What appeared to be the chance of a lifetime for Abby Brennan to sample the heritage of her deceased parents would become a magical and unbelievable journey into another world and secrets long kept from her. The Irish castle she was invited to visit was a dream come true, from the hot guy who picked her up from the airport to the opportunity to make her history thesis even better! Little did she know, she could be the key to protecting the castle and humanity from the evil that threatens to break the wards protecting it and she would have to bond with four handsome guardians to do so. Tough job, but someone has to do it...

Kate Gellar’s MAGIC DESTINY teases at what is to come as this slow burn reverse harem fantasy hits the ground running with a fabulous cast of characters and a solid foundation for a new series! Ms. Gellar has done a remarkable job of setting the stage, blending the right amount of sass, serious and sexy!

Abby is anything but promiscuous, so it is amusing to see her reactions to the gorgeous immortal males, but how will she react when she discovers their real intentions? Trust me, this one is a keeper for sure and I cannot wait for book two!

I DNF'd this one at 25%. There just wasn't anything that really grabbed my attention. The story was very typical, with the set-up of a girl who doesn't know her heritage and then she meets four hot guys, who are all super hot and fall in some common types you see in reverse harem books. It just didn't grab my attention, nothing really stood out to me and made me curious. The build-up to her magic wasn't really interesting and form the guys point of view you already know what's going on. Maybe it's my current reading mood and maybe it gets better once the story starts, but I just wasn't invested enough to continue.

First...full disclosure of two things. One, I received an ARC from the author so that I could write this review but otherwise have no connection other than being a fan of some of her SciFi work.. Two, I typically don’t read modern fantasy/romance which, these days, seems to have replaced the straight romance novel. My fantasy tastes run along the lines of Kushiel’s Dart or Crown of Thorns. That being said, off we go with a review for Kate Gellar’s first book in her Iron Rogue series Magic’s Destiny.

Initially we are introduced to Abby Brennan, her friend Wendy and her cousin, Paul Quinn. An establishment of the three characters and their relationship that later in the book becomes a bit confusing. Abby is off to Ireland (hence Irish Rogue) to study Irish history for her thesis and serve as a house worker around the castle where she will be staying. And that’s about all of the synopsis you’ll get from me because I dislike reviews that are ¾ synopsis and ¼ review.

From the very beginning the author shows no shyness about the sexual aspects and relationships of the characters. Her sexual scenes are descriptively erotic without passing over into the realm of pure erotica because the story line is well established.

The castle, protected by four guardians, needs a queen to bond them all together. And clearly that queen was Abby, although this is only the first book of the series and there may be more surprises. The guardians, Sam, Liam, Brendan and Murphy, I have divided into 3 groups. Sam is the obvious leader and the first to encounter Abby as he picks her up from the airport. He immediately senses something unusual about her. Murphy is the outsider. I hate to say outsider but he was somewhat forced to become a member of the guardians by his family and the whole process is decidedly against his character. The flaw for me in Murphy’s character is that he is TOO withdrawn although the author tries to make it clear that he really has become a part of the group although begrudgingly. He is far too standoffish and, as a result, he never really develops past his stereotypical bad boy image. Again, first book and the author may have plans for him later. The third group I lump in Brendan and Liam. To me, those two are interchangeable with not enough separating them to make them different. It could just as easily been Liam that had the climatic experience with Abby as it was Brendan. They both felt overwhelming power from her.

There are 10 women that have been invited to castle, ostensibly to study Irish history. Of those, only Astrid, Emma, Noomi and Sylvie hold any interest. Astrid and Emma immediately take on the role of typical female antagonists vying for the attention of Liam and Brendan even to the point where Emma warns Abby off the two boys in a serious manner. The roles of these two girls becomes more important when a secret is revealed about one of them. That secret is revealed in a well placed bit of foreshadowing which I only discovered in retrospect. The other two girls, Noomi and Sylvie have their own secrets. Noomi reveals hers to Sam early, making it clear that she knows what is really going on with the invitation of the 10 women. Sam seems to take this information in stride when he discovers it.

Sylvie is a grump and befriends Abby early on, although it is a bit difficult to see why Abby would have anything to do with her aside from the fact that they both have similar feelings about the power of the house and of the ‘hot’ men.

It’s clear that Abby is pretty timid, notwithstanding the recent death of her mother with whom she was very close. Through the story, she becomes more and more isolated from the rest of the girls. She is shy in the shower, eats by herself or, occasionally with Sylvie, and actively tries to isolate herself from the rest of the girls. There is a good character change when her powers are really revealed which I like about her and think was well done by the author. We discover that Abby, quel surpise!, is obviously the one that the men are looking for to become the bonded queen although she seems somewhat more of a succubus than a queen. I’m still unsure, as are the guardians, of what/who she really is but that is clearly intentional on the part of the author.

The confusing relationship I mentioned earlier between Paul, Wendy and Abby is confusing because it takes an abrupt change after she arrives at Drumm Castle. There are texts that go back and forth between the three of them. Paul is staying in Abby’s mother’s house and she also allowed Wendy to stay there a while as well. There was some chemistry, apparently, between Paul and Wendy which never went anywhere. Something happens back in the States that puts the three of them in a weird confusing triangle. I only mention it here because I suspect the author is setting something up for the other books in the series. Apparently Paul had a lot to do with Abby going to Ireland but that would be giving a bit away.

The baby climax (pun intended) comes about ¾ of the way through the book with the exposure of Abby to the demonic powers of the castle and the rescue of her by Brendan. Abby’s power exposes itself to a large extent during the sexual experience she has with Brendan. Throughout the book, it is clear how the queen is to bond with the guardians and we begin to see this with the episode of Brendan and Abby after he rescues her. Later, after Brendan tells Sam about what happens he almost seems disappointed that he wasn’t the first, but is actually pleased that it happened. I don’t think his brief disappointment was necessary. Murphy, as standoffish as usual still doesn’t trust the truth in what Brendan is saying and Liam is beside himself with joy at the thought of Abby being the bonding queen.

A Friday night dinner party is thrown to secretly expose who is a witch and who is mortal. It ends with a nice twist which leads to the real climax. This occurs when the secret of one of the antagonistic girls is revealed and Brendan’s life is severely threatened. Since he is a crucial character to the book (although crucial characters have been killed off in the past...hello, Ned) he will clearly not be allowed to pass and the obvious heroine comes to his rescue.

Overall, the book was a pleasant and quick read without too much overhead like some of the other fantasy novels I have read (both of the previously mentioned series are full of political intrigue to say the least.) To me, this is more romance than fantasy although it is the fantasy aspect that glues the whole thing together. I will continue the series and I suggest, if you enjoy these types of fantasy/romance novels, you continue it as well.

Good story

I love the story, it has huge potential. The writing and editing are great but the book lacked umph for me. I felt like I kept waiting for something to happen. I plan to read book two to see where the story leads but I hope it has more to it.

It definitely had a different plot and that was refreshing but what I wanted to see more of was the magic. I think it was a lot of building up of suspense with no delivery. However, it’s the first book so hopefully more will come because my anticipation is there for it.

This book is the first paranormal romance written by Eliza Green, under the nom de plume Kate Gellar.

I LOVE Eliza’s books and writing style and Magic Destiny didn’t disappoint. The story line is intriguing, thought out, and has a solidly developed plot and characters.
I only had one dilemma though, I didn’t want the book to end!
I love how the paranormal, folk lore and romance is so intertwined that it felt natural and real, not like a lot of overdone paranormal romances out there.

I highly recommend reading this book and be transported to the magical land that is Ireland.

My usual genres are sci-fi and fantasy and this is my first try at paranormal. Kate Gellar did not disappoint. Loved the character development. I could not put it down and read this book in one sitting. Can't wait for the continuation of the series.

I received this advance copy from the author and this is my honest opinion.

Interesting Plot

**** Spoilerish ****

I had trouble rating this book. If half stars were available this read was more of a 3.5 for me. The story was interesting as was the setting. There were few typos. What bothered me though was mainly the characters. Abby, the FMC, was hard to get a read on. At first she came off as an introverted loner but there were times when she just seemed rude, not that introverted loners aren't ever rude but it felt odd and it took her from likeable to not at times, for me. The guys were worse. They ran so hot and cold. The worst was Brendan. I love a little bit of mean girl action because it is so satisfying when the heroine gets the guy(s) but it is the opposite if the guy makes the heroine feel like crud by flirting with others in front of her. There were reasons he needed to keep his distance at one point in the story but he didn't have to treat her the way he did. Then all of them, especially Sam and Murphy were awful to her at the end. There were reasons for both but it sure as heck didn't make me root for them. Instead,I just wanted Abby to tell the guys to go "f" themselves and leave. I just don't like how there wasn't anyone in her corner. By the time I finished reading I just felt sad and a bit angry. Anyway, the negatives were almost all personal preference and subjective issues. I think that many would be entertained by this novel and wouldn't share my opinions regarding the characters.

Abby Brennan May think she’s come to Ireland just for a taste of family heritage but things develop a wee bit more ... as in the gotta stop demons from destroying humanity type of “more”. At least there are immmortal guardians to help bear the burden and, ummm, yes, umm, quite yummy ones at that. All this plus sizzling encounters, intriguing twists and turns, and more than enough excitement turn Kate Gellar’s Magic Destiny: Paranormal Romance (Irish Rogue Series Book 1) into a pretty darn great read, if you ask me (and since you’re reading this review that kinda means you are) - and yet again, can’t forget those yummies (Sam, Brendan, Liam, and Murphy by name). Yes indeedy, quite s fun book it is, it is - and yes, it’s beautifully written and with a powerfully good plot, too. Really, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

MIGIC DESTINY
The Irish Rogue Series, Book One

KATE GELLAR

Review by Author Roy Murry

Looking at the Amazon reviews, I seem to be the only guy to read about Abby's adventure in Ireland. I picked out the book to read because of the "Irish Rogue Series." I am part Irish.

Then I started to read and thought I was getting into an erotic novel with the talk of bonding. Surprise, the novel is about witches and the keeping "A Seal" closed, locking in evil spirits into the underworld.

Four men, guardians, evaluate ten women who have witches’ linage to find a queen. All four men are to bond with the queen to save the Irish world.

Abby has no idea what is happening. The world has changed for her in an adventure that turns her life upside down.

This beginning may or may not save the day until the bonding is complete. Maybe in book two of the series - an excellent writing hook by the author.

I would have liked a little more background story. However, I enjoyed Abby's play with the guardians.

The prose was first-rate, and the main characters are well-defined, leading into book two, which I will not read because one bonding is enough for me.

However, this read is a good one standing on its own.

Abby Brennan recently lost her mother when she is offered a place in a summer history program in Ireland. Since she is the descended from first generation Irish immigrants, she decides it will be the perfect opportunity to learn more about her Irish roots. Abby will quickly realize that there is something strange about Drumm castle. Sam, Brendan, Liam, and Murphy, are the guardians of the castle and are hoping that one of the young women staying at the castle for the next few weeks will be the one to complete their group. If one of these women is the right one, they will be able to repair the seal under the castle and keep the demons fighting to enter the world in their own dimension permanently.

Wonderfully well written, and fascinating, characters in a story that reveals the existence of magic to an unsuspecting young woman, and possible makes her a part of a team that protects the world from evil. Great book, I look forward to reading more of this series.

I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. I wasn't too sure what to expect when I started reading this book...but hook line and sinker. We meet Abby Brennan, who buried her mother 2 months prior after developing a rare illness that baffled drs. She is on her way to Ireland after rcving an email for a full ride to spend the summer in Ireland....a full advantage to work on her coursework on Irish ways. When she finally arrives she is met by one of the most handsome men shes ever seen...and arrogant too. When they pass into the castle grounds she feels a strange sensation. Sam, is one of the Guardians of the castle that is charged to protect the world from demons, along with Brendan, Murphy and Liam. They need to find the Queen to seal the gates closed and Sam thinks Abby is it...but there is more than meets the eye. A tale of secrets, lies, deception and decisions. Can one believe what they sense or is it just the trick of the Irish?

Abigail Brennan lives in Brooklyn. Her parents are dead; her mother only two months prior. Both parents were first generation in the U.S. from Ireland.
Abby is invited to a summer history program set in a castle in Ireland - County Clare. Strange energies and things happen from the time she arrives in the castle. There are 10 women there for the program and 4 hot men running the summer program.
Abby doesn't believe in magic when she arrives but things happen to make her change her mind. She has a heritage she doesn't know about.
The guys - Sam, Liam, Brendan and Murphy are looking for a queen to help them close the seal that keeps leaking demonic energies onto their plane of existence.
Is Abby who they are looking for?
Abby bonds with Brendan in this book. (bonding meaning sex)
The story has much going for it.

2.75 of 5 stars. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

It didn’t feel very well thought out, like there was this other world, but it wasn’t explained enough for me to really grasp it. Perhaps someone who knew more about Irish folklore would really click with this book easily. I still read the book to the end, which is why I gave it as many stars as I did. I liked Abby, and her friend Wendy. They seemed like genuine friends and had a good backstory and interactions so it didn’t feel forced to me as the reader. When Abby went to Ireland there were so many new characters it was really hard to keep track of them all and get to know them, and the ending was very abrupt. Sometimes a book just doesn’t click with me, this was one of those times.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for this honest review.

I didn't want to put down this book when I started reading it. There are parts of this book that are repetitive and can be annoying. This book does end on a cliffhanger. I love how the book is based in Ireland. There are a lot more questions by the end of this book that I hope all will be answered with the next two books. There is magic and demons in this book. There is also a RH going on but I'm pretty sure the description tells you that. I have already downloaded the next book as I need to know what happens next.

Not Enough World Building

I wanted to enjoy this series, but at the end of the first book I’m left with not knowing whether I should continue. It has a great premise. Yet I feel so much time is spent saying the best friend and the cousin should be together that it feels so forced. Especially since they’re not major characters in the book. The Guardians are interesting, but one dimensional. The seal? Intriguing but no idea why it’s there or how they got roped in. Also, if someone were truly immortal it means they’re immortal - unless you’re Highlander and then you sever the head to take their power, but I digress. Still. It all feels pretty “meh.” Doubt I’ll continue.

I read this book in a few hours because I could not put it down. I thought it was well-written and a great book. The ending still leaves so many unanswered questions, but it is a part of a series. I can't wait to read the 2nd book in the series. I want to know if Abby is the queen or if she is evil. And if she is the queen will all the boys accept her? And will she be able to control her powers? Looking forward to finding out what happens next. I received the book for free with the option to leave an honest review.

To be honest it took me a while to get into this book but by the end I was looking for more! About a young woman whos mother recently died and she is reeling from the loss and is feeling all alone. She accepts an invitation to visit an Irish castle and get to learn about Irish history while working at an Irish castle. It turns out they the guardians of a seal beneath the castle are looking for a certain person to help them keep the seal closed against the evil that lies beneath and this person must be able to help them to maintain the seal! I loved the foundation of the plot for these books. There’s a lot of Highlander style books (which don’t get me wrong as a Scots myself I highly appreciate them), but there’s not too many books where authors try to embrace Scottish or Irish folklore or the “magical” side of their cultures and histories. Not that this story was really based on any actual Irish folklore, but the occult roots were a great storyline to touch on. I wish our Abby Brennan had more confidence in her actions, she’s a little too filled with doubt for my liking personally, but I have faith she’ll come around. The boys are all dreamy though 😍.

This is a very intriguing read with some interesting twists. The plot is unique and is different than most; you get a mysterious, magic and folklore involved story. This might be slow burn in the RH aspect, but there are still a few heated scenes. As the first book in the series, I had more questions after reading this book than answers. I had a fun time reading this book and am looking forward to reading more of this series.

Not My Usual Read- but great fun.
Now, I have to be honest this was not my usual read but recommended to me by a friend who said I ought to try this genre.
The characters and setting were well drawn, very well paced as it whizzes along and it had you guessing as to who the ‘baddy’ was until the last minute-I shall say no more. Very entertaining.

This is the first proper romance novel I have read before and boy did it get my pulse going! I have never felt how I did reading this book; I'm not an overly sexual person but this got me feeling something.
Some of the sentences didn't seem to make much sense (could have just been me though) and felt like some mistakes were missed in editing.
I myself come from Irish decent and so it's great to read a book thats set in Ireland.
Overall however, it's a good book and I'm invested in the story of Abby Brennan.

I found this book slow and not for me

The story Line was interesting, however, does there need to be mating? The characters were bland. I never felt a connection to anyone. Since I don't feel a connection I won't miss the rest of the books either.
