The Players #3

Playing to Win

Rate this book
Ready to fall for the ultimate player? Check out the latest sports romance by New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy...
Ace Townsend is the biggest player on campus.
The sexy new quarterback on the football team.
I should probably mention he's also a complete flirt. The life of the party wherever he goes.
Someone I should avoid at all costs.
It's difficult though, when I'm on the social media crew for the football team and we're out on the field during practice almost every day, filming them. On the sidelines at games. Hanging out with them at bars. The more I spend time with Ace, the more I'm drawn to him. The attraction is there, but it's more than that. I actually like him. We have a connection, and he definitely feels it too. The problem?
I signed a contract when I started on the social media team with a 'no dating athletes' clause. They're strictly off limits. If we get caught together? It's cause for my immediate termination. I love my new job and don't want to risk it, but I'm falling for Ace.
Hard.
We're all for sneaking around and keeping our growing relationship secret, but it's starting to wear on us. Ace is determined to win me at all costs, though he doesn't want to be the reason I lose my job, but...
Maybe the two of us being together is worth the risk.

When Ruby Maguire switches colleges to Colorado University for their sports marketing program, she has no idea how hard it will be to dodge Ace Townsend, starting quarterback.

There was a lot of push and pull in the beginning with this one. Frankly, it took a little bit for me to join Team Ace. Once he won me over though…

“I have a feeling we’d be really good together.”

I knew from their banter in ‘Playing by the Rules’ that Ace and Ruby would be an intense couple if they had their own book, but I didn’t realize that it would not only be in the sheets, but emotionally as well. These two have some obstacles in their way, *cough* a signed contract *uncough*, but somehow they make it work. What starts off with Ruby reluctant to trust Ace because of his past actions, his fan club, and “good time guy” reputation, ends up being one of the sweetest romances I’ve read. Also, I want to note even though they do have obstacles in their way, other than that their romance is pretty easy breezy and I absolutely appreciated that. Sometimes it’s fun to have lower angst reads.

These two have a secret relationship, but the way Ace treats Ruby is just so sweet. Sigh. Don’t get me wrong, they get hot and heavy too, but you can tell, before they do, that they really do have feelings for each other because of how they act/treat each other. This series has probably been one of my faves from Monica simply because all the heroes have it so bad for the heroine. I know it’s called The Players series, but it could totally pass for The Down Bad Bad series too.

Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys college sports romance with a down bad hero and a heroine who is just a smitten, but also knows how she should be treated. Loved this one, but sort of sad the series is over.

A year ago, I read my first book by Monika and fell in love❤️ Then I didn't even expect that a year later I would receive ARC. My happiness can’t be described in words.
Thank u so much🥰

I’m a huge fan of sports and sports romance’s. I can't even count how many sports romance’s I've read. But I can definitely say that this series has a special place in my heart. I’m obsessed with every character in this series. Reading this series made me feel like a member of the Maguire family. It's hard for me to say goodbye to them, so I don't do it because I'm sure I'll reread these books more than once🥹

Ruby and Ace>>>>
These characters are so comfortable for me. I adore their relationship. And I just want all of us to find our own Ace Townsend. This man is what all girls need! He really went from the biggest player on campus to a men who obsessed with his girlfriend🤌🏼

“I’m in it to win you.”

What I like about Ruby is her intelligence, confidence and how she goes after what she wants. She’s so sweet and funny😍

And now I know that I will definitely read books about Owen Maguire and the Callahans.

Thank u so much to Monica Murphy (sure for writing amazing books) and Valentine pr for sending me an ARC🫶🏼

this was 300+ pages of ace being annoyed that ruby isn’t giving him attention, him flirting with other girls, ruby catching him in the act, and then him trying to make it up to her by doing nothing?? let’s also not forget in the beginning of the book when he calls ruby a “hot piece of ass” and then also calls her very TAKEN sister the same. sir👋. also, how was miss girl not mad that she got fired from her job literally because of him?? i’m sure he could’ve done something to get her job back for her, but no she just didn’t care?? this was also so much spicier than the first two, probably to make up for ace having the personality of a wall. this series lowkey isn’t anything special compared to some of monica’s other books

"I guess I'm a Ruby man."

'' Unless what I'm feeling for Ruby is some sort of disease. Then I'm ill as fuck."

I was dying to read this book. I love this series so much, and the third book was just as perfect as the previous ones.

Ruby and Ace are two incredible characters and I devoured this book in a few hours. I also liked Gwyneth and Eric and I confess I wanted to read more about them ( Monica Murphy please write a short story about them)

Please read this book.

“What are you hoping to win?” she asks, her tone cautious. I go with my gut and answer her. “I’ve already told you this before, Ruby. I’m in it to win you.”

This was a short and sweet read. Ace was a reformed playboy and Ruby was Knox & Blair's bold little sister who has set her sights on him. Ace was kind of cocky in the beginning but got humbled by Ruby real quick and then he was whipped. I enjoyed reading this book but there isn't anything much that happens plot wise and it was very cliche. Though it was a page turner and I read it in one sitting. So if you're in the mood for a quick, fun and lighthearted college football romance, you should definitely read this series! Overall it was a 3.25 star read for me.

If you’re a fan of the Reformed Play Boy trope, then this book is definitely for you!! (I honestly forgot how much I loved that trope until I read this book)

I know I’ve said this time and time again, but Monica Murphy has done it again!!

Playing to Win is the third book in The Players series, it follows Ace and Ruby’s story. It’s a College Football, Forced Proximity, Forbidden Romance (god that was a mouthful!).

I just love the duality of Monica Murphy’s writing, how she can give us a series full of rich prep school kids with loads of spice, and then give us hot and spicy college sports romances (also, with loads of spice). It’s amazing!

Anywho! Back to Playing to Win, this book has got to be my favourite in the series I just loved Ace and Ruby and the whole forbidden/secret romance. I couldn’t get enough!

Finally, thank you so much to Monica Murphy and Valentine PR for providing me with an ARC of Playing to Win!! I had the best time reading!

“It’s only been you since school started. You’re all I think about. You’re the only one I want.”

Playing to Win is the last installment in The Players series and follows Ruby, the youngest of the Maguire siblings, who we've already met in previous books. She's just transferred to Colorado University and now works for the football team as a part of the social media team, where Ace is the new quarterback. They met at a New Year’s Eve party a few months back and the connection between them was instantaneous. Now that Ruby is part of the team, she can't date Ace, but that won't stop them from flirting and getting closer to each other.

I've been looking forward to Monica Murphy's new release because I really like Ruby, and the glimpse we got of her first meeting with Ace sounded interesting! Their story was very cute and entertaining, and I loved the banter and chemistry between Ruby and Ace. It was a great way to wrap up the trilogy, and the fact that there's no third-act breakup made me love it even more!

Ruby has struggled several times to find a major, but she feels good at Colorado University and even more so on the social media team. She is confident, smart, very funny, and probably one of my favorite heroines by the author. Because of her family, she isn't interested in dating a football player, but she can't resist Ace's charm, even if she tries to. Ace is the football team's new quarterback. He is also a player outside of the field, confident, and sweet. Even if Ace is 100% focused on football and wants to play in the NFL, he's been obsessed with Ruby since their first meeting and can't stop thinking about her.

The attraction and chemistry between Ruby and Ace were off the charts and can be felt page after page. They can't stay away from each other and decide to start a secret relationship since they're not allowed to date. There's a lot of longing and angst between Ruby and Ace with so many secret touches and glances that made me swoon! The steamy scenes were well-written too, and I loved them together a lot.

What I also loved were the few scenes with Natalie and Derek. I thought they were so cute together! Overall, I really enjoyed this trilogy and its characters. Blair and Camden remain my favorite couple of the three, and I hope we see more of them, the rest of the Maguires and the Callahans in the future. I can't wait to see what Monica Murphy has in store for us!

thank you to monica murphy and valentine pr for the chance to arc read!

When I requested this arc it was because I had been on a sports romance kick, and Monica was a familiar author. And I am so glad I did.

Once I got approved for the arc I decided to go ahead and read the first two books in this trilogy (these are all available on ku!!) and quickly found out that these were the kids of another couple in a previous series she had written. I am so glad for it because after this series I definitely am going to need more Monica Murphy in my life.

Ace Townsend is the typical player, hotshot football player who is pretty content to have a different woman every night. I mean hey, they’re coming to him! He doesn’t even have to try. He has a whole fan club of women jumping for the chance to get with him. What else could a 20 year old man want?

Ruby Maguire enters the picture and shit if she doesn’t lock that man down without him even realizing it. Ruby is who every girl wants to be but won’t admit it: the one that takes him from a player to a one woman man.

Ruby is intelligent and funny, and after she gets a job with the football team’s social media she is shoved into Ace’s space and they just can’t stay away from each other, with one major issue: Ruby signed a contract that states she can’t be “involved” with anyone on the team.

Playing to Win was such a fun romance with the man we all wanted in college, a fun, flirty, and sexy guy that only wants you and can’t get enough of you.

In the craze of sports romances right now, the Maguire trilogy is the PERFECT read. And Ace Townsend is arguably the most lovable man of the series. I mean that man was down for *anything*.

I cannot wait to go down the rabbit hole of Monica’s backlist and read the story of Owen Maguire and how we got the Maguire siblings.

4.25 stars and a definite read for my football romance lovers!

How to even begin 🤧 My mood while reading this book was ‘There is nothing like a mad woman, what a shame she went mad. No one likes a mad woman, you made her like that.’ Female mc Ruby was so fucking unique. She was wearing shirts that said ‘future milf’ and ‘I was born fucking cool’ 😭 Give me a break. And male mc Ace was a walking red flag. Manslut and objectifying women and too full of himself. ‘I watch her, wondering if she is hormonal or about to start her period or whatever. She seems preoccupied and unusually hungry.’ Excuse you Ace. How toxic can a fictional man be 😭

➴ my thoughts.
this series kinda doesn’t stand out compared to monica’s other stuff. it wasn’t terrible, just a bit boring — not much really happened. it worked as a decent distraction, but i skimmed through a lot of it because it didn’t pull me in. everything moved super fast, like one second they’re barely dating and the next they’re saying “i love you,” which felt super unearned.

˖˚⊹ ౨ৎ ruby.
i actually liked ruby’s personality and how ace helped her feel more confident, but the way she handled losing her job was so weird. she spent the whole book stressing over how dating him could ruin everything, and when it finally does, she just… shrugs? no anger, no frustration — like girl, you just got fired over this man and didn’t even blink. you’d think ace could’ve stepped in to help or something, but nope, she just moved on like it was nothing.

˖˚⊹ ౨ৎ ace.
ace came off like a chill guy who didn’t take much seriously. the story briefly touched on some issues with his family, but then completely dropped it — which sucks because that could’ve made him feel more real. instead, it was just 300+ pages of him being moody when ruby didn’t give him attention, flirting with other girls, ruby catching him, and him trying to fix it by literally doing the bare minimum. also, calling ruby and her very taken sister “hot pieces of ass” was such a gross way to introduce him.

˖˚⊹ ౨ৎ the romance.
honestly, their relationship didn’t feel deep at all. if there was a follow-up story set a few years later, i don’t see them still being together. outside of hooking up, they didn’t share much — no real convos about their lives, their goals, or even the future. they snuck around a lot, but like… they could meet her parents for dinner off-campus, so why not actually go on a real date? it felt more like lust than love, which made their big emotional moments kind of fall flat.

ᢉ𐭩 .ᐟ all in all, this book had a few decent moments, but overall the rushed plot, shallow romance, and lack of emotional depth made it pretty forgettable.

This book made me stay up all night to finish it, I loved every book in the “The Players” series so far and this wasn’t an exception. 💋

These books from the series are really a MUST read. 🏈

Monica Murphy is an amazing author that truly writes beautiful masterpieces and if there’s one author you need to read, it’s definitely her. ❤️

This book is about the third sibling, Ruby. She came to Knox and Blair’s school to finish her degree. Ruby sweared off all football players, until she met Axe...

You really follow them get to know each other and he really was head over heels for her.

I really loved all the characters in the series and I'm excited about Monica Murphy's next releases.

You guys I have been impatiently waiting for this release because I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Ace & Ruby’s story! Catching little glimpses of them in the previous book made me so excited to see their story come to life & Monica KILLED it!

Ace is the new upcoming QB1 & Ruby is new to the social media team for the football team. Ruby signed a strict contract that said there would be absolutely NO relationships with anyone on the team but when Ace Townsend keeps trying to get her to date him she eventually has to decide if she wants a chance at love or if she wants to keep a job that she loves that will look great to future employers.

I don’t want to spoil the storyline for you to much so just take my advice & get your hands on this book! Or any book Monica Murphy writes 😂💗

I feel like a three is being generous with this book but it’s mainly for the spicy bits. I enjoy how they do explore their sexuality and kinks together when we do get it. I also liked that there wasn’t a third act breakup even though the conflict at the end was weird.

The whole book is Ruby being afraid to lose her job by dating Ace, but then literally doesn’t care a single bit when that happens 🤣😅. And while reading a book with a manwhore H is the norm, Ace just rubbed me the wrong way with constantly trying to hook up with other women and making comments about their appearance even when he was very much interested in Ruby.

Aside from sex, they don’t do much together, which didn’t help with the connection between them. I know they were hiding their relationship, but they went off campus to go out to eat with her parents, they couldn’t do that for a date? Again I mainly gave this three for the spice since that’s all they had going for them, and it WAS good.

If you’re looking for something with no third act breakup and spice, you’ll probably be able to tolerate this book. Other than that it’s Ace being whiny and Ruby being extremely wish washy.

First, I want to thank Monica Murphy and valentine pr for the chance to ARC read! I love the players series so I was really excited for this one!

I loved this series and so sad it’s over! This is the third book in The Players series following Ruby & Ace. We met Ruby in the other books as Knox & Blair’s younger sister. She just transferred to Colorado University and starting a paid internship within the football program’s social media team. Ruby met Ace at a New Year’s Eve party a few months back and she has mixed emotions regarding Ace.

Ace Townsend is your typical football player, gets all the girls and has a new women every night until he can’t get Ruby out of his mind. Plus he has a dirty mouth on him.

Ruby Maguire is intelligent and funny and confident in her own skin. She goes after what she wants! Who doesn’t love a strong female.

Playing to Win was such a fun quick sports romance and I loved it! I’m so sad it’s over! I highly recommend this series!

I am so grateful to be part of Monica's ARC team! I was lucky enough to read this release early & I am dying for everyone else to read this one! Playing To Win is definitely my favourite of the Players trilogy - Especially because the youngest Maguire truly is the most fun!

- Sports Romance
- College Setting
- Forbidden / Secret Relationship
- FWB to Love
- Instant Chemistry

Ace Townsend is what the woman call, a typical football jock player. With that lovable smile, amazing body & a sense of humour - All girls want a night with him. Except Ruby Maguire.

Ruby doesn't want to fall for a football jerk. She is starting fresh at her siblings college and she wants to make something of herself, not waste her time with a boy. When she is offered a place on the social media team for the football team - She thinks it would be the perfect opportunity to show off her marketing skills. And with the rule of anyone working for the football team not allowed to date any of the players - She says its another reason to accept & stay away from those players. But why can't she get Ace off her mind?

It was so sweet to see Ruby & Ace go from a flirty friendship, to instant connection. I truly connected with both their characters & loved seeing them grow together. Monica is amazing at not bothering with that over dramatic third act break up scene - And she once again continued not to have that scene but to show how much they have grown together. Even if it means Ruby may lose her job, she has found something / someone else she rather hold on to.

4.5/5 stars with 4/5 steam.

I have loved this series so much & I’m so sad it’s over now! This is book #3 in The Players series, following Ruby & Ace. We met Ruby in the other books. She is the youngest Maguire sibling who has just transferred to Colorado University and starting a paid internship with the football program’s social media team. After an intense moment with Ace on New Year’s Eve a few months back, Ruby has mixed emotions about working with the football team & having to be around Ace. But as time goes on, it’s hard for them to deny the connection they have. Only problem? Ruby signed a contract when she started her internship that states she can’t get involved with any players. So what’s she supposed to do when the one man she wants is completely off limits?

Overall, I really enjoyed this story. I absolutely loved the banter & chemistry between Ace & Ruby. The tension was so good & had me hooked from the start. I just wish we got a little more towards the end, it felt a little rushed. But I will say, Ruby & Ace are my favorite couple from this series, hands down. You could just feel the connection they have through the pages & I couldn’t get enough!
