Explore never-before-seen adventures of the hit Paramount+ show! Strange new worlds beckon!
Set course with Captain Pike and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to the Sargasso Expanse as they become the first to explore this uncharted region of space! Up first in this romp across the stars, the Enterprise crew learn what it truly means to explore the strange and unfamiliar when they lose contact with Starfleet and everything outside the region.
Collects issues #1–5 of the series by Star Trek comics veterans Mike Johnson, Ryan Parrott, and Angel Hernandez.
I’ve read both this and The Illyrian Enigma and have enjoyed both. I enjoyed this one a lot more. It felt like a cross between “The Gamesters of Triskelion” and Voyager’s “Drive.” At its core, it exemplifies the importance of working together and finding compromise. It feels very Trek and is beautifully drawn.
STRANGE NEW WORLDS: SCORPION RUN is a fascinating concept as a mad alien forces the Enterprise and its crew into a race with the losers punished horribly. I kind of wish Ortegas had played a bigger role in this one as I would have thought she'd have been more useful during this conflict. On the other hand, I like the inherent Original Series silliness of being forced into a space race and the various species involved. The art is dynamic and I really enjoyed the ending.
The absolute rizz of Pike even in comic form. I would go into battle for that man many, many times over. 😍
Gosh, I just loved this! The chaotic space-race premise was fun, but as is so often the case with the best of Trek, it allowed an exploration of the power of cooperation and putting your trust in the goodness of people/beings.
This is a big of a mixed bag. The story itself is interesting, if a bit dark and lacking the fun and cuddly vibes that make SNW - season 1 and 2, not 3 - the best Trek show so far. With more fluff between the action it might have been better. (For me, at least, since I personally enjoy the fluff bits in between and slow pace a lot more than fast paced 'excitement'.) The artwork varies from utterly wonderful to barely recognisable, and some things are a bit off. Like calling the Ready/Briefing Room Pike's quarters or ending on "Punch it" instead of "Hit it". A nice, quick read, but it had potential to be even better.
But, other than other Trek comics (and quite a few tie-in novels over the last few decades), it did keep the characters in-character AND focused on the ideals of the Federation.
The Enterprise finds itself trapped in a Wacky Races style starship race, only if they lose, they'll all be annihilated. Oops.
This is fun, which is always a good sign. The premise is insane enough to be a real Star Trek episode, and the moral of overcoming your differences to reach a united solution that saves everyone is about as Star Trek as you can get. Plus the spaceships and the battle scenes look great.
Top of their game for everyone involved in this one.
A big miss. The art is fine. I don’t like Angel Hernandez’s traced style for people but his ships and action are good. But the story is a total dud. Just a confusing snooze of a space Grand Prix.
A classic race story. With some fun twists and turns. Pike has got his hands full with this one. There was a good mix of plot and characterization in this one. Lots of fun!
A good choice of a standalone read if you're a Trekkie, SNW enthusiast, or even if you are new to the franchise, as the plot and characters aren't difficult to follow along with; even sans background knowledge on their lore.
Starfleet runs on the following: dilithium, coffee from a nebula *obviously not together*, hot earl grey tea, the occasional Vulcan eyebrow raise, and of course, somehow banding together in the face of danger to surpass insurmountable odds (sadly this graphic novel only contains the latter).
Once I got into the rhythm of the comic and invested in its mission, I found myself giddy at the verbal finesse of Una Chin-Riley, the creative application of Spock's abilities and logic, and better yet floored by the rich and dynamic illustrations of many of the panels (this is in addition to the gorgeous standalone character and comic concept art pages throughout).
I believe it's worth mentioning that if you are a big Uhura, Nurse Chapel or Doctor M'Benga fan, this might not hit it out of the ballpark for you considering their brief - and mostly - passive/background appearances in a few of the panels.
That being said, I felt the character design was strong and in-universe, their challenges during felt perfectly on brand for a Star Trek episode and...although I appreciate that the physical scale of their ultimate solution to being victorious likely being VERY difficult to replicate on screen, IF it were to ever happen I would be starstruck! *Apologies for the pun and drawn-out ambiguity. In the words of Riversong, "Spoilers :) ".*
I’ve been missing strange new worlds for months, so this hit the spot. It’s simple and positive, and fast paced with really good art too! I miss the crew and all my favorite characters so much
A classic Star Trek romp with the Enterprise crew- could have easily been ten times longer and I would have devoured it just as hungrily. Great work to tell a fresh and complete story in the limited format and without skipping out on the depth and emotion at Strange New Worlds' core.
