I won't go into the full rant I did for the first book, The Monster of Farallon Islands - you can read all that under that review. Although I will repeat some here.
I am glad I read this book first before reading it to my son - which I did not. Again, my rant is Lane Walker state's he was/is a Principal and Educator and these books are for boys to show morals, good choices, and the like. Not. That is my disappointment in each of these. It does not need to be a Timmy and Lassie feel good, but in each book poor choices are made and these would be OK if they were addressed and the right or better choices were mentioned.
Four boys go on a river rafting/camping trip over Halloween weekend. (Alarm Buzzer Sounding). First, what parents would permit this, considering the age of the boys...and let me remind you, these are in no way comparable to the Stand by Me, don't mess with me boys. Next, one of the boys can't swim (Alarm Buzzer Sounding). Now that may be OK to some extent, except recent rains have the river swollen and dangerous. "Son, yes you may go on a dangerous raft trip on a swollen river (at night) even though you can't swim" said no mother ever to her son. Then add in the crazy (cliche) man with the hook legend, and you'll scare the barjeepers out of my son if I had read it to him!
Boo!
