This is the first book I've read by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell, and I hope it won't be the last.
Jayna and Liam were both well-developed characters, and I especially enjoyed Jayna's character arc. The supporting cast of characters was great, and I'm hoping the next book in the series is about Avery.
Plenty of action and suspenseful scenes kept me flipping pages. I appreciated that Parnell kept both the romance and language clean.
Overall, I found Hold Your Breath to be an intriguing read that I'd recommend to those who enjoy Christian fiction and romantic suspense novels.
Although this is the second book in a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. This novel tells the faith journey and perilous adventures of travel blogger Jayna Scott. Traveling to the Bahamas, she gets unwittingly trapped into illegal activity there and has to depend on new friends from her Bible study group to help her out. The genre is cozy mystery with a firm faith foundation. The characters are relatable and realistic and the plot moves along at a good steady pace that is engaging and entertaining. I especially enjoyed how Jayna interacted with the Bible study group and really wanted to be a part of it even though she did not feel as though she really belonged. I also liked Liam Bracken’s willingness to be a hero for a young woman he barely knows but who touched his heart. The mystery is just complex enough to keep me on the edge of my seat at times as I cheered for the good guys to get there on time and for the bad guys to be thwarted. This is a feel-good and satisfying read, but readers should be warned that there are triggers like sexual and emotional abuse within the storyline. This is a Christian read with no graphic details or expletives, so I found it suitable for anyone able to read on this level. With a breathtaking setting and an engrossing story, this is one not to be missed for those who enjoy powerful stories with engrossing suspense. Disclaimer Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author as part of her launch team. What a great book! This is the second in the Crossroads series and it did not disappoint!
Jayna is a travel blogger who finds herself mixed up with someone indirectly involved with a drug ring and murder while visiting an island resort in the Bahamas. Through a series of events, she gets to know the young adults from Crossroads Church and learns what true love is because of their selfless love for each other and her, a complete stranger. She also finds the love of Jesus, and He turns her life around.
This is a definite must-read for anyone who loves faith-based cozy mysteries.
Jayna, running for her life on her own terms, accepts an invitation to stay in the Bahamas. There she falls for the owner but doesn't realize the mistake when she accepts his marriage proposal. Everything goes to worse from there.
The dialogue is great, characters with real flaws, and a great plot will keep you on the edge of your seat. An action-packed story with drug runners, a fight for your life, and a tropical setting completes the harrowing tale. I felt this one was even better than the first in the series.
The Christian element is woven into the story and fills the reader with hope, salvation, and a new life filled with God's blessings.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and willingly chose to review it. All opinions are my own.
This was a wonderful sequel to Take My Hand. I enjoyed the characters and how they walked through tough situations. I loved having Reef & Kaley in this book too.
“ For her, Bimini had lost its luster. What had once been a paradise was now her prison.”
Travel blogger, Jayna Scott looks forward to a new start on an island resort in Bimini. But once she discovers her host’s dark secrets she must find a way to escape Mario’s strangling grip or be forced to marry him to save her life and protect her family. I held my breath until the ending pages of this riveting new romantic suspense by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell. It does not disappoint.
Wow! What a fantastic book! If you enjoy books by Lynette Eason and Colleen Coble, you will love this book!
The story is original, and the setting is fantastic! Kristen Hogrefe Parnell brings Bimini, Bahamas to life! I could picture myself breathing in the balmy scent of the ocean!
The characters are wonderful! Jayna is a complex character. She's someone who has looked for love in all the wrong places. She is also strong and likable! Liam is courageous and steadfast. He's a good man to be friends with!
Faith in God is prevalent throughout the book! My favorite quote is: "The nature of God is doing impossible things. Nothing is too hard for Him." I like the emphasis on forgiveness and second chances!
Kristen Hogrefe Parnell is definitely going to be added to my favorite authors list! She's an excellent writer!
I was provided a copy of the book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book has it all! Forgiveness, suspense, romance, and inspirational. This was well crafted with the ups and downs, not knowing what will happen next or if they will get out of that situation. Along with them trusting God with the outcome. I almost felt like I was holding my breath at times; the suspense kept intensifying. I definitely recommend this book.
This was a fast paced book that kept me up almost all night. It was packed full of mystery, romance and nail biting suspense. I loved the scripture references and all of their faith. This was a wonderful series that I wish didn’t end but I’m definitely a new fan of this author.
Beech Mountain, North Carolina emanated pure charm and beauty.
2. What do potential readers need to know most about the main character?
Jayna Scott’s happily-ever-after had suddenly transformed into a harrowing ordeal, forcing her to go into hiding and become on the run.
3. Which supporting character caught your interest the most?
Liam Bracken, the undercover narcotics officer, personified the epitome of “vanilla.” Yet, it was his captivating qualities that irresistibly gravitated me towards him.
4. What journey do(es) the main character(s) take?
Valentina Russo confidently occupied her prison cell, having been convicted of kidnapping, murder, and drug-running charges. Her fellow associate, Casale, had met his demise by hanging after betraying Big Eddie, which further strengthened Valentina’s resolve to keep her secrets sealed. Would Liam be able to expose the criminals and keep Jayna safe?
5. How is the writing style or quality of the writing?
The captivating quality of the writing held my attention for hours. I was compelled to discover the unfolding events, eagerly attempting to unravel their mysteries as I delved deeper into the narrative.
6. (for Christian fiction) Are there spiritual truths to be gleaned from the story?
God is writing each one of our stories. It may be messy, but if we wait on Him and submit to his plan for our lives, he will write a better ending than we ever could.
“I’d like to add that you can’t experience that something better if you don’t know God in the first place. And knowing Him starts by believing He sent His Son Jesus to die in your place and pay the price for all since—past, present, and future. All He asks of us is to believe in Him as our Savior. From there, we begin a daily walk with Him to know Him more and to live for Him.”

9. Is the title memorable and/or emotion-grabbing?
Absolutely! The title and the cover leave me breathless with anticipation.
Disclaimer: I received a copy from the publisher. This in no way affects my review. All thoughts are my own.
So far, at 26% or around page 66 according to KU, we've had a fade-to-black scene between unmarried (but also non-believers) as the FMC isn't a Christian. She has also admitted this isn't uncommon for her, but again, not a Christian.
Also mentions of Captain Marvel, Reckless Love, Ed Sheer*n, B*yonce, 80s 'big hair' rock 'n' roll, and yeah. In the past I've not only DNFed a book, but avoided the author ever since for mentioning N. Min*j, just I can't. It's clear in the Bible that we are to avoid causing others to stumble, and for me directly name-dropping celebrities and big-names casually like this is a form of recommendation, or at least implying that they're worth naming... Does this is any way honor God? Or does it appeal to our senses? This isn't a judgement against anyone, just a conviction of mine that seemed relevant to start here for anyone wondering about my thoughts on this one, and why I'm DNFing it.
I wanted to like this one, but I knew that I read the first in a traditional period of my life. I was lukewarm, I used to listen to songs like reckless love, Skillet, some 80s rock, even a little of Sheer*n's stuff. I was there, it's how I spent much of my life. Until God called me out, into His marvelous Light! I believed I was saved, that I was a 'good Christian' and that Jesus loved me, that He lived in me. I thank God that He opened my eyes to the truth! I was wretched and wicked, thinking myself holy and pleasing to Him when in fact I was actually living according to the flesh. I am forever grateful that He revealed the Lukewarm and putrid condition of my heart and has since been working on me and in me, and that He has put it on my heart to pray for and warn others like me who believe the lies and are at risk of being deeper out of Jesus' mouth when He returns in we don't repent and seek Him daily. Not in a way that is comfortable or accepted by many modern so called 'churches' but the way His disciples did in the Bible. Forsaking ALL to follow Him, laying down self and taking up our crosses DAILY as we learn to live fully for Him. For He alone is worthy, and it's by no other name that we might be saved. Only the true Jesus Christ of the Bible saves, and to know Him, we must be willing to trust and believe in Him fully, to believe He is fully God and Fully man, that He came, was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died a sinless death (while being fully man AND fully God) and on the third day, HE ROSE AGAIN, to rule and reign forever more! Hallelujah! That it the message that saves, and only He has the power to save us. Just as it is written in the Bible, God's Word, so it is. Amen!
I hope this helps someone, and if you're reading this, I'm praying for you too. May the name of Jesus be lifted up and magnified. Let it be all for His glory, amen.

Kristen Hogrefe Parnell does it again in this second book, "Hold Your Breath," in the Crossroads Suspense series! This page-turner is definitely worth the read. This time, we travel from the Bahamas to the mountains of North Carolina and back again. Jayna Scott, a travel blogger, is a former model with a dark past. Bad choices have marked her life, but when the wrong choice leads to being controlled by some very dangerous people, Jayna has nowhere to turn until she meets Kaley Colbert and her friends. Jayna has a ton of baggage, past and present, but with friends like Kaley and private investigator Liam Bracken, can she find her way to a new life? And though Liam is a gringo, Jayna can’t help but be attracted to his “good guy” persona. But is he for real, or is Liam using her like everyone else from her past? Maybe if she can survive the current nightmare, she’ll discover whether he’s legit or not. And if he is . . . maybe his God is too.
Liam Bracken has enough experience in law enforcement to know when someone is in trouble. And, Jayna Scott is in big trouble, but is she the guilty party or an innocent victim? Liam’s attraction to Jayna comes on fast and furious, but he can’t let himself fall for a woman who isn’t available or who might be involved in criminal activity. Activity he’s been investigating.
As in "Take My Hand," this romantic suspense is fast-paced with enough twists and turns to make you dizzy. The lessons woven throughout this story on forgiveness, healing, and redemption are beautiful reminders of our loving and merciful Savior, Jesus Christ. I highly recommend "Hold Your Breath" and can’t wait to read the next book in the Crossroads Suspense series.
Jayna wasn’t just hiding from something - she was terrified of it.
Lots of action, plenty of gorgeous scenery and enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. This well written second book in the Crossroads Suspense series delves into the dark world where illegal choices are made every day. We also have the privilege of learning what we can do to make good decisions - the kind that will bring eternal results.
After the hurricane, the Bahamas had a great deal to do to recover and become the travel destination for tourists. For Mario, the need to repair his family resort led him to make a choice that was going to have permanent consequences. As a travel blogger, Jayna came to help promote the newly renovated resort. As a former model, many of her choices had been less than ideal. How will their decisions stack up in the light of eternity?
An early copy was received through Mountain Brook Ink. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
With an idyllic tropical setting, a deranged drug dealer, and a perilous engagement, Hold YourBreath will have you doing exactly that—right to the end of the book! Jayne Scott is an ex-model and travel blogger with more than a mere suitcase of life-baggage she carries around… why does she have to find love in all the wrong places? Private Investigator Liam Bracken is protective of his broken heart and neck-deep in a narcotics investigation—until Jayna catches his eye and renders him smitten. Crisp dialogue, flawed characters, and an intimate plot are perfect ingredients for this delicious page-turner, and although I also thoroughly recommend the first book in the series, this one can absolutely be read as a stand-alone title. A hiking retreat, an unlikely love match, and a fight to stay alive in paradise—this action-packed adventure has everything for avid fans of Christian romantic suspense. An advanced copy was provided by the publisher—all opinions expressed are my own.
Hold Your Breath has the cleanness I want in my books, plus all the expected twists and surprises of a good romantic suspense novel. Great friend group dynamics, sweet romance and some unique settings kept me turning pages.
There was some grittiness, but nothing that seemed overly harsh or dark to me (though there were backstory mentions of sexual and emotional abuse, which could be potential triggers for some readers). I loved how the relationship between Liam and Jayna grew and how he helped her begin to view men (and life) differently.
I read this author’s YA dystopian series several years ago and enjoyed it. Now I’m hooked on her romantic suspense! I read the first book in this series (Take My Hand) and only waited a few days before picking up Hold Your Breath. I’m looking forward to the third book (Watch Your Back) when it’s available in 2025.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book, but all opinions are my own.
I absolutely love Hold Your Breath! The characters are realistic and relatable. Jayna is such a brave and fearless woman. I loved seeing her grow in her faith throughout this book.
I was hooked from the beginning of this book! I couldn't put it down and was intrigued the entire time. I didn't want it to end. It was definitely a page-turner.
Hold Your Breath is a wonderful book, and I certainly recommend it.
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher. All thoughts and comments are my own.
This suspense grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go until the end. I thought the story was well told with wonderful characters. I loved how the story was gripping and how you didn't want it to end but you wanted to know what happens next. I very enjoyable suspense.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Jayna thinks she has it all, but when things go awry, she gets a second chance at love from an unlikely guy.
But, more importantly, Jayna learns that God has something better for her than what the world offers. This is a great lesson for all of us, and I really like the way this plays out in the story.
Looking forward to reading the next one in the series!!
I enjoyed this second book in the series. It’s always fun when characters you already love make an appearance and this book did not disappoint in that respect. The suspense kept me guessing and turning pages.
The story held my attention from beginning to end. The characters were interesting. I felt like I got to know them. This was a good read. I'm hoping the other writes one more book in this series.
