Professor Problems is the third book in the ‘Brotherhood: Legacy’ series. It stars Jamie, a university professor and sub, and Aled, a college student and newbie Dom. This is told in third person from both Jamie and Aled’s povs.
The blurb does a good job of explaining the plot so I won’t go into it much. This is the second book of the series I’ve read and the subject matter is very different from Book Two. Jamie showed up in Book Two at the beginning and the end. At that time, he was still looking for a Dom with indications that his last Dom didn’t work out. Fair warning, this is a BDSM story. It is not vanilla BDSM. This is about a sub that enjoys pain, force, and being pushed to his limit. If that isn’t the type of story you like to read, don’t read this book, and then complain that you don’t like BDSM.
I often review covers because they represent the book. Sometimes they are spot on, and other times not. The cover model for this one does not represent either Jamie or Aled. Aled is described as having blond or golden hair, so it’s not him. The first time Aled sees Jamie, he describes Jamie as having soft brown hair down to his collar. The cover model does not have brown hair. The model has jet black hair which doesn’t mesh with Jamie’s description at all. Jamie’s family is also British royalty, and the cover model’s ethnicity doesn’t fall in within the generic white royal looks, the little that I know of it that is. I even went back to Book Two to see if Jamie’s appearance was described more clearly, but it was in reference to his glasses. So, I give the cover design a grade of ‘C’ because the model isn’t Jamie at all.
I’ve recently discovered this author’s contemporary and historical stories and I’ve been enjoying them. She has a knack for revealing the complicated psychological and emotional reasons of what people crave and do what they do, and how they come to accept their situations. In this story, Jamie is an older sub, and Aled is a younger Dom who has had the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings after a family tragedy. Aled has arrived at the Brotherhood’s event at the suggestion of his mentor, Kit, who is a mutual friend of Jamie’s, for some relaxation and some time to get away from Aled’s responsibilities. Kit has told Aled that Jamie is an experienced sub and to trust Jamie. Aled and Jamie click the first time they lay eyes on each other. Aled was unsure on how to start the scene with Jamie, but Kit observed for a bit and helped Aled get started. Once alone, Aled and Jamie fell into their play as if they’d known each other forever. Often in books that are erotica and say the couple fall in love from the sex, I can’t believe it, because there isn’t any emotional or psychological aspect to what is happening to the couple except for a lot of kinky sex. But in this book, I could believe that Aled and Jamie’s relationship blossomed when they started with BDSM. They found, and matched, what was an intricate part of who they were. From there, they dealt with the outside influences that crept in and impinged on their relationship.
Aled was the caretaker of his younger sister and brother. This happened because of a tragic event involving their parents. His sister’s psychological and emotional problems from the event creates some of the conflict in the plot. The tragedy also has Aled feeling that in some way he should have prevented it, should have seen it coming. Jamie’s calm presence and advice help Aled and the sister’s panic attacks. Jamie is a professor at the university. He counsels new students on classes, life situations, and emotional issues. Jamie must deal with a stalker ex-boyfriend who once was his Dom. Their relationship had grown abusive and Jamie had grown emotionally and was trying to move on, but kept falling back into play with his ex at events, until Aled showed up. However, the ex was vindictive and found out that Aled was going to school at the same university where Jamie taught. There’s more drama involved but I won’t go into it. I don’t want to get in too deeply about the ex, but I can see partly why he was the way he was. He only had Jamie so he held on, and refused to grow emotionally or psychologically. Maybe things would have been different if he had. Instead, the ex tried to keep their relationship the same as always, abusing Jamie to do so.
Overall, I enjoyed Professor Problems. It gives good insight into a consenting BDSM relationship that is not vanilla. The one thing that bothers me the most, is the cover model doesn’t match the description of Jamie. I liked the characters and the way the author handled the emotional and psychological problems and solutions. I recommend this book to those who like BDSM, and enjoy an older submissive man with a younger Dom. I give this a solid 4 Stars.
