Druid Detective Agency #2

Roundtable Nights

Rate this book
What if all your nightmares came true?

The "mare" used to be contained in people's dreams. Now, it takes flesh when you wake.It disappears as soon as it completes its task...

...killing its host.

How can I possibly catch or kill a monster that only emerges from one's sleep?

I can't figure out how it's choosing its victims.

There's not a thread I can follow to figure out who it will strike next. My only chance to beat the monster will be to lure it into my dreams and kill the damned thing before it gets away.

There's no guarantee the mare will take the bait.

But if I don't kill it soon, more people will die. And it won't stop until it destroys everyone.

Roundtable Nights is the second book in the new Druid Detective Agency urban fantasy series. Elijah and Emilie already went through one adventure. Now, ten years after The Druid Legacy, they are facing a new challenge, one that will test their limits. The real threat isn't the otherworldly magic, the magic that once birthed life itself in Eden/Annwn. There was a reason why humanity was cast from the garden groves. When the magic of that place comes home, it won't take long to find out why. The real threat was here all along, hidden in human hearts, now made manifest by the power of creation itself.

Harry Potter meets Harry Dresden in Druid Detective Agency.

You'll encounter dragons and other mythical creatures. Facing them is nothing compared to fighting with monsters born of the human mind.

Theophilus Monroe is a fantasy author with a knack for real-life characters whose supernatural experiences speak to the pangs of ordinary life. After earning his Ph.D. in Theology, he decided that academic treatises that no one will read (beyond other academics) was a dull way to spend his life. So, he began using his background in religious studies to create new worlds and forms of magic-informed by religious myths, ancient and modern-that would intrigue readers, inspire imaginations, and speak to real-world problems in fantastical ways.

This is another book of a series that is fabulously written and so full of action and adventure. Monroe has wrapped the elements of the paranormal in with the mystery and action to create a most delightful and entertaining tale.

3.5 stars. Sloan and Ned are good additions to the team as they battle Corvus, Mordred and his acolytes The story takes place in about a 24 hour time span so it’s quick and almost all action. Betrayals, nightmares, name it, the team battles it all to defeat Mordred a second time.

Wow, I absolutely adore this series, it’s fantasy that’s right up my street. This authors mind must be full of stories percolating through it all the time. I loved it. I cannot wait for book three, to see what happens next. It’s sure to be a right cracker. Highly recommended.

Young Merlin’s fears are played upon again in this storyline, as the Druid Detective Agency (DDA) suddenly start to get cases from him posting their business on social media. One is the wife of a man attacked in his bed by a Sasquatch, another a man who had all his teeth removed by his manic dentist as he slept! The dark ether that was released as part of the Weavers attempts to resurrect Mordred, is continuing to affect people’s dreams, bringing all their worst nightmares t life. These ‘mares’ would normally disappear as soon as a person woke up, but now they have a more solid presence and can kill people! It is almost impossible to know where one of these creatures will appear next, as they are purely a figment of someone’s nightmares. They contact the first man’s best friend, Ned, who is looking for his friend’s attacker and his skills will useful to the DDA, with him becoming another employee as such of the agency by the end. Sloane is working full time with the agency since being pushed out on mental health leave by the local police force due to some of what she saw and her attempts to keep others away from a dangerous situation in the park. A new addition to the household is a talking cat, who tells them he has come to help Merlin and that he is in fact Sir Percival of the Knights of the Round Table and had been sent by Arthur and the older Merlin!

Merlin has a horrible dream that he struggles to wake from, which allows him t see many of these creatures chained in basements of houses nearby, all calling for him to help them, but another creature pulls him in and this one is far more evil than the others and he hears a voice telling him that Mordred is coming for him. Sir Percival tries to get him to talk about his dream, but in the end, he wakes up his parents a dn tells them all about it. This leads to them calling Sloane, who they soon hear being attacked by a horde of vampires, which was apparently what she had been dreaming of before she was woken up. Elijah has to teleport to her house to try and save her, but her dream of vampires doesn’t follow normal vampire lore, making it harder to kill or stop them. They can also tell exactly where the person who had the nightmare that produced them is, at all times, and soon follow to attack again. They won’t stop until the person is dead! Before Elijah can get Sloane to safety, the police turn up and arrest her for shooting these vampire creatures. Something about her being arrested and the police not even bothering to check out the bodies or the crime scene, bothers Elijah and he goes home to discuss it with his wife, Emellie. Ned is also being pursued by a nightmare of his own making, but this one is rather more ridiculous and sillier, but still deadly. They realise that Sloane needs to be rescued from the police cell before the vampires return to kill her and any innocent people in the police station, and they use Emelie’s bardic powers to show them where Sloane is. Whilst he is off trying to rescue her, Merlin suggests using Emelie’s powers to see if they can find out anything else, but he gets stuck in his nightmare and this allows Mordred to come through.

Elijah and Merlin will end up having to try and fight Mordred and his minions, which include several key powerful people in this town, as the threat to Merlin and his future role as gatekeeper are put in danger by Mordred’s presence. The Weavers haven’t given up, but hopefully they can destroy this dark ether Mordred before he can be fully resurrected and be too powerful for them to stop. If they don’t stop the mares being fed dark ether, more people will die and the nightmare scenarios will just continue to grow. The very power of creation was distorted by the Weavers and used for evil purposes, without a care about how many innocents would be hurt and killed. Merlin is now the holder of the mantle of the Vesica Piscis, passed on to him by their last Adept, Alessandro, shortly before he died. Merlin’s future self’s magical path has been awakened and many will step in his way to stop him. This is not the last time he and his parents will face adversity, but they will be ready to face whatever comes their way and are slowly building some associates who can help them navigate the dangers. I can’t wait to see what the next adventure will entail and I presume Sir Percival will be key, from its title.

I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Fear is a strange emotion, sometimes rational but most times not, nevertheless, fear is what brings about nightmares, where you wake up in the middle of the night, heart pounding, only to realise it wasn't real. Who hasn't had nightmares at some stage in their lives but when these nightmares manifest into REAL creatures, this would be a cause for major concern, a living nightmare running rampant through a community. Yeah, not fun...see, in the previous book, an ancient sect was trying to bring about change, eliminate any threats, namely Elijah and Merlin, and usher in a new world order, with Mordred at the helm. Thankfully, THAT was thwarted but a darkness leaked through the ether, this darkness is now preying on those who have fears. And the race is on to prevent an event from occuring, to weed out the traitors and eliminate the mares before real damage is done!

Elijah and Emilie decided to open up a Druid Detective Agency, to deal with just such unbelievable things that are oh so believable. Sloan, no longer a detective on the police force, well, SHE decides to force herself as part of the team, aiding Elijah and Emilie. And then there Ned who somehow ended up in the mix of helping.... he's a complete hoot! What comes out of his overenthusiastic mouth, well, you won't believe it til you've read it! His bumbling reasoning and actions had me in stitches! An unlikely ally, but an ally none the less. Enter an even more unlikely character and the stage is set for an action filled, at times hilarious but all times exciting read! Fighting nightmares with a cokoo guy, an ex detective on the force, an adolescent Merlin and a cat....see what I mean? Although, I do think Ned was the highlight, for me, in this book. I hope we get to see more of him.

The first book in this series didn't have the tongue in cheek humour I so associate with this author but did he ever bring it back in this book! When a cat appears and starts talking to Elijah, yes....a cat ... well, there it was, my snorting began! This is a special cat though, he's not TECHNICALLY a cat, just happens to be in cat form and he's fighting fit! As always, a fast immersive read, one that draws on all the elements I find engaging, with characters I can relate to. Starting with Merlin, a wizard of immense proportions, a Wizard who's lore I've loved since a child, brought back to life in a unique way. I love how true to age the author describes him, yet gives us inkings of the magnificent wizard he'll become. Elijah and Emilie are firm favourites and I'm nurturing a soft spot for Sloane now too. She's shaping up as a really cool badassed addition to this unusual detective agency. So, if you need your nightmares 'tended to' you don't need the Ghostbusters, you just have to call the Druid Detective Agency! Another awesome read by an awesome author.

I like this book better then the first one of this series, Merlins mantle. It seems the characters are more settled now.  When I started this one, I heard it was strongly recommended that one should start this series at the beginning. But maybe I am the odd one out since I think that one could also drop in in this part of the story if that was the only one available, thanks to the descriptive writing style of the author.

Elijah Wadasworth, the main character and narrator in part one, in the beginning lectures a little too much on the balance between nature and mankind to my taste. But since he is a druid and closely connected to nature, he is forgiven ;) I like the fact that he and his companions are, quite a mixed lot and not perfect but fallible and some of them human. It makes the team easier to relate to.

The druid detective agency now really starts to run. Partly because of the phenomenon that was left over from the adventures in the previous book, it can't touch Merlin anymore but now seems to be drawn to humans with magic potential.

The supporters of their defeated enemy from the previous book, are also stirring. So the maincharacrers Elijah, Emilie, and Sloane ( a cop who has been forced to take a leave of absence) have to face two kinds of problems, nightmare monsters created by the phenomenon and people's imagination ( and believe me in this book the night mares are quite varied) and a well funded  organization. Or are they really not that separate at all? Or is something else going on since the monsters seem more corporeal then expected. The story keeps you on your toes. Fortunately there are some small funny things like a helper, Sir Percival, a round table knight, send towards the future by Merlin (when he had traveled back to Arturian times) who does not really arrive at the time and form that he was supposed to.

Sir Percival, or Percy, takes over the narrative for part two, which is kind of funny. Then we leap to yet another but unexpected narrator. The switch of narrators brings me the sensation of movie scenes and brings more insights into what is really going on in several places. ( Normally this could only be achieved by using an all- knowing narrator style)

I really like how the story builds tension and ends with a epic battle and is never clearly predictable. I am looking forward to reading the next adventure of the team of the druid detective agency

Roundtable Nights is the second book in the Druid Detective Agency by Theophilus Monroe. I thought the first book in the Druid Detective Agency was the best but then I hadn’t read Roundtable Nights book two either. This series just gets better with each book or more like turn of the page.

Like Merlin’s Mantle, Roundtable Nights starts off with a blast and never lets up from the first page until the last. The twists and turns just keep on coming page after page. I couldn’t believe what was happening I was kept in suspense on every page. I mean there were so many twists I was kept on the edge of my seat as I raced to the end watching as they unraveled.

Monsters were appearing right out of nightmares and becoming real. Once their victim awoke the nightmares became flesh and blood. Elijah Wadsoworth a Druid and his wife, Emilie a Bard and their son Merlin, who run the Druid Detective Agency are trying to find a way to stop the nightmares from becoming real. But how do you fight a nightmare?

After the mare leaps from a nightmare and becomes real by taking over its host body and completing its mission the host dies. How can you stop something that you have no idea where or when is going to strike next?

Come join Elijah, Emilie, and their son Merlin on this thrilling and epic journey as they fight the fear that haunts nightmares!

I highly recommend Roundtable Nights to anyone who loves a good mystery along with some magic! Grab a copy of Roundtable Nights today and join the fun!

Theophilus Monroe and his eclectic cast of characters have solidified their place as one of my top literary indulgences. Once again, Monroe delivers a captivating and skillfully crafted narrative in the second installment of his Druid Detective Agency series. His adeptness at seamlessly blending different genres is on full display, making for an enthralling reading experience.

With each turn of the page, Monroe's storytelling prowess draws you deeper into the world he has created. From the very beginning, you'll find yourself engrossed in a tale that is equal parts drama, suspense, and thrills, with generous servings of paranormal and supernatural intrigue. And let's not forget the touches of humor and even a dash of horror, adding layers of depth to the narrative.

The characters Monroe has crafted are so vivid and compelling that they feel like old friends, and their adventures keep you hooked until the very end. The writing itself is nothing short of superb, effortlessly transporting readers into the heart of the story.

As I eagerly await the next installment, "Grail of Power," I have no doubt that Monroe will continue to enchant readers with his imaginative storytelling. For anyone seeking an immersive and thrilling read, I wholeheartedly recommend diving into the Druid Detective Agency series. Thank you, Theophilus, for yet another fantastic book!.

Roundtable Nights is the second book in the Druid Detective Agency series. It covers a lot and provides an interesting take on the Knights of the Roundtable. The storyline draws the reader in from the first page, and you will not want to put the book down. There is drama, suspense, thrills, lots of paranormal-supernatural action, surprises, a lot of humor, and even some horror.

Young Merlin is proving why he will become the greatest sorcerer of all time, and his parents are doing what any parent would do and are making sacrifices to protect their child. Their way with Merlin is one of the attractions of the story. You must admire that they are trying to keep the world safe and raise a child with a vast legacy. We can see the burden on them as they navigate many different conflicts and challenges and still allow him to be a kid. Their feet are in the present but also dealing with the past and the future.

Theophilus Monroe can get our complete buy-in to the storyline. He is a master at effortlessly mixing different genres, which is quite evident in the Druid Detective Agency series. I can hardly wait for book three!

The second story in the Elijah Wadsworth 'Druid Detective Agency' (DDA) series by Theophilus Monroe is a step up in quality on the first one, which was lacklustre in contrast to other books of his (cf. the Bloodwitchery or Chronicles of Zoey Grimm series). Here, Monroe is clearly finding his element and has added in some of his more typical humour, via the introduction of a classic red-neck American and a talking cat.
"Roundtable Nights" is a conclusion to the first story arc begun in book 1, with Mordred's supporters playing a major role again. There isn't so much by way of detecting, despite the DDA moniker, but we get character development this time alongside the action. Particularly entertaining is a scene involving vampires that is quite unlike Monroe's usual treatment of the bloodsuckers.
Definitely looking forward to the third entry in the series and, perhaps, some detecting and, maybe, some Sasquatch, after all if Bigfoot's good for Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden, it's gotta be worth it for Elijah, family, friends and associates!

How do you hunt a creature that only appears in dreams? Why, invite it into your dream and hope you win. Yeah, there might be a flaw or two in that plan.

This is book two of the series, but it is written as a standalone. No prior reading is required to enjoy this book.

This is an urban fantasy story featuring a druid detective agency in the modern world. The story is well written and fairly easy to read. The setup is excellent, but takes a bit of effort to wrap your head around the first time. The characters are well developed and quite skilled, which is good as they have their work cut out for them. The plot moves at a good pace and includes plenty of twists and turns to keep this interesting. Overall, I am really enjoying this series and look forward to seeing what comes next.

Highly recommended.

Most people have nightmares, usually they disappear when you wake up. But what happens when they dont disappear when you wake up !! The obvious answer is...you get in touch with the Druid Detective Agency run by Elijah and Emilie Wadsworth, Merlin their son (yes that Merlin) and ex detective Sloane to figure it all out. Then you get an Ozark tracker named Nedley Mandigo IV who is hilarious coming on board and last but not least to get in on the action you have Sir Percival a Knight of the Roundtable that has sadly come back as a cat, but he can talk to Elijah, Emilie and Merlin, he is sooo funny, with his cat like antics but with humas traits as well. Will they figure out how and why the creatures of the nightmares are being created and who is behind it.
If you want an action packed read but with humour a plenty, then this series is for you.

The parent of the Great Wizard Merlin, Elijah and Emilie are task with the job of keeping the juvenile sorcerer alive and well. His arch nemesis, Mordred has gone back to the future with the sole goal of exterminating the whelp before he can go back in the past to ruin his life in Camelot. Mordred like all true villains arrived ahead of time to establish multiple organizations to aid him in the extermination process. Even after Mordred has been defeated, and banished, said organizations are still in play to bring him back to finish the job. Elijah and his dutiful sidekicks are run ragged trying to keep up with the different kind of nightmares made flesh whose sole goal is to terrorize and kill unsuspecting innocents in a morbid plan to bring back Mordred so that he can accomplish his task.
This book is filled with non-stop action, and I highly recommend it.

Bigfoot and psycho dentists?

With the dark ether under control, the Druid Detective Agency doesn’t exactly have cases lining up at their door. Then the calls started coming in. Sasquatch kidnappings, psychotic spirit dentists, and other “strange” things are cropping up all over town. These new manifestations are disturbingly solid and deadly. Elijah and Sloan must protect the city from them while Emilie protects Merlin. The Mordredans haven’t given up. Their pockets are deep, their power is far-reaching, and their plot is insidious.

This book hooked me from the first page. Fast action, weird monsters, and surprising twists make this an excellent addition to the series. I received a free copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

The newly formed D.D.A. starts out strong due to Merlin’s tech savy and putting an ad on Instagram. Cleaver little guy!
Their first two cases are hum dingers. They involve Bigfoot and a psycho dentist that removed a man's entire mouth of teeth! How horrific. Two missing men are in the mix as well.
While Elijah's out hunting for Ned, the 2nd missing man, he finds him but then they immediately encounter a pack of wolves that can merge to become on giant wolf. Vampires even come into play later.
The comic relief that all Mr. Monroe's books have, come in the form of Ned and another new character, Sir Percival. Those two will have you busting out laughing.
A lot happens in this book so you don't want to pass it up. I HIGHLY recommend it and it's definitely ONE CLICK WORTHY.

Roundtable Nights (Druid Detective Agency #2)
by Theophilus Monroe (Goodreads Author)

I wish that I had started this series with Book 1. Starting with Book 2, I definitely feel like I missed a lot of the setup, introduction to characters, and background.

Some of the comments, "jokes", etc. seemed crass or cruel, and some felt inappropriate for a YA book.
That left me somewhat disappointed in this book when I was so excited when I saw the words "Druid", "King Arthur", "Merlin", and magic.

I'll go back and read Book 1 in this series; maybe that will give me a different perspective on this book. Otherwise, this book will probably get donated to a library.
On a positive note, it was a very quick read. I started and finished in one day while traveling.

A New Spin on Nightmares.
Continuation from book 1, Elijah and his family with the help of Detective Sloane Harding are battling the remnants of the Mordred fallout. Case after case gets more ludicrous, Elijah gains two more team members hillbilly hunter Nedley “Ned” Mandigo IV and a cat - former Knight of the Round Table, Sir Percival. Newest source of this chaos are Mares short for nightmare creatures that feed on fear from the ether. Drama, intense moments, magic and comedic moments tell the story of this latest tale in DDA: Druid Detective Agency. Bad guys are dealt with and good guys win.

Fighting their Nightmares

Another fun read from Theophillus Monroe; full of fast paced drama, action, nightmares and magic. With plenty of humor, twists and turns this is a great read and one I would recommend.

After defeating Mordred, things at the Druid Detective Agency seem to have gone quiet, until two strange but very different cases land in their laps. Ones where their client's nightmares are becoming reality.

Elijah, Emilie, Merlin and Sloane gain some new allies while working out who is at the bottom of these nightmare cases and how they can be stopped before more people are killed.

Now that the bad guy is defeated things can go back to normal right... but of course that never happens and Elijah and Emilie are back fighting the bad guys. But first they must figure out what is going on and how all the pieces fit together. These two find partners to help and bad guys to defeat. A great story that drew me in and had me laughing and guessing what might happen next. Had to see what secrets and surprises would pop in next. Just a fun easy story to read with drama, danger, and great characters.

Roundtable Nights was a really fun book to read. I loved getting to know the characters better, both their abilities and their personalities. The story was engrossing and had some unexpected moments- very hard to put down. This is a great book for when you want something to relax with. I highly recommend this book for fantasy fans who enjoy the legend of Merlin, although I would definitely start with the first book in the series to get the most out of it.

as Merlin, family and friends face off with living nightmares - AGAIN, new friends, foes, and allies are revealed, along with shifting balances in power

in fighting darkness without and within, hearts and inner elements might make a difference, alongside perceptions and beliefs, especially in family instead of hunger for power

desperation to reach expected end goals sometimes have devastating results

reimagining past, future and allegiances looks to be a challenging but fun to read undertaking

Roundtable Nights (Druid Detective Agency Book 2), my sixty-third read from author Theophilus Monroe. Theophilus Monroe & his cast of crazy characters have become one of my favorite reads. Another well written & enjoyable read, the second in his new Druid Detective Agency series. I was given a Kindle copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Grail of Power (Druid Detective Agency Book 3) when it's published on May 13, it's already on my TBR list. Received as an ARC, I am leaving my honest review. Suspense and tension is high as nightmare creatures become more real, more dangerous and the key to re resurrecting Mordred. Merlin gets a reincarnated protector from the Round Table, but how effective will he as a cat? Their hands are full as a vision Merlin has, points to a devious dark plot that has his parents thinking outside the box. Gripping with nail biting moments and fast paced action, this second installment will keep you reading from the first page til the last

Never content with the simple, Mr. Monroe's books are normally filled with a cornucopia of otherworldly figures. "Roundtable Nights" is no exception. Literally the stuff of nightmares, he takes readers into the depths of insanity. When people's nightmares become reality, and magicians from ancient history return to life, you have to ready for anything. When walking down the alleys of New York City in the middle of the night, things that go "bump" are likely to hurt you ... and in this series, those things might be worse than what New York has to offer.

Elijah, Emilie, Merlin, and Sloane are joined by two new members of the Druid Detective Agency who help them with their latest - and literal - nightmare situation.

How well will Sir Percival, a Knight of King Arthur's Round Table, and Nedley Mandigo IV, an Ozark tracker, fit into the growing Agency?

Will they figure out who and what are behind the nightmares and stop the plot in time?

Theophilus Monroe has set his readers up for another rollercoaster ride!

Awesome read

Being the parents of The Merlin is a lot. With the help of Detective Sloan they are all working on the aftermath of Mordred's release of the dark ether that is making nightmares real. The reincarnation of Sir Percival arrives in the most hilarious form. There are a ridiculous amount of puns in the book as well as hilarious one liners that had me giggling like a maniac for over half the book. The fight scenes were great and I can't wait to read the next book!

I didn't know what to expect when I first started this series but I'm starting to really like it. Plus I don't think Freddy has nothing on these nightmares. Maybe Elijah needs to ask the trees for some leaves every time he transforms. Ned and Sir Purr-cival are a couple of funny additions to the group. I'm just trying to figure out how do you have nightmares about something that you really don't think too much about.

thought that this was a well written (like all of his books are of course) and well researched (ditto) and really loved the additions of the 2 new additional characters to the series especially Sir Percival (slight spoiler here) and making him a talking cat that only Merlin and his parents can understand is genius can't wait to dive into book 3 which is waiting for me already.

Fast paced witty but with some adult humor, PG13. Mystery, meets fantasy world. Addicting. Definitely worth the read if that sounds up your alley.

Dragon, sastquash, druid, mares, gate keeper, knight of the round table returns as a cat, enemy number 1, secret society, corrupt police force, murder, nightmares brought to life, brought back to life, will evil win?.

The agency is growing.
Nightmares manifest as real-life monsters and the rush is on to fix things with the help of a knight of old. If that weren't enough, prepare for the irreverent comedy that is Ned. This hillbilly will keep you in stitches. As always, full of action, danger, and intrigue. A great read.
