Trevor Takes Flight

Rate this book
Trever wasn’t like every other goose. Sure, he looked like them. He even sounded like them. However, there was one teeny tiny little difference between Trevor and all the other birds. Trevor couldn’t fly. Not even a little bit. That wouldn’t be a huge deal, except for one thing. Winter. It was awfully cold in Canada during the winter, and Trevor didn’t enjoy the snow and ice. Not one little bit. When it came time to migrate south for the winter, Trevor couldn’t go. He was stuck in Canada all by himself. Alone. Until it started to get warmer, and all his friends returned from their journey. However, this year would be different.
Trevor was determined to learn to fly; one way or another, he would make it happen!

Genre ~ children's fiction (ages 4-8)
Publication date ~ September 10, 2023
Est page Count ~ 26

Trevor is scared of flying and tries to drum up the courage to fly south for the winter.

What I liked the most:
~ how we start right off with Canadian goose facts
~ how Trevor tried to come up with alternative ways to achieve his end goal
~ how he tries to hype himself up positively ~ I must overcome my fear of flying and be the goose I always knew I could be.
~ his great way of thinking ~ I’ll start small and work my way up. One step at a time.
~ the illustrations by Kezzia Crossly did a nice job of showing Trevor's features going from scared and sad to happy and joyful

A fabulous little story that shows how if at first you don't succeed just keep on trying and you'll most likely achieve your goal. The writing is simple and easy to follow along with.

What a lovely and beautifully illustrated book about facing your fears! This is a wonderful book for young readers and for parents to read to their children.

Trevor is a Canadian Goose who cant't fly. All the other geese can fly, but not Trevor. Winter is approaching and it’s time to migrate. Trevor is afraid yet determined. He did not like being alone during winter while the other geese flew south. He was going to try and fly! Trevor was fearful but determined and used creative thinking to set about achieving his goal.

I loved the message of this book. That it is okay to be anxious to do things; especially when doing them for the first time. That if one starts by taking small steps and keeps trying, one can achieve their goals. I appreciated how the author's approached anxiety in a gentle manner and gave children a character with whom they can relate. The message that it is okay to be nervous but to keep trying, to go for your goals, and to celebrate your accomplishments.

Another plus of this book is the information/facts on Canadian Geese.

Thank you to Ben Jackson and Sam Lawrence who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

What happens when a Canada Goose who is supposed to fly, is afraid to do exactly that?

Well…

He finds a different mode of transportation.

And…

That is exactly what Trevor did.

At first.

Until…

He realized that wasn’t really the best option for himself.

So…

What could Trevor do that would allow him to be with his friends so he could migrate like he needed to each October?

He did something he wasn’t used to doing…

He practiced how to…

Fly.

And…

Once he did…

He gained the confidence he needed to actually…

Take flight.

This is a delightful, beautifully illustrated, confidence building story that will give every young child the opportunity to see what they can do when facing something new or scary for the first time. Looking at what Trevor did and overcoming it.

Interest levels: Ages 3-8 years

There are also some Canada Goose facts provided in this book that will be beneficial to young readers.

I want to thank the author for this complimentary book for our Little Free Library Shed. I am providing an honest review.

An excellent story of determination, courage and overcoming fear – a joy to read. Perfect for children aged 3-8 years.

Trevor has a fear of flying (Aerophobia) and wants to overcome it, it is having a negative effect on his life. This is his tale of how he does it and one that everybody can learn from. Yes, it is a story of keep trying different things to overcome your fears and with determination and hard work you will get there. But it is also a story about it not being easy and the best way is to take baby steps and slowly but surely increase them until you reach your goal. It is a story of never giving up, baby steps, practice makes perfect alongside courage, determination and a strong mental attitude.

A heartwarming and empowering tale for young children...

"Trevor Takes Flight" by Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson delivers a heartwarming and empowering tale that will resonate deeply with young readers. Meet Trevor, a goose who outwardly appears just like his feathered companions, but there's a tiny yet significant difference: he can't fly!

As winter envelops Canada in a snowy embrace, Trevor faces a unique challenge. While his friends embark on their annual migration south, Trevor remains behind, trapped in the cold and solitude of Canada. The story paints a touching picture of Trevor's loneliness as he watches his friends take flight, leaving him behind. However, this year, something remarkable stirs within Trevor—an unwavering determination to overcome his limitations and take to the skies. His sheer determination and resolve shine through, illuminating the story with a powerful message of self-belief and perseverance, no matter how imposing the obstacles may seem.

Lawrence and Jackson's storytelling brings Trevor's emotions and experiences to life, making this book both engaging and educational. The vibrant illustrations add depth to Trevor's relatable character, allowing young readers to connect with his journey on a personal level. "Trevor Takes Flight" is a delightful read that imparts valuable life lessons wrapped in a heartwarming story. Very highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.

The Review

This was a fantastic and well-illustrated children’s book. The beautiful animation style of the art itself brought the warmth and emotional core of the story and Trevor as a character to life perfectly. The fast-paced story and the engaging narrative will bring children and parents together perfectly.

The authors did a phenomenal job of bringing a heartfelt story to life, playing on the themes of loneliness and facing adversity considerably through Trevor as both a character and his story. The way Trevor fights to overcome his fear of flight and the unexpected obstacles that land in his path to make him stumble on his path showcases the strength and courage he had to face those adversities and strive to be better, making this an inspiring children’s tale.

The Verdict

Authors Ben Jackson & Sam Lawrence’s “Trevor Takes Flight” is a must-read children’s book that is gripping, engaging, and thoughtfully written. The captivating artwork and the memorable story will engage young readers' minds and bring families together as they see the young goose in this story overcoming his fears.

‘For the first time I’m flying just like the other birds.’ Fun lesson for kids to learn!

Australian author Ben Jackson has two homes - Tasmania, Australia (his birth place) and Ontario, Canada where he now lives with his Canadian born wife and co-author Sam Lawrence. Ben is a tradesman by day and a writer with Sam by night. Ben and Sam turn their imaginative minds to the world of birds in this fun to read (stimulating to absorb!) new book TREVOR TAKES FLIGHT. Kezzia Crossley provides the excellent illustrations.

Poor goose Trevor has not learned the ability to fly, so when autumn arrives in Canada and the annual bird migration to the warmer south arrives, he is determined to correct this ‘disability’ and standing on a park bench with wings lifted, the wind boosts him into the air and he IS able to fly! Determination and practice and a bit of luck elevates Trevor into the realm of his airborne bird friends! Fun and well written, this book is a great read for boys or girls about the commitment to following your dreams. A winner all around!
