“What I had taken for A Golden Age was in fact Late Silver”
Interesting read mainly describing Paris in 1926 - exactly 100years ago. Bit too much meat & dining for me but did find some of the culture around food pre & post war including doctors opinions on protecting the liver, slimmer fashion after the was (returning soldiers did not tend to be overweight) & the Austrian / Swiss retreats was very interesting. Bit too wandering for higher stars but I do think interesting man and great writer.

AJ Liebling was a journalist who was lucky enough to spend time in Paris as a young man. He was sponsored by his father, and was supposed to be studying. Instead, he spent much of his time exploring, especially for a great meal. A lovely look at Paris during that time.

2.75/5 - I enjoyed a few parts throughout but I just found him and the way he writes to be annoying and hard to read for most of it which made it not the most pleasurable read in my opinion but it was short enough read where I felt determined to finish it (and complain the whole time)

Picked this up on account of being one of Anthony Bourdain's favorite books. The passages on food and dining are exquisite, of course, but this brief little gem is far more than that. It is a beautiful portrait of Paris between the wars, as nostalgic as it is realist.
