Following the untimely death of his father, Henry Beckwith unwittingly inherits the family business at his mother’s behest. Forced to serve and mingle with the London elite, Henry enters a cold and loveless marriage of convenience in order to uphold the Beckwith family’s newfound societal status.
One day he receives an invitation. Sir Thomas Hadleigh, a young and mysterious baronet whose reputation for the dark and the unusual precedes him, requests Henry’s services for an upcoming party. Curious and desperate for time away from the office, Henry accepts the offer.
What unravels within the accursed walls of Bewcastle Hall is a courtship fueled by forbidden desires, unholy rituals held by a secret society for the queer and the outcasts, and the promise that pleasure and self-fulfillment need not only be found in darkness.

Bt. Ambrose Hearst is an internet chameleon who can be found doing other things under different handles. This specific iteration is an author of queer horror, queer erotica, and queer horror erotica. Either way, things will get messy. He is partial to robots, monsters, and retro aesthetics.
This honestly feels almost like a teaser for a full size novel. I devoured this in one sitting. I saw this off Bsky and I'm not sure if this is the author's debut work but if so, I'm really excited for more.
The overall vibe is really calm, dark, and somber. Henry is super interesting as a protagonist. I love having trans characters in historical media. There's really two ways to go about it. One, everyone can just accept it even though realistically you'd be sent to the sanitorium or forced into your role regardless. Two, navigate society hiding your secret. This one goes with the latter and I'm here for it. Henry's backstory is interesting and I really want to just learn more about him.
The whole thing with Thomas as well was crazy. There's so much that's left unsaid and up in the air. While I love it because it makes your mind race, at the same time, I wanna know so bad what is actually going on.
It's a novella so it is fairly short, took me about an hour to finish. Don't skip the trigger warnings and if it sounds up your alley, then there's no reason to not read this. The ending is a huge cliff hanger that I'm unsure if it'll be resolved but I am sincerely hoping we'll get to see more of Henry and Thomas.
Wow, was this novella absolutely gorgeous! I loved the setting, Victorian England and the dark, Gothic tone of the manor that Henry visits. Henry and his backstory was fascinating to me, being a trans man during that time. I simply wish for his happiness (and more bloody, sexy nights with the mysterious Thomas 🤭). Such a great read!
gothic tale, transmasc mc, mm romance with spice, rich characterization and beautiful writing, i loved how it developed and there was certainly a twist
