the first in a new series. Josiah and Sylvia Schrock are an elderly married couple. They had one son who left the Amish faith. He married an Englisher and they had four children. Josiah and Sylvia were very close to their grandchildren who are now in the 20’s. The grandchildren spent time with their grandparents while growing up and are familiar with the Amish ways. This book starts off where all four of the grandchildren come to the grandparents to tell them that they want to become Amish. Since their house is very small with only one bathroom, the grandparents tell their four grandchildren that they can only have two at a time to live with them. So Martin and Kelsey decide that they will go first and decide that they will each spend one year with the grandparents and then decide if they should continue in the Amish faith or go back to their lives. I enjoyed the book and I give it five stars. I think that it will be interesting to see how many of the four decide to become Amish. I am looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

This is the first of a new series by the author. She gives us books about four siblings who are considering turning Amish after their parents have divorced and ignored them. Their grandparents, who are Amish have always been a positive example in their lives. They remember how wonderful the times were they would have when they would visit their grandparents farm.

Each of the siblings are dealing with their own issues and looking for answers and a change in their lives. The grandparents are so shocked when they find out but chose to encourage them. They tell them they will allow 2 of the siblings to live with them for a year as they try out the Amish lifestyle. It is not an easy choice as they would be leaving good jobs, homes, electricity, cars and all the English ways of life.

This book covers Martin, the eldest, and his sister Kelsey. You will love reading how they learn to fit into the Amish lifestyle and if they truly think they can change from the English life.

I highly recommend this book. It is an easy, fast read that you will not want to put down until you finish it.

This is a sweet Amish romance with a few twists and surprises along the way. Martin, Kelsey, Beth and Jonny are siblings who want to leave their old, modern life behind and join their grandparents in the Amish community. They make the decision for Martin and Kelsey to take the leap of faith first, so those two move in with their Mommi and Dawdi, determined to adapt to the Amish way of life and dress. The tale of their adventures is heart-tugging at times as well as told very realistically. The pace of the story is perfect for the story being revealed to the reader about their feelings and actions as they adjust. The characters are dynamic and relatable, especially their hesitation at times to leave their old life behind. I enjoyed the story, the characters and the idea of more stories to come in this new series.

A is for Amish is the first book in a series about an Amish couple’s four adult grandchildren who were raised ‘English’ but now want to join the Amish community. Are they ready to give up their modern lifestyles and can they each find a way to fit in?

This turned out to be a very lucky Goodreads Giveaway win for me. I wouldn’t have known about it otherwise since I don’t read much Amish fiction. That will be changing - the minute I finished this I looked to see when the next one was coming out. My thanks to GR Giveaways and the publisher for a copy to review.

This is another interesting book by Shelley Shepard Gray. "A is for Amish" is about a family that was left shattered when their parents divorced and left their four children to fend for themselves. Their father was raised Amish but left the faith. Their children spent many summers with their Amish grandparents. Now as young adults, all four siblings think they want to join The Amish faith. When they visit their grandparents and present this to them, they are very surprised. They agree to allow two of them to live with them for a year and see if The Amish way of life is really what they want. Martin and Kelsey are the first two to move in with their grandparents. Kelsey adapts quickly, falls in love with the preacher and puts in the work involved to become Amish. Martin has a harder time giving up his "Englisch" ways. Even though he has met Patti, his grandparent's neighbor, and falls in love with her. There are many ups and downs in this story. It's a story about family, love, new experiences and rediscovering their faith. I recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.

Shelley Shepard Gray hit this one out of the park! Amish ABCs is a new series that follows the Schrock siblings on their unforgettable adventure and discover the true meaning of faith, family, and the ABCs of life.

Set in Ohio, Josiah and Sylvia Schrock are an elderly Amish couple who’s four grandchildren, Martin, Beth, Kelsey, and Jonny, are struggling with their beliefs and where they fit. The grandparents were shocked when their grandchildren approached them wanting to become Amish, but still encouraged them. Martin and Kelsey choose to take the journey first and move in with their grandparent for a year leaving the English ways behind. Kelsey is sure of what she wants; while Martin really struggles. I loved to see their faith grow as they discover God’s plan for each of them.

A is for Amish is sure to warm your heart. I highly recommend this book! It is a fast easy read that you will not want to put down until you finish it.

Set in Holmes County, Ohio, A is for Amish commences the Amish ABCs series which follows the Schrock siblings—Martin, Kelsey, Beth, and Jonny—Englishers who have decided they need a life change, and becoming Amish may be the solution. This first book in the series is Martin and Kelsey’s story. I love Kelsey and the way her romantic relationship with Richard develops, but I had a hard time connecting with Martin. His indecisiveness became quite tedious. I was also drawn to the other two siblings Beth and Jonny. The story features interesting characters, a slow-paced and character-driven plot, an authentic Amish setting, a gentle faith thread, and a touch of romance. Although this book did not meet all my expectations, it was still an enjoyable read, and I think fans of Amish fiction will enjoy it. Since there is a “to be continued” ending, I will in all probability read future books in the series.

I loved this book, I read it in one day. Four English siblings have decided they want to join their grandparents and become Amish, their plans don't go quite like they planned after talking to their grandparents. It's decided two of the siblings will go stay a year. and learn the ways of amish life. And even though they had faith in God, they soon learn there is more to being Amish than just beliefs, can they give up their English life and convenience and go to the life they were so sure they wanted, it's a wonderful story of faith, love, and acceptance. Change isn't easy and everyone is different in how they adapt and that's ok.
Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington books for the chance to read this book. My thoughts are my own. #Netgalley #AisforAmish #Kensingtonbooks #ShelleyShepardGray #amishfiction

This is the first book I’ve read from this author, my second book I’ve ever read about the Amish. I know a lot about the Amish as we vacation a lot in the Lancaster PA area. This was a great book about a set of 4 siblings who decided that they each want to become Amish, like their grandparents. It’s fun watching Kelsey and Richard’s relationship bloom and watching Martin start developing who he really wants to be as he struggles with being Amish and if it’s for him or if he wants to stay English. This is a great story of the first two young people discovering themself, with a little laugher, love and sadness in order to get there. This was a great read other than how it ended. I feel like it ended strange and it was missing something. Perhaps due to this being the first book, and the author wants you to keep reading the next ones. I felt like it just ended and left you hanging.

If you're searching for a captivating book with characters you can truly connect with, this one won't let you down. From the very beginning, when I discovered that four English siblings decided to leave their world behind to become Amish, I knew it was going to be an intriguing read. I wasn't wrong—I couldn't put it down.
I do feel for the grandparents though as their lives were turned upside down, but give them kudos for how they handled what their grandchildren want to do. Another thing I must mention is that hen Anna, boy she could have her own story. There were moments when I found myself laughing for the characters when they couldn't, a testament to the book's emotional depth. I am eagerly anticipating the next installment in this series.

A is for Amish

Wow! I have never read a book through so fast and become so involved in the story that I didn’t realize I was at the end! I thought my tablet was malfunctioned! You become so involved in the lives of the Grandchildren of an older Amish couple that I could not read fast enough! The 4 grandchildren are raised English but realize that they want to try at becoming Amish. Realizing that taking on 4 grandchildren all at once is a large undertaking at their age so decide for 2 to stay for 1 year. There are many twists and turns to their new life and will love become involved? I can’t wait for book 2 of this series! This book is a must to read!

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher.

Another outstanding book by Shelley Shepard Gray. Follow along as siblings decide to leave their English way of life to become Amish. Complete reverse of what we usually read when the Amish want to live the English way of life. Will it be as easy as they think? Will they be able to adhere to and follow the rules? I enjoyed reading the book and looked forward to seeing what the siblings would figure out for themselves. Such a fun book filled with faith and stepping out of a comfort zone to try something new. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. All words are my own.

Another wonderful Amish book written by Shelley Shepard Gray., Thanks to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for allowing me to get a copy before publication date and to review it. This book tells the story of 4 siblings who have paternal Amish grandparents. Their dad left the Amish faith and became English. This story follows the siblings as they try to figure out if they want to become Amish. It is a very well written book that deals with the Amish and English world, faith in God, and romance between some of the characters. I highly recommend this book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher
Kensington Books for this book.

I love Shelley Shepherd Gray's books and this one is no exception. I enjoyed reading about the different struggles the two young adults, Kelsey and Martin, face in their quest to live Amish after being raised in the Englis world.

I will not give away the story, but you can imagine the many struggles they face.

I look forward to book two in the series.

Recommend.

Loved reading the riveting story of four siblings, Martin, Beth, Kelsey, and Jonny, want to become Amish like their grandparents. Martin and Kelsey are the first two siblings that agree to a year learning about what it all entails to being Amish, but as Martin falls for the next door neighbor, Patti, Martin begins to have doubts about being Amish. Read the highly recommended, wonderfully written, and a must read story. Can't wait to read the next story in the series!

4 siblings raised English but whom spent a lot of time with Amish grandparents during childhood. Decide they may want to become Amish. So with the grandparents approval 2 siblings at a time may come stay for a year and see if they want to be Amish. So Martin and Kelsey go first. They have some trails and some decisions to make some are easier for one more than the other. They both find love during this time. I can’t not wait to read the next book in the series.
