Our relationship is complex. His ancestors took over my planet. I’m descended from the few who survived. To say we have issues is to put it mildly. He wants me off his warship. I’m more than happy to oblige. The ones who stay end up love-sick. Bound to one of them for all time. I’m immune. Luckily. Their sickness will never be mine. Except... I might be immune, but he’s not. Now the worst thing has happened. I’m panicking and out of time. My enemy is hunting. Obsessed with one prey. Me. And somehow this might actually be fine...

Characters and Plot Summary
Falkion and Zeerah’s dynamic grabbed me right away because their first encounter sets the tone for everything that follows. Falkion is one of the elite Blades of Arris, a conqueror bred for war and precision, yet he’s carrying a quiet fracture inside him that becomes more obvious the longer he’s around Zeerah. She’s a human survivor who has learned to navigate danger with a mix of stubborn courage and sharp instincts. I liked that her strength isn’t loud. It shows in small moments, like when she refuses to flinch the first time Falkion towers over her in full armor, even though the scene makes it clear she’s terrified.
The plot kicks off when Falkion is ordered to secure Zeerah for reasons that become more complicated as the story unfolds. Their early journey together has a tense, almost brittle energy. One scene that stuck with me is when they’re forced to shelter in a ruined outpost and Zeerah insists on keeping watch herself. Falkion tries to override her, but she snaps back that she’s been surviving without him for years. That moment felt like the first crack in his conqueror persona. As the stakes rise, the story shifts from survival to something more intimate, especially once Falkion realizes Zeerah is the one who triggers his dormant instincts.
Highlights and Limitations
One of the strongest parts of the book is how their relationship evolves through specific actions rather than declarations. Falkion’s protectiveness isn’t abstract. It shows when he physically shields Zeerah during a sudden ambush, taking a hit that would have killed her. Zeerah’s trust builds slowly, and I appreciated that she doesn’t just melt the moment he shows interest. Her hesitation during the scene where he tries to teach her how to use Arris tech felt very real. She wants to rely on him, but she’s still weighing the cost.
If I had one personal frustration, it’s that I wanted a bit more clarity around Falkion’s internal conflict. There’s a moment where he pulls away from Zeerah after an intense bonding scene, and while the emotional impact is strong, I wished the narrative lingered just a little longer on what exactly scared him. It’s hinted at, but I wanted that beat to land harder.
Narration
Yasmine Johnson and Evan Parker deliver a dual performance that fits the tone of the story. Johnson gives Zeerah a grounded, resilient voice that still softens in moments of vulnerability. I especially liked her delivery during the scene where Zeerah admits she’s tired of running. Parker’s performance as Falkion is deep and controlled, but he lets emotion slip through in subtle ways. His voice tightens during the outpost confrontation, and that tiny shift made the tension feel sharper. Their pacing works well together, especially in scenes where the dialogue overlaps with action.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this audiobook felt like a satisfying blend of danger, intimacy, and character-driven tension. Falkion and Zeerah’s connection builds through specific choices and moments, not shortcuts, and that made me care about them more than I expected. The narration enhances the emotional beats, and while I wished for a bit more depth in Falkion’s internal struggle, the story still delivered a compelling arc that kept me listening straight through.
This series is my current obsession and what an ending. It was so satisfying. I’m also glad there’s another book following the almost dead ruler who is recovering. It leaves it open to even more books. It doesn’t close the door completely. But it’s still a very satisfying ending to the series. Now it’ll focus on growth and recuperation. Also, the Harsi are still out there so it leaves it open to even more war. Who knows.
This story follows our fearless human captain Zeerah. I absolutely loved her relationship with Falkion. These couples really do compliment each other. She has always, her whole life, ran away. Running has kept her alive. Literally. Falkion is her safe harbor. He knows she has to run away and lets her but is always there to safely catch her and what a delight. And what a smart man who listens!! She has never had anyone listen to her either and he just does what she says. Amazing!!! I loved them together so much.
The standout in this was the tension between the MCs. Unfortunately, I do wish it had been more delved into. They were slowly getting closer and then the last half of the book was straight up battle scene and science officers discussing tactics to beat the enemy....not one ounce put into the relationship. Then suddenly the formerly reticent FMC is utterly in love. We've missed some steps here.
The spice wasn't bad, I do love a 'inexperienced, grown alien MMC learning what sex is' scene. That was hot. But they didn't have much variety on page in their scenes. It was the same thing each time, no real foreplay. Also, the orgasm for every thrust was a bit of an odd choice. It kinds of cuts a scene off at the knees when every thrust is a finish.
The finale felt so rushed. After 5 books of build up, I wanted to know more about their enemy and technology. I’d like to have witnessed a teaming up with more allies working together to defeat the threat.
Zeerah is the female Captain from Nigeria who brought all of the infected woman aboard her ship with the hopes of transporting them to Vanadis for a possible cure. But her plans are thwarted when her ship is attacked by Eruvisan pirates.
She takes an escape pod & her pod is suprisingly retrieved by the same Arisians who still believe that humans are less than.
To escape her fate of death Zeerah becomes a stowaway on the Arisian ship for quite some time until she is discovered by the person she tried to take the identity of. Zeerah is brought before the captain of the ship- Captain Falkion & before he has a chance to punish her, they are intercepted by Vanadisans who spray him with an unknown substance.
Later on they discover Falkion was bonded to her against his will with a twisted mating spray. Zeerah is unaffected by this spray because she is a normal human without lusteal in her system. But the mating spray has an immediate effect on Falkion & he is determined to give her anything within his means to get her to not want to leave him.
This is a forced proximity romance & the conclusion of this series. I love the diversity in the female leads throughout these stories & really wish we could see that in more books. Im looking forward to reading more books by this author.
Falkion and Zeerah's romance definitely has a different feel from the other books in this series and that turned out to be a great thing. The new dynamic between these characters was a fresh twist that let you look at things from a different angle and I thought that was quite smart and very clever. It was easy to feel their attraction and chemistry zinging and zapping back and forth right along with their complex feelings, emotions and desires. As this is the final book in this series the overarching story that has been playing out over the course of it wraps up with epic happenings that will have you gasping for breath and hanging onto the edge of your seat. A super read and an excellent way to end a superb series. I'm sad to say goodbye to these characters, this world and this series but I am also so excited to see where this author chooses to take us next. She never disappoints and as usual I am 100% here for it.
This series has been really fantastic, and the last book does not disappoint. The thing I love most about Starla’s stories is that I can always find some part of myself in her female characters. That ability has me invested in the story, escaping reality for a while. Zeerah is the only female character that was not affected by the lusteal dust herself, but she still has to deal with the consequences of getting dosed anyway. Those consequences turn out to be good when she finds love in Captain Falkion. And as has happened in each of the previous books, Zeerah the Human who is considered less than by the Arrisans, is the only one who stands between the return of the Harsi (spoiler alert, they do return) and the destruction of the Empire, her friends and her chance at happily ever after.
If you’ve read the rest of the series, this last book does not disappoint!

I had higher hopes for this book and these characters. I really enjoyed the story that grew between Falkion and Zeerah, they formed, fashioned, and found their happy ending. But the romance of their story felt... less when held up against the others. Maybe its because this entry in the series is more plot focused than previous stories. The conclusion of the immediate threats and struggles was very neatly expressed and wrapped up. Leaving just enough open ends for the workd to feel like it is continuing to live on even after the last page. But it also felt a little anti-clamatic for me. There was a very narrow focus on reaching plot points, and less narrative build up as compared to previous entries in the series. This is a fast paced, action filled romance story. A good story, but one more focused on the major universe plot than on the romance.
I have loved and devoured this series since the start. There is just something so compelling about the writing and the world that you find yourself in. Every single story has been different and they have all had their individual paths to walk, the only similarities being that the women were considered as Lessers in comparison to the Arrisans.
Zeerah has an unprecedented response to the lusteal which takes a really fresh approach to the situation. She is capable and determined. Falkion does what he has been trained to do and yet this time there is something more. These characters are warm and charismatic. The changing POV really helps you feel connected to what is happening. Brilliant series and brilliant ending.
Interesting end to this series. Kinda disappointing that the Arrisan's had to be saved by a race that was completely unknown to us before this book. The talk about the box and all that just flew over my head and the various attacks and interactions didn't make any sense, like why did Zeerah have to be in the bait ship?
Still, it was a nice end to the series. A couple of issues I have had in the last 3 books. The emperor never speaks but big mouth has plenty to say. I think it makes sense that the rest of the Arrisans dislike humans just because of the dynamic established with her being his mouthpiece.
Enjoyed this new to me author and enjoyed the series overall.

Zeerah's default in a crisis is to run and hide. Falkion's response is to fight. But what if there's another way? A Zeerah is a normal uninfected human without lusteal in her system. Falkion sees humans as lesser and is determined to hunt her, the trespasser in his ship, and kill her in gory detail. So what changed? Falkion's POV is amazing. I can't believe this is the last book. I haven't had enough of them I received an advanced readers copy and am giving my honest review.
This is the conclusion to this epic series and I'm thinking this might just be the best one yet. Once again, we get to see how the these 'lesser' humans, especially the women, were so much more important that the Arrisans could ever have conceived. Zeerah and Falkion were fab together but I love that he had to work so hard to make her fall for him. This was such a fun aspect, for me ;D Everything does get wrapped up so I was fully satisfied with this being the last book....other than it's the last book. Lol! Now, I'm looking forward to what's next by this author :D
Captain Falkion and Captain Zeerah's story is one of the best books for me as fantastical as the the Emperor and his Emperess among others, danger, action, adventure, alien sci-fi thriller. Being put Enenmies at every turn and still together they perservere. I read a review copy without obligation. I volunteered an honest review.
Reading the final story in this series is bittersweet. Loved this couple. Loved how the series wrapped up. This was one of my all time favorite series and I’m lost that there won’t be more.
This has been one of my favorite series ever! It has all my favorites! Sci-fi, aliens, space, romance, strong female characters! Amazing Amazing! I need more in this series please please 🙏
Still loving this series! Zeerah and Falkion have yet another kind of relationship. It was interesting to have a female main character who wasn’t messed up by lusteal. Great chemistry and a fun/scary plot with the Harsi.
This book definitely has a different feel to it from that of the other books in this series and that turned out to be a wonderful thing. The new dynamic between these two characters was a fresh twist that let you look at things from a completely different angle and I thought that was smart and clever. The attraction and chemistry between Falkion and Zeerah snapped and sizzled back and forth like lightening and was paired beautifully with plenty of complex feelings, emotions and desires. As this is the final book in this series the overarching story that has been playing out over the course of it wraps up with epic happenings that had me gasping for breath and hanging onto the edge of my seat. All and all a super read and an excellent way to end a superb series. I'm sad to say goodbye to these characters, this world and this series but I am also so excited to see where this author chooses to take us next. She never disappoints and as usual I am 100% here for it. The narration was very well done and the performances given engaging. The voices fit the characters I thought, and it made getting wrapped up in this book easy.
I cannot say enough good things about this series and this book in particular. My only complaint is that this is the end, when I could quite happily read another dozen books set in this universe. The way Starla Night has turned alien romance on its head has been a game changer and has left so many others in this genre feeling empty.
