Veiled Magic

Rate this book
Swanie discovered her ice magic not long ago. To protect herself and her people, her mentors trained her to hide it away from the world. But when her classmate faces brutal bullying, Swanie can’t just sit back and watch it happen. Not when she has the power to stop it.

Vreni heard tales of Teutonic folklore during her childhood, but she never thought a wintry witch would arise out of nowhere and come to her aid. Doesn’t that sort of thing happen only in fairytales? A realm of magic and mystery lurks just beyond Vreni’s reach—and now she’s indebted to a Teuton witch.

*VEILED MAGIC is a story of friendship and romance set during the timeline of ARCANE GATEWAY, the first book in His Name Was Augustin series. This story has a HEA and can be read on its own, though it is best enjoyed alongside the main series.
**Reader Discretion: This book is recommended for adults due to profanity, sexual situations, and bullying

This story follows two characters, Swanie and Vreni. Swanie recently learnt of her ice powers and trains with people her own kind and Vreni discovers she has magic of her own, though she needs help learning to bring it out.

I'm not really sure how to rate this one, considering it's a novella and i don't have any background understanding of the characters from the main series. I've also not read anything else from this author so I had no idea what to expect.

I wasn't a big fan of the whole coming of age theme and the whole discussion about sex (seemed a little too much for a novella) and then the detailed sex sence which confuses me as to what the age range for this should be. I didnt like the almost assault. I cant tell if this is for adult or young adult bc the characters and dialogue sounded less mature.

I kinda don't understand stand the point of the novella. Granted I don't read many of them so that might be why. But it felt like I didn't really have a focus in the story. Like I wasn't sure if it was a love story, a coming of age. This might just be a read this if you are fans of the characters, it will give you some background information.

I will say though, that the writing was good. The characters were consistent and the world seemed interesting.

I was very VERY generously sent a copy of the book by the author - my opinions are my own.

And I have to sas I enjoyed having a look into Vreni's mind in her POVs. She has an interesting family with a loving dynamic, quite liberal for the times I should think, and while it was unfortunate to read about her bullying, her relationship with Stefan is absolutely worth it.

Swanie works really well as a supporting character here, which is interesting considering this novella is part of HER ongoing saga. But this only makes me more determined to forge on.

There were a few interesting stylistic choices regarding how the girls speak, ie not abbreviating anything (have not instead of haven't) which sometimes made it all sound archaic, but otherwise this was a nice little side-trip before continuing on with the main storyline.

I'll be interested to check in with Vreni later in the books!
