For five long years I didn’t know my cat could turn into a vampire. That means I’ve spent five long years squishing little black toe beans, participating in all-night cuddles, and calling a full-grown man my itty bitty stinky kitty baby . When my near-death experience forces Zylus Myrkur to tell me the truth about how magic is real, I nope my way right back into my fish bowl. I will not be participating in any tropes, thank you. This is not a fish out of water, enemies to lovers romantasy. This is me—barely functional adult—attempting to live my best life, which consists solely of reading books, eating cheese, and falling asleep on the couch. It does not include making friends with werewolf chihuahuas, meeting a moth faerie prince, or defeating a boogeyman. And it absolutely, completely, most definitely does not include falling in love. Falling in Love with My Vampire Cat is a laugh-out-loud romantic comedy with light fantasy elements, neurodivergent characters, and plenty of closed-door sizzle.
Camilla Evergreen is an alias of USA Today bestselling author Anne Stryker. Originally intended as a dumping ground for all things lacking fantasy, Camilla/Anne came to the shocking discovery that writing sarcastic, chaotic romcoms full of quippy heroines and adoring heroes has a kick to it.
Camilla/Anne’s neurodivergent tendencies leave her hyperfocused on writing sweet and sassy romances from dawn till dusk and lending whatever her current creative obsessions are to her characters. From arranged marriages to falling for the boss, there’s lots of love to go around.
I read this book as an arc and this is my honest review!
I LOVED this book. Please just go out and read it, its on KU now!
The author's writing is so reminiscent of the way my brain works, it felt like you were right there experiencing everything with Willow, because her thoughts (sometimes dark or intrusive) were really what its like to be a (in my case) millennial bookish introvert who has no idea what's she's doing and how they would probably react to this turn of random events!
Its so much more realistic (and I say that full well knowing that the cat turning into a vampire is not in anyway realistic - sigh) than other fantasy romance. Willow does not immediately swoon or start fighting in elaborate fight scenes. There are no intense action sequences or steamy forbidden moments. Willow FREAKS out when her cat turns into a vampire! She straight up declines any interest in going along with a tropey plot and decides to make it her own.
Honestly this book is at times hilarious, at times sad but also incredibly clever. I can't even give it the praise it deserves because I'm not as skilled at writing as the author!
She calls out the whole fantasy romance genre, I felt called out as a reader, Willow and Zylus called us all out. It was meta and it only added to it because it was so relatable, in a kind of thats what we are all thinking way.
At times it also made me cry - the book does deal with themes of loss and mental health, including just not being able to cope day to day. It also deals with self-worth and self-love and acceptance of who you are. Zylus was that person we all need to tell us that we are loveable and that its ok. The Sims expansion pack analogy honestly was just one of my favourite things I've ever read, I was talking to my bf about it and I was just relating hard.
The romance was so wholesome, especially after reading so many dark romances, which don't get me wrong I love, but actually sometimes you need an Alan in your life and I feel like Zylus was such an Alan!
If you want a book to upend your ideas about paranormal romances this is that book!
”My chest hurts. How dare the story gods burden me with such a hated concept. Might as well let out a breath I don’t know I’m holding and pick the lame option in a love triangle, too. Heaven help me. If a love triangle appears, I shall simply enter my room and never leave.”
There is just so many quote-worthy parts of this book. Honestly it’s ridiculous. It’s a wholesome rom-com that’s really hit the spot for me! It’s a clean romance, with no spice and honestly, it doesn’t need it.
Willow, our FMC, lives her life alone with her head buried in books. Acutely aware of all of the tropes we love so much, she wants none of it. Thank you very much. She’s content in her life, looking after her chickens and reading her books. And you know, not people’ing. Now tell me that just doesn’t sound amazing in itself? She’s brilliant, her inner monologue has had me smiling like an absolute idiot while reading this book. She’s misunderstood and a little bit lonely but she loves her peaceful live in the cottage she inherited from her grandma.
Until she rescues a seemingly innocent cat. The black kitty with the best toe beans, Lord Keres, Master of Mischief and Darkness.
Obviously, he’s not just a cat and he’s an absolute cinnamon roll of a vampire that’s so adorable. But Willow? She needs a beat. It’s a lot, finding out the little kitty cat you snuggle with is actually a male. An attractive male. A vampire. She wants to nope right out of that and curses the story Gods for putting her in this situation.
These two are adorable and while she had no intention of being part of any vampire romance, it falls together so well. She refuses, she butts heads but Zylus being the absolute adorable little fuzz ball that he is, he helps her through everything. He’s not patronising, he doesn’t push her. He helps her deal in her own way and he takes care of her when things are just too much.
Add a sprinkle of other faries, a werewolf Chihuahua, some boogeymen and poor Willow’s life will never be the same again.
“You are enough. You have always been enough. You will always be enough.”
It’s amazing. Honestly, I can’t praise this enough. Add it to your tbr!
If you’d like to read a book where green flags abound, look no further.
Never before have I realized how much I needed a paranormal romcom in my life. Such a sweet and fun book, I didn’t want to put it down. This book is written in a way that feels like the 4th wall doesn’t exist even though nothing is technically directed at the reader. It’s cheeky. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Willow is a funny and relatable character I can get behind. “Strong female lead is not my archetype. Perpetually exhausted pigeon is.” Girl, same. I had a great time reading about her journey of self discovery, acceptance and love.
Zylas is equal parts endearing and hilarious. The way he expresses his wants and needs while supporting Willow’s boundaries and well-being raised the bar for what I consider good fantasy romance and just romance in general.
The only thing I found I wanted more on was information on the grandma. I would have loved a flashback or memory of an experience they shared and further explanation on how and why she left everything to Willow.
Now, I’ll be running to go read a book about a Were-Chihuahua. 🏃♀️ Happy reading!
I couldn't finish this book. Both main characters were too whiny for me. However, the biggest struggle was the crazy-thought-train writing. My mind already works like that. When I stop to read, I want a nice clear thought pattern and a plot that moves forward. I got almost halfway through this story before I couldn't take the characters anymore. I really did want to like it. It was just too much of an effort to slog through.
So… ignoring my questionable taste in titles yet again. This book could’ve been good, but the author dropped the ball by taking all the tension out by skipping straight over the whole ‘her not knowing he’s a sentient creature’ and making the MMC a snivelling simp. The end.
Oh Camilla, Camilla, Camilla. Please can you write a terrible book so I know you're a flawed human? Actually don't, I'll cry if you do. Just keep writing amazing books like this one so I can love you even more.
I mean where do I start with this? A beautiful black cat with heterochromia, who also happens to be a beautiful vampire man. Sign me up. Make me his thrall, therefore giving me eternal life to read books and maybe complete my TBR like Willow? Man, this girl has her priorities straight.
Camilla Evergreen has a wonderful writing style, poking gentle fun at the tropes but utilising them beautifully. She creates a world where it's completely normal for vampire cats, were-chihuahuas, Moth Princes, Faes and Dryad's exist and thrive amongst humans completely undetected.
Willow herself is a unique charming young lady, although I can not understand her love of spiders. She refuses to believe in the tropes the storytellers are creating in her world and she is still coming to terms with the cat that shared her bed for five years is not only a vampire, but an incredibly handsome vampire at that. And she used to squish his toebeans!
Zylus is adorable, totally in love with Willow and calls her Starlight. He is the squishiest vampire ever and his best friend is Ollie, the aforementioned weredog, who chooses to take the form of a chihuahua.
I am really looking forward to reading the rest of this series, and if you're looking for a paranormal romantic comedy, with HEA, closed door romance, forced proximity, only one bed, no third-act break-up and squishy toe beans, then you need to read this book. I mean like now, go on, read it, are you reading it yet? Why not? Go read it!
If I could give this zero stars I would. I absolutely HATED this book. The entire thing was just the MC having a giant pity party and everyone around her catering to it. Homegirl had no real issues so why she felt the need to be so insecure, constantly put herself down, and act like everything in her life is a giant shit show is beyond me. If you like weak, whiny, crybaby MCs then this book is for you.
When you've read so many plot driven books and your head starts to spin you need a solid pallet cleanser. This book was everything I never knew I needed.
It's the perfect read for this time of year. I was filled with nothing but pure cozy vibes whilst I read it. I'm a massive fan of Camillas writing. I find it so effortless to follow and I adored how the whole culture of readers - specifically romantasy readers are called out in this book. Who doesn't love a gentle poke at all the tropes we know and love whilst implementing them in such a unique way. Her writing style is just fantastic.
Totally loved the characters in this one aswell and I cannot wait to see what happens next .. also curious to see if my own cat is secretly a vampire ...
𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 • enemies to lovers • he falls first • one bed • fated mates • age gap
Can I just say, wow this book surprised me in the best of ways I wasn’t expecting and I can’t fully explain it?!
Never have I ever read a paranormal fantasy romance. I’m familiar with them because the craze was kinda hard to miss. (sparkly vampires, anyone?) But lemme say, this was decidedly LESS TOXIC. Like, actual green flag material.
In short, I related to Willow way too hard, she & Zy were adorable, and the found family vibes were immaculate.
p.s. I reread this within a month because the audiobook was released & it’s PERFECTION! 🤩🤩
I really liked the beginning few chapters. I laughed at some of Willow’s observations and her thoughts on literature. But then her cat is revealed to be a vampire and the book stagnates. Willow cries, willow is angry, willow is mean to Zy, Willow bemoans her story and blindly compares her life to a story. Zy proclaims his love, Zy tells Willow she’s perfect, Zy kisses Willow on the forehead. Wash, rinse, repeat. There is not much in way of a plot arc.
Was that the best book I've ever read? Surely not. If I am to maintain any self-respect or esteem from others, my favorite book can't be a rom com... can it?
I have a few disjointed thoughts:
This author is coming for your bullshit about love and romance and angsty, out of control vampires making for good relationships. Is he a vampire, and do they fall in love? Yes, and yes (it's in the title, people).
Loving and being loved is so supremely vulnerable. This book captures that so well. It is never a failure to love someone and not receive their love in return. That isn't even love.
Let's bring back the normality of physical affection between friends, ESPECIALLY male friends. I can not describe how much I loved reading about the male best friends snuggling on the couch, crying in front of each other, wiping away each other's tears, and giving forehead kisses. Too many men are starved for physical affection and safe spaces for their emotions. Their wives cannot handle 100% of that responsibility.
You're enough. You don't have to be hotter, stabler, or kinder. Everyone is deserving of love. All you need to do is accept it. Everyone will bloom under love. Love is a choice and re-choice. Love is not a feeling to fall into or fall out of. Maintaining honesty and vulnerability about your needs and pain will not always be met correctly, but is still always the correct way. Keep being vulnerable. Keeping being hurt. It's the only way to joy.
This book needs to go to jail for misleading and scamming readers. I had sooo much fun at the beginning and I told everyone and their mothers that I found a hidden gem, only to be disappointed and bored and wished I could slap every character( especially the MFC)
Zylus: “I promise to love you into eternity, starlight, until the last of the heavenly host winks into darkness. With every breath, every touch, every moment I feel your heartbeat in my soul, I will love you.”

This book is a breath of fresh air—a quirky, sarcastic take on paranormal fantasy romance. 🤪🧛🧚♀️✨
It's like stepping into a cozy cottagecore paranormal fantasy with a twist. Instead of the typical strong-willed, broody MCs, we have Zylus 🧛🐈⬛❤️, the cinnamon roll vampire cat shifter MC, and Willow💁🏻♀️💅🖤, the gothic low self-esteem but witty FMC. Their moments together are adorable, especially when Zy is in cat form and Willow pampers him. 🥺🥺 I enjoyed the author's writing style, particularly Willow's monologues that seem to break the fourth wall at times. 😂🤣
I have a love-hate relationship with Willow. 🫤 I relate to her a lot, but despise her wishy washy attitude. Around the 50% mark, Willow becomes too whiny, lacking effort in resolving her conflicts, which made me pity Zylus. He’s such a swoon-worthy book boyfriend but our girl Willow is just so in denial with herself most of the time. 🙄🙄 Despite some endearing scenes, Willow's negativity sometimes dampens the mood. 😫 Her character devlopment is not convincing enough. Additionally, the plot in the middle felt directionless and stale.
Nevertheless, it's still a cute read overall. I seriously in need of more cat shifter books 😽
This was a hilarious romp into the paranormal romance realm. I love how Camilla Evergreen calls out the usual tropes that prevail. You’re 500 years old and dating a 17 year old? Pervert! You’re obsessed with my blood? No thanks. We are destined to be together? Let me think about it and get back to you.
She tackled this genre with humor, some fresh ideas, and logic. I love the new world she created. Zylus was amazing, as a cat and as a man! I had trouble with Willow’s internal dialogues, but I loved Zylus and his snuggly kittyness so much! I also loved the preview chapters about our favorite chihuahua. It was pure torture to get a taste of that story without getting all of it!
I’m still processing this masterpiece so my review will be brief. Camilla is an amazing author that validates my feelings with every book she writes. I didn’t think it was possible to feel so connected to another FMC of hers but I did. My thoughts spiral out just as much as Willow’s and now I know that I just need a vampire mate to balance me out😂. I love the world of Faire that she created! I don’t want to spoil anything but their kiss was so worth the wait!! I love Zylus in both of his forms and how devoted he is to Willow and when he calls her Starlight, I just melt 😍. I can’t wait to continue reading the next books in the series!
The entire story of Willow whose last name I’m not certain ever came up, is a very different young woman with poliosis, or a white steak of hair in the front of her otherwise raven black hair. She also has the dramatic habit of wearing laced up dresses with lots of lace, always in either black or white in a very gothic style and young people call her the witch that lives in the woods. Willow rarely leaves her little cottage in the woods where she keeps a garden and a few chickens, and has it decorated to every romantic girl’s dream.
One day when willow walks into town she sees kids picking on a black cat with one green eye and one blue eye and they say that the witch is coming for her familiar. She chases them away, and the cat crawls in to her shopping basket, and then follows her all through the store and home. Before she knew what hit her, she was saying sickly sweet things and playing with his little bean feet.
Then came the night Willow found herself having a terrible nightmare that she was outside in her nightgown, she heard something terrible then a man with familiar eyes was looking down at her and telling her it would be okay and that she was safe. Was there blood on her face and soaking her nightgown? When Willow awakened from that nightmare she was relieved because it seemed so real! Then she realized she wasn’t wearing the same nightgown she wore to bed, and heard the sound of someone in her kitchen.
There was a tall man with long, silky black hair cooking in Willow’s kitchen, and when he turned, she recognized his eyes from her dream. They were also the same eyes that belonged to her cat. Oh, so all this time her cat has actually been a vampire, but to save her last night he was forced to make her his …thrall?
This is not a typical vampire romance, because Willow has issues with people. Our vampire is a little different too in that his best friend is a were Chihuahua and they hang out with faeries. There is no serious romancing that happens in this book, but it’s somehow even more touching and interesting all the same since Zylas really loves Willow as she is. Because really, who doesn’t want to find someone who loves you with all your issues? Seriously, it’s cute too, because the guy is a vampire who is also a cat. He knocks muffins off the counter in stores. Who does that? Cats. Fun and interesting read. The e book had some grammar and typos that bugged me, but didn’t ruin the book.
The story is about Willow. She has always been different and has no interest in becoming the female lead in this book. After 5 years, she learns that her cat is a vampire who only has eyes for her. I didn’t know a vampire fantasy romance could be so cute and cozy. Zy knows that Willow is so much more than what she thinks about herself. Throughout this book he proves that to her. She finds out that she fits right in with his odd group of friends. I loved the message of this story, even though your different you deserve to be loved too.
I always appreciate how this author keeps her books clean, it takes talent to be able to write like that and still give the readers that “loving feeling”🤣 (aka cue smutt).
Willow finds a stray cat and has this cat for FIVE years before he reveals himself to be a shape shifting vampire fae who is in love with her. He only did it then because he had to save her from a boogeyman attack. One of my favorite parts is that his best friend is a werewolf that shape shifts into a chihuahua, big chihuahua fan here but if you think I’m not side eyeing my dogs right now you’re deadass wrong.
Meanwhile, Willow is a loner with anxiety who wants no part of any of this, she just wants to live alone in her cottage and read. Love that for her.
That’s just the jist. I don’t think any of that spoils anything. It’s all ridiculous tbh but it was a fun read.
Ask willow her opinion about immortality Her : yay more time to finish my tbr. What about watching your friends and family die willow ?? Her : nah I'll read all books I want now _______
this is a cozy paranormal comedy There should be more books like this No third act break up No stupid Mc The supernaturals in this ?? They're all very polite ______________
Omg, have I ever related more to a MC ? I don't think so! The way the MCs mind works is a lot like mine. Now this is a very clean , possibly even cottagecore , romance and again it's absolutely hilarious and disturbingly insightful! This one is far outside the scope of a title I would normally pick (well genre specifically ) but I LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS book and will be reading the others for sure !
So good, funny, sweet, romantic (no smut), lovely!! I might write a better review later, but don't let the title scare you away. This book is so fun and adorable.
Language: None. The author omits the swear words by saying things like, 'he swore' and then continues the sentence. But no words are actually printed.
Violence: Very mild. There is a scene at the beginning of the book where it's implied a character nearly dies but it's vaguely told. There is some biting (one character *is* a vampire) but it's not gruesome whatsoever, and it's never without permission.
Sexual: Higher mild. Some kissing, making out, and an implied steamy dream that is only vaguely described. There is a lot of language like "I want you" and talking about wedding nights and such, but there is nothing on screen. Cuddles and caresses abound. It leans to almost steamy a few times, but doesn't go over a line into 'closed door' or 'fade to black'.
Trigger warning: Deals with a neurodivergent character who struggles to process emotions, has intense anxiety, and overthinks everything. It's INCREDIBLY accurate so it may trigger anyone with the same issues, or it may be really validating. Will depend on the person.
The only reason I'm rating this a 3 star instead of a 4 star was because of how much this book triggered me. I get immersed into characters and plots, and Willow's inner dialogue was almost manic at times and it keyed me up while reading a few times. Ironically, my very tenuous mental balance got knocked out of whack reading Willow and I was ready to lay on mybedroom floor to try and take a few hours to process why this book was affecting me so deeply.
I was shocked at how accurately Willow was portrayed as a divergent thinker. I've never seen it handled so perfectly in a book. And frankly, it's made me think I need to look into the matter for myself more with how much I just felt...exposed in reading her character. Sheesh.
As for the story, I also got triggered as they talked about how Willow was the way she was because she in her ancestry and that's why emotions were hard for her. So, me in my little existential bubbled went all sad face and had a mini depression episode of thinking, 'that's not real so I'm just messed up.' Had to work through that as well. This book felt like therapy work.
Which is why it also took me over a month to read it and I nearly quit at least twice.
I didn't like aspects of the romance either. It took a majority of the book to explain what Zy's flaws were. I was with Willow: what the heck would he want to hang around her for? It almost seemed toxic at some points because he just put up with a lot of crap from her--especially since he could basically read her mind. Sometimes it almost seemed self abusive from Zy's point of view for me. I felt bad for him, and also felt like he had a little dependency going on there. It was a messy sort of relationship. But I do think that in the end, it was handled well in how they are going to grow together and help each other's weaknesses. It DID work for me, it just wasn't wrapped up in a pretty bow like you usually see in fiction. It fit the vibe of the story.
So really, this book is a 4 star, my knocking a star off is purely for my own emotional/mental difficulty with the book. And I needed to remind myself not to read it again with the lower star.
