The House-Sitting Trap

Rate this book
Tori
He’s the former jock who took my V-card in high school and broke my heart. Now I’m stuck sharing a roof and a bed with him. FML. Walking into this house-sitting gig, all I wanted was some time to figure out my life and writing career. So I can’t let Julian Heiss crashing at the place claiming to be the owner’s grandson ruin my plans.

We strike a deal. Four weeks of cohabiting and goodbye.

But the more time we spend together, the more I find him irresistible…ugh.

Julian
Maybe I haven’t been able to write a song for weeks, but music is my everything. Or was. ‘Til she shows up at my place.

Tori Madera’s the biggest regret of my life. So when I see her, I can’t believe my eyes. I was terrible to her in high school, but I’m a changed man. That’s why, stupidly, I don’t tell her she’s in the wrong house.

Now she can’t escape me, and I’ll do anything to win her back. Prove to her I’m worthy.
I’ll have to come clean about my little secret too. But baby steps, alright?

The House-Sitting Trap is a slow-burn, second-chance, forced proximity, romance with tons of spice and laughs. It's the first book in the Fauxy Business series of interconnected standalones and can be read in any order.

DNF 20%. I really tried to persevere with this, but I couldn't do it. The heroine was so immature. For 25 years old, she really had no common sense, constantly made stupid decisions, and was so unbelievably gullible. Who signs up for a house sitting gig and is so stupid that you let yourself into the WRONG house. That is the one fact you'd get right? And also not questioning the hero's very obvious lie about being related to her granny's friend. She dated him in school for christ sake (and was so distraught over what happened), so how do you not know who his grandma is? It's just unbelievable and juvenile. Felt more like a wattpad story.

Filled with so many good tropes, well written relatable characters, and very good spice, Khloe Olivera's The House-Sitting Trap is a fun and light rom-com read. I devoured this in one sitting.

Tori is struggling as she's trying to pursue her dream career of becoming a writer. Desperate for cash, she accepts a house sitting gig - only when she arrives, she runs into Julian, her ex-boyfriend from high school who broke her heart. He's claiming to be the grandson of the house owner and that he's going to be there for the duration of her four week stay. Julian, now in pursuit of his music career, takes this as an opportunity to fix his past mistakes and win her back.

I loved this book - surely it's a little silly considering the circumstances and how easily Tori agrees to everything, but that's honestly the fun of it! Tori only wants what's best for everyone, she'll do anything to support the happiness of Julian and all of her friends as well. Meanwhile, Julian's actively rooting for Tori and her dreams at all times like a cheerleader and it's the sweetest thing.

I looooved the tropes in this one:
second chance
forced proximity
he falls first (and he falls hard)
only one bed

It's so clear that Tori and Julian are good for each other - they work together to build up each other's trust based on their history. Their chemistry is off the charts, creating so much tension as the story unfolds. They communicate well together throughout the book. I love the character development too; Julian repeatedly owns up to negative past behaviour and makes an effort to correct it in the present by being real and honest about what he's feeling. His confidence is sexy, and so is his continuous reassurance for Tori that she's much more talented than she believes. Julian is so swoon-worthy, and his dirty mouth is certainly a plus. These two are so cute together - offering laugh out loud funny moments and excellent doses of spice.

I'm SO excited for the next books in the series. The found family vibes were so well established in this first one with Tori's best girlfriends, I'm really looking forward to seeing what Khloe does with their love stories!

Thank you so much to Khloe Olivera for the eARC in exchange for an honest review! I can't wait to see what she does next!

- Lovers to enemies to lovers

Tori accepts a house-sitting job, but to her surprise, when she arrives, she finds the man who broke her heart 8 years ago. He claims to be the owner grandson. Now they have to share the house. How do you live in the same house with the guy who broke your heart?

I had fun in many moments reading this book. The story has just the right measure of fun, cuteness, and spicy.

I really liked the characters, both the main ones and the secondary ones. Tori is a character that I identified with a lot. Another point is that Julian admits how much of an asshole he was in the past. And Felix and Charlotte, I loved them. I'd love to read more about Felix and Celeste.

I highly recommend this book.

I received an Arc in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you, Khloe Olivera.

Do I typical read smutty romances? No. Barely do I ever read any non-queer romances. HOWEVER, this was so precious!

It warmed my cold, dead, thriller loving heart with all its cheesy love and giggles thrown between the spice.

More importantly than it being FOUR HOT PEPPERS 🌶🌶🌶🌶, she still gave it a full plot with side characters that I loved. And I am expecting another book following Felix, por favor. Gracias.

I really enjoyed this debut! The concept was a fun one with Tori and Julian being stuck in the same house together and it being a second chance romance. I appreciated that Julian accepted that he made some bad decisions in the past and owned up to them. Then again, they were both in high school and we know high schoolers make some dumb decisions. I would have loved a chapter to two to see what had happened to them in the past versus what we were told about it.

Tori was sweet and I felt for her with not knowing what her next step would be in her life. I liked how Julian was there to support her with whatever decision she made as well.

I did feel the main characters were a bit childish for their age and didn't love that their relationship starts back off on a lie. Bit this one was a lot of fun overall.

I'll definitely be reading more from this author in the future because she has a ton of potential!

Tropes:

When I first read this book, it was exactly what I needed. It was a funny rom com. Once the couple got together, it was a whole other story. The dialogue between the two was cheesy. The inner monologues can be a little cringy or annoying. Some of the chapters are pointless.

I could tolerate Julian more than Tori, but he was still insufferable. He acted like Tori could break if you so much as tapped her. Some where in the story he’s observing her cry and he describes her as a porcelain doll. The amount of times he mentions how fragile, weak, sensitive she is is annoying. The time she gets wasted, was UGHHHHH. First he over explains that she over consumed. It’s one time buddy, stop acting like she has a problem. Then, he has his friend stay with her the next day while he runs errands. I get that it’s suppose to come off cute, that he’s taking care of her while she is hungover, but she doesn’t need a baby sitter.

Tori..Tori..Tori.. I can not stand her! I’m sorry. She was immature, dramatic, and had high expectations. In my opinion. I couldn’t stand being in her brain, I wanted to pull my hair out. At the end, when it got to the point to win her back, it dragged on. I really wanted to DNF at this point, but I was already 85% through the book I personally couldn’t. She accepted his apology, but then something she caused happened and Julian got mad and then Tori goes to her friends “he’s being an asshole again”. I wanted to throw my kindle. She caused this situation and then wants to act like Julian didn’t have a right to be irritated. Julian didn’t say anything to her to be an ass. She was being so dramatic. Then Julian apologized for this whole situation and in her mind she says she knows he doesn’t have to apologize but she needs him to anyway. IDK, I just can’t stand her. She expects Julian to bend over backwards and do too much all because he screwed up in high school when he was a teenager.

Like I mentioned above the ending was dragged on. Several miss communicating situations happened that dragged on the apology. The apology where Tori forced Julian to grovel and what about her? Also, there wasn’t really a good ending/rekindling for Julian and his family everything was centered around Tori.

I was so honored to be chosen to be an arc reader for this lovely book! so here are my final thoughts:

i genuinely did enjoy the book, it was hard for me to get through the first half but after getting through it it really did pick up. i loved everything from the plot, to the characters to the romance.
the book made me smile, blush, giggle and awe. it brought out so many emotions that i didn’t think i would react to it. the romance between julian and tori aghhh!! definitely can confirm it was a slow burn! i typically don’t like slow burn because i’m way to inpatient but i promise you if you get through it you won’t regret it!!! the way this man falls hard too, my heart couldn’t take it!! julian has such a way with actions and words he just made me swoon and giggle throughout the whole book.
oh and tori! being latina and growing up in a household that pressures you to figure out what you want to do with your life i completely related to that. especially with the latin community always being so hard on you. your family always means well but sometimes they can be a little to tough on you. i hope to see the author incorporate more latin/latinx hardships their faced with in their general life as in family problems/ household problems or problems in the public.
and to the people who want to know about the spice. PHEW. that spice was everything for me. i need more NOW. i loved loved loved it. it was definitely well written 😅😅
i definitely cant wait to read more from this author and hope to be a potential arc reader for her next books!

ps. please i need more of felix i don’t know but something made me love him so much!
pps!! THE PLAYLIST WITH THE BOOK IS PERFECT!!

Tori and Julian haven't seen each other for 8 years and when Tori accepts a house-sitting job, neither of them can believe their eyes when they are standing face to face again.
Julian is determined to make up for his old mistakes and win her back, even if that means lying again.

"Memories of us in high school come at me. Holding her hand and cracking a stupid joke just to make her laugh. All the air leaving my lungs at the sound of giggles because she´s always been perfect at that - taking my breath away."

I love a male character who is not afraid to admit that he was an absolute ass in the past and is ready to make up for everything and listen to what she has to say. He really turned into her biggest supporter. 🥹

"Don´t waste your time thinking about all that´s wrong with the world and caring about what people say. Care about yourself."

I just want you to know
That without you it all just feels wrong

This was a sweet, fun and definitely spicy read. But I even shed a few tears here and there. I wanted to give Tori the biggest hug ever. I liked that she had started to believe in herself by the end.

I do wanna say that there were times when i thought that the main characters were acting a bit childish, but i was able to look past that. It was an enjoyable read, it's perfect if you're looking for something fast paced.

"I have finally found the missing piece I have been looking for, and it fits just right. It´s warm, and it feels like home. Home. Here. In his arms."

ARC Review!

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This book was a very quick read (read it in one sitting!) and it definitely had me turning every page waiting for more! I’m a big fan of second chance romances bc I love a good grovel 😏 I wish this book had a bit more groveling on the MMC’s part before they got back together since he was the reason they were not together anymore, and the FMC forgave him a ~little~ too quickly. But there was plenty of spice and the author did a great job of showing the MMC’s character growth from the person the FMC knew in high school. And that letter was so sweet 🥹

Tropes:

I love second-chance romance, so I was super excited for the opportunity to read and review this book and what an enjoyable and spicy read it was! The premise does require you to suspend your disbelief a bit, but nonetheless found myself rooting for Tori and Julian. I loved the Latinx rep, dual POV, the fun side characters and the music playlist included! This is book 1 in the series so I’m looking forward to whoever’s story is next!

[English isn't my first language so I apologize if I made a mistake]

Tori and Julian were a couple in high school but they broke up when he broke her heart.

Now, 8 years later, Tori has to house-sitting Ms. Sylvia house while she goes on vacation. When Tori enters the house, she checks it out a bit and gets comfortable in the jacuzzi, she hears the sound of a door and well, Julian shows up and it seems he is Ms Sykvia grandson, so in other words, they'll have to cohabitate for four whole weeks.

Let me tell you I loved Julian with all my heart, the way he wanted to apologize for everything he did to Tori, the way he took care of her, how he treated her and how he supported her🤧❤️‍🩹

Tori bb, I liked her personality and the way she was with Julian. I empathized with her a lot and I wanted so bad to give her a hug❤️‍🩹

I loved how they get to know each other for the first time now that they're older.

It's a super cute book that made me giggling and AAAA please read it!

I really liked how quick and easy was to read it. This is Khloe's debut book and obviously I'll continue reading her, in fact I'll urgently need a second book hopefully for Celeste and Felix, I want to know them like right now👀

This is the first book of Khloe’s that I’ve read, and I am not disappointed. The MC Tori is supposed to be housesitting for her neighbour, when she mistakes the house for that of her ex-boyfriend of 8 years ago. This story follows Tori and Julian on their path of the duo getting to know each other again after an awkward first encounter, years of distance, reconciliation of past wrongs, and of course a fair share of steamy moments. I appreciated that there was no major drama or third act dramatic breaking of hearts, and you can see the development of Tori’s attitude towards Julian shift. I would say this is a medium paced book that starts off a bit on the slower end, and picks up a quarter of the way through. Quick, easy, and a good read if you’re going through a slump and don’t know what to pick up next!

🏠 The House-Sitting Trap by Khloe Olivera 🏠

Key Tropes:
💜 Forced Proximity
🏠 One Bed
💜 Slow Burn
🏠 He Falls First
💜 BIPOC/Queer Reps

Characterization: Tori and Julian are high school sweethearts turned enemies turned friends turned lovers? Tori and Julian are both sympathetic and anointing in the way that you love your best friends but have to stand by and watch them make poor choices at times. They are indecisive-ish and immature, and I think that’s what makes them relatable to most people undergoing a quarter life crisis. They know kinda what they want, don’t have the full means to get there, but can rely on each, only if they trust one another. Tori talks about what it means to be a Latina woman in modern day, and shows the prejudices that she faces. Julian - white, male, privileged family - talks about expectations and how different people place value on others based on those expectations. It’s a great social commentary on the current climate.

Storyline: With a fun mix up, Tori reenters Julian’s life and it might be the second chance he’s looking for to prove himself and gain back Tori’s trust. I love me a good enemies to lovers trope, and given the history wasn’t always based on hatred, it’s angsty and filled with tension, and that’s the exact mood of reading I was looking for when I started this book. It’s a bit predictable, but alas, what romance storyline isn’t these days. I think the side characters and their eventual storylines will be where we see some fun deviation.

Writing Style: Tori’s internal and external dialogue are what make this storyline so humorous and compelling. Julian’s dialogue is what makes you do a *face palm* and laugh, at, not with, and scoff. There’s some epic dialogue between the two and I have so many favorite lines that scream “TRUTH!!” Example: “Siri, fucking decline the call.” “Accepting the call,” Siri’s voice snaps me out of my thoughts. Wait. What?! 😂😂😂

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Recommend: Yes! The side characters play a substantial role — it’s not just the two of them. The found family of support and reason really help make this a great modern day mid-twenty year old romance. It’s funny, endearing, and spicy.

🎸 The House-Sitting Trap 📝

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️

Pub date: September 8, 2023

My fave tropes:
-Second-chance romance
-High school lovers to enemies to lovers
-Only one bed
-Small town romance

Tori who happened to waked into the wrong house for her house-sitting gig (not to mention it’s his ex-high school boyfriend who took her V card and left her 8 years ago). Their lives changed dramatically after 8 years and now they practically became accidentally roommates. Julian happens to fall in love with her again needs to gain her trust after she dumped her 8 years ago.

“So what if you didn’t get a degree? It doesn’t mean everything is lost. You’re taking a different path. What wrong with a little detour on the way? Having a bit of an adventure in life?”

Julian always brings out the best in Tori. He pushed her into her full potential that she didn’t knew she had. We all love a man who believes in us and supports us. Who goes extra miles just to show how they truly believe in us.

“I want you to watch me while I fuck you with my tongue, Tori. I want you to see how good you make me when I make you come.”

It’s hot in here! Julian knows how to show his love for Tori. He’s not jut sweet with his words but also most especially in bed (hahahaha).

This book is full of Julian’s sweetness for Tori. How he able to win her back again and not to lose her this time. How they both grew in their careers but still with each other’s side. I want to admit that there are times I get sick of Julian’s sweetness and Tori’s acting childish (maybe a little bit selfish). It surely is a spicy book with more than 5 sexy scenes of Julian making love with Tori. I feel that there is A LOT MORE potential to this book that could still be explored. I actually expected the ending but still totally loved it. I may have had to add I LOVE how music is incorporated into their love story!! 🩷

Would I recommend this book? Yes. Absolutely. Given that the author’s writing is not redundant and easy to understand and read as a reader with a short attention span.

Thank you, Khloe Olivera, for sending me an ARC of this spicy, cute, and fluffy book 🩷

𝖱𝖺𝗍𝗂𝗇𝗀: ★★★★.𝟮𝟱

This book was such a pleasant surprise for me. And I must say the cover is deceiving, but what’s not to love in a cute rom-com that makes you blush several times?!

Tori’s struggles between pursuing a writing job and following her dream or finding anything that can get her out of her parent's house is something a lot of people can probably relate to. Because of that, she gets a house-sitting job to test out the waters while continuing the search for her dream job.

However, when she gets there, she finds none other than her high-school ex-boyfriend, Julian, who happens to have broken her heart in the past. The way Julian owns up to his mistakes in their past relationship and tries to do anything in his power not only to get Tori back but especially to make her see that she is way better than she gives herself credit for is so sweet. I honestly fell in love with him and his dirty mouth instantly.

This story is so funny and endearing and has amazing side characters - that I’m dying to read about in the future. The connection between Julian and Tori is undeniable, and I loved how it developed.

I do think it was a bit too long, but it didn’t feel dull and slow so I don’t think it’s a big deal, just my personal preference. However, I must say I loved a lot of the references that were there, especially the Friends one, I laughed out loud at that one.

Over the last few months, I have come to love second-chance romances, and this one is getting on my list of recommendations for this trope. It delivered exactly what I was expecting, many funny and cute moments and so much more.

This is not the typical book that I read, but I gotta say... it was an enjoyable and easy read.

Julian and Tori dated back in high school, but he messed up and broke her heart.

Eight years later, Tori is hired to take care of the house of one of her grandma's friends, but the address was sent with the wrong house number. The house is actually Julian's, and when he realizes the mistake, he doesn't correct her because he thinks it is a sign of destiny.

As soon as he sees her, he realizes that his feelings are still there, and he wants to make her forgive him for his past mistakes, and maybe give her a chance.

Tori has a physical attraction to him, but she isn't thinking about a relationship like he is.

I thought I wasn't going to like him at all because of what he did in the past, but he got my heart. He was kind, patient, caring, loving... Jesus.
He helped her in so many ways, and he supported her.

There are a few hiccups because of his lie and all of that, but there is a happy ending.

> No possessiveness or obsession, per say

- Second chance
- Forced proximity
- One bed
- Friends to lovers
- Dual POV
- He falls first

Tori accepts a house-sitting gig with the hopes of having some alone time and getting her life together. Unfortunately, she ends up walking into the wrong house. Which, in the grand scheme of things, is owned by her ex-boyfriend from High School... and he broke her heart. Julian is desperate for a second chance so he plays along, telling her that they're both stuck house sitting together for his 'grandmother'. A lot has changed for them in the past 8 years, could the sparks still be there? It's only for a month, what could go wrong?
This book was entertaining and heartwarming! I generally dislike second chance romance books but this was done exceptionally well. I found it hard to believe that it was a debut novel as it was very well constructed. I really enjoyed their bickering and loved how they cared for each other. The tension and chemistry was amazing and the spice proved it. Though, sometimes I found Tori to be a little childish and Julian was TOO sweet at times and it felt unrealistic.
Overall, I would highly recommend reading this book if you enjoy forced proximity, one bed trope, second chance romance and love-to-hate-to-love. It is sure to give you all the feels!

Out on 8th September.

A cute, fun and light-hearted debut. 3.5 stars rounded up.

This novel follows Tori and Julian’s second chance after he broke her heart in high school. Julian gets his chance to set things right when Tori mistakes his place for her house-sitting gig.

We love to see a mastermind at work. This boy is obsessed and wants nothing more than to gain back her trust and love.

This plot really intrigued me when I saw early content and teasers. The result is an easy, fun and accessible read but you do have to suspend your disbelief a little which is something the author states in the beginning, so keep that in mind.

With that being said, I wanted just a little more from the characters. The characters’ actions and dialogue read younger than what the author described and I couldn’t fully connect on an emotional level to heart-to-heart conversations.

I am interested to see what the author does next.

Read if you like:
- second chance

I had high hopes for this book a cute guitarist and a song writer trope? Sign me right up!

I picked up this book because I am a huge sucker for guitarist style romances. although the book let me down a lot. First of all, I love second chance and forced proximity trope I’ll eat it up.

Second, I adore Tori’s character she’s a strong powerful female character who is struggling with her insecurities but is overcoming them throughout the book. The love interest Julian was a bland staple character who didn’t really have much of a personality except that he was good at sex and a cute guitarist. There were times in the novel that Julian showed his kindness through actions but overall it wasn’t enough.

Tori and Julian’s chemistry was suttle and I loved the singing parts they had together. The times they sung together had more chemistry then the spicy scenes.

Julian should’ve had a better character development and more personality. Nothing wrong with Tori. Also BLUEBALLS DOES NOT EXIST. I almost did not finish the book bc of the mention of it but Tori kept me through.

Overall, it was meh and it was cute. Definitely did not met the expectations though

arc review

thanks to Khloe Olivera for arc i’m sooo happy for this opportunity ♡

i got a pleasant impression of the story of Tori and Julian in this book there are all my favorite tropes. i enjoyed watching their relationship, i laughed, rejoiced and cried with them. what they have created together is so magical i am in full love.

Tori is my sunniest and strongest girl who has gone through such a difficult path. it was interesting for me to watch her as she reveals herself with each chapter. Julian’s development and how he tried to fix everything in relation to Tori, his care and support deserves everything >>>>>>>

fav notes

let me help you with that, he says. let me be there to pick you up when you fall. can you let that little voice in your head that’s setting you up for failure go for once and do that? jump, baby girl. i’ll catch you. i promise.
