As a teacher of English Language Learners, this book was very validating for me -- what I do in my classroom already mirrors the strategies in this book. The good news is: these strategies would benefit ANY student in ANY classroom regardless of their background. Especially, however, if you work with students who are traditionally more at a disadvantage due to where they live, their race, or any other circumstance, these strategies will raise their confidence and get them thinking and learning to their absolute potential.

The seven strategies are laid out pretty quickly and there are appendices that provide information on how to write clear content and language objectives as well as many strategies you can use in your classroom right away.

Highly recommend!

You'd think something given to me by a colleague, a math teacher, explaining that this is a great pedagogy book devoid of math would send me packing. But there are some great ideas and illustrations for a thinking classroom. This is a precursor to the works of Dr. Peter Liljedal, thinking classrooms in mathematics, https://buildingthinkingclassrooms.com/

Quick read of some great strategies to make sure all students participate as learners through speaking and writing, listening and reading. For all grade levels, although the last 2 chapters are heavier with secondary level appropriate strategies.

I feel like a lot of this information was a review from my education courses in college (17 years ago). There are definitely great ideas applicable to all classrooms!

Every teacher needs to read this book. Every school needs to adhere to these 7 practices. They are excellent strategies for all learners, but especially for English Language Learners. I can't praise this book enough.

There were a lot of really good strategies for helping to get students to think more critically. I liked the FAQS sections at the end of each step. This helped address the questions we usually have after being presented with new teaching strategies. I also liked that there were ideas for all core subject areas. I look forward to implementing a good deal of these strategies in my middle school language arts classroom. This was a quick read and an excellent resource to keep handy all school year.
