Sometimes you just need to bang it out...

Shy paleontologist Thea Pope just wants to get through her sister's '80s-themed monstrosity of a TV reality-show wedding so she can get to her summer field work. The only problem? Her sister has turned into the ultimate bridezilla - as in pink parasols, organza hats, forcing people to shave and dye their hair levels of over-the-top, it's-my-day antics - all while on location in a place literally called hell that reeks of sulfur and lost hopes.

The only thing that can make it worse is when her sister declares that she never even wanted Thea in the wedding at all but that the producers insisted. Ouch doesn't begin to express how much it hurts that her own sister didn't even want her to be at her wedding.

There's only one thing Thea can do after her sister finally pushes her too far - she picks the one man at the wedding her sister cannot stand - the groom's brother, Kade St. James - and has sex with him.

Is it petty revenge that she'll be rubbing in her sister's face from now until eternity? Absolutely. Still, it seems like a great idea at the time, and really what could go wrong?

Pretty much everything it turns out.

Let’s make a list of everyone who sucked and was rude as fuck shall we:

- The sister (aka the bridezilla)
- The brides mother
- The bridesmaids
- The grooms mother
- The grooms dad (who isn’t even alive btw, but he’s still shitty)
- The groom (not rude but I’ll add him to the list anyways since he doesn’t say anything about his future wife’s shit behavior)

The FMC was fine but a doormat to her whole family. It’s an issue she’s aware of though and trying to overcome with therapy. Yay for healthy steps! ✨

The MMC was fine too, until the ending conflict. He said some crappy things and I am still waiting for the apology from him…..still waiting….. still waiting…..

The premise sounded fun and there were some funny moments, but overall I don’t care if her sister is an actress and putting on a show for the cameras…that doesn’t give her an excuse to act degrading towards the fmc. I felt so bad some of the things that were said to her. 🥺

It's time to stop when I ask two fundamental questions over and over:
1) do I care about these characters
2) do I care about this plot.

Both no? Kick it into the sun.

Hot and sexy. Unpacking a lot of stuff in this one!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This author is notorious for telling it like it is and unashamedly allows her characters to experience life. YAY
The characters are varied and multi-layered. At some points, they are ridiculous and have bridezilla breakdowns. At other points, they are doing a throwback 80’s nightmare wedding for likes and views. They unpack a lot of stuff!
Some of the characters, such as our main characters, enjoy what they lovingly call anger bangs. Hot and heavy connections tend to backfire on them.
Flynn lets her imagination go with the story, and while it’s not heavy and deep, I found it to be a great diversion read. Sometimes we need that in our lives!
Anger Bang is a funny, wild story about a farce of a wedding, ditching your crazy siblings and family, and standing up for yourself. Was it a perfect story? No, but I think it is meant to be a light-hearted, steamy story about having fun and finding love when you stop looking, despite it all!!
Anger Bang is the second book I’ve read by Avery Flynn. Her writing style does not disappoint!
In this laugh-out-loud romcom, child star and paleontologist Thea Pope must return home to be the maid of honor in her sister’s wedding. It’s not your typical wedding either. It’s an 80’s themed reality show wedding. Quiet, shy Thea is constantly pushed out of her comfort zone. On one occasion, she meets the man of honor, Kade, who she immediately deems her “fictional catnip”.
This is an unputdownable romcom that’s told through two perspectives. This book had me howling in laughter and indulging in every steamy moment shared between Thea and Kade.
I can’t wait for the next book in this standalone series!
Thank you Valentine PR, Entangled Publishing, and Avery Flynn for a copy of Anger Bang. I thoroughly enjoyed the read along hosted by Entangled Publishing.
I laughed so much the whole time I was reading this one. What I loved the most was the banter. I really don't think anyone else can write like Flynn. This was a must read for me just for the banter and the laugh out loud moments.
This book wasn't what I thought I was going to read. It was SO. MUCH. BETTER!
I was positively surprised by the perfect banter, the humour, the perfectly drawned characters... I laughed so much, I cried, I snorted so often, I grew attached to Thea and Kade (and, yes, to Jackie too). I loved the self-improvement dimension of the story, how Thea decide to take her fate in her hands, to go waaaay outside of her comfort zone, and it pays off great! And the spice. I didn't know there was spice in that book and I don't ever want to go back now.
If you like your books with spice, lot of self-derision (80's themed wedding anyone?), great humor, but with a touch of personal growth on the side.... This one is PERFECT for you.
Avery Flynn is a new-to-me author. I'm now curious to see if her other books are as great as this one.
Please note that I received a complimentary e-copy of the book through NetGalley as part as a TLC book tour. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
How is this my first book by Avery Flynn? I will be digging heavily into her backlist. This book was an absolute delight friends. I started it on Sunday night and woke up to finish it on Monday morning. I was all in!
The plot, the characters, the steam - so, so good! Thea Pope is a shy paleontologist just trying to make it through her sister’s attention seeking reality TV wedding. Never one to make waves, Thea is the family pushover. But can she be pushed too far when she finds out that her sister never even wanted her at the wedding? In an uncharacteristic fit of rage and need for revenge, Thea confronts the best man and groom’s brother, Kade St. James, who her sister hates and propositions him for an anger bang.
What this unlikely pair can’t know is just how well suited they are for each other - both in and out of bed. Their chemistry sizzled! The emotions they brought out in each other made my heart melt. I was rooting for them so hard.
I loved how the plot explored alcoholism and its long lasting affects on children and families. Avery did not shy away from family trauma, sibling relationships, strained mother-child bonds, emotional struggles and the need for therapy. Yet, things never felt too heavy. It was just the right mix to make things emotional amidst all the reality tv and 80s themes craziness. If you are an 80s kid, like me, you won’t be able to stop laughing at the cabbage patch kid hairstyle challenge (that yarn hair y’all!), the heavily teased and hairsprayed hairstyles, the bright colors, the flounce, the men in short shorts. It was hilarious, nostalgia filled fabulousness!
not for me. i was really excited about this book since i’m a paleontologist but i just found myself feeling frustrated that it was feeding into the stereotype that women in paleontology/stem in general are geeky or dorky. some of the most badass women i know are paleontologists and this was a missed opportunity to highlight that imo. and in general i just found a lot of the jokes cringey. the science was mostly accurate and it was cool to read about a place i’ve actually done paleo work at. i just wanted a lot more from this book
I loved that it opens with the FMC in therapy 🖤
Short Review:
This book begins with the main character in a therapy session. Therapy was a big theme in this book and I loved it. The ultimate takeaway from this book is that we never really know how someone else feels unless we ask and talk about it. I actually had a wonderful time reading this book! I can’t wait to read the next one.
Longer Review:
When I first started this book I really couldn’t have imagined I would love it as much as I did. Thea and Kade were both awkward. In the best way. Thea is a dinosaur nerd and Kade is a True Crime writer. Both of their inner monologues were fun. I thought their relationship and the progression of it was great. I loved that they saw through each other almost immediately.
I was annoyed about Dex forcing Kade to speak to his mother. I’m a firm believer that not everyone deserves a second chance. I still don’t think Dex handled the situation ideally but the way their mother treated the situation made me forgive it all. It was a really nice plot line to me. All three of them had a lot of feelings about what happened but had never discussed it. None of them understood the trauma of each other because of that. I honestly really liked all of it.
Sometimes people don’t like the miscommunication trope and I completely understand not liking it in certain books. This book though gives a good example of how miscommunication is actually an accurate thing that happens in real life. We all fall victim to only thinking of ourselves and not truly understanding or seeing someone else’s viewpoint. Especially when we are hurt. So miscommunication sucks but it’s a real life issue. I appreciated this book showing a more accurate version of that. Plus all the healthy therapy talk was great!
I did feel like a lot of the characters in this book were kind of terrible lol. You learn more about them and you understand them more buuuut they still did and said terrible things. I get it but that doesn’t absolve them from being rude for no reason.
I really enjoyed this book though! I’m excited to read the next one 🖤
Leave it to Avery Flynn to tackle reality TV and give us a good laugh while doing it. Anger Bang is exactly what the title says it is. An Anger Bang. But, can it turn into something more? Miscommunications, trust issues, lots of drama all mixed in with some crazy outfits makes for an enjoyable read from Avery Flynn.
From pink taffeta to side pony-tails, you can’t help but laugh at what we all probably looked like. But, was there really a need for all the snark towards Thea? Oh, yea, barbies need to pick on the poor shy paleontologist. Insecure much? But, there was one person who saw beneath the shyness to the wonderful, dynamic person she really was. Well, that’s after she approached him for an Anger Bang.
Kade had his own issues with this farce of a wedding. His brother was his best friend and confidant. But he still couldn’t understand why he would go through with something like this. Why he would put up with bridezilla. Why he would marry a woman as cold and mean as Jackie. Is the movie deal worth all this fuss? Then, he goes and does the one thing that totally turns his world upside down. The only highlight in his days and nights now is Thea. Except he doesn’t know what to do with what he’s feeling and can’t understand why she’s always on his mind.
Yes, there is a bit of drama and both characters have their own issues. But, they seem to have learned how to deal with them. Thea finally stands up for herself and Kade tries to let go of the past. Truths are told and love is found. Avery Flynn has a habit of writing quirky characters and getting us to understand them. Both Thea and Kade had their quirks and they shone through throughout the story.
I normally absolutely love and adore anything written by Avery but, I did have some moments with this story. At times it seemed choppy and in-cohesive. Other times it just flowed. But, I loved the ending and how Thea and Kade wove their lives together.
Anger Bang by Avery Flynn 🦖
This was my first book by Avery and I really enjoyed it! I was expecting a fun and spicy romance from the cover and description and it delivered! Thea is a shy paleontologist who is a bridesmaid in her sister's reality tv style, 80s themed wedding that is being live broadcasted. Her sister has turned into the ultimate bridezilla and Thea finds out that she was only in the wedding because the producers made her sister ask her. So Thea decides that the best thing to do is to is pick the one man at the wedding her sister can't stand, the groom's brother Kade, and anger bang him. What could go wrong with that?
This was just so much fun. There were times when it was a little bit ridiculous and silly, but in the best way. There's a bunch of banter between Thea and Kade and they had amazing chemistry. I loved how Thea was the nerdy, kind of shy sister but she is still shown to be strong and unafraid to do what she wants. (Because being nerdy and shy does not make you weak!)
This was told in the third person, which I don't usually love as it can sometimes take me out of being in the characters heads, but I really enjoyed it here! The entire book takes place over around a week, however it's not insta love in my opinion. Thea and Kade have physical chemistry pretty much immediately and then they get to know each other more through the silliness of the wedding festivities building up their emotional connection. Thea and Kade are bit of opposites with Thea being the quiet, keep to herself, focused on her job woman and Kade being the no commitments, bit more outgoing guy.
Overall a fun and spicy romance that also balances it out with some more serious topics without being too heavy. I'll definitely be checking out more of Avery's books in the future!
Only giving it a two because I wanted to give it a one and decided that maybe it wasn’t the books fault. This was way spicier than I expected (my fault…it’s called Anger Bang ffs) and was sooooo awkward to listen to on audio.
That being said, the narrators (especially the guy) were awful, there was no character development whatsoever, and the whole plot was dumb. I almost DNF’d like 45 minutes in but decided to try…woof. Bad call
What is the hottest pepper?! Because that is the level of steam and spice in Anger Bang! This book also has a whole lot of heart! Thea and Kade are in Wyoming for the wedding of their siblings; a week of wedding activities which, by the way, is being filmed for reality tv! When Thea asks Kade if wants to anger bang as a way to get back at her bridezilla sister, they agree to a no-strings attached, no-kissing fling out of view of cameras. The love scenes were hot, but it was when the walls protecting their bruised hearts came down that I got all tingly. I truly cared about these two as a couple, and I cared for them individually as they worked through their pain, their insecurities, their anger, and their love.
I devoured this book. It was fun, flirty, and very steamy. The characters were absolute delights, the reality-TV wedding drama was entertaining, and I give it all the stars. It was just what I needed.
Thea is incredibly shy and is just hoping to make it through her influencer sister's '80s-themed reality TV show wedding so she can get back to her paleontology work. Her sister has turned into an absolute bridezilla though and won't let Thea just fade into the background.
Things turn nasty between the sisters, so to get her revenge Thea picks a guy her sister can't stand and decides to use him for a good old-fashioned anger bang. It turns out that Kade St. James is good for more than just hot s.e.x and the two start spending more and more time together. Could they be in danger of catching real feelings?!
This book had some cute and funny moments but it left me wanting more. The characters were a little too one dimensional and I wish the plot had more going on except a superficial wedding.
Thea is cute and loves her dinosaurs. She's in therapy and working on standing up for herself. Kade is dealing with his abandonment issues and his brothers sham of a wedding when he meets Thea, the brides sister. Sparks fly between these two and the agree to an anger bang, to piss off Theas sister since she hates Kade. One thing leads to another and they spend the entire weekend seeking out each other whenever they can.
First off, I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this latest from Avery Flynn ever since I got a look at that fantastic cover! I'm happy to report the book itself was equally fun, quirky and ultra SPICY!
Shy, paleontologist and ex-child actress, Thea is forced to return to the world of cameras and television when her d-list actress sister chooses to throw an over the top reality tv 80s themed wedding in the middle of rural USA. The upside, it happens to be in the town where a new dinosaur fossil has been found and Thea is able to talk herself onto the dig once she's done with the wedding.
What Thea doesn't count on is getting herself in a no-strings attached affair with the groom's brother Kade in an attempt to make her sister mad. Thriller writer Kade is happy to comply but has no interest in anything serious, until he starts falling for Thea's charms.
Zany with TONS of family drama, this book is the HOT romcom with emotional depth I didn't know I needed and I can't wait to see what's next in this new series! Recommended for fans of Erin Mallon's Flirtasaurus or Nellie Wilson's Curated.
Being your mom’s disappointment because you’re a palaeontologist and not a famous actress - fine.
Said wedding being a themed wedding: 80’s - fine!
This was an hilarious ride, full of family drama, over the top 80’s outfits, dinosaur and true crime factoids, mommy issues and super rage induced sexy times!
A full on rom-com that kept me glued to the pages, experiencing every emotion known to man. I laughed, I experienced second hand embarrassment (a LOT), i raged, i cried, i felt so much for every single character and then laughed again at all the ridiculousness of a televised week look 80’s themed destination wedding in Hell!
Thea has my entire heart, it was so easy to relate to her, the shy mom-disappointment geeky palaeontologist amongst tv stars.
And I can’t say I didn’t relate to Kade too. His demeanour of ill-shove-feelings-so-deep-they’ll-never-see-the-light-of-day defence mechanism made me want to hug his grumpy ass.
But like any good rom-com that makes you feel all the feelings (lots of angst), there's an HEA at the end of the day (read week) and all that hair spray and neon colours are worth it!
Thea is a dinosaur loving paleontologist who is dragged into her sister's reality show wedding. She doesn't want anything to do with the even even before her sister tells her she didn't even want Thea in the wedding. The only way Thea sees to get revenge is to anger bang the best man, the groom's brother her sister hates. But what starts out as just some benefits, turns into something more.
I adored this book! It had so many thing that I loved.
The humor: the book had me cracking up early and I didn't stop the entire time. The narration was snarky and smart. I liked the banter between the characters. And all of the dinosaur jokes had me dying.
Thea and Kade: These two are who romcoms are made for. Their chemistry was amazing. I wanted to see them get together the second they met. Usually books where the character don't talk out their feelings will annoy me, but I completely understood where these two were coming from. It was fun to see them fall for each other.
The spice: It kicks in nice and early (under 20%) and doesn't disappoint the rest of the time. Thea and Kade's sexual chemistry is so strong that you want to see them together all of the time.
The family drama: this book wasn't just about the couple. It also delved into some heavy family topics that were well placed and written.
This book is a must for spicy romcom lovers!!!!
ANGERBANG 🦖 💥
Thank you Valentine PR for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What, exactly, is an anger bang you may be wondering.
In Thea’s situation it means banging the groom’s brother at her sister’s wedding just to piss her off. The guy that her sister explicitly forbade any bridesmaids from banging. Her sister who just told her she wouldn’t have asked Thea to be a bridesmaid if the production on her reality tv show hadn’t forced her. So there’s a lot of frustration to get out and the hot willing brother is the just the perfect answer. There you have it, an anger bang.
This was a fun easy read. Lots of sexy times that started pretty early in the book. No slow burn here. There was family drama. There were some quirky bits - The wedding was 80s themed. Thea is a paleontologist who geeks out over dinosaurs.
Overall, I enjoyed it as a quick read.
I received an ARC of this book. All views are my own.
This book is so much fun! I loved Kade and Thea, and their growing relationship. Avery's stories are full of heat and banter and fun - and this one made me laugh so much. I really love Avery's humor in her books. Her characters are so real and vividly written.
Thea has to be in her TV star sister's wedding, but she knows she isn't wanted - so she takes matters into her own hands to get back at her sister: She propositions the groom's brother for an Anger Bang. Surprisingly enough, Kade accepts, setting off a series of events that even Thea couldn't see coming.
Kade is at his brother's wedding for one reason, and one reason only: They are the only family each other has. He may not see eye to eye with his brother, but he loves him. And when Thea decides to approach Kade, he's just distracted enough to take her up on her offer. Then he proceeds to fall in love with her.
The sexy times are steamy, the banter is witty and the characters are real. I would LOVE more stories in this universe, but I honestly want a Kade and Thea wedding so they can make fun of this wedding.
Yet again Avery Flynn writes a romcom that’s not only full of laughs but also plenty of heat and a healthy dose of heart.
Kade and Thea have each been affected by their family dynamics and history – to cope Thea fawns and Kade builds walls. What they anticipate to be, and let’s be honest is, the wedding week from hell also helps by starting to heal some of their wounds. I loved how Thea evolved and came into her own after reluctantly taking her therapist’s advice; she took risks, she pushed back and she repaired relationships. Kade’s character arc was more subtle but I loved how he learnt that taking a risk on love is better than not loving at all.
The banter between Kade and Thea is hilarious and oft times awkward as they tried to navigate a growing relationship that neither of them expected and had very little experience with. The chemistry is off the charts; their fast and slow experiment is as steamy as a fumarole.
This was a fun, low angst romcom, though any children of the 1980’s may cringe more than once.
I had so much fun reading this book. With all the banter and hotness between Kade and Thea, I had to read it in almost one sitting. I laughed out loud and fanned on hot scenes, but I had to go further into the story to see how their relationship would grow. I loved the humor, wittiness, and how the characters were developed so I felt they were real. I really enjoyed this book by Avery Flynn, who is a new author to me, but now that I like her writing style It won't be my last.
This was a pretty fun read! Thea and Kade are brought into the over-the-top reality tv wedding for their superstar siblings, Jackie and Dex. Thea is working on standing up for herself, and Kade will do anything to avoid relationships given his parent’s messy marriage. After getting swept up in both of their siblings’ pre-wedding drama, they decide they are going to take out their revenge in a no-strings-attached “anger bang” arrangement. Feelings are caught (and hurt) along the way, and the characters all grow and develop throughout the week’s festivities. I recommend this book if you like a reality TV/Hollywood themed spicy rom-com.
The perfect mix - hilarious, steamy and heartwarming
Oh my goodness. I loved this opposites attract, fish out of water, wedding disaster, finding your voice romance. Thea and Kade are the best hot, adorkable and wounded souls together in this heartwarming and emotional romance. They are portrayed beautifully as real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really trying to just do their best as messy humans. Thea is former child star turned paleontologist who has trouble standing up for herself. She has been roped in to being a bridesmaid at her actress sister’s reality show 80s themed wedding. Kade is a well known author of true crime books whose brother is the groom at the wedding. He has also been roped into the week long wedding craziness. Learning that her sister only asked her to be a bridesmaid at the insistence of the show, Thea decides to anger bang Kade to get back at her sister. Thus starts their acquaintances with benefits arrangement that keeps morphing and growing more complicated with bigger and bigger feelings on the journey to their HEA. To get there they must unpack a lot of baggage and deal with their pasts because they’re continuing to negatively impact their lives all the while dealing with the eye popping insanity of the wedding. The story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline. It gave me all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, and cheering as shown in sweet moments, steamy scenes, hilarity, drama, supportive friends, messy/dysfunctional families, painful pasts, and heart squeezing love.
I genuinely do not understand how this book is recieving so much praise in these reviews. Had this book been any longer, it most definitely would have been a DNF. I was expecting a cute romcom but this was just so disappointing.
Our main character Thea is so insanely boring. She's a paleontologist, goes to therapy, and lets people walk all over her. There's nothing wrong with going to therapy. In fact, I'm a huge supporter of therapy but Jesus Chirst why did she have to make that her entire personality? It seemed like every other sentence she was spewing some shit about going to therapy. She talks about her career but the passion for it was lacking. No details about why she loves dinos...nada. Not a fan of her at all.
Kade was also kind of an ass. I didn't really understand his appeal too much. The while incident with his mother and trash taking Thea was just horrible. Did he even say he was sorry about that? I could be wrong but I don't think so. Idgaf if he didn't mean it. Instant NOPE for me.
Not only did the characters suck, but the dialogue and commentary was so so stupid. All of the "pop culture" references were extremely forced. See my notes for my thoughts on those lol.
Please do not waste your time reading this book.
