Down, down, down. I am being pulled away, pulled apart, ripped at the very seams of my being. But a voice in the darkness, a name in the bitter cold air, pulls me back... She was never meant to be queen. But Veyka Pendragon sits the throne nonetheless, High Queen of Annwyn, Protector of the faerie realm. And at her side? The male who was once her enemy, then her ally, and now, something else entirely. The secret she tried so hard to protect was a lie. So was the brother she loved so dearly. She can hardly trust the reality she sees with her own two eyes, let alone the feelings burning in her chest—feelings that she swore she’d never feel again. Arran Earthborn has spent three hundred years killing his way across battlefields to find his place beside the female he loves. He will do anything to keep her safe… even if it means burning Annwyn to the ground in a quest for the truth. But the answers they seek lurk beyond… in a land of pain and desperation. The human realm. The Secrets of the Faerie Crown series is a twisted mythology retelling of the Arthur legend. It is a high-steam fantasy romance with dark elements.
This book was everything I needed and more. How am I supposed to wait 4 MONTHS FOR THE NEXT ONE!!???
For the warrior women fighting the darkness that just won't quit. In case no one told you, your wrath is justified. Make them bleed.
THE PLOT
Veyka Pendragon was never meant to be queen. It was always supposed to be her brother, Arthur. However, disease and magic has spread into the human realm and her realm, and it is only Veyka who can solve these issues. Answers only lie in the human realm after all. After living her whole life thinking she had no power, she suddenly is thrown through the rifts into the void at the expense of her body. This new power and magic has erupted and Veyka must protect her friends and the one she loves...her mate. She must travel to a magical island if she wants all her questions answered, friends and foes made alike. We follow Veyka and her journey to this island to find answers on the fae prophecies...only to be met with battle.
MY THOUGHTS
The Characters: If you thought Veyka was a bad bitch before, just WAIT until you read this book. Her character development through this series has been unreal. To go from someone so selfish and only thought about herself and her wellbeing to protecting her realm and her friends and even humans, who she despises more than anything. It was insane!! When we are introduced to the fae prophecies, Veyka was so stubborn it was a little aggravating, but I could understand. Veyka and Arran are my everything I love them so much. Them being fated mates just made everything a million times better. Their bond is unmatched. I will say this with my whole chest...PARYS DESERVES JUSTICE!!! What he went through and got was so unfair, and over these two books I've grown to love him. I would kill for him without a second thought.🔪 The side characters in this book were at times funny and witty, but their loyalty never swayed. Oh to be in this world...😔
The Plot: This book was filled with magic, politics, battle, friendship, loyalty, world-building, and love all tied nicely in a little bow. The pacing of the plot was amazing as well. There was so much going on that if you weren't focusing and really taking your time reading this you'd miss an entire subplot. SO much going on. But it all felt right! I loved the way the stories and adventures were tied together and every question you had would be answered by the end. The cliffhanger??? UNREAL!! I need this book in every vein, every organ, and FLOWING through my veins. Also the SPICE!! Oh the spice was so good. Definitely not as prevalent as it was in the first book, but I'm glad it wasn't because the plot was just top tier.
The Writing: This was so much easier to understand in terms of language and vocabulary than the first book. There was much more dialogue as well as an extra 2 POV's making 4 in total. I think the writing flowed nice and it wasn't as clunky and mushed together compared to the first book.
Overall, this was such a good start to the new year. I had the best time reading this and it didn't feel like 500+ pages. This whole series is one of the best adult fantasy series I've read and I am shaking in my boots waiting in anticipation for the third book! 🩷

FAVORITE SCENCES AND QUOTES
He'd wanted her before, loved her before. But this...Mate. This was something else. More than love or even lust. This was destiny.
When I realized my purpose in this immortal life was not to serve Annwyn, but its Queen.
I loved her--I'd loved her before I understood the meaning of that bond between us.
The Brutal Prince. My Brutal Prince. My king, now.
I wanted to worship her. She was everything I'd known she could be. More--she was my mate. Mine.
I'd underestimated her. Again. For maybe the hundredth time. It ended now. I would never underestimate her again.
"I will find you, Veyka. I will tear apart this world, realm after realm, until I find you. I will follow the bond, dig my own heart out of my chest to find that golden thread that connects us, and then I will use it to find you. I will never let you go. Not now, not in a thousand years. I am the greatest power Annwyn has ever seen. No one and nothing can keep you from me. Not even the void."
Seeing Veyka like this, smiling and laughing and without any of the trappings of responsibility...I understood why she seemed to be lit by an internal flame. She was free.
I was a male made for death. I killed. I razed cities. I commanded legions of vicious beasts. I was a vicious beast. But with Veyka, I became something different, something more.
She was the one tearing herself apart for her kingdom, while I was ready to burn it to the ground for her.
I'd been raped and tortured. I'd seen my brother, the only being I'd ever loved, murdered brutally before my eyes. I'd teetered to the darkness, until my own life seemed forfeit. Worthless. But I'd pulled myself from that darkness. And Arran had been the one to reach out his hand.
"I would have waited a thousand years for you to realize what was right in front of you."
"I love you. I would have loved you for a thousand years, even if you were never able to say it back." "A thousand year and a thousand more," I whispered, reciting the words of our joining. But this vow wasn't for Annwyn. It was for us.

I just couldn't wait to read this I've been thinking about it since I finished the first one 🥹
This is the second instalment in The Secrets of the Faerie Crown series.
I found this to be a more politically-focused and action-packed instalment, than book one, and I personally enjoyed this. It still had frequent steamy scenes and a swoon-worthy romance, as well as a cast full of all the most loveable characters, alongside this too. The perfect fae romantasy!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, Emberly Ash, and the publisher, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op, for this opportunity.
Throne of Air and Darkness, (Secrets of the Faerie Crown) is Book 2 by Emberly Ash. It picks up right where book one ended. I was delighted and emotional by this because the writing was good. Veyka and Arran brought me adventure and they were intense for their love for each other. They leave the castle to find answers and so much more. I recommend this one. A high 4⭐️
Thanks Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op via NetGalley.
I’m disappointed that I did not love this book as much as the first. Veyka just annoyed me a lot this time around. I didn’t agree with a lot of the decisions she made. She acted so stubborn and childish. The romance wasn’t even enough to save the book for me. I did not like how Veyka treated Arran for the majority of the book.
The plot continues to be the weakest aspect of the series for me. It was just a lot of travelling between different places and I found myself bored. There were also some events at the end that felt very anticlimactic. The author added a lot of twists and turns that are meant to surprise me, but it came off as very chaotic and messy. I also hated how some things got brushed over too quickly (ahem Parys).
Thank you to NetGalley for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This was a really good book im loving the characters and the plot is really ramping up the romance is wow yes please give me more im screaming and stamping my feet i just love arran in this we get to see different realms and alot of things get revealed and i couldnt put it down and jumped straight into book 3 id highly recommend
Dnf for now Absolutely devoured the first book but i had the hardest time with this one If i had to read one more time about the word mate i would’ve stabbed my eyes with a fork
Throne of Air and Darkness is Emberly Ash's second novel in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series. This novel focuses heavily on the relationship development between Veyka Pendragon, High Queen of Annwyn, and Arran Earthborn, High King of Annwyn. Throughout, we learn more about how their puzzle pieces fit together into the larger faerie realm, and even beyond it.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this Throne of Air and Darkness, but not near as much as Crown of Earth and Sky, the first novel in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series. There were so many conveniences... too many conveniences. This being said, there was a slight answer given for the exceedingly favorable outcomes Veyka and squad experienced, but not enough. Oh, and what happened to Evander?
Overall, Throne of Air and Darkness was a good continuation in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series, but not the best. I think that Ash could give so much more and I'm hopeful for the third and fourth novels. I also noticed quite a few spelling errors, such as "met here" instead of "me there." Special thanks to NetGalley, Emberly Ash, and Cara Maxwell Romance Publishing for access to a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.

I had a difficult time getting into this book more then the first one, although I enjoyed the fantasy plot line and the inclusion of a plus sized main character, I struggled getting on with the possessive romance that overwhelmed the plot. I think I've realised that this type of dynamic just isn't for me.
I did enjoy the development of the world building in this book and specifically Pary's and Gwen's' storyline, I wish that would have been explored more because I preferred their dynamin over the MCS.
Thanks to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
There is so much I would love to spoil. When I was 20% into the first book, I wasn’t sure if I was going to get into it fully, and felt like a bit of a dink for signing up to review all three, but they just sounded soooo up my alley and boy, I don’t think I was disappointed.
Much of this book is spent with Veyka, Arran and their little merry band, trekking through less than hospitable foreign land, looming threats and ALL the unease (both horny and dangerous). Again, I have to applaud Ash for subverting expectations while raising suspicion with subtle foreshadowing.
The opening from dual perspective to multiple perspectives in two different regions was thoughtful, and it was a pleasure to get a taste of Gwen and Parys working together to hold down the fort. Without contact with Veyka, Arran and co, nobody has any idea of what’s going on and that is KILLING ME.
This Arthurian retelling is rather loose (though I am not thoroughly educated!) but the familiar elements don’t feel stuffy or forced. Ash is an exemplary smut writer, these books are very hot, leaving nothing to the imagination, and do not make me cringe even a little bit. I believe my hopes for a secondary romance have been dashed and I will not be forgiving anytime soon 🥺 Arran and Veyka together turns me into enough of a puddle so maybe it’s for the best.
While the stakes get higher, the emotions messier, and the smut steamier, my only true complaint is that this book doesn’t shine fully on its own. On this quest to find Avalon, Throne of Air and Darkness spends much of its time expanding politics and world building in a new direction compared to Crown of Earth and Sky. The overarching quest offers a lot of scope as to how big deal bad this looming presence is, and there’s a lot of positive tension in a journey that feels a bit aimless at times. That niggling feeling may be due in part the fact that I am absolutely devouring all three in quick succession. However, even as a bridge sequel, (and as I’ve said in my previous review), I’m certain there’s intent in not seeing. My trust in Emberley Ash for a strong third book is rock solid, and I’m ALREADY lamenting that book 4 is not yet released.
Much thanks to Cara Maxwell Romance, NetGalley, and Emberley Ash for the privilege of reading this series in exchange for my honest review 💜
This is the second book in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series, and it was even better than the first one. I felt like we didn’t have such as intense world building, but the characters growth through the story compensated that, and I loved to see how they change through the story and the relationships develop between them.
The chemistry between Vekya and Arran was just as good as we saw in book one and I swear I could feel the electricity between them at some point. I felt like the ending was a bit rushed but there were so many twists that I didn’t even saw the villain arrive.
Overall, it was a great way to continue the story where we left on book one and I cannot wait to see what will happen next one since we got a bigger attention to the adventure and the fantasy perspective.
Thank you, NetGalley & the publisher, for approving me to read this arc and write this review.
I loved the politics, scheming, and world building of this one. I felt like there was more smut for the sake smut, and the editing errors came in thick at about 25% through and stayed for the journey 😅 I don't think I'm going to continue this series though.
“I will find you, Veyka.” He caught a strand of white hair, loose over my shoulders, tucking it back behind my ear. “I will tear apart this world, realm after realm, until I find you. I will follow the bond, dig my own heart out of my chest to find that golden thread that connects us, and then I will use it to find you. I will never let you go. Not now, not in a thousand years. I am the greatest power Annwyn has ever seen. No one and nothing can keep you from me. Not even the void.”
I am so enamored by this beautiful story! It’s dark, it’s twisty, it’s full of lies and secrets! And, it’s full of such beautiful love! The love that Veyka and Arran have together is so beautiful it hurts!
The quest through this book was so gut wrenching. I wanted to throw my kindle so many times! Like…why, just why!!
Throne of Air and Darkness by Emberly Ash is the second book in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series and picks up where the first left off, with Veyka’s disappearance. Even more than book one, this story is about fighting for love, even when it’s hard. In addition, it explores themes of redemption, fate and healing from trauma. This is a dark story and includes adult content so please check content warnings. Tropes and include a stabby FMC, touch her and die, mental health rep, court intrigue, found family, healing & comfort and a plus size FMC.
The Lovely: By far, the best part of this book was the characters, and their relationships. The author makes you care about them on a deep level and you become invested in their lives, their relationships and their happiness. The MCs relationship is messy and complex, with a side of angst and anger, all of which make it feel real, and special. Also, I have a new found love for Cyara - IYKYK.
Also Lovely: While this story focuses heavily on the characters, it’s worked against a mysterious plot and solid tension. What is happening in the realms in regards to Arthur’s death and the prophecy is still largely unknown and as the reader you’re trying to figure it out along with the characters. There’s always something happening to pull the story along and keep you turning to the next page. I will warn you the ending is a big cliffhanger and it left me sitting on my bed crying. I knew it would be a cliff but it really hit me in the feels.
Rating: 5/5 Stars 3/5 Flames
Recommendation: I received an advance review copy for free from NetGalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily. After the wild ride of the relationships, the ending and being a book that made me FEEL, this was easily a five star read. I’m not sure my heart will make it to book 3 in April but I’ve got to try, and hope that some of the things from the end of book 2 get “resolved” quickly. If you like dark romantic fantasy with strong character and relationship development, and that hits you in the feels, you would like this book.
Excuse me Emberly that ending 😳 I thought the first book ending was bad but this?! Is it April yet? Asking for a friend, I cannot wait for Court of Vines and Vipers.
I loved the journey that Veyka and Arran went on in this book. The spice is spicing and Arran’s mouth 🥵 It picks right back up from the end of Crown of Earth and Sky. They must journey with their trusted friends into human territory in order to learn the truth about Veyka.
The kingdom is left to be watched over by Parys and Gwen and we get a little taste of their POVs in this story along with Veyka and Arran.
Veyka and Arran must also work on their relationship now that they are joined and they find it takes a lot of honesty with each other outside of the obvious physical attraction. Veyka is still struggling how to stand on her own two feet, she was Arthur’s sister, then Queen and now so much more with Arran. She must learn to forgive, love and be honest with herself about her feelings. Arran struggles with being overprotective because he loves her and wants to unburden Veyka. Finding that balance for them is key.
Events are unfolding in Annwyn while they are away and when they finally reach their destination all hell breaks loose and Veyka must choose. Will she learn the truth about herself? Did she make the wrong choice? What is happening in Annwyn?
Read Throne of Air and Darkness to find out ☺️ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
I was fortunate enough to have receive an eARC through NetGalley for my honest review.
Throne of Air and Darkness is a steamy romp through realms in search of Avalon. We get so many answers to questions from Crown of Earth and Sky, in addition to a special gift of Parys POV!!
There is just as much, if not more, betrayal and subterfuge than we saw in the first book. BUT we also get tender and loving moments between our fiesty mates. The human realm is expanded upon in this sequel, with much less attention on the fae realm.
Veyka's powers are expanded on well, and the prologue gives crucial information for understanding the prophecies!
You definitely need to understand that Veyka is heavily impacted by her trauma, and as such struggles with not being given true choice. I don't think it would be fair to say she is being childish throughout this book, she is fighting to find herself and understand if what she feels is more than something predestined to happen.
Also, if you like spicy wolf-shifter romance... You will definitely get some of that action.
As always, thanks to Emberly Ash & NetGalley for providing a free eARC of Throne of Air and Darkness. This is an honest and given voluntarily.
I devoured Throne of Air and Darkness in two days, maybe. This was such a good sequel to the first book and the series, Secrets of the Faerie Crown, I cannot recommend it enough.
This is a NA series, and you should read all the trigger warnings prior to getting into the series. But, at the same time, the series tackles trauma and pain and deals with them with brutal honesty. You can see the characters dealing with it, growing, emerging and getting stronger as they go, with all their ups and downs.
The book, like the first one, is quite steamy, but it doesn't take away from the story and its development. Veyka, the FMC, really grows as a character in this sequel, accepting herself and her powers. Arran, the MMC, remains a truly morally grey character, but shows much more of his vulnerability. The side characters are great, and I like when we get to know and see more of them, not as props but as real parts of the story.
I'm so happy I was gifted this ARC and I can consider myself a true fan of Emberly Ash and her work.
Ok so I thought the first book was amazing but this one just topped that one which I didn’t even think was possible!
The journey that Arran and Veyka and just all their friends went through was so good and I loved every bit of it! I definitely think the world building in the first book was so well done and necessary now that I’ve read this one and can see how well constructed their journey is!
And ugh Veyka and Arran just became my absolute favorite in this book and I absolutely loved seeing their relationship develop but not only their relationship but also Veyka’s friendships were just so wholesome and I love seeing her growth. Not only hers but also seeing more of the characters and learning all about them was just so interesting as they are just as amazing as our main character!
I also really loved how it expanded on the King Arthur part of the story and was so shook seeing it all unfold but absolutely loved being so hooked by the story and falling in love with all the characters that I cannot wait for the next installment because what was that ending?!?? I thought the ending of the first book was wild but this??!! I absolutely cannot wait to read what comes next!
Throne of Air and Darkness is the second book in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series.
Plagued by an ancient prophecy, Veyka and her allies journey to the human realm, desperately seeking answers as darkness looms and threatens Annwyn.
Haunted by their pasts and shrouded in secrets, our FMC and MMC struggle to find balance with their fervent yet tumultuous bond. I loved seeing their relationship evolve from the first book and we are rewarded with plenty of steamy moments. 🪭🪭🪭
This multi POV sequel brilliantly portrays each MC’s journey of healing and self-discovery. This book gives us so many shocking reveals while expanding the world and left me gasping, screaming, and reeling. I cannot wait for Book 3!
Huge thanks to Emberly Ash and NetGalley for the opportunity to review with advanced copy! This is my honest and voluntary review.
Throne of Air and Darkness (Secrets of the Faerie Crown book 2) by Emberly Ash @emberlyashauthor
Review 4.75 stars Emberly, girl, you and I are going to need to have a chat about these cliffhangers! How am I supposed to sleep after that !? This is the second book in the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series. A delicious King Arthur retelling, but reimagined as though it was about his sister and everyone is Fae, sexy and stabby. I really enjoyed the first book, however I do think that I enjoyed this one more. I really enjoyed getting to see Veykas strength as a character come through as well as a more emotionally mature side of Arran. For anyone who loved the spice in book 1, you definitely won’t be disappointed by the spice in book 2! Honestly if you are into fantasy, fae, fated mates, touch her and die, found family and spice … then why aren’t you reading this series?! I was lucky enough to read the first 2 from @netgalley so I will be continuing this series under my own steam :)
I’m giving this book a 3 star rating because I was expecting more action.
We get new settings as they try to reach Avalon and I thought that would mean more action packed scenes and discoveries; instead, it’s mainly Veyka struggling to come to terms with her feelings for Arran while he patiently waits.
I love them, they’re the sweetest, and there’s a lot of trauma sharing that made me really sad for them. They deserved better.
But not much else happens in this book, until the very end. Oh boy… everything happens in the end. Hopefully, the next book will have more action throughout and we get more clarity on everything.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and author, for the opportunity to read this book. It has been great getting to immerse myself in this universe!
I found myself putting it down for a few days and getting a bit bored 2/3 of the way in, however the ending was really good!
There’s a few bits where the language is so flowery and vague you’re not quite sure what has happened until after the fact, and a few spelling errors I keep noticing but other than that I am enjoying it
There’s deffo a throne of glass flavour throughout, and I feel the next book will be the most exciting as it was left on a cliffhanger that I didn’t see coming
I do feel that some of the believable romance has been lost in exchange for just lust and opportunistic shagging which was a bit cringe at times
This is the second book of the Faerie Crown series, and it continues where the last book left off..
This book was fantastic. It's spicier and darker than the first one.
The writing style captivated me, transporting me straight into the story. There wasn't a dull page throughout, so much trauma, tension, love, and angst.
All the characters in this story play such a strong part that it's hard not to love them all. (Obviously, Arran being my favourite). The story itself was mysterious, and there were plenty of plot twists that kept me hanging on the edge of my seat.
But again, with the cliffhanger ending! The author is truly trying to make us suffer, having to wait for the rest of the story.
I received this book from NetGalley. I really keep finding myself wanting to like this series but I keep getting very bored. The character development was a little better but not really. The end was great, but given how long it took them to travel to that one spot the book probably could've been shorter. I liked the surprise ending. I liked having Parys as a third voice, but was hopeful that meant spicier things..ha! The FMC was also unlikable for a good amount of the book with how she treated MMC and even her internal dialogue It was just ok for me overall...
Emberly Ash continues her dark retelling of the Arthurian legend in Throne of Air and Darkness. This book is full of lies, deception, and digging for truth through layers of artifice. The readers will go on a roller-coaster of emotions with the characters, embracing the good, hurting with the painful, and trying to make sense of the bad. W b at started off as two people disliking each other, is now two people who love each other, and one willing to do anything to protect to sure the woman he loves is safe and content, if not happy. Throne of Air and Darkness is truly a work of art!
Throne of Air and Darkness by Emberly Ash is the second book in The Secrets of The Fearie Crown series. It's is an adult fantasy romance with some dark elements. The story uses a lot of Arthurian legends as its base. I was looking forward to this book after finishing the first in the series and I was not disappointed. Veyka and Arran are newly bonded and mated and struggling with what that means to them personally. Veyka's new abilities and threats to the kingdom lead the newly crowned High King and Queen to take a quest to the human realm and search for Avalon. I enjoyed the story and relationship development between the characters immensely. Lots of action, secrets and adventures. I can't wait for the next one! Thanks to netgalley for this arc and all views expressed are my own.
"Throne of Air and Darkness" by Emberly Ash continues the gripping tale from the Secrets of the Faerie Crown series, picking up right where the first book left off with Veyka's mysterious disappearance. This installment delves even deeper into the struggles of fighting for love amidst adversity. Themes of redemption, fate, and healing from past trauma are explored with a darker tone and mature content, so be sure to check the content warnings. The story features a fierce, protective female lead, intense court politics, a found family dynamic, and representation of mental health, all wrapped up with a compelling romance and a plus-size heroine.
I undoubtedly love the characters and their intricate relationships. The author crafts these characters so vividly that you can’t help but become deeply invested in their journeys and connections. The romance between the main characters is beautifully complex, filled with angst and raw emotion that makes it feel genuine and impactful. Cyara, in particular, has captured my heart—trust me, you’ll understand why if you read it.
While character development is at the forefront, it's also worth noting the story is also driven by a gripping and mysterious plot. The unfolding events surrounding Arthur’s death and the prophecy keep you guessing and engaged. The pacing is dynamic, with plenty of twists to keep you hooked. Be prepared for a cliffhanger ending that will leave you reeling— I was left emotionally overwhelmed, knowing it would be a tough finish but still completely caught off guard.
*Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the ARC.
I really enjoy the story line in this series. I have noticed a bit of spelling mistakes that should have been picked up. But all in all it was a great story and I can’t wait to find out what happens next in this series
