Long-lost friends from university explore their unresolved history on a road trip around Scotland in this second chance sapphic romance.
Anna lives in the Scottish Highlands and works at Glenbuinidh whisky distillery. Loyal to her small town and her beloved distillery, all she wants is to find her future wife, settle down and start a family. But when her American adventure-seeking first love comes back into her life, Anna’s old feelings bubble to the surface. Feelings she thought were firmly in the past.
Having quit her corporate job in New York to be free to travel and find her life’s purpose, Hayley asks Anna to join her on a tour around Scotland. The connection they shared brings them back together, but is there something more than friendship between them? Can Anna find the courage to open her heart to the first woman she ever loved? Or will she choose the safety of what she already knows?
Closer than Ever is a spin-off from Louder than Words but can be read as a standalone story.
4.5⭐ I love second chance novels so much : tension and chemistry are already there from the start of the book, and the more there I unresolved feelings, the better. Did I find what I love so much here? The answer is a big yes. The book is written only in Anna pov and it adds extra tension and angst. Both characters are really endearing and the part where they are on a journey together was just perfect. The writing really makes you feel the friendship and love between the characters. Anna struggling to fight her fears and feelings after all these years was really touching. I felt so much for her, I just wanted to give her a big hug. The last part was a lot of inner turmoil and was less smooth to read for me, probably because I recognized myself a lot in Anna and it hit a bit too close to home. Overall, with feelings, chemistry and spice, that novel gave me all the feels (and made me want to visit Scotland) PS : That truth or dare scene was definitely my favorite.
This second chance romance was the perfect relaxation read. I loved how it was centered around their roadtrip and how detailed that was. The flashbacks were really well done as well. The kettle scene had me laughing with how accurate that was for me when I was introduced to them by my wife. I also have to mention the spice🌶️🌶️.
Thank you to the author for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
There was a lot to like in this slow burn sapphic romance in Scotland. Anne is our MC and fell in love with her flatmate Hayley, who was spending a year at Uni in Scotland, coming from America. The first part of the novel is the two women meeting up again ten years later as Hayley quit her High end job in New York to travel in Scotland and Europe.
The middle part of the book is them discovering/rediscovering each other and by far works the best. Traveling around Scotland in a campervan was lovely and extremely intimate, but when the trip ends, the book grinds to a very slow and long terminal slog.
Lovely characters, lovely setting, but too drawn out and predictable to be a good story in the end. Some nice highs along the way though. 3+ stars
Closer than Ever is about uncertainty, being brave while facing your deepest fears. This is the fifth book I have read by Lisa Elliot and man, she never disappoints! I thoroughly love her new book, everything about it. Lisa’s writing is utterly engaging, you can’t put this book down. I was completely engrossed in this beautiful universe while going through so many feels. I wish I could experience reading it for the first time, again!
How would you deal with falling in love with your friend? With the stakes that come with it. Would you plunge, and risk it? Closer than Ever is centered around Anna, as she reunites with her friend Hayley, after losing touch for ten years. Hayley is not just a friend, but the one that she never got over. We follow them going on a road trip in the Scottish Highlands, rediscovering, and reconnecting with each other. What could possibly happen, right? lol This is such a beautiful slow-burn romance, while also touching on anxiety, which many of us struggle with. Lisa’s writing is always true to life. The way she addresses anxiety is so on point and shows how debilitating it is for Anna. Both Anna and Hayley are such relatable and endearing characters. They go through so much growth individually and together. You keep cheering them on throughout the book. The chemistry between Anna and Hayley is out of this world, so much fire!! This story is filled with angst, depth, passion, and patience. You just never want it to end. Ah, what a wonderful read!!!
This is the second second chance romance in which they go on a road trip and the outgoing one convinces the anxious one to be more chill than I’ve read. I enjoyed it though.
I absolutely loved this book! One of my favourite sapphic reads of the year so far!! The chemistry between Anna and Hayley fizzles off the page… I spent at least half the read embroiled in all the sapphic yearning… and the pay off was spectacularly done! Now I just need to figure out how to pack up my life and go travelling around Scotland in a camper van!! …but first, I’m off to buy more of Lisa Elliot’s books!!!
So I did like the story, the characters, and getting to continue the series. What I didn't like was that one character was expected to do all the compromising in the end, while the other had everything her way. Either that, or the narrative POV was unreliable. We're told from the beginning that Anna wants certain things and how settled and happy she is with her home, work, etc. She's got a solid friend group, a job she loves, a home she's proud of, and she's good with that. Sure, she wants someone to share it with, but she shows zero inclination to give up those things until the very end. Haley is unhappy with her life, so she makes these huge changes, which brings them together, and gives her the freedom to do whatever she wants. Yet, it's Anna who compromises and takes time off work to travel. Haley wants the same things as Anna, yet also wants a few years of freedom first, but instead of saying that, she runs off mid conversation, goes no contact, then expects Anna to just do all the changing and emotional labor and sacrifice.
So did Anna give up the life she loved? The job? Is she a kept woman now? Is that actually what she wants, or did she compromise everything about who she was and her goals to follow Haleys' dream and timeline?
At the very least Haley could have acknowledged that she's a runner and needs to work on that, and that she hadn't been seriously considering Anna's needs and wants, never once suggesting anything that showed regard for them, only vague references to maybe someday wanting to have kids, but nothing about settling down or what that might look like to her and when.
If I were writing a sequel, I'd give them a few years. Anna would end up with resentment about giving up her career and home, Haley would keep putting off starting a family, and when she realized Anna was unhappy she'd do a runner instead of being willing to compromise on anything or have a real conversation. Anna would move back, pick up the pieces of her career, not have regrets necessarily but also realize that there is a happy medium between letting anxiety rule her life and throwing all plans and caution to the wind and letting someone else determine her life path. She'd have some sort of contentious relationship with the hot single mom who bought her childhood home and is renovating it, and enemies to lovers would ensue. Haley would have her own story about learning to compromise and facing whatever demons always make her run away. She'd realize she needed to make changes, have closure with Anna, and move on with someone else. In true lesbian style, their friendship would probably be retained in the end.
Ultimately, to me, this reads like less of an HEA and more of an HFN
Lisa Elliot has a way of drawing out every last emotion in her characters. The story is being told by Anna. It opens up with Anna at the train station June 2013 waiting for Hayley’s departure. Anna is emotional, Hailey’s leaving and going back to the states after being at the university with Anna and her roommates. But mostly more because Anna is in love with Hailey and after last night, Hayley is definitely not into Anna. Promises of keeping in touch. Then it goes back to present time where Anna is at the train station waiting for Hayley’s arrival ten years later. Wondering about what had happened. Hayley after a couple of initial texts, ghosted her. And she hadn’t heard from her until recently with a couple of emails and an announcement she was coming to visit and would be looking to travel around Scotland. So now the scene has been set and you know there are going to be problems and past hurts rearing their ugly heads but when Hayley steps off that train and Anna sees how so beautiful and grownup Hayley is the feelings she had spent the better part of ten years trying to get over Hayley are now resurfacing and Anna has to put a stop to it. This story takes on a roller coaster of emotions from Anna and Hayley. Because as Hayley is staying with Anna as they search for a camper Hayley can buy for her around Scotland adventure, Hayley slowly has been telling Anna why she did what she did years ago. Even though this story goes back to their university days together and then present time, it had enough storyline to pull you in. There is a part of this that feels slightly longer than it should be. I get it is a slow burn but I felt it took longer than necessary. But that did not take away the excitement, the tears, the truths and the heartaches to make this a really worthwhile read.
Closer Than Ever is an absolutely wonderful story that hooked me from the first page. Lisa Elliot opted to tell this story through Anna’s (third-person) point of view which I feel was an excellent choice. Readers are intimately close to Anna’s emotions surrounding her love for Hayley and being left to decipher Hayley’s true feelings added an air of mystery and intensified the longing. Their present-day story is interspersed with glimpses from a decade ago. The details Lisa Elliot gives at each point are perfectly placed, giving readers just enough each time which definitely heightens the anticipation. The journey throughout Anna’s home country is filled with picturesque landscapes, exciting adventures, and heartfelt conversations, all wrapped up in a snazzy campervan that Anna used her skills to spruce up! I enjoyed learning about Scotland and found myself following their journey using Google Maps! Closer Than Ever is hands down one of the best second-chance romances I’ve read because while it’s a slow burn, the pacing is absolutely perfect, the dialogue is effortless, and the story is swoon-worthy. Anna and Hayley are relatable and captivating characters whose emotional and physical journeys are engaging and filled with so much growth for both characters. Their story is filled with longing, honesty, vulnerability, and bravery. and proves that it’s never too late for a second chance. I absolutely love everything about this book and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful second-chance, slow-burn romance!
I struggled more than usual to finish reading Closer Than Ever.
While I have nothing against the ten-year pinning/unrequited crushing period, I have trouble with the fact that nothing (or very little) has changed during that period. Whether it is Hayley’s personality or Anna and Hayley’s dynamics, I wish they had grown in a way that showed. Their approach to life and way of living are quite different, which make them incompatible at the beginning of the story, and they still don’t feel compatible by the end of the book.
Hayley is a free spirit, always on the move and always asking Anna to do something that pushes the latter out of her comfort zone. And while there is nothing wrong with that, it reaches a level where it felt like Anna has to give away what makes her Anna in order to make their relationship work. Anna makes too many concessions for me to appreciate their story, especially considering their past, and the way Hayley leaves and goes cold on her too easily.
I enjoyed the description of their road trip and the landscape. I also liked the fact that they have hard conversations regarding their past, their relationship now, and their future. I think I would have liked the story more if it was written with both POV because I could never fully get what Hayley really thinks and trust what she says.
This book is about Anna and Hayley. And, how they were best friends at university and lost touch later in life. Nearly 10 years later Hayley meets Anna to go on a trip together around Scotland as they've planned a decade ago.
This is a second-chance romance and despite how different they are, they always find a way to each other. The characters had great chemistry and a good banter.
You can tell these 2 are best friends by this Author's wonderful writing. It really takes a great amount of planning and talent to make the readers feel what the characters feel.
One of the characters was explaining how she understood she was in love and she realized when she had recurrent dreams about this person who was long gone from her life she'd wake up every day disappointed and sad. And, I truly experienced this in my own life, when I thought I was not in love with this person I had recurring dreams about this person for months. I truly felt seen when this was mentioned in this book.
I loved this book so much. Would recommend this to anyone who loves a good second chance sapphic romance and has been afraid to choose love over anything else and wonders what would have happened if you did!!!!!!!!
find someone who will listen to you bitch and moan about not wanting to do something scary and then affectionately make you do it anyway
this book had such big feelings it was delightful. Anna and Hayley have a very heartfelt connection that is only mostly Hayley going "come onnnnnnn it'll be fun" and Anna going "nooooo please don't make me do this (please make me do this)". and then the angst, because of course Anna thinks Hayley invited her on a two month road trip around Scotland in a one bed campervan completely platonically
the book really hammers home how being around Hayley makes Anna a better version of herself, which I love as a romance beat when it comes off. also, one of the better role reversals when one lead gets hurt and stops trying to pursue the relationship, leading the other lead having to be the one to make the leap. very common beat, but done very well here
also, if your friend during truth or dare dares you to give her a lapdance it is not a platonic friendship Anna
I should’ve trusted my gut and DNFed this. I hate stories that perpetuate the idea that a woman has to change herself to be worthy of love. MC didn’t want to travel. She wanted to settle down. Everyone kept trying to convince her that everyone wants adventure and she should live life to its fullest, when all she wanted to chill in her little town, which is effing valid! Some people don’t want adventure ffs. And what happened at the end? She does a full 180 and decides to give up on everything she fundamentally wants out of life. Gross. Also the fact that haley just abandoned her and didn’t contact her for months MID-ARGUMENT is cis straight white male level of toxic. Like Anna literally didn’t trust her because she was scared she’d do that again and what does she do? She does it again! Omg the ending is just so bad I cannot. If Anna was my friend, I’d be having an intervention. And her friends are toxic for not doing that.

The characters really loved each other...but something felt off about the chemistry. I felt like I was missing something in the story perhaps Hannah's POV? I think the story would flow much better if we got a dual POV. I don't really know if this couple will last, I hope they do. I really liked the hard conversations they had with each other. I liked there wasn't much miscommunication for their older version, they really grew and showed growth. But at the end Hannah proposed to Anna? It felt too soon tbh especially considering the turmoil of their relationship despite knowing each other for 10 years. I wished we saw more into their future in the epilogue.
I absolutely loved the description of Scotland. Makes me really wanna travel there.

Wtf.The last 20% of the book ruined everything, absolutely everything, I even started liking Hayley ,and the whole book took a 180% where not only did I disliked Hayley but the fact that Anna was in love with her made me dislike Anna too.
I hated the way it was pushed as if Anna made a mistake in talking about their differences, as if Anna was the one that needed to change and beg Hayley for another chance, this made not only Anna's character stupid but the whole book, did she not learn anything since the beginning of this book?Oh and the flashbacks, the most unnecessary thing here ,sometimes It was cute but most times I was rolling my eyes everything I saw them
I loved this story, the intensity and stress these women survived and thrived!
Lisa Elliot has written one of the most intense and loving stories I have read. The style of writing took me a bit to get used to, switching in time back and forth. Once I understood the reason it was ok. The storyline built in intensity of anxiety and as it did I could feel my heart rate increase, then the love between the two women grew in intensity too, at last the sex got so hot, that it was a release for the characters as well as the reader! Yeah, this was a good read, share it and give credit to the author for a well written book!
Sorry but this was too cringe for me. The characters don't talk like real people, especially the "wild spirit" love interest. They don't sound different between 22 and 32yo. The whole story is of two people who pined for each other for ten years (which is sad and unhealthy) and then spend 2 months alone together having their dream trip so of course their rekindled romance cannot stand the test of real life. And so of course the very dramatic and soulmate-y last part is all about pretending they can make their different goals and needs work by forcing the introverted homebody to change and quit her job and be more adventurous despite loving her settled life and work, as if this is healthy.
A good second chance romance. There was undeniable chemistry between Anna and hayley from the start. Good romantic development and realistic issues were raised and solved in a mature manner. Plus, it was a slow burn that had some spice, which i love.
However, there were certain parts which i would have liked more clarification on, like about hayley's family or just more about hayley overall. Also, the side characters weren't overly involved, which was fine, but i would have liked them to be in more scenes.
I love most of it but not so much at the last part of the book. Although Anna and Hayley were attracted to each other, they had different lifestyles and goals. Even though it is possible for two different people to work things out, I felt that the communication between them was lacking. In fact, the way Hayley left while Anna was at work only confirmed Anna's fear. The ending felt forced, and it seemed like only one person compromised in the relationship, and it left me feeling unsettled.
Such a sweet and spicy love story! I really enjoyed the connection between the two MCs it was so precious!!! In the middle of the book I was getting frustrated with how much negative thinking and worrying the MC was doing but it really was an excellent depiction of how trauma and trust issues impact a relationship and how to work through that. It felt very real and was something I could relate to a lot. Great read!
I really wanted to love this book, but I couldn't.
Dialogues here are written so poorly it's almost painful to read. It feels like two AIs having those conversations.
I don't think in real life these two would stay together. I could see how Hayley changed, how her character developed, while Anna stayed the same - self-absorbed, insecure and not really ready for any changes.
There were some very frustrating moments about 75% of the way through this book, but if you push through them, you’ll understand how important they were to the character development. It was very interesting and different in some ways.
AMAZING! loved the tenderness of the book. The details & the depth of communication between them was beautiful. There were many times I wanted to slap some sense into Anna but I got where she was struggling. This book is definitely one I will remember

A bit too slow for my liking. I found the MC annoying but maybe that’s just me. Hayley was a top notch character, but sometimes felt like a caricature. The 2 stars are for Hayley’s character. The 0.75 is for the intriguing synopsis.
DNF at 25% Oof. The writing is not great. The plot has great potential but there is so much narrative distance and far too much telling and not nearly enough showing. And repetitive rehashing of the same internal conflict.
