Broken flowers drift on the foggy surface of the water. All is quiet, until the squad of police cruisers race up to the grand house that stands alone on the lakeside. Two girls lie inside, their bodies broken and still forever…
When Special Agent Nikki Hunt is called to a home on Bone Lake, she is devastated to find blood all over the floor and two young women who clearly fought for their lives. But the viciousness of the scene isn’t the only thing that strikes Nikki. The house was the scene of another murder twenty years ago. The killer was never caught. Is this a terrible coincidence, or have they struck again?
Nikki’s team quickly identify the girls from their belongings in the bedrooms upstairs. They had a party the night they were killed, and Nikki realizes that one attendee, their friend Alexia , is missing…
Desperate to find Alexia, Nikki soon discovers that the only survivor of the original massacre, Matt Kline, still owns the house. She is instantly suspicious of him. But he claims he rents it out and hasn’t been there for years, and as Nikki looks into his dark eyes she sees her own terrible past.
With time running out, Nikki and her team dig into Alexia’s life, and find out she was fascinated with the original Bone Lake case. Amongst her things, they find notebook after notebook about serial killers. Then Nikki is shocked to learn that Alexia was having a relationship with Matt. Has Nikki make a terrible mistake trusting a fellow survivor? And can she get the truth out of him, and find Alexia alive, before it’s too late?
You’ll be glued to the pages of this heart-racing new thriller in the Nikki Hunt series. Fans of Lisa Regan, Mary Burton and Kendra Elliot will be gripped by the twists in this incredible read.

Another thrilling addition to the riveting Nikki Hunt series! This book mainly focuses on Nikki’s current investigation and very little on Nikki's private life. Readers do get glimpses of Rory and mentions of Nikki's daughter, but it is the investigation that is front and center in Bone Lake. Nikki will need to be on her toes as this investigation will touch a little close to home for Nikki as she looks back on her own parents’ deaths.
Special Agent Nikki Hunt has been called to a murder scene in a home on Bone Lake. Two young women are found viciously murdered inside, and a young man is found injured at the bottom a dumbwaiter. This is not the first time this home has seen death. Twenty years earlier, a married couple and their daughter were found slaughtered with only their young son surviving that brutal and bloody night. While investing the current crime scene, Nikki learns that a party was held the night before and Alexia, the young woman who rented the Airbnb is missing. The plot thickens as Nikki is informed that the owner of the home is Matt Kline, the sole survivor of the attack twenty years ago.
Were the current murders a coincidence? Those at the home were watching a documentary about the original murder at the home twenty years ago. Was this the work of a copycat killer? Has the original killer come back to kill again? Why has this house seen so much death?
The clock is ticking as Nikki and her partner try to find Alexia alive while tracking down a killer. Delving deep into the lives of both Alexia and Matt, some revelations are made and as more questions are asked, more secrets are uncovered.
I enjoyed reading about the investigation and how Nikki approached solving this case, how it affected her, how she worked with her team, and how she showed empathy to one character in this book. Nikki is a strong and vulnerable character who will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of things. I love her drive and determination to see justice served. I have loved this series from the very first book and enjoy the character development that has transpired over the course of the books.
I enjoyed doing my own super sleuthing while reading this book. I had a few suspects in mind in the middle of the book but ruled them out closer to the end. This one kept me on my toes, and I enjoyed how the secrets of various characters were revealed.
This book is not long in length but had a lot going on between those pages. The pacing was steady, and I enjoyed the sense of tension as well as not knowing who could be trusted in this book. Another solid installment in the series.
Well written, gripping, tense and hard to put down! I look forward to reading the next book in the series!!!
3.5 stars

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
When FBI Special Agent Nikki Hunt was called to the Bone Lake house that had been the scene of horrific murders twenty years prior, she didn't expect to be confronted by more murders in the same house. Now an Airbnb, the old case had never been solved. With these new murders, Nikki wondered if the two cases were linked. And when she discovered the sole survivor of the earlier atrocities was still the owner of the house, her suspicions were raised.
Matt Kline was only ten years old when his parents and sister were murdered and his memories of the event wouldn't leave him. His aggression at the media was understandable; his lack of respect for the police the same. But due diligence had to be followed and Matt was on the suspect list for the latest murders. The one thing that saw Nikki, Liam and the team racing for answers was another young woman who was also at the party, was missing. Alexia wouldn't have much time left, Nikki was sure. But could they find her still alive? Alexia was a true crime buff and had apparently been "stirring the pot". Did she make the original killer angry? Or was it someone else entirely?
Bone Lake is the 8th in the Nikki Hunt series by Stacy Green and once again I was drawn in from the beginning. The twists and turns, the fast pace - all kept me turning the pages to find the answers. I enjoy Nikki's character very much, and am looking forward to #9 already. Recommended.
With thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
BONE LAKE is the eighth book in the Nikki Hunt series, a gripping crime thriller set in Stillwater, Minnesota by best-selling author Stacy Green.
The books in the Nikki Hunt Series include: The Girls in The Snow (Book 1) One Perfect Grave (Book 2) Lost Angels (Book 3) The Girl in The Ground (Book 4) The Trapped Ones (Book 5) Her Frozen Heart (Book 6) Her Last Tear (Book 7) Bone Lake (Book 8)
This is my review of Bone Lake.
While this book can be read as a standalone, as the author does a great job in supplying background information, I would recommend you read the series in order to get a better appreciation of the growth of the characters. It is such a great series, so sit back and enjoy!
FBI Special Agent and criminal profiler Nikki Hunt heads up the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) that deals with crimes in the jurisdictions of Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Tyler, Nikki’s ex-husband had been murdered at the hands of a serial killer Nikki had been chasing. Nikki is now married to Rory who is in the process of adopting Lacey, Nikki’s six-year-old daughter. Rory owns a successful construction company.
Special Agent Nikki Hunt is called to a home on Bone Lake, to assist Washington County Sheriff Miller, who she had worked with before on many cases. Now at the crime scene, Nikki is shocked to find blood all over the floor and two young women who clearly fought for their lives. But the house was the scene of another murder twenty years ago. The killer was never caught. The only survivor of the original massacre, Matt Kline, still owns the house, who claims he rents it out and hasn’t been there for years.
Nikki’s team soon identify the girls and determine they had a party the night they were killed, and one attendee, their friend Alexia, is missing…
Nikki is determined to find Alexia. Nikki and her team learn that Alexia was fascinated with the original Bone Lake case. The team finds many of Alexia’s notebooks about serial killers. They then learn that Alexia was having a relationship with Matt.
Nikki must find Matt and get the truth and find Alexia alive, before it’s too late…
An absolutely gripping and totally addictive thriller that will keep you racing through the pages all night long.
Many thanks to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for my digital copy.
Bone Lake by Stacy Green is the eighth in the FBI Agent Nikki Hunt series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Contains spoilers from previous books) Nikki Hunt is an FBI Agent whose parents were murdered when she was young. Their real killer is now behind bars, after she helped free Mark Todd (who she originally helped incarcerate). She now lives with his brother Rory, and family dynamics are settling down. She has a young daughter (Lacey), and her ex-husband (Tyler) was murdered by a serial killer (Frost) who is also now behind bars, and is apparently Nikki's half-brother. Nikki heads the BAU unit based out of St. Paul Minnesota. Her team consists of Crime Scene Analyst Courtney Hart and Agent Liam Wilson. They work closely with Sheriff Kent Miller.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) Nikki and the team are investigating the deaths of two young women found savagely beaten at an Airbnb on Bone Lake. A young man was found injured in the basement. The girl who had rented the house is missing. Alexia had felt it was the perfect place to watch the crime documentary of the case that she plans on solving. That crime had occurred in this house 20 years ago.
There are a lot of people to interview, as Nikki soon discovers that Alexia had a lot of guests come and go throughout the day. So, will one of these visitors prove to be a killer, or does this have something to do with the violent murders of the three people 20 years ago....and whose killer was never caught?
Sheriff Miller works on finding Alexia and her car, while Nikki has her staff interviewing the guests. She and Liam start looking into the cold case, and discover that the house is still owned by the son of the family that were killed 20 years ago. Matt has not had it easy, and misses his older sister to this day.
Nikki and Liam are at odds. Liam is sure that the perpetrator is Matt, but although there is a lot of evidence against him, Nikki thinks it's all circumstantial. Alexia had dug into Matt's past, and used him to find out more about the murders. He felt betrayed and was angry. Nikki feels a certain empathy towards Matt, as it brings back memories of her own family and their murders.
Meanwhile, they have a new boss to deal with.
My Opinions: I am really enjoying this series. The plot was very good, and although I had an idea as to the identity of the killer, I was not positive.
There were a lot of characters, and sometimes I had to stop and think whether this one belonged to the current case or the cold case. Occasionally they were involved in both. It wasn't confusing, but it did make me stop and think.
And yet the characters were interesting, although I can't say I particularly liked many of them. I was not fond of Alexia or her family, and I couldn't quite figure out why her friends were so supportive. I cheered for Matt, but that could be because of the empathy Nikki felt for him. His family were not high on my list of likable characters either. However, I continue to really like Nikki and her team. The jury is still out on her new boss.
Overall, this was a fast and entertaining read. Please, read these books in order, as you'll want to get to know Nikki's past to understand her present thoughts.

This story was filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing; all I could do was turn the pages and see what would happen next. It is the eighth book in the series but my first, and I plan to correct that and read the other books. Many thanks to #Bookouture and #NetGalley for my gifted eARC.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this absorbing book
a cold case a murder at a previous murder house
nikki hunt has been called to a bloodbath of a murder, two young students are found bludgeoned to death, overkill and no possible reason for it and young girl is missing
to backtrack what happened they have to investigate and interview all those people that attended the party at the air Bnb, so a lot of time is going to be used up
but with hints from an old murder case that happened at the same place years ago sends shocks waves down nikkis back
man oh man this book kept me on the edge of my seat, so many red herrings galore and the final reveal was most unexpected.....
cant wait to read the next book in this thrilling series
This is a great crime thriller. Special Agent Nikki Hunt is called when two young women are found brutally murdered. It’s a strange crime as the murders took place in a house that featured on a documentary that night, about murders twenty years ago. With another young woman missing, Nikki is determined to find the killer. There’s a few people hiding secrets which makes it hard to work out who the killer is and time is running out to find the missing woman. This is a gripping crime thriller that I really enjoyed. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Bone Lake is the 8th book in the Nikki Hunt series, but it is the first I have read. It can be read as a standalone, as the crime is committed and solved within it's pages, but I am now going to read from the beginning of this series as there is a lot of backstory that I want to learn. The book opens with a crime committed in 2002, the brutal killing of 3 family members. Fast forward to the present and there is another killing at the same house. Two highschool seniors have been beaten to death, another is missing and a young man has been injured after the dumb waiter he was in fell apart and he fell. Nikki Hunt is called in by the local sheriff. Is it the same killer? Is it a copycat?
The present day murders are wrapped up in the showing of a Netflix special trying to get the 2002 coldcase reopened. The missing girl, Alexia, was involved in the next episode with information that might blow the case wide open. Nikki, Liam and her team are in a race against the clock to find the missing girl. Solving the cold case would be a bonus. I enjoyed seeing how the investigation played out and how Nikki approached solving it. We see how the team is affected, especially when they disagree on where to go next, and possible suspects. There were things in Nikki's past that gave her a different insight and empathy, but was it misplaced? Nikki is a strong and vulnerable character, but she is tough, persistent and didn't give up or give in. Her partner, Liam, also has some stuff in his background that affects his behaviour and I know I will learn more when I read the previous books. The case was gripping, and although the murders were grisly, I didn't find the book as dark as some other crime thrillers I have read. I had a feeling about one of the characters from the first time he/she is introduced and I was right, not somethin that happens often. Overall, I found this an enjoyable, entertaining story that I read in a couple of sittings. If you enjoy a police procedural, one with strong characters and enough personal stories to make them interesting, then I recommend you pick up the Nikki Hunt series by Stacy Green.
BONE LAKE is number 8 in the Nikki Hunt series from author Stacy Green. This was the first book I have read in this series. What a page turner! The twists are coming at you fast and furious. I love mysteries that keep me guessing, and this one checks that box! I really enjoyed BONE LAKE and I will definitely be reading more of this series in the future!
Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my gifted ARC.
This review will be shared to my Instagram (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the near future.
Stacy Green has done it again with another fantastic instalment in the Nikki Hunt series! As always, I was hooked by the prologue, set in 2001 where a family are brutally murdered, and just the young boy survives, jumping forward to the present day where more brutal murders happen in the same house as the previous one years ago. It is up to Nikki and her team to find out what happened and who did it and try to find Alexia who is missing.
This was so good, so many suspects that I was clueless on who could have done it. Liam did annoy me a little as he was so sure who did it, it was getting on my nerves. I liked that even now Nikki’s backstory from book one is mentioned, it is relevant. I was a little sad that there weren’t many home-life things happening in this one, it was purely the case. I would also like to see more family moments with Nikki, Rory and Lacey. I have loved this series and feel much more is coming from Nikki Hunt.
Bone Lake by Stacy Green - Kept me gripped the whole way through!! Thankyou Netgalley & the author for the Arc* I appreciate it so much and thoroughly enjoyed it :)
It follows Nikki who is an agent with the fbi , she worked on a case "The Kline Murders" which daughter Amy Kline, mother Sandy and her dad where found murdered at their Victorian style family home that her great-great grandfather built. The only survivor was the younger brother Matty as he escaped through a dumbwaiter! Brutal murder gives details of the murder (also discusses Sexual Assault) so check trigger warnings before reading book. Kline Murders took place in 2001 and 20 Years later Agent Nikki is asked to be apart of a double homicide that has taken place in the exact same location as The Kline Murders from 2001 and it basically takes you through them trying to piece together the story that led to this event, The murder that occurred years later at the same house makes you question is it the same kidnapper or is it a copycat obsessed with the Kline murders? This gives u such good descriptions of the house too we love old creepy house stories where chaos has ensued!!
This is a gripping and page turning book that gives you some gruesome details of the crimes committed it's an absolutely great book, you are trying to solve who the killer could be as you read, but the book throws u so many twists and makes you question everyone involved around the case. It really gets your brain going I’ll say that haha, I cannot wait to check out more from Stacy!
Welll what can I say to say I was hooked would be an understatement I couldn’t stop reading it , it’s very well written and easy to follow I would happily read it all over again .
The story follows FBI Agent Nikki Hunt who worked on “ The Klines murder case “ which the oldest child Amy Kline , Mother Sandy Kline and Father Ted Kline were found murdered in their Victorian family home. Sadly the only survivor was none other than the youngest Kline child and brother Matty who manger to escape the killer through the old dumbwaiter !
Before reading please do check the trigger warnings !
The Kline murders took place between 2001 then 20 years later , turns out agent Hunt is asked to be apart of a double homicide that has taken place within the same house in 2001 basically they use the old and new evidence to track and find said “ killer “ is he or she from 20 years ago or do we have a copycat on our hands.
I couldn’t stop turning the pages highly recommend this book if you love the mystery / true crime genre or if you’re looking for a new read I will definitely be reading more books from Stacy Green that’s for sure.
I just wanted to say a big thank you to Stacy Green and NetGalley for my very first arc forever grateful to have read this arc.
This was so good! I liked that it was more about the investigation, and less about Nikki’s personal life. Starts off with the brutal murder of three family members years ago. Now there’s a Netflix documentary series talking about the crime, & on the night that it premieres, there’s another brutal murder at the same house. Nikki has her hands full with this investigation, looking back at the original crime & figuring out how the new crime fits in. Lots of tension and action keeps this story flowing. This was a good addition!
Another gripping installment in the Nikki Hunt series. This time the crime brings back memories of her own tragedy. Nikki and her team hunt for the killer of a twenty year murder and a present day one that may be connected. The investigation puts her and Liam at odds. I could not put this one down. You’ll definitely be reading this late into the night.
Just loving this series it works so well. It can be read as a standalone or as a series (I haven't yet read the whole series only certain books but I am going to it is that good).
The crime telling was brilliant and loved the ending - only saw it coming towards the end but didn't know the how. I am looking forward to the new dynamics with the new boss that is going to be interesting to see work out.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
I recently discovered this series and this is the second book I’ve read. I love the series because once I pick it up I don’t want to put it down. I try to find every spare minute to read more of the story. The book is a quick, satisfying read. The story opens with a murder and the fast forwards a few years to the anniversary of the murder and the release of a documentary. There are a lot of characters which keeps the book very interesting. If you like police procedurals you will want to check out this series.
Bone Lake is the eighth book in the Nikki Hunt series. I have read books 1-4 and somehow missed 5-7. Not sure how that happened but am glad to have been given the opportunity to read this one.
Nikki Hunt works on cold cases for the FBI. She gets a call and runs out to a murder scene. The problem is it was the scene of a crime 20 years ago and is again in the present day. Twenty years ago, three Kline family members were murdered, the father and wife and their oldest child Amy. The crime was never solved. Their youngest child Matt survived due to Amy's quick thinking and sends him down a dumb waiter and off to a nearby neighbor to call for help. Now, twenty years later on the anniversary of the crime, after watching a documentary, two girls are dead and another is missing.
Nikki is called out to see if she can help not only to find the missing girl but solve the present murders. She will have to work the both the present and the cold case to see if they are connected. The first person that comes to mind is the survivor of the Kline family murders. Nikki will have compassion for the troubled lone survivor, but she believes he is holding something back. Liam her partner wants to follow the circumstantial evidence which points to Matt. Nikki believes there is more to the murders of the past that link the present which gives them plenty of people of question and investigate further. Nikki believes time is running out for the missing girl.
The is a wonderfully fast paced murder mystery. I am proud to say I suspected who would be to blame right from the start and was happy to be right. Mysteries are my favorite books to read. I love being totally engrossed in the story and trying to solve the who done it. This one was no exception. I really enjoy the Nikki Hunt series. The writing is consistent from one book to the next. You can pick up where the previous one ends and feel like you are meeting up with an old friend. I highly recommend this series.
I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.
For two decades a vicious murder has gone unsolved. This murder destroyed an entire family leaving only one person alive. When Special Agent Nikki Hunt is called to this same home, she finds another bloody scene. This time a young woman is missing. Nikki Hunt understands family loss firsthand. Her parents were brutally murdered years ago, and this case is stressing her out. Matty was the survivor of the first crime that occurred in this home. He owns the home now and is immediately a prime suspect. Nikki feels a bond with Matty, but unlike Nikki who used her loss to help other victims of crime, Matty seems to be a bit of a wanderlust. He was definitely my first suspect.
These were gruesome murders from before and at present. This time the clock is ticking because they hope to find the missing girl alive. Nikki Hunt and company are perfect for the job. Stacy Green takes you on a wild ride of epic proportions as the puzzle pieces are slowly placed together to possibly join the past to the present so that both crimes can be solved. The real question that has to be answered is are the murders connected or is is just a grisly coincidence? Nikki Hunt is a tenacious and fearless investigator who will stop at nothing to solve the mystery, even risking her own life.
This was a gripping tale of a cold case investigation, and reflected on how survivors of brutal crimes suffer and recover from their loss. I was hanging on by my fingernails as we skidded into the ending. You will not be able to put this one down once you start it.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
My Review: Loved!!!!! Stacy Green once again wrote another fabulous book in this fantastic series. I can’t say enough good things about her and this series. It is one of my favorite series of all time. What I love the most about these books are all the characters. I love being immersed into their life and feeling everything they feel even though I know it’s not real. To me it is real even if it’s just for a few hours and until the book is finished. I really like that I’m right there with all of them trying to solve the case. I also love that there are so many twists and turns in her books. You never know what is going to happen next which leads you to staying up all night just to finish it. I get no sleep when I pick up one of her books. Can we talk that ending for a minute. Wow, just wow. I never saw that one coming. Blew my mind and that’s hard to do. What a great way to end the book. I will definitely be reading more by this author and this series.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When I first picked up Bone Lake by Stacy Green, I wasn’t aware that it was number eight in a series. I soon discovered that this absolutely doesn’t matter and can totally be read as a standalone novel. Nikki Hunt is an FBI agent and each book in the series covers different cases. Some references are made to what has happened previously, but nothing that means you need to read the others first.
I really enjoyed Bone Lake. It was incredibly fast-paced, and I could hardly keep up with what was happening, let alone who I thought the murderer might be! The author cleverly keeps you guessing, right up until the very end, and there were a few times I thought I’d worked it out, only to have something or someone else thrown into the mix!
If you enjoy a good thriller which will keep you on your toes, then I would definitely recommend Bone Lake. This is the first book I have read by this author, but I’d love to read more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review Bone Lake by Stacy Green.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Stacy Green for allowing me to review this ARC!
This book starts off with a chilling murder from 2001, resulting in the deaths of a family with one member still living. Fast forwarding to present day, the home that the murder took place in is now an AirBnB and owned by the surviving family member. When an amateur teen sleuth decides to rent the AirBnB on the night a documentary comes out about the murders things don't go as planned. Another set of murders occur. Are both murders connected? The teen detective was onto something when researching the 2001 murders and it she may pay the ultimate price. Nikki Hunt is tasked to solve the present day murder but may solve both at the same time.
This book was a bit confusing with the amount of characters but was an easy mystery read. I enjoyed the story started off with a gripping murder and caught your attention right off the bat! I would recommend this book to those who like quick thrillers with a twist! I hadn't read any other of the Nikki Hunt books prior to reading this one but since there is a series I may pick up a few to read!
This read had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! It starts with a bang, and I was just sucked into the story, wanting to know who killed the Kline family and why, and what was the connection to Nikki’s new case.
I enjoy returning to Stillwater and whatever case Nikki & her team are investigating. I love the dynamic her & Liam have as a team - particularly that they can disagree so strongly about a suspect but not let it colour anything else about their relationship in & out of work. I like that there always seems to be personal connection to these cases for Nikki - I feel that it adds depth of character that you would not ordinarily see.
There’s plenty of red herrings & I enjoyed each and every reveal. I can’t wait to read more in this series!
Thanks to Bookouture & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What a beginning this story has! Draws you in right from the start. The story revolves around one house and the horrendous murder that took place there 20 years ago. Now there are more murders in the same house. How are these murders connected to the murders 20 years ago? Is this a copy cat? Or, could it be the the original killer? I love seeing how Nikki and her team work together. There has been a lot of growth within the characters since the first book in the series. Certainly a story that kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Whenever I start a book in the Nikki Hunt series, I always prepare to do some non-stop reading until the book is done. Every book in this series is great, and Bone Lake is an excellent addition to the series. Nikki,Liam and the team are back! Nikki is on the hunt to find out who murdered 2 teens and if the murders have to do with the past Kline murders. Is this a copycat or is the killer back?? So many twists and so much suspense. Absolutely loved this book and love this series.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the chance to read an advance copy of Bone Lake by Stacy Green. This is the 8th book in the Nikki Hunt series, and I love this series! This was a fast and thrilling read, as Nikki is called to a murder of 2 girls in a house on Bone Lake which was also a murder scene 20 years ago. As with the other books in the series, there are plenty of twists and turns throughout the book! Totally recommend this series!!!!
I was all in right from the prologue on this one…..read it in about 24 hours. The connections between brutal past and present murders are unraveled by familiar characters, and I thought I had it figured out but was proven wrong. I could feel the emotions and ups and downs right there with all the characters.
In 2001, Amy Kline and her parents were brutally killed at their residence. Before she confronted the killer, she helped her younger brother to escape. The murderer was never identified. Four months ago, Special Agent Liam Wilson’s girlfriend, Caitlin Newport, an investigative reporter, worked with Netflix to produce a documentary on the Klines’ murders. She interviewed SA Nikki Hunt, Wilson’s partner, as part of that documentary. At the present time, the Kline’s old residence is now an Airbnb. A group of high schoolers rented for the weekend to binge-watch that documentary. Sheriff Miller calls SA Nikki Hunt. He tells her that when the cleaner arrived this morning, she found two dead girls. One girl is missing. He asks her for help. Now, two multiple murders need to be solved.
The main storyline has two threads. The first thread is the investigation of the recent murders and the abduction. The sheriff leads this investigation. SAs Hunt and Wilson assist. Because of all the connections to the Kline murders, SAs Hunt and Wilson focus most of their efforts on this case. This is the primary thread of the two. There are many obstacles to these investigations. As mentioned above, the documentary, which seems to play a significant role in the current murders, is the brainchild of SA Wilson’s girlfriend. SA Hunt also initiates FBI involvement without her supervisor’s approval, as he will not report for work until the next day. The investigation of the Klines’ murders had many issues. A sheriff in a neighboring county conducted the original investigation because he was the first on the scene. The two sheriffs feuded over this investigation. The sheriff at that time was Sheriff Miller’s predecessor, who now is dead. The other sheriff is still alive. There are missing, mislabeled, and undocumented extra items of evidence. Then, the original medical examiner’s autopsy report was full of errors that led to wrong conclusions for years. This storyline is very meaty — just what I like. Much effort is expended to unravel these complex investigations. There are many twists and turns and a surprising reveal. Suspense is maintained by the necessity to solve the recent murders because the abducted girl may still be alive. My attention was immediately captured and kept to the end.
Adequate new background information on SA Hunt and her family and friends, personal and professional, is provided to satisfy the regular reader of this series. Sufficient background information is provided from previous novels so that new readers will not feel they missed anything. The multi-novel B-storyline thread of SA Wilson’s and Newport’s relationship plays a supporting role in the main storyline versus being a pestering reporter. There is a significant event in this thread for the main storyline. This event brought a smile to my face.
The aspects of a novel that can cause some readers to stop reading are present in this novel. There are only two references to assaults on women. There are only a handful of vulgar words. The level of rude words is just a little more. Even if the violence occurred in the past, the details are provided and described in a more edgy way of how it happened. Lastly, this is the eighth novel in the Nikki Hunt series. I found nothing in this novel that required reading any previous novels in the series. I do not believe these aspects of the novel should stop most readers.
There were some issues, but all I saw was that they were made to keep the novel compact and moving forward. A few of these could not happen in real life, but this is a work of fiction. The murderer's identity was well hidden until the end, which kept me engaged to the end. As with the author’s previous novels, this novel is a straightforward read. I have read and reviewed seven of the eight novels in this series. I have purchased the novel I missed, plus a few other earlier books. This author has kept her position as a Must-Read author for me, and I look forward to reading more of her novels. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and rate it with five stars.
