Such an entertaining duology! King Arthur is always an amazing legend to read about, though this series really didn't rely on it too heavily, more of a background plot, but I still enjoyed what was there.
Tamsin was a great FMC. Independent, untrusting, and sarcastic. I think these types of FMC's can sometimes make really dumb decisions because of these characters, but I didn't really see that with Tamsin. She was a loner, but she wasn't dumb. You see her struggle with letting people in, even after being betrayed SEVERAL times.
Emrys was pretty great too. My memories from the first book are a little foggy, but he was also a great MMC. Entitled, dickish, but a good man at the center. He had a lot of work to do in this one to make up for some shit at the end of the first book, and I accept his work 🤣
There were a couple of chapters that were very reminiscent of Chapters 54 and 55. IYKYK.
Not as intense but still so good 🤌

Such a brilliant conclusion to an exciting, adventurous duology!!
I went into this book with nothing but good vibes - I remembered nothing from book #1, save being entranced by the rivals-to-lovers romance, and fascinated by the Arthurian retelling. And look, I worked it all out!! This captivating sequel followed on from book #1 with those same two enjoyable aspects, plus gorgeous developing female friendships (and sapphic romances!), and plot twist after plot twist. I honestly couldn't put this book down - sleep was sacrificed a few too many times, but it was worth it!

As always, Tamsin was a prickly, vicious fmc - always on her guard, but fiercely loyal. I adore her character, she's so dedicated to those she loves, and honestly she's just incredibly funny. And her relationship with Emrys... butterflies!! They're so cute and so perfectly matched, and I adored Emrys in this book, as per usual.
“I would follow you anywhere. Through dusty library stacks… into cursed woods… across drowned kingdoms… You’ve become the map of my life. There will never be any adventure worth having, any prize worth finding, that’s greater than you.”
I was also really happy with how the book ended for the antagonists - it was satisfying and didn't let the villains off with minimal punishment, which always irritates me. I truly have no idea how much of the Arthurian stories this retelling ended up following, but I enjoyed the unique storyline nonetheless, and had the time of my life with all the twists.

Oh Silver in the Bone. For being from such a well respected author, this beautiful, badass duology really fell under the radar for the sin of not just being about romance and being weird.
The original Silver in the Bone took me completely be surprise. It was a shockingly dark and uncomfortable dungeon crawling story that I described as being "as close to Dark Souls as a book for teenagers can get". It billed itself as a King Arthur retelling in a time where we were seeing a few of those (most notably Legendborn) The thing is, this series only vaguely uses Arthurian legend in its storytelling, and it pulls largely from lesser known mythology to tell its story.
Book two focuses on the aftermath of the kid's big long MacGuffin failure of epic proportions- in their search for breaking curses and finding Neve's mom, the crew find themselves looking at a devastated Avalon, a face turned heel Cabell working with the enemy, and back in the real world with nothing but questions.
Silver in the Bone is such a well paced story- theres always something happening, but it also reserves a lot of moments for pure character development. We get this quite a bit with the siblings in this book, with Cabell being a secondary POV character giving the perspective into why he betrayed the crew and what life is like as a henchman working for the bad guy.
The girls meanwhile, are scrambling to stop Lord Death while also evading the Wild Hunt. This plot line was honestly so much fun. This book is primary set in "our world", but we don't suddenly get thrown into an urban fantasy- Alexandra Bracken does a great job making all of the settings unfamiliar and a bit unsettling. Our main three ladies find themselves seeking salvation, and evading enemies they didn't even know they had.
Emerys, our little traitor love interest, also has a part to play in this book of course. I thought the managing of his relationship with Tasmin was excellent. Its challenging to make the two leads get together in book 1 and still have it be interesting, but a little betrayal and tension really make this work for a second book. Their "mean little rich boy" and "poor outcast girl" romance doesn't lose its bite in this book and actually grows quite a bit in maturity. Emery's character is added to quite a bit as well.
All of the secondary characters REALLY shined in this book, Nash particularly became a quick favorite- but there were even characters who get their introduction in this book who were incredible and charming. Tasmins limited POV does not at all diminish the way these characters are used.
The Mirror of Beasts has a lot of magic and mayhem, but is not as dark as the first installation. Regardless, it keeps the same mature tone, and actually gets snappier. Even if this second book is sort of the "Wrap up", it actually paces much better than book 1, which I recall many folks struggled to get into.
I would compare The Mirror of Beasts to the 6th-7th Harry Potter books quite comfortably (though this one is actually trans friendly, as a new non binary character brings some much needed joy in a dark setting) Our heroes on the run, the bad guys in control, the magic world in peril...and this book is VERY heavy on the friendship y'all. There is romance, but this is a great book about girls working together through a traumatic situation to save the world.
The ending felt rushed in the last 50 pages, but thats sincerely my only complaint. This duology is really nearly perfect to me, and I am so glad ive gotten the chance to experience it. GO BUY IT NOW!

4 stars. High-octane in its action and harrowing in its stakes and darker elements, The Mirror of Beasts is an excellent bookend to this gleaming silver sword of a YA fantasy duology.

18 hours audiobook!! 486 pages! Book 1 ended with a cliffhanger. Book 2, started with an adventure to save Cabell, Tamsin's brother from Lord Death's control.
The beginning of this book has a glossary of different characters and info about them. It helps to remember who's who because there are so many characters.
Book 1 ended with that cliffhanger but book 2 didn't continue. There was a chapter on Emerys first then a chapter on Tamsin and the ladies from Avalon. Somehow they got themselves captured and Emerys came to the rescue. Emerys decided to join their adventures. Their first stop was to find the Bonecutter. I was surprised to meet the Bonecutter. Then they saw Lord Death and his followers did some damage to someone they just met. They saw Cabell and someone else they recognized. They had to stay in hiding to keep safe. Then their journey took them to someone Tamsin knew but disliked. There, they look for the mirror of beasts but found something else instead. Unbeknownst to them, a lot will happen here.
There were a few twists and turns. Tamsin always wondered about herself whether she can do any magic. Cabell questioned his place in life. He made some decisions and it hurt some people.
There are 3 views in this book: Emerys, Tamsin, and Cabell. I enjoyed the 3 views. The majority of the views was Tamsin.
There is an enemies to lovers trope. It starts with hate and insults. I don't know when their feelings changed. Wish there were more of Emerys' views. The romance was very light. Three kisses in two books for two couples.
The audiobook was good with different voices for different characters even the scary characters. The lady in the mirror has some humor. I wonder why she collected eyelashes.
I enjoyed book 1 last year which was called Silver in the Bone. This is my first series read from the author. Will have to check out the others.

4.0 ★— After how much I loved the first book, I felt my feelings of adoration cooled off a little during my read of this one. Firstly, I almost felt like this story was needlessly long and drawn out. I’m not sure why, but there was a point in the middle where I just wanted everything to wrap up, because of how slow it felt, and I’m by no means someone who shies away from a chunky book!
Still, Bracken managed to flesh out character dynamics beautifully, and I did lowkey tear up at some parts, because seeing cold book heroines slowly open up is my kryptonite. I might also be the only person who absolutely gave less than a rat’s ass about Tamsin’s brother and wished I could have skipped his chapters. A naive boy being seduced into following evil because of insecurity and a sense of outsiderdom? Yawn. Boring. I wasn’t moved by his storyline at all.
On the brighter side, Caitriona and Neve’s little romance was cute, and I loved seeing it develop here. Emrys and Tamsin took a while to finally clear the air, which I found realistic, and I liked how the book handled their relationship overall.
The book’s larger plot, shaped by the tragedies of the first installment, was concluded really well. I was almost hopeful that some things might be made a little more whole, just because of how much loss the last book included, but no, Bracken stood firmly by her choices and the darkness of her world, and I adored that in turn.
This might be one of top Arthurian retellings with how uniquely it treated that aspect of the story and completely played around with it. I am now more tempted than ever to read more of Bracken's backlog!

I really enjoyed this one. It was much faster paced than the first book and I had no idea how everything was going to wrap up until the very end. Tamsin isn't a character but stands out to me but I really like Emrys, Caitrona and Neve. RTC.

Der Abschluss der Dilogie hat mich im Vergleich insgesamt leider nicht ganz so begeistern können. Da schon einige Zeit vergangen ist, seit ich "Silver in the Bone" gelesen habe, fiel mir der Einstieg etwas schwer; zumal mir Avalon als Setting gefehlt hat, was für mich aber den Großteil der besonderen und packenden Atmosphäre im ersten Teil ausgemacht hat.
Auch die Handlung schlich zu Beginn etwas um sich selbst und ich hatte das Gefühl, nicht wirklich voranzukommen. Das wurde im weiteren Verlauf besser, bis dann plötzlich alles auf einmal passierte. Auf den letzten knapp hundertfünfzig Seiten kommt man kaum zum Luftholen. Alle bewegen sich ständig zwischen Leben und Tot und rauschen von einer lebensbedrohlichen Situation in die Nächste. Das Drama-Pendel schlägt mal hierhin und mal dorthin, was sich eher ungünstig auf das "storytelling" auswirkt, auch wenn die Emotionen und die Dramatik eine gute und nachhaltige Wucht haben.
Ich glaube, dass ein Wechsel der Erzählperspektive dem Buch gut getan und die Story dynamischer und nachvollziehbarer gemacht hätte.
Aber so war mir das alles etwas zu wild, als hätte Alexandra Bracken versucht, eine riesige Party in einen viel zu kleinen Raum zu quetschen.
Das Finale fand ich dann allerdings aber wieder sehr stark und es scheint so, als könnte da noch mehr kommen, hätte ich absolut nichts dagegen.. Trotz ein paar Schwächen in der Umsetzung ist die "Silver in the Bone" - Dilogie für mich definitiv eine der besten YA-Reihen auf dem Markt: düster, mit Ecken und Kanten, temporeich, komplex, ohne "spice", aber dafür mit einer sehr süßen "slow-burn Romance"... Fantasy braucht keinen "Matratzentanz" um gut zu sein, "just saying".
Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir da wieder etwas mehr zu unseren Wurzeln zurückfinden, denn ich vermisse die klassische YA-Fantasy von früher..
Ich werde in jedem Fall weitere Bücher der Autorin lesen, möchte dann aber bitte weniger Fehler in der Übersetzung, andernfalls muss ich wohl nochmal zur Schule gehen und besser Englisch lernen um die Bücher im Original lesen zu können.

Trotz ein paar Schwächen in der Umsetzung ist die "Silver in the Bone" - Dilogie für mich definitiv eine der besten YA-Reihen auf dem Markt: düster, mit Ecken und Kanten, temporeich, komplex, ohne "spice", aber dafür mit einer sehr süßen "slow-burn Romance"... Fantasy braucht keinen "Matratzentanz" um gut zu sein, "just saying".
Ich hoffe sehr, dass wir da wieder etwas mehr zu unseren Wurzeln zurückfinden, denn ich vermisse die klassische YA-Fantasy von früher..
Ich werde in jedem Fall weitere Bücher der Autorin lesen, möchte dann aber bitte weniger Fehler in der Übersetzung, andernfalls muss ich wohl nochmal zur Schule gehen und besser Englisch lernen um die Bücher im Original lesen zu können.

To, co jest jest moim ulubionym elementem tej serii, to zdecydowanie nawiązania do legend arturiańskich. Bardzo podoba mi się jak autorka wykreowała świat, na wzór celtyckiego Avalonu, jednocześnie modyfikując go na potrzeby własnej historii. Odnajdywanie kolejnych magicznych artefaktów oraz odkrywanie tajemnic tego uniwersum, było naprawdę świetną przygodą.
W tym wszystkim nie zabrakło też nutki romansu, z początku nieco bardziej w stylu “rivals-to-lovers”, jednak rozwijał się on powoli, dokładnie tak jak lubię.
Jeśli macie ochotę na fantastyczną przygodę inspirowaną legendami arturiańskimi, koniecznie zapiszcie sobie tę dylogię!

Seemed to enjoy this book in the Duology more than it's predecessor.
Epic..(nearly) earth shattering epic...with its fair share of turns and surprises scattered through.
I actually dislike the main protagonist Tasmin..but she did become a little more friendly through this books events...and I wonder if we'll ever see her again.

Note to self: reread this duology because holy shit!
This is one of the rare few better written YA fantasies out there in this decade. It’s difficult to find a YA fantasy that doesn’t feel too immature or lackluster with the worldbuilding or character development, but Alexandra Bracken does it all so skillfully in the Silver in the Bone duology.
It’s dark. It’s complex. The author wove in Arthurian legend and the Wild Hunt in such a skillful manner that you can tell she’s paying homage to the original stories instead of using them willy nilly.
Tamsin feels like a real character with flaws. Her friends and the secondary characters also have their own distinctive personalities and feel like well-rounded characters too. It’s such a breath of fresh air to find secondary characters who aren’t just flat sounding boards to give the MC more dimension in their own character building.
I’ll say though, there was so much action in this installment that it was hard to keep up with what was happening. But I love this duology enough that I’ll definitely go back and do another reread. I might even rate this one higher after I can let it all soak in.
I can’t wait to read more of Alexandra Bracken’s work! And I don’t think I’ve ever said this, but I’m also pretty excited to do another reread either in the fall or winter so I can let the somber mood set in. This is definitely not a summer read.

I can't remember the last time I rated three books in a row 5/5 stars that were not a part of the same series, but here we go!
I LOVED THIS SEQUEL SO MUCH. I went breathless when I saw I was granted an e-ARC of this book, so thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with an advanced copy!
This book is just as good if not even better than Silver in the Bone (a tough feat, in my opinion since that is in my top 3 books of last year.) The Mirror of Beasts features everything I love from Silver in the Bone: magic, wonder, treasure-hunting, portals, adventure, romance, a found family, and more.
The plot was so fast-paced and amazing. This is one of the most compulsively readable books I've read in a while, and I applaud Alexandra Bracken for keeping the story at such an incredible rate the entire way through. I was never bored and I was always at the edge of my seat. Every single beat of the story was utterly compelling in its own unique way. I loved the quest at the heart of the story and all the subplots we explored to get there were fascinating as well. The ending was also one of the most perfect, full-circle series conclusions I've read in recent memory.
Tamsin is easily one of my favorite main characters of the last few years. I as the reader felt every single emotional beat and I loved reading the story through her eyes. Every single character in this series has phenomenal development and stories. Only Alexandra Bracken could give such complete, intriguing storylines to non-POV characters. I also loved the 3rd-person chapters we saw from Cabell's perspective as they rounded the story out in ways I was not expecting, providing a new angle on Lord Death and his missions. Catriona, Neve, Olwen, and Emrys are after my own heart. They are so well-developed and I love the found family we have developed across these two books. I really hope to see more of them in the future if Alexandra Bracken ever decides to return to this world. The romance here is also...*chef's kiss* SO GOOD. A ton of new characters pop up like the Bonecutter and the Hag of the Moors who were SOOOO complex and interesting. The Hag is genuinely hilarious as well. The villains are also so well-realized and layered.
Each location was entirely transportive and masterfully described. Alexandra Bracken paints a wonderful picture and provides the readers with a portal (or Vein) of their own. I won't spoil which settings we encounter or why on the quest to find and use the titular Mirror of Beasts, but I will say they are all equally compelling and immersive.
Alexandra Bracken's writing is one of my favorites and I will always auto-buy her books. She honestly has yet to disappoint me and I don't think she ever will. Add this to the list of her amazing books and series because it's right up there.

The character development is satisfying, the romance is swoon-worthy, the plot is exhilarating to the end, the writing will pull you in from the first page to the last, the settings will take you to mystical lands, and the ending will rip your heart out and put it back together. With the mystical Avalon having crash-landed in an unprepared contemporary world, Tamsin Lark must reconcile a lot of her firmly held beliefs with her more recent experiences, all while continuing to keep Lord Death and his incoming threat at bay, hopefully thwarting the spread of his destruction once and for all. As Tamsin and her few trusted companions begin searching for any kind of artifact or relic to aid them, the stakes are constantly rising, threatening to overtake them all.
While this was more a book of halves, with the first half leaning too far into the romance side (not for my tastes, but more at the sacrifice of balance in the novel), the second half more than made up for it. Bracken has successfully pulled the well-trod ground of Arthurian legend into contemporary times and grafted it onto the background of some fresh characters for modern YA audiences. The steady building action and that thrilling finale, made me almost wish this wasn't a duology. I'll definitely need to check out Bracken's other books.

This is the riveting conclusion to the Silver in the Bone duology. Tamsin and her allies are the last defense against Lord Death as betrayal on numerous fronts leaves them reeling. Tamsin seeks allies and powerful artifacts, venturing into new realms to find a way to stop The Wild Hunt. Arthurian legend blends seamlessly with contemporary action, reopening old wounds and rekindling a star-crossed love that will melt your heart.
This duology is easily one of the best I’ve ever read. The found family dynamic is beautifully portrayed. I am a sucker for found family. I felt each emotion the characters felt and I fell in love with so many of them. I could understand where they are all coming from, even if I didn't agree with their choices all of the time. The characters are flawed, and their journeys are compelling.
Bracken’s storytelling is masterful, evoking a range of emotions and left me SOBBBING more than once. I am shocked that I didn't stain the pages with my tears because of how much the author just decimated my feelings. The blend of folklore, secrets, betrayals, and family drama creates a dark but mesmerizing story. These are dark waters to tread, but they are worth every second. Despite the emotional turmoil, - don't worry - you'll get a happy ending despite the many, many, MANY tears.
If you enjoy flawed and amazing characters, folklore and legends, and heartfelt family drama, this duology is a must-read.

If you enjoy flawed and amazing characters, folklore and legends, and heartfelt family drama, this duology is a must-read.

First I want to say I LOVE the new covers so much more than the original! The new covers are even prettier than the Owlcrate version of Silver in the Bone I have (but I liked the original cover of that book too).
I wish I had read these a bit closer together, but I requested this one as soon as it popped up (then had to wait a month for approval, boo). Mirror of Beasts picks up right where book one ends, and the story doesn't really allude to what happened before - so I felt a bit lost. There are a lot of names and events that I just could not recall, and I think that affected how immersed I got into the story.
The first book was okay, I wanted more from it. I almost felt that way in this book too. The story is so much different than I was expecting, and I again felt like the Arthurian legend took a back seat to the main story. Arthur was there, the sword is there, but everything else is just new fantasy story. Which is fine, I have nothing against fantasy, but if it is marketed as an Arthurian Retelling I would love to have more of those details woven in.
We do get some good backstory on a few of the characters in this book, which answered questions from book one. There are also some good action sequences and a few parts of the story I felt particularly invested in too. Toward the end I was wondering if this was supposed to be a trilogy, but the story did wrap up well (and quickly), with enough of an open ending that there could be future adventures with these characters if the author wanted it.
Overall, this duology was different than I expected and I wish that I could enjoy them more. It could very much be right book, wrong person - especially because I loved Lore by this same author. I am interested in seeing where she goes from here, and I will definitely read her next book/series. I just struggled to get invested in these books, and wanted more with the Arthurian retelling aspect!

A really solid sequel to "Silver in the Bone," which I absolutely loved. I loved seeing the group continue to work together and bond, but I did find myself getting frustrated with some of Tamsin's inner monologue about Emrys throughout the first half. There was a lot happening throughout this book as well as many twists and turns; some I saw coming and some I absolutely did not. Without giving anything away, I'll say I was very satisfied with the endings for all of the characters, although I do wish we had gotten a little bit more of Nash. Even with limited screen time he quickly became a character I adored and I would have loved to have gotten to spend a little more time with him during this one. Overall, I enjoyed it and I had a great time with this adventure.

I absolutely loved this conclusion to this modern day Arthurian legend inspired duology! It's not a retelling, instead, it's Arthurian legend woven into a modern fantasy tale. And there are some great twists on this epic lore! I would recommend a refresher if it's been a while since you've read book one. I also wouldn't read this review if you have not read book one! Lord Death plans to unleash the horror of Anwnn upon the living world and the Wild Hunt is carving a bloody path through the world. With the dream of Avalon having not panned out as they hoped, Tamsin and her friends are all that stand in the way of Lord Death. There's the mystery aspect of the book, trying to figure out how to stop him. There's this intensity and suspense felt all throughout as there is a time restraint on this with Winter Solstice approaching. You can really feel it in the writing, it's awesome. There's a search for the Mirror of Beasts, tons of magic and mayhem, a strong and snappy and kind of funny female MC, the bad guys are in control leaving the magical world in danger and our unlikely group of heroes must save it. We have different POVs, one of which is Cabell who is now working for the enemy. I really enjoyed those sections and insight. It's just an action-packed and excellent story, with little bits of romance thrown in, but that never is the main focus. And That's my personal favorite--fantasy with romance, not pure romantasy. I cannot really express how much I loved this duology! I love a modern world mixed with fantasy and having been fond of Arthurian legend since I can remember, I just ate this whole thing up! Excellent story, excellent world, excellent characters. 5 stars all around!

Die Geschichte setzt genau da an, wo „Silver in the Bone“ aufgehört hat, und wir begleiten Tamsin und ihre Freunde zurück in die Menschenwelt. Klingt erstmal nach einer Verschnaufpause? Denkste! Denn Lord Death ist aus seinem Gefängnis entkommen, und nun beginnt ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit, um den legendären Spiegel der Bestien zu finden und eine Katastrophe abzuwenden.
Was mich sofort begeistert hat, ist der unglaublich bildhafte Schreibstil. Alexandra Bracken schafft es, die Welt so lebendig und detailreich zu beschreiben, dass ich das Gefühl hatte, direkt neben den Charakteren zu stehen. Die Atmosphäre ist düster und mystisch, genau mein Ding! Dabei bleibt die Handlung immer spannend – keine langatmigen Passagen, sondern ein flüssiger, rasanter Lesegenuss. Ich konnte das Buch wirklich kaum aus der Hand legen.
Besonders beeindruckt hat mich die Charakterentwicklung. Tamsin ist eine starke, komplexe Protagonistin, die mir richtig ans Herz gewachsen ist. Ihre Emotionen und inneren Konflikte sind glaubwürdig dargestellt und haben mich mehrfach mitfühlen lassen. Aber auch die Nebencharaktere sind keine bloßen Statisten – jeder hat seine eigene Tiefe und trägt zur Geschichte bei.
Und ja, es gibt jede Menge Spannung und Action, aber auch die Emotionen kommen nicht zu kurz. Freundschaft, Liebe, Verrat – hier ist alles dabei, und das in genau der richtigen Dosis. Besonders die unerwarteten Wendungen haben mich überrascht und dafür gesorgt, dass ich ständig mitfiebern musste.
Kurz gesagt: Dieses Buch hat einfach alles, was eine gute Romantasy-Geschichte braucht. Wer auf spannende Abenteuer, starke Charaktere und eine Prise Herzschmerz steht, wird hier voll auf seine Kosten kommen. Ich kann es nur wärmstens empfehlen und freue mich schon auf alles, was noch kommt!
