Warner's little book is a very, very basic exploration of why and how the United Methodist Church is the way it is--Wesleyan. Essentially, Warner assumes you know nothing about the UMC. If that is the case, Warner is probably a good place to start, especially as her treatment is based in a narrative and not just information. But if you already know some about the UMC and have any questions or are looking for a thorough background, look elsewhere.

A refreshing look at the Methodist DNA that remembers history and integrates the modern day experience. With commentary on pandemics and polemics, an emphasis on small groups, mission, connectionalism, and grace provides hope for the future. The last chapter includes a beautiful and elegant metaphor for the future of the United Methodist Church.

My Sunday school class found this book informative. It is chock full of facts about the UMC, some basic, some that were new to long time members. It is a very dry read though, and honestly it’s poorly written. I wish the whole book had been as engaging as the last section of the last chapter, which wove together the author’s personal experience with her presentation of concepts.
