Southern Witch #4

Slightly Spellbound

Rate this book
With two kinds of magick at odds inside her and two gorgeous men vying for her attention, Tammy Jo Trask is used to being pulled in opposite directions. But in the latest Southern Witch novel she’ll have to make some serious decisions—like how she intends to stay alive.

Tammy Jo’s romance with the wizard Bryn Lyons is on hold while her ex-husband is in town trying to remind her of the good old days. Choosing between them isn’t easy, and it doesn’t help that a skeletal creature is spying on her, a faery knight is hunting her, and she just made friends with Evangeline Rhodes—a rich witch who thinks her own family is trying to kill her.

When Evangeline disappears under suspicious circumstances, Tammy Jo is determined to find out what happened. As she uncovers a secret more dangerous—and personal—than she could have imagined, she also discovers that, in both love and magic, you can’t stay neutral forever.

This is the 4th in the Southern Witch series by Kimberly Frost. I got it as a First Read giveaway. Its not my typical genre, but I was completely won over by it not far into the story. Its easy to enjoy, with likable writing about her characters, a half witch, half fairy who loves to bake, and her warlock lawyer love interest, Bryn who is a hottie, and also she's still torn with indecision over her ex, hunky cop Zach. Plus someone seems to be trying to kill her, among other things, plenty to keep it interesting.

This was a difficult book to rate. Did I enjoy the story? Very much. I've already started the fifth book in the series. So what's the deal?

Well...I'll tell you. When I started book one, it kind of set it up as some jealousy with Tammy's ex-husband and the new wizard love interest. I thought, "I can handle this. Jealousy, okay. I can do that." Little did I know that by book two it would morph into a full-fledged love triangle.

I should confess that I HATE love triangles with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. If it's a case of one party thinking the other is dead, or lost forever and they move on only to discover their first love is still alive and available, I'll tolerate it if it's an otherwise good story. But if it's a matter of the MC spending one night with new love interest and then the next with her ex, I'm irritated. Call it a love triangle if it makes you feel better, but to me that's straight up cheating.

So, no. I probably shouldn't have read this series. But I started it and I want to see how it ends. So I settled with a 3 star rating and will rate the characters individually.

5 stars- Mercutio, the world's most clever ocelot
4 stars- Bryn. I am team Bryn even though I feel bad for Zach. Bryn's a great guy and a great wizard and he and Tammy would make a great couple, except for the fact that she doesn't deserve him.
3.5 stars- Zach. I didn't like how Edie and he got together and conspired against Bryn and I wish he would just walk out of Tammy's life once and for all. You know the whole town is talking about you behind your back and how Tammy is making a fool out of you and Bryn both.
2 stars- Edie. Quit trying to interfere in Tammy's love life. And conspiring with Zach is so wrong. Get over your hate of the candylegger. He's not so bad.
1 star- Tammy Jo and her two-timing ways.

This is fourth in a series and like many Urban Fantasy stories, it relies heavily on relationships and characters established in previous books. So you really do benefit from reading in order.

It has been six years since I read the previous book, Halfway Hexed, which was only about a year after its release. This book came some years later and I've only recently realized it was a follow-on of the stories I'd enjoyed before. At least part of that is because Frost (or her publisher) seems to have upped her marketing game and this cover isn't at all in the style (or lack) of the previous books. At any rate, I was worried I wouldn't remember enough of the setting and stuff but didn't feel like rereading the others. Fortunately, Tammy Jo and many of the other characters are pretty memorable.

So I didn't have a hard time dropping back into the setting. I did remember how much I hate Tammy Jo's hangup with her ex, though. She needs to drive a stake through the heart of that nonsense, and I hope she managed it in this book. And if that's a spoiler for you, then I don't know what to say (because that relationship is dead, dead and the only one who can't see it is Tammy Jo). It doesn't help that Bryn is my very favorite kind of guy and Zach doesn't stand a chance in the face of that kind of multi-layered dreamy.

At any rate, all the things I loved about the previous books is present. And they were not a few. Tammy Jo is as determined, brash, and caring as ever. And I still like her brand of gumption, even though it's borderline TSTL. Mainly because Tammy knows the odds and simply accepts them as the price of being loyal to those she cares about and protecting her town from the bad things that seem to wash up there.

The only real drawback (besides ex issues) is that some of the motivations seem rather scant and some of the action a bit vague. There were times where I lost track of important bits in a fast-moving scene and others when I was wondering why she'd think to go one direction when about three others seemed more likely to pay sleuthing dividends. I was engaged with the story well-enough that my ability to edit in my head on the fly kicked in so I mostly rolled with it. But I note it because it is a weakness in the underlying craft. Also, Tammy Jo is harder on her wardrobe than any person alive or fictional...

Weaknesses aside, this comes to a solid four stars, even if most of that is personal taste. I love the banter and setting and am half besotted with both Tammy Jo and Bryn. So that's a very personal four stars and I'm man enough to own up to it.

A note about Steamy: There's one and a half explicit sex scenes and lots of running around half clothed. So this is the borderline low/middle of my steam tolerance.

My English review

I waited for the release of this novel for a long time and the re released of the previous volumes has allowed me to see this volume coming little by little. Of course, it was pre-ordered as soon as possible and I was eager to read it after seeing some glowing reviews about the story.

It’s been several years since the previous volume was released and I do not remember in detail everything that had happened before. However, we find our heroine Tammy Jo experiencing new problems. Oh yes, because there are many ones … Zach is back in town and is determined to recover her even if all that happened during his absence could change that. Bryn meanwhile remains determined to keep the young woman with him and to make her succumb by any manners. But while Tammy must choose between the two men in her life, a crucial choice indeed, other events will intervene completely upsetting her daily life. It seems that an invisible skeletal creature monitors her, a fae is trying to get something from her by all means and a young woman comes to her door asking her to be her friend. Evangeline is an unstable person who made several psychiatric stays but still nice and innocent in all circumstances. She is fragile but strong at the same time and she remains determined in her choice whatever the others might try to say. This is an enigmatic young person and I’m sure we’ll see her soon in the rest of the story. Even Tammy Jo falls under her spell and decides to help her escape her family as she is saying that they want to kill her. But by that, she does not know in what she will embark. While Vangie mysteriously disappears, it seems that her history is far more important than they could have expected and we could in this way learn even more about Edie and her death.

Tammy is changing significantly over novels. Her fae side appears more clearly and she fears that Bryn or Zach will abandon her because of it. It was however very interesting to see the two sides of the young woman as well as her limits in extreme conditions. Moreover, whatever she does, she is always accompanied by people who are close to her and hope to keep her alive as long as possible. Things get quite complicated when we see the situations in which she ends up. She will have to finally choose the man she wants to stay with and it’s true that I fully agree with her choice. I am also curious to see more of their relationship in the next book.

In terms of the plot, I thought it was well put together but it’s true that some choices of the author seem pretty well found but some were some quite surreal even though it does not really pose a problem here. However, it is true that I am a little anxious for the future because I am afraid that all will be a little too much but it remains to be seen. In any case I had a great time with this novel and I am looking forward to read more because the end announces us major events in the next volume. This is a nice set mixing magic, fae, vampires, all accompanied by a good touch of humor.

Tammy Jo is back better than ever.

When the first book, Would-Be Witch, was released in 2009 I was instantly hooked. Sucked in my Tammy Jo's goofy antics, crazy life, and magic induced antics.

I waited patiently, full of anticipation for each new book to come out. Then after Halfway Hexed was released in 2011 things were left hanging...would the series continue?

Finally in 2014 fans get to once again be immersed into the magical misfiring's of Tammy Jo's life.

And I'm not disappointed at all. It was like meeting up with an old friend and picking up right where we left off.

As the book opens Tammy Jo is still torn between Bryn Lyons the man who loves her magic and all and her ex-husband Zach with whom she shares a lot of history, but not all of it is good.

But she does finally make a solid choice in this book and I don;t think too many fans will be disappointed with it.

But the choice isn't the entire focus of the book. Tammy Jo has been approached by a wacky witch who brings more trouble Tammy's way- as if she needed any help attracting danger. But Tammy Jo, the nice person she is, decides to help this witch anyway. At great peril to herself.

The drama that ensures is sometimes hilarious, always dangerous, and for some reason has a tendency to leave Tammy Jo minus her clothes a lot. I chalk that up to the fairy part of her aching to get out and get her as close to nature as possible.

The end...wow I really didn't see that coming. I knew something was up but not that.

I think we should be prepared to see new characters and adventures in the upcoming books. I can't wait.

So I finished reading the third book Halfway Hexed, pretty late. I LOVED it. I hesitated maybe 2 minutes, then since I had Slightly Spellbound, I just started reading it right away, couldn't put it down, finishing at 5:45am! If I had needed to wait THREE years for the this book I would have cried.

I want everyone to read this series, this is the 4th book and in urban fantasy one need to read them all in order. This is fun and quirky and I LOVE it. So much. No, it is not classic literature. I'm allowed to read books I just enjoy, and I do enjoy classic literature also, btw.

I've already reread it and today post my review at Yummy Men & Kick Ass Chicks here:

http://yummymenandkickasschicks.com/?...

———-
I am reading the best books lately! This is another example where the series was new to me, so I started by reading the previous three books. I thought the first book was good, kind of funny and quirky. So I went on reading. I’m so glad I did! These books make me laugh, care about the characters and want more.

Slightly Spellbound is the fourth book in Kimberly Frost’s Southern Witch series. It was published May 6th, following a THREE year wait after book 3. I can tell you now, I would have DIED if I had been waiting three years. Book 3, Halfway Hexed, is also a 5 star book. So good. This is an urban fantasy series with a long romance. There is a love triangle with Bryn, Tamara and Zach. Let me just say I am totally Team Bryn, and have been from the beginning.

Tamara reminds me a bit of Sookie Stackhouse as she is southern, has some supernatural ancestry but thinks she’s just a normal girl. There are also relatives who are out of touch and haven’t been completely truthful. They both have some righteous integrity about saving lives and not killing people. The setting for both series is a small town with quirky characters, some of whom are clueless about the supernatural shenanigans. Tamara comes from a family of witches but hasn’t believed she had any powers herself. She is an awesome pastry chef. She’s smart, caring and a bit wacky.

Zach is her ex-husband; they were childhood sweethearts. He is a police officer and doesn’t believe in anything supernatural. Zach didn’t believe Tamara or support her, in fact he sent her to a therapist and thought about having her committed for mental problems! He does love her, but in such an old school, ”I’m in charge” asshole way. But he’s finally “growing up.” Tamara has a long history with Zach; she loves him and trusts him.

Bryn is a wizard and a few years older than Tamara and Zach. He is a lawyer, smart, knowledgeable, powerful, sexy and SO patient. He’s also whipped LOL. It’s charming to see a guy with money and power who could have anyone, and he loves Tamara (trouble with a capital T). Bryn always totally believes in her, and helps Tamara in her plans, even to his own detriment. He knows what he wants and isn’t ashamed or afraid of how he feels. Bryn rhymes with sin, for a reason! He is mmmmm delicious! Bryn is new, exciting and Tamara isn’t sure about trusting him since her family doesn’t.

By this fourth book, Tamara is learning more about herself and her capabilities. She is also making decisions about the men in her life. The scenes with her men, are much better than some series, since each couple actually spends time together, has some intimate conversations, and helps each other. I hope this series stays interesting with the characters and relationships and doesn’t go off into ridiculous plots and too many lovers or waffling about who will be her man. At this point, it is on track and I’m LOVING it.

In each book there is some magical evil which has to be fought. In Slightly Spellbound, Zach has just come back from supernatural law enforcement training, since he finally believes in the supernatural . In all four books, Tamara works with Bryn to protect their town from supernatural disasters and evil.

Slightly Spellbound could end at a nice place, the foes have been vanquished, it’s Christmas and two of Tamara’s relatives are back in town, but no. The last two chapters bring on a whole new shocking situation, which won’t be addressed until the next book. It’s not exactly a cliffhanger but the stage is set for the next book which won’t be available soon enough! (tomorrow?! No. May 2015!!) I recommend you get ready by reading the first four books now.

5plus stars

Giggle-worthy quotes -

“I’m going to consult some witches’ books. Not that I have many here to consult. But I’m not going to Bryn’s house. I’ve made it twelve whole days without sleeping with him, and no scary skeleton in a tree is going to send me to Seduction Central now that Bryn’s big case is finally over.”
—–
“We’re not going to get carried away. If anything, you’re in trouble with me.”

“Am I?” he asked.

“I’ve warned you a bunch of times to stop doing things to make me fall more in love with you, but you just don’t listen.”

He smiled. “Yeah, me treating you well, it’s a problem.’

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta:
*Copy Gifted in Exchange for an Honest Review

--Actual rating 4.5 Skulls

The fourth magical instalment in the Southern Witch series charting the somewhat chaotic life of Tammy Jo Trask. She's part witch, part Fae and most definitely all Texan and unfortunately right now caught between two very different men. On one side there's her ex husband Zach who will always hold a place in her heart and then there's the sexy Bryn Lyons who she is magically bound to. Two men and one woman , it should be an easy choice right? Trust me in Tammy Jos world nothing is ever as straightforward as it seems!

Tammy Jo's magic is a little complicated as she's such a curious mixture. Her inner witch calls upon her earth powers but her Fae side is getting much harder to control. There's someone spying on her and if that wasn't enough to creep Tammy Jo out something odd is happening to the towns ghosts as they are disappearing ! When Evangeline Rhodes shows up asking Tommy Jo to be her bridesmaid it sets off a chain of events that will lead Tammy Jo on a not so merry dance. There's danger tracking Evangeline and now it looks as if Tammy Jo is right in the middle of it too! Dark magic practices are threatening the safety of Tammy Jo and those she loves and when Evangeline's thoroughly nasty family start playing their evil games it's time for Tammy Jo to come out fighting. She's not going to quietly stand by and watch pure evil take over her town and they had just better step aside. Tammy Jo is a woman on a mission but her inner most turmoil is about to pull her in directions that she just never expected.

I love Tammy Jo! And I love the way this book is written as the reader gets to be inside Tammy Jos head and she has a voice that really lifts the story from the page and straight into my imagination. It's so easy to feel that the reader is right alongside this strongly written heroine and it's an immediate reaction that stayed with me throughout the book. I really liked Tammy Jo, she's full of southern charm and wit. Written as a brave fun loving woman who gets into all sorts of scrapes but she always has time for those who need help. Her interactions with the two men in her life gave me pause though as I really wanted her to make up her mind quickly as triangles are so not my thing but the author gives sound reasons for Tammy Jo's hesitance . Letting go of something so right is hard to do and trusting blindly in something new may not always lead to happiness. Two totally different gorgeous men now there's a dilemma!

It's a fast paced plot with both new characters and those from previous books appearing and I loved Mercutio! Is it essential to read the others first? I'd say no as the author does a pretty good job of explaining things, but it's such a fun series that it would be a shame to miss out. Lots of action to offset the romance aspect of this book but it's the heroine Tammy Jo that truly makes this series work . She's fun and quirky but so full of compassion for everyone. Don't get on the wrong side of her though as this girl will take you down ! As for her men? Well read this book and find out if she's made up her mind and just enjoy the absolute madness that colours Tammy Jo's world!

Classic codependency with a redundant plot device: Tammy Jo Trask is half witch and half fae. While the witch half is human in thought and behavior, the fae part of her is mercurial. This would have made for a nice contrast had there been one. But I found Tammy extremely silly and fickle. When she encounters a clearly insane and needy stranger who wants Tammy to be her friend, Tammy exercises dingbat logic. Then when someone kills people who were trying to kill Tammy, she gets a bit judgmental and self-righteous about the killing. To take it a step further, she impulsively and repeatedly rushes into danger alone, gets beat up, relies on fae magic, ends up naked, and gets rescued and nursed back to health by Bryn, her wizard love interest. It happens over and over again. The climax is the same situation, except where during the previous occasions she tried really hard, this time she tries really, really hard. It was redundant, not to mention a bit simplistic and uninspired.

The most annoying part of her shenanigans is that she stays with Bryn and runs out of her own clothes, so she has to wear sexy dresses and underwear which always get torn off of her by the bad guys. At one point she wears a sexy dress and pajama combination taking her firmly into the woman-child arena where it's not her fault that she's sexy and naked because she's a naive child. And with her dingbat logic she couldn't possibly...I don't know...go home and get other clothes?!? Or, how about sending someone over to get them for her? I'm sure Bryn has a messenger service on speed dial. It's no wonder she has two men vying over her. She is such a codependent female stereotype - silly, uninformed, in need of saving, naked - that men must feel exceptionally virile around her. She relies too much on rescuing and on fae magic rather than on her own wits. I needed more intentional action, rather than accidental action, from her.

In contrast, I loved her fae aspect. Where human Tammy is silly, fae Tammy is mercurial; where human Tammy is a dingbat, fae Tammy is wise (albeit psychotic), where human Tammy is well suited for a romantic rescue novel, fae Tammy has all the makings of an interesting urban fantasy heroine. Maybe that was the problem for me...that a heroine more suited for a romance novel is being placed in the unlikely position of urban fantasy heroine. Ironically, while the men in her life are in love with human Tammy, they don't really like fae Tammy. The fae don't do codependency well. I'm sure there are a lot of people who won't be bothered by the things that bothered me, and will be far more forgiving of Tammy's silliness. I also really enjoyed the first three books and I like where the ending is taking Tammy, and so I will be back.

Southern Hospitality & Survival: SLIGHTLY SPELLBOUND with GIVEAWAY

E-Galley provided by publisher for review. NO remuneration was exchanged and all opinions presented herein are my own except as noted.

Today was going to start a hop, but it was postponed, so instead I offer you this review and giveaway of a print copy of SLIGHTLY SPELLBOUND by Kimberly Frost.

I know I read the first book in this series but there are too many gaps in the story for me to actually be up to date here — in fact I missed two books, number 2 two in the series, BARELY BEWITCHED and number three, HALFWAY HEXED as well as a novella. You can find out all about them and everything else Kim writes on her site: FrostFiction. Frost creates a delightful world of characters who run the gamut from human to witch. For some reason. lately, it seems like every other female character is a baker. That’s true for Tammy Jo who bakes out of her house and has an apparently magical relationship to sugar, butter and cream. She also has a relationship with an ocelot, her familiar, with whom she shares an uncanny understanding. I am constantly worried he is going to get killed.

I enjoyed the fast pace of the characters' relationships and the action, the women’s ditziness and the ever-suffering males going along, picking them up, saving them, or being saved, a lot. Tammy Jo’s been attacked so often she has run out of clothes.

Tammy Jo, the main character, has a rolling easiness to her as she not-so-blithely goes through life and pretends to be unfazed facing crazies of every variety, 75% of whom want to kill her, 20% want her to bake them something and 5% want to love her. She wants others to be comfortable and happy and rarely puts herself first. Maybe it is her Southern Hospitality coming through. It feels too smooth, as if Tammy Jo wants us to feel that she is taking it all in stride.

The most interesting thing to me in this story is how Frost handles the love triangle between Tammy Jo, her ex husband, Zach, and the warlock Bryn with whom she shares a love connection as well as a magical one. I was surprised by the direction Frost goes with it. The denouement is also unusual and doesn’t go predictably. The very end felt a little deus ex machinated to me. My other criticism is a lack of character development in in the male love interests and a loosely defined set of rules in the magical constructs.

But other than that, I had my nose stuck in the book as I walked around the house and really enjoyed the writer’s voice as she sets Tammy Jo up in impossible situations that make her improvise and grow.

I recommend the book, and the series.

This was the best installment of the Southern Witch series yet! I'm really excited that this series has been continued, as I had sadly resigned myself to the idea that Tammy Jo's story would end with book 3. But with the novella, this novel, and surely at least one more forthcoming, I've been happily surprised and completely delighted!

The greatest thing about this book, and what makes it an improvement over the other ones (especially #2 & #3), is that the plot was not convoluted and hard to follow; there weren't too many loose ends, too many red herrings, or too many characters that made it difficult to stay invested and interested. I loved the mysteries with Vangie, and the lead in with Crux and the sister was exciting for the next book. I was in LOVE with the idea of Tammy Jo becoming more fae, and how that changes her character but she seems so unaware of it while it's happening, and how magically those parts are written.

I was also really happy with how the love triangle played out, though Zach has never been a favorite of mine and I was really disappointed to find out that he was going to be in this book. I found him more likeable than in previous installments, and I actually thought the interactions between him and Bryn were pretty compelling. All the characters behaved in such a way that I wasn't too annoyed with the flip-flopping that has been so persistent in this series. Nevertheless, I hope it stays resolved the way it's been and that Bryn and Tammy Jo get their happy ending! (The last "vaginal fantasy" series I read ended the big love story VERY unhappily within the last 5 pages of the last book, so I'm desperately hoping that doesn't happen here.)

I'm so excited to read the next one, whenever it comes out!

* I will try to not include spoilers!

Slightly Spellbound is Kimberly Frost's fourth book in the Southern Witch series. The main character known as Tammy-Jo Trask is half Witch half Fae. To say she lives a chaotic life would be an understatement. Her heart is torn between a wizard and a former high school football jock. As if that was not complicated enough. She is visited by a young woman who asks for help. This request takes everyone Tammy Jo cares for on a quest of adventure, answers and discoveries.

This is the first book I have ever read from Kimberly Frost, I LOVED it!!!! I will be picking up the rest of the series for sure. I REALLY hope she writes a fifth book in this series! She is going on my list of favorite authors! I will read any books Ms. Kimberly Frost writes in the future! I am so Ecstatic and grateful that I received this FANTASTIC book via Goodreads First reads!

I will be writing a review on my blog very soon as well!

Ever since I read Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison, I've been trying to find writers in the same vein.

Along the way, I've discovered some truly wonderful {Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Kelley Armstrong, Karen Marie Moning, Jeaniene Frost...}, and some not so wonderful authors, and even authors I started out loving but lost interest in, but I found nothing like what I was searching for - until now!

Kimberly Frost pulled me into Tammy Jo’s world quickly {I won and started with the 4th in the Southern Witch series} and while sweets & baking are not my thing, I get the attraction.

I look forward to re-reading this when I order books 1-3 of the Southern Witch series - as soon as I win some more Amazon codes!

My highest praise for an author is that I'll order their earlier works & I just ordered & look forward to reading All That Bleeds (A Novel of the Etherlin) & All That Falls (A Novel of the Etherlin)

I expect Kimberly Frost to be in my *have to* read column, just like the authors I mentioned above!

As the adventures continue, it's kind of interesting to realize all these books are happening fairly close in the timeline, and so we're getting a play by play of the character arcs that they're all going through. With Zach finally back I worried that they would be back to the drama of choosing who she should love, but right at the beginning (a bit of a spoiler but it's in chapter 2) she does choose Bryn and I appreciate how Zach does accept that, he's not all we can be friends, but he does accept that they may still have to work together to save the town at times. With this out of the way we do get to focus more on the new mystery at hand, and I love Vangie. She's crazy and really makes you question what's real and what isn't, but that just makes this book all the more fun. This book does involve Edie more, and kind of give her character a bit more purpose to the story, because for the most part I really haven't liked her. Even Tammy's aunt has accepted that Bryn is a good guy, and that he's been there for her, but Edie goes out of her way to be mean and hurtful and so honestly I've really questioned her purpose but here she does tie in and makes the mystery all the more exciting.

Going to warn you as I've read the next book, which is the final one in the series. This one does end on a slight cliffhanger but the next book kind of ruins things so maybe just stop here.

I am currently reading the fifth instalment of this series, so yeah, you could say I've been truelly caught in the world of Tammy Jo and Bryn and Zach and Edie.
Each book follows Tammy Jo in an unbelievable and totally goofy. She is a nutcracker and has a lot of fight to do with all kinds of supernatural beings and in some cases even with normal people that are just evil ( what do you know, Huma nature)
However what characterises her is that she is a protector, she will fight for her family, for her townspeople, for her love.
Even though I found annoying the fact that she goes half cocked headfirst in a spooky situation, sometimes overconfident and totally unprepared, she does it because she feels that she has to be the one to resolve the issue and help the others. She is witty and quirky and quick on her thinking, ruthless with the enemy and a top shot, but has a tender heart, and that makes her so endearing.
Bryn is all what you want from a male character - he is totally in love with Tammy Jo, he is loyal, he is protective, he is tender, he is smart, he is an expert at witchcraft, he is powerful and a little bit secretive, and a total candylegger.
So yeah, you have all that you need in this package for a nice warm cozy January read.

Wonderful

I am very sad that there appears to be only one more book in this series! I hope for more, and I look forward to seeing if there are any other books written by this author!

I've loved this series (so far), but I don't like the family ghost Edie who seems to be headed for a romance with Tammy Jo's ex-husband. If that happens then I'm done with this series.

Peak Tammy Jo mayhem. I was wildly delighted the whole book. There’s nothing funnier than when she goes full fae.

When I first picked up this series I thought it was so good that I read the 1st & 2nd books back to back. By the time I got to the last book, I was so bored with it I was tempted to take it off my Kindle without reading it. What a shame, as it puts me off any other books the author releases.

I'd say no as the author does a pretty good job of explaining things but it's such a fun series that it would be a shame to miss out.

Review time:
Book four of the Southern Witch Novels is “Slightly Spellbound” by Kimberly Frost.
Not sure I liked the premise of this books as well as her last couple. The story was entrancing nonetheless.
Tammy Jo must finally make the choice between her ex-husband, whom she still loves dearly, and the warlock that melds so seamlessly with her and her magic. She must also catch the killer of her long dead double great aunt; he’s back and looking to kill again. But an encounter with a faery knight forces her to explore her fae side, and learn of her Seelie heritage. A dangerous experience in Unseelie territory.
The things I disliked about this particular story was the love issues and the sudden appearance of a new character that didn’t seem quite necessary.
Tammy Jo divorced her husband for very good reasons, so the choice between him and Bryan should have been easily made (in my opinion). I dislike the use of romantic crisis to further a plot. Also, the introduction of a character that actually hardly ever made an appearance in the book furthered to muddy the plot line.
Still, it was a good story and an important precursor to the last book, which takes Tammy Jo to Underhill to meet her twin sister.
Five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Slightly Spellbound is a Fun with a capital F read. Just how much did I love this book? I enjoyed it so much I hopped over and purchased the prior three installments before I even finished reading it. The world building is great and the characters are wonderfully excentric and colorful. Tammy Jo is a local southern gal who has a family history that leaves her part witch and part fey with both magics in one package resulting in uproarious consequences. She has a pure heart, is wonderfully funny, and to top it all off she is a baker of all things awesome in the pastry world.

In this installment she runs afoul of a creepy skeletal creature, the evil step family of a new nutbunny friend, a strange hunky new fey with a bad attitude, gets gnawed on by an alligator, shot, and I don't even know where to begin about her love life. There was never a dull moment and I was glued to my reader gobbling up each tasty page. Slightly Spellbound is definitely a recommended read for those who enjoy murder, mayhem, mystery, and magic with a taste of humor in the mix. I received this book via NetGalley.

3.5 stars. Tammy Jo stops flitting back and forth between Bryn & Zach early on and actually makes a choice which allowed me to go back to enjoying the story and finding her entertaining once more. I am definitely happy with her choice

Starting the book, I expected to give this four stars. I enjoyed Tammy Jo and company in previous books, but Tammy Jo is getting to be a little too Sookie with a bunch of guys wanting her/after her for whatever reasons. I stopped reading that other series when things got a little too ridiculous for me.

The love triangle appears to have been resolved at least.

I do plan to read the next book.

I won this book on Goodreads. I know it is part of a series but I did not have time to get of the first books.

I would have given this book 3 1/2 stars. I enjoyed reading the story but sometimes found it predictable.

Tammy Jo Trask is part witch part fairy. She is also indecisive. She cannot seem to choose between her ex-husband, the cop, Zach. Or her lawyer, the warlock, Bryn. This seems to be a pattern. One she will have to break, while being attacked and chased. Seems some people want her and others jus want her dead.

Kimberly Frost writes a good story. Even though sometimes predictable, the characters keep you entertained and interested. There are moments when they make you laugh, and moments you truly wish they were real so you could slug them.

I am interested to see how this all started. So I would say all in all its a good read, pun intended. I look forward to reading the beginning of her story to better understand her choices in this one.
