He rescued her once, but a chance at love will require the ultimate sacrifice.

Alexander Morris bears the childhood scars of the Long Canes massacre that killed his brother and father. Forced by his dark past into the lonely life of Georgia Ranger, Alexander joins the bordering South Carolina Rangers in their revolt against the Crown. When he’s posted to the fort erected to defend the community once decimated by the massacre, duty demands he court the loyalty of his sworn enemies, the fierce Cherokee warriors.

Elspeth Lawrence never forgot the boy who sacrificed himself for her at Long Canes—any more than she forgot the younger sister taken captive. She’s learned not only to forgive, but also to help minister to the Cherokees at her father’s mission. When Alex Morris arrives at nearby Fort Charlotte, Elspeth finds her memories—and her emotions—stirred. He doesn’t even remember her…or the long-ago attack. But the bitterness that simmers just beneath his stoic exterior—as well as her courtship by a local landowner—challenge their undeniable bond.

When Alex uncovers a long-held secret and a plot to sabotage patriot talks with the Cherokees, he must choose between his desire for revenge and his love for the girl he rescued long ago.

“If anyone could break this heart of stone in me chest, ye could, lass. But it has been hard for too long.”

“‘A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your
flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.’” Her eyes settled again on his. “What me da said was true. I canna save ye, Alex. Only God can.”

The year is 1775, the place the colony of South Carolina. It is a time of great political uncertainty, as Patriots and Loyalists vie for not only control of the land, but an alliance with the Cherokee, the Native Americans in the area. Denise Weimer, in A Cherished Betrothal, introduces us to Lt. Alex Morrison and Elspeth Lawrence. While both Elspeth and Alex survived a horrific massacre of their neighboring families while children, Elpeth’s reaction is to depend on her faith and idolize Alex, who saved her. Alex’s reaction is to develop amnesia and turn away from the God Who would allow such a tragedy.

What I liked/loved about the book was the early American history including Native Americans and the location, South Carolina. I loved how Alex grudgingly learns to love someone unthinkable, but still struggle with forgiveness.

I loved that Elspeth hangs on to her dream, but want to ask, what if… Alex has married while she yearns for him, what if he never commits to her or Jesus? Or follows Him in a heart-chaging way. I love that Elspeth has to decide if she will release her most precious dreams to the Lord.

The secondary star of the show in this novel is Inoli! How I wanted to help heal him, hug him, show him a better way than the gods he grew up with.

I loved the eventual ending, with a caveat. One specific part of the HEA I thought I wanted, and got, didn’t fit my idea of reality. You’ll have to read the book to see what I mean. And maybe you’ll disagree. The novel would have gotten five stars from me, but I felt there were places it lagged a bit.

Overall, still a great read of the times in South Carolina frontier, preceding the Revolutionary War. A key statement I loved, showing more understanding of the complexity of the conflict between the Patriots, Loyalists, and Cherokee: “That these were people, not monsters. Their anger at the loss of their freedoms ranked no lower than his. Was he not joined to the Patriot cause, fighting for the same reasons as they? Whatever side they took, like the whites who remained divided, they took it for the best chance of preserving that freedom. Their way of life.”

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“Love your enemies. Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.”

“Could it be possible to battle even more effectively from a place of righteousness…right standing with God? Would God be the source of strength he could exchange for revenge? And would that lift the heaviness that had followed him for sixteen years? He could not imagine breathing free.”

Another satisfying read from the Scouts of the Frontier series. Each book is a standalone so they don’t necessarily need to be read in order. My heart was pulled in several directions as each fought for what they believed would bring freedom. The Long Canes massacre was a dark time in history but is what shaped these characters and affected each in a different way. Forgiveness is a bitter pill to swallow but for self healing necessary, but is possible only through God. The author has such an eye for historical detail and it is brought to life within these pages. At times the Scottish brogue tripped me up and didn’t make the story flow but was necessary for the realism. You will feel like you have been swept away to South Carolina in 1775 and are living in these difficult times due to descriptive words that dance on the page. A throughly satisfying historical read.

I truly enjoy Christian Historical Fiction Books. A Cherished Betrothal by Denise Weimer it is Book 3 in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series. I have been enjoying this series from the beginning.

The setting of the book is 1775 in South Carolina. Alexander Morris will never forget the Long Canes massacre. He lost his father and brother and he has many visible scars from fighting. He has recently joined the South Carolina Rangers, leaving Georgia behind. His duty will be to defend the community that was torn apart by the Massacre and his enemies, the Cherokee Indians. Elspeth Lawrence remembers how she was saved during the Massacre with help from a boy. She has learned not only to forgive, but she has taken to ministering to the Cherokees through her dad's mission. Elspeth's emotions are all over the place when she discovers Alex Morris has arrived at Fort Charlotte. Alex was the one who rescued her and his has bitterness but there is also a bond that they cannot deny. Elspeth and her Dad have begun to minister to Alex and he seems interested in the faith. Alex is forced to choose between fighting for the Cherokees or a relationship with Elspeth due to a secret plot he uncovered. Will Alex's bitterness soften as he grows in faith? Will there be a LOVE relationship between the pair?

WOW, this storyline is amazing right from the start. Alex is an AMAZING character who is wanting to do the right thing and moves to South Carolina to leave his past behind. His reaction and not remembering Elspeth, were a little sad. I love that she was able to help him remember her. The bond between the pair is beautiful and watching Alex's heart change as he is ministered to. Elspeth's faith in God and helping the Cherokees makes the storyline just amazing. The book is about Faith, Family and LOVE. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!

I loved the character development in this story! Elspeth and Alex have a very complicated history. When they were young, they were involved in a massacre by the Cherokee where Alex had a brother murdered and Elsbeth's sister was taken captive, never to be seen again. Alex sacrificed himself for Elspeth and still bears the scars of the attack to this day, but he also doesn't remember the attack. Elsbeth, although she was small, remembers Alex as her hero and has been looking for him ever since. When they cross paths years later, she finally gets to thank him for saving her life! Alex is drawn to her but needs Elspeth to remind him why. He is in the Army now, fighting for the Patriot cause, but also involved with the Indian situation. He holds a lot of anger and as Elspeth, and her faith (and her father, who is a minister) work on Alex, his heart begins to change. I really liked how realistic is was because it took a long time and many experiences for both Alex's heart to soften and Elspeth to gain patience in waiting for Alex to return her love. It wasn't "instant" or "quick". These things take time and we have to go through many things! Elspeth and her father have Indians living with them (they are teaching them) which is something that is hard for Alex to understand and even though he is living at the Army fort, he still comes in contact with them a lot. His journey to forgiveness and eventually towards love is a beautiful thing.

What I think you should know:
A Cherished Betrothal is Christian Historical Fiction by Denise Weimer. It is the third book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series. It is set in the 1775 Frontier of South Carolina and Georgia and can be read as a standalone. This book features Elspth Lawrence, the daughter of a pastor and Georgia Ranger Alexander Morris.

What you might need to know:
This book tries to give an authentic portrayal from a settler’s perspective, it does include both conflict with Native Americans and hostility between the Patriots and the Loyalists. It gives a brutal look at wartime violence.

What I think about this book:
This was such a fascinating book. I appreciate how the author showed the strength and fortitude that was required to survive in the wilds of the colonies. It was very interesting to read the book from the perspective of Elspeth whose father, a pastor, tried not to take sides and instead tried to show God’s love to all people. Alex was a very realistic character, he had lost so much, but grew as a character and a man during this book. As a South Carolina native, genealogy and history buff, I loved this book, the places were familiar to me and the people could have been my ancestors. I can't wait to read more in the series .

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Reading this book has given me a glimpse of a time in history that I'd never known before! A Cherished Betrothal begins in 1775 but much of the backstory revolves around a Cherokee attack that took the lives of many settlers in southern Georgia in 1760. This moving story relates to two of the survivors and how they've dealt with the repercussions of this tragedy. One has chosen a life of faith and service, and the other has allowed bitterness to color his world.

A Cherished Betrothal is an intriguing historical romance and a wonderful addition to the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series! It's a poignant depiction of Elspeth Lawrence's love and devotion for a young boy who once saved her life, and her determined efforts to help him overcome his hatred and bitterness. Can she guide him on his journey to healing and forgiveness? Will he recognize the emotional ties that bind him to Elspeth?

Author Denise Weimer's love for history and her ability to weave truth with fiction is very evident in this captivating story, and I appreciate that many of her research findings are included in her author's notes. I recommend A Cherished Betrothal to all who enjoy historical Christian fiction.

I received a complimentary digital copy from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review.

Alexander and Elspeth not only knew each other as children, but both of them survived a harrowing massacre together. Watching their family and friends be kidnapped and slaughtered, Alexander saves Elspeth, but the physical scars have remained with him even if the memories have not.

Elspeth remembers that time, and for fifteen years has wanted to be reunited with Alex. That time comes, but in the dangerous face of rebellion, with Patriots and Loyalists and Native Americans all churning in a bubbling pot of a coming war. There is danger all around and no one knows who to trust. Will Elspeth help Alex remember the important things and win his love, or will Alex leave for good? Can forgiveness and healing really take the place of hate and rage?

This was the story of the beginnings of the USA and its fight for freedom taking place in Georgia. The danger and the sacrifice these settlers and soldiers took to make their way in this land and in this world. The author's descriptive style of all that was going on made this reader feel the urgency all around for these characters, their lives and love.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

A Cherished Betrothal is the third exciting book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Series. Denise Weimer brings the beginning of the Revolutionary War to blazing life with the conflicts, divided opinion and differences between people and cultures. Elspeth Lawrence’s father is a pastor and often speaks of prayer in this story. If ever a time needed it, it was then. Much like our country can seem divided today, prayer and charity are needed. Here is a written example of such for us to use as a model.

Alexander Morris is an honorable man but also a harsh, bitter one too. Seeing how the Lord works in his life to overcome the tragedies from childhood is such a fabulous read. It was a compelling one that I found hard to put down even when it became late in the evening. Just a wonderful romance as Elspeth and Alexander renew their acquaintance from childhood, work through the trauma they endured and seek God’s forgiveness so they can forgive others. I highly recommend A Cherished Betrothal to all historical fiction readers. Be sure to check out all the research the author conducted for this book; I was amazed.

The publisher Wild Hearts Books provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.

A Cherished Betrothal” is a story of forgiveness, healing, and redemption set against the backdrop of the late 1700s conflicts between Cherokee Natives and settlers. Even as the third book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series, it stands strong on its own.

Elspeth’s forgiveness amidst significant heartache at the hands of the Cherokee resonates deeply, showcasing her admirable strength and inspiring ability to extend grace. Likewise, Alex is a hero with layers, his sacrifices and inner conflicts add richness to the story. His spiritual journey is palpable, enabling me to witness his transformation fully engaged and with empathy.

This novella weaves together elements of danger, romance, and biblical wisdom. I enjoyed the compelling storyline and its themes of faith and resilience. It is a poignant and inspiring read, particularly suited for those who enjoy Christian Historical fiction.

A Cherished Betrothal, by Denise Weimer, is the third book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series. These are stand alone stories with different characters. I felt this story started out a little slow, but quickly got caught up in the story. This story is of Alexander and the Lawrence's family and what they went through years earlier when their area was attacked and members of their family were killed or taken from them. We see the scars this incident left on them and how they each dealt with it.
This story is enjoyable to read and see how God has helped Elspeth deal with her past. She becomes a strong young woman who longs to help others even those connected to the the attack. It is easy to understand how Alexander felt and very heartwarming to see the change that comes over him from reading the Bible. I appreciate the guidance Elspeth's father gives to her about how she is making decisions for helping Alexander.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.

A powerful story! Survivors of an Indian massacre, Elspeth and her father, a preacher, forgave them and are missionaries to the Cherokee in the area where they live. Alex is a Patriot soldier and doesn't recall the details of when he and Elspeth attacked. A story of love, forgiveness and redemption as well was a story of America. Very real, I found myself wanting to tell my husband when things happened in the story, and could clearly hear their Scottish brogues, nearly slipping and speaking that way myself. Excellent story with strong Christian lessons and faith, beautifully applied. Bravo Alex! I only wish there was a bit more to their tale, that the story had lasted longer.

A Cherished Betrothal by Denise Weimer is a Christian Historical Romance. As the third book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier, this book takes place in the days before the Revolutionary War. When Elspeth Lawrence sets eyes on Alexander Morris, she immediately recognizes him as the one who saved her life during the Long Canes Massacre.

These characters and their family and friends have to overcome a lot in the book in Georgia and the Carolinas. Called to minister to the Cherokees, Elspeth and her father are caught up in scenarios they did not expect or want.

This book will take you through twists and turns to keep you reading and wanting more. The character development and how the author reveals parts of their pasts and presents create a meaningful and realistic view of what life may have been like during that time.

So, if you want a Christian Historical Romance, check out A Cherished Betrothal by Denise Weimer.

A Cherished Betrothal is a wonderful historical fiction novel but also its part of a neat series that you won’t want to miss out on. Step back in time to the Revolutionary War era. You’ll love how this book shapes up! It will leave you in suspense and also show you a wonderful romance.

I’m a huge fan of historical fiction. However, I’m not a huge Revolutionary War-era reader. This series has made me a fan of at least this author and her portrayal of the war years and the people who lived through it.

The characters are wonderful. You get to see them grow throughout the novel and come to terms with their pasts. And more than just that, you get to watch them overcome their fears. Oh and did I mention some romance as well?!

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

A Cherished Betrothal is the 3rd book in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series by Denise Weimer. Set in the Georgia Frontier, it’s the story of Elspeth Lawrence and Alexander Morris.
Elspeth is a teacher, and her father is a missionary to the Cherokee Indians. They have taken in young children to teach and to spread the Good News of Christianity. Fifteen years before, both their families were ambushed in the Long Canes War. Lives were lost and Elspeth hasn’t seen her youngest sister since. Alex is now a Patriot Ranger with the South Carolina Regiment and patrols the territory. When they meet again, Alex doesn’t readily recognize Elspeth, but she is adamant about helping him remember their past. She has missed him and loved him since the ambush.
The story keeps Alex and Elspeth together, throwing danger and conspiracy into their lives. They deal with the past in their way, questioning God, questioning themselves, and finding answers.

Author Denise Weimer has penned another meticulously researched story in this third book of her Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series. I feel like I always learn something new when I pick up one of her books. She has a way of bringing history to life and I appreciated her author’s notes at the conclusion of the book. Elspeth Lawrence and Alex Morris shared a tragic past and it was very uplifting to read how they each grew personally and spiritually throughout the book. While there was a lot of information to take in while reading, the overarching messages of forgiveness and trusting God were beautifully presented. This book is definitely not a light read and will draw out your emotions, but it's inspirational messages of hope are well worth your time.

Great story with wonderful characters. Loved the time period and the historical facts that made it more realistic. The emotions are raw in the story and draw readers to understand them better. Good story that features Native Americans. I did like the struggle that was felt very strongly when faced with a traumatic event by one of the characters. Her pain was real as she struggled with trying to move forward.

It was difficult to understand how this person could have forgotten the pain he caused and there were moments where anger may have come over the victim. It is a book that illustrates how people looked upon others in a way that was unkind. I think it is important to note that during this time period battles broke out between people from different backgrounds. Forgiveness was hard to deal with as one of the characters still carried bitterness. Overall good story.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

I have adored the first two books from the Denise Weimer series, Scouts of the Georgia Frontier, was exited to have an opportunity to read book three, A Cherished Betrothal. I enjoyed Alex and Elspeth's story. It was one that had me wanting to learn more about the two and seeing what choices they would make in the end. I thought it was great.

I am giving A Cherished Betrothal a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical romance. I am eagerly waiting for the release of the fourth installment from the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier, A Conflicted Betrothal to see who I will be meeting and what adventures await next.

*Warning: This is not a fluffy romance.* It is about people and families facing their past and healing and trusting God.

Alexander Morris and Elspeth Lawrence faced a horrible life changing event in their childhood which resulted in the loss of Alex’s brother and Elspeth’s sister, mother, and brothers. Years later, Alex has repressed the memories while Elspeth has mostly healed, but cannot forget her lost sister Leana. A chance encounter when Alex is stationed at a fort near Elspeth and her father’s mission leaves Elspeth disappointed, but determined to get Alex to remember her. As Alex’s memories return and his brother’s killer makes an appearance, Alex is set on revenge. Can Elspeth help him make peace with his past by sharing the word of God?

This was a good story about learning to forgive others who have hurt us. I liked how Elspeth was able to forgive the Cherokee for what they did when she was a child and was willing to help Alex to learn to let go of his anger and forgive them. I liked to see the healing that took place in both of them. I also liked how the author taught us a little bit about the Revolutionary war and what people went through as they tried to pick the side to be on. I thought the author did a good job of giving us characters that we cared about and making us want to keep reading the story.

What an emotional story!  Times were so much more difficult then.  Illness, injuries and even Indian attacks were possible.  Elspeth never forgot what happened to her and her family so many years ago.  She didn't forget the boy who not only rescued her but captured her heart.

Alex never forgot what happened to his family but he held on to the anger and pain. He was set on revenge. Elspeth and her father knew that the only way for Alex to find peace was through GOD'S grace.

The story was beautifully written.  Denise Weimer did an excellent job writing A Cherished Betrothal.  Her research and dedication to her readers shows in this book.

I found this book to be well written. It has a lot of actual historical events in it and I did get a little confused with all the historical people and trying to keep track of which side the were on. The book has a good biblical faith thread and the themes of forgiveness and release are prominent. I liked the characters and seeing them grow. While this is in a series, the books are standalones and don't have overlapping characters at all so you could read them in any order. I look forward to reading more books by Denise Weimer.

I would like to give this a 3.5, but that GR doesn't allow it. Of all the books in the series, this was the hardest to read. The author mentioned in her acknowledgment that this sort of book is hard to write or read (pg 280), so I will say that I agree.

The characters in general were interesting, and the fault was not in the story, but it was in the litany of historical people mentioned. The story was bogged down repeatedly by who was in each camp, Loyalist, Patriot, and of course, each time we met a new individual, it was also necessary to hear which they were. But they also went back and forth with no role remaining fixed for long.

Seiner never disappoints

A Cherish Betrothal set in the days before the Revolutionary War in the backcountry of Georgia and the Carolinas. A time when there were more Natives than white settlers. I love the backstory crafted for Elizapeth and Alex. The story surrounding them as they each struggle to find their path in the coming rebellion and their growing affection for each other kept me engaged. The focus on forgiveness grew natural as danger lurks all around. Denise Weimer is a wonderful story teller. And this novella is an amazing example of that talent.

I was excited for the chance to read and review A Cherished Betrothal, which is the third in the Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series. It is equally as intriguing as the first two. This is an era of US history I don't remember ever learning about, and this series makes me want to learn more.

I enjoyed the spiritual growth that both Alex and Elspeth had, and understand Alex's struggle to forgive.

If you enjoy history, especially history of early Georgia, and a hint of romance, you will definitely want to add this story to your to-read list!

In A Cherished Betrothal, Denise Weimer spins a tale of fiction but artfully incorporates many real-life figures and events to strengthen the story. Faith threads through the book and the love story is sweet. Who can resist unrequited love that starts in childhood and lives on in the girl's heart, even though the boy has been gone for sixteen years? Not me! And this hero is definitely worth the wait.

This story was not a feel good tale. It was a good book. It is a story with both history and fiction within its pages. It is a tale about the way between the Cherokee Indians and white men. It is also a tale of forgiveness and a long time hope for love coming true. This is the third book in the series but can be read as a stand-alone. I have enjoyed all three.

Weimer weaves the historical period into the narrative brilliantly. As readers, we are given a vivid glimpse into the times and traditions of the Cherokee. I commend Weimer's ability to infuse the harsh reality of the Cherokee history, especially their expulsion during the infamous Trail of Tears, into the storyline. It's quite an evocative read, which hits hard on the plight of Native Americans.
Elspeth's and Alex's journey with Jesus is depicted in a beautiful manner. Weimer displays a natural ability to weave Christian teachings and biblical wisdom into her characters’ experiences. It isn't forceful or didactic, yet manages to echo with an underlying tone of God's grace and His message of love, forgiveness, and salvation.
The writing style of Denise Weimer is captivating and powerful. It engrosses you and takes you into the world of Alex and Elspeth. You feel their turmoil, share their pain and victories, and go through the path of redemption and acceptance with them. It is a testament to Weimer's exceptional writing that despite the book dealing with complex and sometimes dark themes, you will leave feeling uplifted and inspired.
I recommend this book to readers who appreciate historical fiction that carries significant moral themes and love a well-narrated story with complex and engaging characters. Also, if you're interested in Cherokee history or have a curiosity about faith-related books, this should certainly make for a fascinating read.
Overall, this book has left a deep and lasting impression. The combination of history, Christian teachings, love, forgiveness, and the rich, multifaceted characters make this book a worthwhile read. Denise Weimer has undoubtedly delivered an impressive work of historical fiction.
I received a complimentary copy by the author through Celebrate Lit for my honest opinion.
