Adventures with ravenous witches, fantastical creatures and extraordinary animals, Backyard Beasts & Curious Capers by The Ten Penners brings the magic of the outdoors in with a potent cast of quirky characters in this enchanting collection of short stories. A magical anthology brimming with spellbinding fun; ensnaring the senses with intrigue, wonder and humour for young, intrepid readers to explore.
This culmination of wonderful stories is perfect for readers in the middle to upper primary grades, who can devour the whole lot at once or sneak in a tale or two under the sheets at bedtime. Imaginative, engaging and fun!

Ten Penners, twenty stories! Always imaginative and highly readable, this Gold Coast group have excelled with their newest anthology Backyard Beasts and Curious Capers which contains fantasy and fun, cool characters, kooky critters and silly stuff which appealed to me. From humorous and enlightening adventures involving broomstick riding, crystal balls, a backyard concert, and magic mirror to intrepid Pixie P.I. Dandelia Oakleaf. Prepare for frogs, friendships and a fright night sleepover. Apologies if I’ve left out your favourite. There’s much more including a kind tree, a brave cat, a wakeboarding octopus, and an old fairytale reimagined. Ideal for 8-12 year old readers and group reading; the length of these stories would also suit reading before bedtime, or reading in your favourite tree. Just don't laugh too hard!

This is an eye-catching book from the cover to the titles. I love the various characters and the variety of magical scenes in the stories.

Who couldn't fall in love with a quirky witch who flies with her Poo Boom cat on the back of her broom with a kink in the handle?

The Pixie Hollow Heroes, are two boys who find more excitement than they can handle when they fall into a mirror and drop into another realm.

The stray was a talking dog with attitude. The Fart Fairy had me giggling. There were concerts in the backyard and a cute cat called Sunshine who saved the day.

Tabitha finds a treasure in a box full of junk. Jeremy Albatros builds a rocket with recycled op shop junk. The Quoggle is a firm friend.

The handsome but lonely woodcutter, has his heart melt with love, for a baby he finds in the woods.

Theo the orange octopus wants to wake board and he gets his wish!

Dougie dreams of being a soccer star even though he thinks he can't.

There's a Fright Night, Trees alive in the backyard, and much more.

This is a terrific book for young children to read themselves, or for parents to read to them.
