Mason- My mother left me and my dad when I was three. I spent my childhood believing that women could not be trusted and that I needed to proceed with caution. Until high school that is. Suddenly as a teenager, girls were throwing themselves at me. Call it puberty or clear disinterest in them that left most pining for me. By the time I got to college, I reveled in it. I had no feelings, no emotions with them, I’d give them a quick ride, then send them on their way. Except one. My best friend’s sister.
Bailey- One might say that I was the perfect daughter and sister. I did everything right until I didn't. I never expected to fall for a guy like my ex-boyfriend and the ramifications of that relationship's demise would change my life forever. That's one of the reasons why I became a flight attendant. I craved to have my freedom back. It wasn’t until I finally felt like everything was under control and that I had things figured out, that my life would truly be turned on its side. And the only one I have to blame is my brother’s best friend.
M.J. Huxley strives to tell authentic stories of raw, unfiltered, and imperfect love. She writes emotional romances with banter & spice. M.J.'s books will always have a happily ever after, but that doesn't mean her characters won’t have to work hard to get there.
She currently lives in Arizona with her husband and her tiny humans.
Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.
Ya'll, this book is chock full of so many tropes that I love! We've got enemies-to-lovers, brother's best friend, single mom, and friends-with-benefits to name a few.
The way that the author executed these tropes was fantastic. the writing style captured me straight away and the plot was so compelling that I couldn't put the book down. The world-building was so well-crafted that I felt like I was transplanted into the world.
These characters won me over from the get-go. I was so obsessed with them. These characters were extremely relatable and I empathized with them so much. Each character was filled with so much originality. I love how distinct all of the characters were. The character development was so satisfying and so thorough.
This was a spicy love story filled to the brim with emotions. The sexual tension between Bailey and Mason was off the charts. They had chemistry that leaped off the page.
Overall, this was an emotional and well-crafted story that really made an impression. There were heartwarming moments and intense moments that blended perfectly to create quite an inspiring story. This seems to be this author's debut and I am quite impressed with it. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more from this author!
Book: Light Behind the Lies (Tangerine Sky Book 1) Author: @authormjhuxley Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice Rating: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
How I feel about the Book: 🌵☀️⚽️✈️
This is the first time I've read from the author for me. I am going to a book con in September and was given her name as a recommendation to read since she is an attending author!
This was a great read! I feel like I am finding more authors who write women from a women's perspective. I know that sounds weird because most romance books are written by women. Most of those authors make women into these never developing characters who are just weak and never grow to be true strong leads in a story. Anyways that's a rant for another time that I could ramble on about.
Back to the book itself. Bailey is a strong character who I liked reading about. I feel relatable a lot to her trying to navigate a world broken hearted after loving someone with addiction. That really really resonated with me. I appreciate Mason for everything that he was and how he is the ideal partner most women would want when they are single parents. The care, the attention to detail, the showing up kind of attitude.
My only setback was wanting to see what spicy side he really had in him. Nonetheless, it was a great book with the right balance of spice and plot.
I will definitely continue in this series(Tangerine Sky) and more from the author.

5- Stars I have some thoughts! First, this book is great! I was completely moved by the way the author tackled trauma and even though someone might have a good support system, that doesn't mean trauma just "goes away".
Emotionally maturing comes with recognizing it and learning to live and grow from it. I thought that was done very well with the two main characters. Bailey was sweet and relatable, Mason was a babe and I loved how the two of them grew during the book. I think these topics are hard to address and not always depicted in books in a real way. This book does that and I appreciate it.
Those first few chapters had me pretty emotional and I thought it was a really good way to give the reader insight into the main characters' backgrounds and what they were working toward throughout the rest of the book.
I loved the spice and banter. Both elements were done well! The dynamic between Bailey and Mason was awesome. I laughed, cried, and blushed.
Thank you to the author MJ Huxley for the opportunity to read your book baby! I look forward to more books to come.
A great enemies to lovers read. I enjoyed the brother’s best friend aspect of the trope as well. Bailey and Mason had a lot of baggage and their personal growth in the story was my favorite part. I really enjoyed the way the author depicted loving someone with an addiction. It was very realistic and emotional.
I really enjoyed this book! The romance comes after the spice :)
Bailey Waver and Mason Miller have always been at odds since college and a few years later nothing has changed, except that Mason is back in her hometown for good. Mason also happens to be her bothers' best friend and new business partner. He's a man whore she can't stand who has also moved into her apartment building temporarily. Bailey and Mason are more alike than they realize.
When Bailey and Mason propose a friends with benefits situation what could go wrong. They agree to only be with each other any time they want, no feelings, no expectations, no relationship. But when walls start coming down will they give in or walk away from each other with regrets of what could be.
I absolutely loved this book. It starts off banter, spice and then romance. I was rooting for these 2 from the very beginning. Even when their real feelings came out they made it so hard to just be with each other. Excuses were being thrown around instead of just listening to their hearts and the trust they built within each other.
This is a great read that isn't overly spicy and has swoon worthy romance. M.J. Huxley did amazing with this book and I can't wait for more in this series!
Check your trigger warnings. Mild topics talked about.
I adore the brother’s best friend trope. Author MJ Huxley combines enemies-to-lovers and friends-with-benefits with a single mom. A single mom, Bailey, has always had contention with her brother’s best friend, Mason—they can barely be left together in a room without exchanging snarky comments. But behind all the snarkiness hides an enormous amount of schm3xual tension waiting to combust. And does it ever!
Bailey and Mason have emotional hang-ups and are not looking for anything serious. They agree to hooking up on the down low only. The scenes MJ Huxely had throughout this story were spicy. But she also managed to create a character that I initially disliked— Mason—and then have his character evolve through the story to the point I finally had compassion for.
Bailey’s story broke my heart, and having her son Luca form the relationship he did with Mason was incredibly heartwarming.
“Light Behind the Lies” is one of those stories that I didn’t want to see end. Mason and Bailey’s HEA was perfect.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.
This one just fell short for me. I took into consideration that this book is the author's debut, but I had a really hard time getting into it. It felt very repetitive to me and I really couldn't connect with any of the characters. While this book wasn't my cup of tea, it may just be yours.
*I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was unbelievably good! It made me feel soo many emotions! I loved the main characters and their chemistry. The enemies to lovers trope was perfect!
Thank you to M.J. Huxley and The Author Agency for an advanced copy of this book.
Summary: As a 3 year old, Mason's mom left him and his dad and so since then he does not trust women at all. Women, however, seem to flock to him despite his indifference and fear of commitment. He's had zero emotions around any of them, except for his best friend's sister.
Bailey came to be a mother in a way that she didn't see coming, so becoming a flight attendant seemed like the perfect way to be free. Despite her love for her son Luca, she is able to get that little break that's needed from being a single mom. Among her tight group of girls, fellow flight attendants, Bailey finally fells like life is under control. Until her brother's best friend enters the picture.
Dani's Thoughts:
I fell in love with this story pretty quickly. The beginning just really drew me in with the back stories for both Mason and Bailey. Both experienced very different life altering times, but both carry major scars with them now. Bailey is so strong to not only overcome the relationship she had with Tyler, but also to turn her life around with her love for Luca and love for her career as a flight attendant. There were times throughout that Mason just drove me nuts, despite my for love him from so many of his actions. His experience with his mother abandoning him at such a young age dug such a deep scar it was hard for him to ever feel that he could give his heart away to be loved.
I'm so thankful this was a dual POV as I could see how Mason's heart was beginning to thaw the more he was around Luca and Bailey. Luca reminded me of my own little 4 turning 5 year old boys. He could honestly melt any frozen heart. Finally, I loved Bailey's group of friends, whom are also flight attendants. They are there for each other and give Bailey advice even if she doesn't like it. I cannot wait to see who's love story is next in Book 2.

I absolutely loved this book and seeing Mason fall in love🫠
This is about Mason and Bailey.
Baileys brother and Mason are best friends and are now going into business together. They are opening a restaurant so Mason is going to be around a lot more.
Bailey doesn’t care for Mason because of the trouble he got baileys brother into in college among other things.
Baileys ex Tyler goes down a dark path and she knows she has to walk away… Well after she walked away she found out she was pregnant.
Luca is now 5 years old and doesn’t know who is dad is at all. Tyler still isn’t clean and has never been involved.
Bailey and Mason run into each other at the airport. She is a flight attendant.
They bicker back and forth all the time. Ever since college he has always seen her differently but never did anything about it.
They make an arrangement to just sleep together but as we all know feelings eventually form and show up….
A lot happens… Mason is beyond amazing with Bailey and her son but he is trying to fight feelings and she is scared…
I love how you see him fall and hard. I love their connection. I love how strong Bailey is for herself and her son. I love how Mason comes to her after getting bad news. I love their banter. I love how he is the one to express his feelings first.
"I WANT TO BE WITH YOU. YOU'VE BECOME A PART OF ME, BAILEY. YOU AND LUCA FEEL LIKE HOME. YOUR VERY ESSENCE FEELS LIKE HOME. YOU OCCUPY MY THOUGHTS EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY," HE WHISPERS. "THAT'S NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE." HE TAKES TWO FINGERS UNDER MY CHIN, GENTLY TILTING MY HEAD TOWARD HIS. MY EYES FALL CLOSED, AND I FEEL HIS SOFT LIPS KISS ME HARD AND DEEP. IT'S MAGNETIC AND FILLED WITH LOVE.
Bailey is a single mom who comes from a strong supportive family. She’s also a flight attendant(one of my favorite micro tropes). She has had a hatred for her brother’s best friend, Mason, since college. She spots him at an airport and gets in a little banter tiff with him. Then she finds out he’s on her plane. She’s always been so attracted to him but his playboy ways makes her not interested.
Mason is moving from Burbank, Ca to Arizona to open up a new restaurant with his best friend. He’s always been so against commitment and relationships due to his mother leaving him when he was 3.
Bailey and Mason bump into each other again at a hotel and decide to have a drink together. Well… drinks lead to deciding to hook up and then decide to have a hook up relationship. We all know that never works. These two show their feelings in their own special way. I really loved seeing the growth of Mason and how he becomes present in Bailey and her son’s life. I also really loved Bailey. The first chapter broke me and seeing her be strong throughout the whole book, I absolutely adored!

Tropes: Enemies to Lovers Brother’s Best Friend Secret Hook Up Single Mom It’s always been you
Ok let me start by saying I love the setting of this book as Phoenix and Scottsdale is where I am from and grew up so off the bat this story felt like home! Now onto the story the plot from the beginning is so gut wrenchingly good! I loved the dual POV and I feel like it really added so much more to this story in particular because Mason is so damaged by his early childhood and it completely sets the tone for the book. And Bailey too their history chapters had be feeling all the feels! And it just unfolds like a beautiful rose in the middle of a raging desert storm in August in Arizona! It was such a beautiful journey for the two MCs and Luca awww that little guy has my heart! It’s got the romance that goes from what is seemly just physical (which only the two MCs delusional to believe, because anyone with eyeballs can see the real story!) anyway like I was saying physical but then it shifts into a beautiful story of letting down walls and falling into the person who you’re meant to be with even when it’s terrifying and doing it anyway! It was so good the banter, the plot, again the two MCs who are perfect for each other but get in their own ways for a while. I loved this book definitely going to be re playing it in my mind!

This debut novel was right up my alley with brothers best friend and all my other favorite tropes. I will say please check your trigger warnings for this. Talks about subst@nce ab*se and the effects it has on people, their relationships, and how they carry themselves after that.
It's hard going through something of that magnitude, especially if you're a single parent and dont have a support system. If you or someone you know is going through hard times, know you are not alone.
On the lighter note, i really enjoyed the banter and basically hate f*cking they did. I was really hoping for some plane sex or something something spicy happening, but... maybe it will happen later in the series. Hehe. 😉

I really loved Bailey and Mason’s story. It took a while to get there, but they have a sweet love story, so be patient. There’s a lot of tropes with this one, and two of my favorites: brother’s best friend and enemies to lovers. And ooh the spice—just perfect! The scene in the new house bedroom, I will never forget! This is a pretty quick read.
Bailey being a single mom just resonated with me and I found her to be an authentic character. She’s sweet and loves her little man! Her family was so sweet! All the characters in this book are pretty likable and you will see more of them in the future!
There’s some addiction issues in the beginning that the author was very caring in her approach, and I thought was a great way to begin the book—it had you feeling for Bailey immediately.
This was such a heartwarming and emotional story. I was hooked within the first couple of chapters as we are introduced to the two main characters and their back story that shapes who they are today. Bailey is a single mom to an adorable little boy, she is a flight attendant. Mason had a traumatic childhood when his mom left him and his dad get early on. This trauma he has dealt with all his life. His best friend happens to be Bailey’s brother. He is moving back home to open a restaurant with him. I loved the forbidden secret relationship that developed between Bailey and Mason. They both had some similarities with their past trauma and could really help each other grow. I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded. The tropes in the story including brother’s best friend.
Goshhh I devoured this book in one sitting! The BANTER between these MC was unmatched! You could tell the sexual tension between them was thick from the first encounter. Deep down they knew the game they were playing was risky and honestly that made it all the better! My favorite part about this entire book was watching how hard Mason fell for her. Theirs just something about when the man who swears he's never gonna fall in love finally breaks! Bailey is a strong bad as$ mother. The strength she had to walk away and then the strength she had to fight to give her son a life without the heartbreak of his father's actions is incredible. Her finally getting her family in the end was perfect. The way Mason loves her and Luca and the way Luca loves Mason.
Talk about an enemies to lovers book! This book will have you yelling, crying and laughing throughout. You have single mom Bailey and brother’s best friend Mason who absolutely hate each other, but have to interact and are thrown together constantly. The story is raw and the character development is easy to follow. Overall a great read!
It does have some hard topics so you will want to check trigger warnings.

Luca reminded me of my own little 5 year old twins niece/nephew. Mason could honestly melt any frozen heart. Lastly, I loved Bailey's group of friends and support system from job, whom are also flight attendants. They are there for each other and give Bailey advice even if she doesn't like it. I cannot wait to see whose love story is next in Book 2.
This book kept me non stop reading. I couldn’t stop. It was so good. I was nervous at first with the prologue but the farther I got into it I couldn’t stop. I haven’t read an MJ Huxley book before and now I want to read more. The relationship that develops is so good and the banter that still continues. Highly suggest this read!

My Review: I honestly thought I posted this A LOT SOONER. Dealing with a lot of health and family problems got to me. I'm so sorry. Any who I LOVED MASON FROM THE GET GO!!! Geez, he was honest and hot and hot and smart af!!! He also cares when he acts like he don't. There is not one negative thing I can say about my man 🥴🫠🥵. Sneak over to my place anytime.
Bailey is just a awesome and strong mother. She is just overall amazing as well and I give her all the props. The shit she had to deal with and with Mason she deserves everything good in life. Her little dude is so cute and reminds me of my son. 🥰 always in someone's business 😂.
It's out now you must go get it asap!! This book will NOT disappoint you. I'm telling you it's beautiful and touching.
This is the first book I have read by the author and definitely enjoyed it. I am excited to read the rest of the series. The beginning of the story was filled with a lot of emotions. It was a good way to see and understand Bailey’s history. This first chapter had me breaking for Bailey but she was so strong throughout the book.
Bailey and Mason have known each other for years because he is her brother’s best friend but they hate each other. Bailey and Mason end up having a drink together and that leads to a hook up and then that leads to a hook up only relationship but that never really happens. The dynamic between Bailey and Mason was awesome. I loved the spice and banter between them. Both Bailey and Mason grew throughout the story. Some of the topics are difficult but the author did a great job representing them. Mason was so sweet to Luca (Bailey’s son) and treated him like his own.

"That's right B, you can take it."
Bailey's a single mom and flight attendant. Her son and her job are her priorities. She's happy with her group of friends and her life. Then he came back into her life.
Mason's her older brother's best friend. A player. A conceited man-whore. He doesn't do relationships.
They've both been dealt some hard situations in their past. They both have unresolved issues that affect their current decisions. Maybe they're what each other need to heal.
I loved watching Masons character evolve throughout the book. It's like he grows from a boy to a man. Bailey is just the woman he needs to knock him on his butt.
I loved this book and look forward to more from this author.
I just finished this one today, and I really enjoyed it! We’ve got a brother’s best friend, enemies to lovers, single mom, friends with benefits and a little found family. I enjoyed the entire storyline of this book from the very beginning. We get the back story of both our main characters plus a little of what’s going on in the present with their first chapters and it really leads the way for how they could bond even though they don’t like each other and never really have. I enjoyed the banter, it felt more real, like those conversations would actually happen that way. I also enjoyed the smut. Since the book is more plot and character driven, the smut was just right and the realistic encounters made it easy to read. 🌶️🌶️
I finished this book so fast! I could not put it down. Bailey and Mason start off as enemies, but soon they cross the line and attempt to just be ‘friends with benefits’. Sparks are flying, lines are blurred, and feelings start to catch. Mason is a player, never saw himself with one girl. Bailey is different, but it’s also his best friend’s sister. I loved their chemistry together and how hot the two of them are together. Also a little spicy 🌶️ I recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast, spicy romantic book. The writing was very good and it made it easy to finish.
Bailey Weaver has always cared about people and tried to see the best in them until she finally couldn’t give anymore to her ex-boyfriend Tyler. Yet she got something amazing from the relationship and decided to become a flight attendant to feel like she had her freedom back.
Mason Miller has always stayed as far away from commitment as he could after having his mom walkout on him and his father when he was three years old. He has never let another woman get close to him, wanting to be in control of his relationships and not get hurt.
When Mason moves to Phoenix to open up a restaurant with Bailey’s brother, Harry, the two find their long-standing hatred for one another turning into an attraction. Yet with no-strings comes with lots of complications and can the two handle everything that comes with it?
I really struggled at the beginning of this book to get into it. I found the writing was a little weak and the characters just had too much information with them and everything felt forced. I discovered it was the author’s first book which made sense but a few times at the beginning I really wanted to put the book down.
I liked Bailey and she put herself first after Tyler and then adjusted her life once again with Luca. She had amazing parents that allowed her to be a flight attendant to ease the pressure in her life. She had a great friend group that were all flight attendants as well but she did seem to have a lot of freedom to go out which surprised me as a single parent myself.
Mason was a player and I did understand why he was so scared to get attached yet his dad got remarried and he had an incredible step-mother and they really showed him a stable life. It was pretty obvious that Mason just used it as an excuse.
There was a long-standing hatred between the two for so many years but also so much attraction between the two of them. Even when they decided to act on their attraction, they both still talked about how much they hated the other one and decided to keep everything that happened between them a secret.
The book goes along how you think it will with a change in how both of them feel and a few typical hiccups along the way.
The book was all right and got better as you went along but it was nothing out of the ordinary.

"A Light Behind The Lies" by MJ Huxley is a compelling contemporary romance that delves into the complexities of trust, love, and unexpected connections. The story revolves around Mason, who has trust issues stemming from his mother's departure during his childhood, and Bailey, a woman seeking freedom after a tumultuous relationship.
Mason's emotional detachment from women changes when he finds himself drawn to Bailey, his best friend's sister. Despite his history of casual relationships, Bailey becomes an exception, adding a layer of complexity to the narrative. The characters are well-developed, each grappling with their own past and striving for personal growth.
Bailey's decision to become a flight attendant reflects her desire for independence and control over her life. The author skillfully weaves the consequences of her past relationship into the storyline, adding depth and emotional resonance. As Mason and Bailey's paths intersect, the story explores the impact of unexpected connections on their lives.
The narrative is engaging, with a mix of romance, self-discovery, and familial dynamics. MJ Huxley captures the nuances of the characters' emotions, allowing readers to empathize with their struggles and triumphs. The tension between Mason's past trust issues and his growing feelings for Bailey adds a layer of anticipation and suspense to the plot.
The pacing is well-managed, and the writing style is clear and evocative. The author navigates the themes of love and trust with sensitivity, creating a story that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. The dynamics of relationships, both romantic and familial, are explored with authenticity, making the characters relatable and the story emotionally resonant.
In conclusion, "A Light Behind The Lies" is a captivating romance novel that goes beyond surface-level connections, delving into the intricacies of trust, personal growth, and unexpected love. MJ Huxley crafts a well-rounded narrative with characters that feel real and a storyline that keeps readers invested from beginning to end.
This book was beyond what I expected to read. Being a romance reader with a lot of the popular books on tik tok and booktok, I thought it would be fun to read a not so well known author’s book (plus I had the privilege of meeting this incredible writer when I bought the book series). When I tell you this is unlike anything else I have read, I mean this.
This book is based on enemies to lovers; Bailey and Mason are sister of his best friend’s relationship since Mason and Harry were in college. Bailey thought he was a player, but he’s actually misunderstood. Mason was abandoned by his mother at a young age and had trauma that left him wanting to be alone. Bailey also had her own personal trauma of being with a drug addict and having a child with the drug addict. Both do not want a relationship, so they enter into a friends-with-benefits agreement. This agreement could end up messy since she is a flight attendant and he is opening a restaurant with her brother.
The entire time I read this book, I wanted to keep going. More often than not, I had to read for hours. Especially at the last 25% of the book because you need to know what happens next! Just the amount of thought put into the development of the characters and the relationship between them just made you want to hate the opposite in the point of view you were reading in at first to loving both characters because they realize how much they both have suffered and need to feel love. And being a single mother, I love how much development went into Mason’s relationship with Bailey’s son, Luca. You feel how right away he loves this little guy.
I cannot recommend this book enough to any reader out there. It made me smile and laugh out loud at many points. Even I started getting a little teary eyed with the feeling confessions we all know come in romance novels. 5/5 stars and will definitely be reading again in the future. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Light Behind the Lies is the first book in the Tangerine Skies Series as well as the first book I’ve ever read by M.J. Huxley, and the blurb drew me in immediately, and I’m glad to say it in fact matched my intentions as I really enjoyed this one!
Mason is described perfectly as a handsome, green-eyed, smart, and caring individual who has abandonment issues due to his mother leaving him and his father at the age of 3. Growing up, never trusting a woman led him to stray away from relationships and stick to hookups, but there seems to be one woman he hasn’t been able to shake for years now: Bailey Weaver, his best friend's sister.
Bailey, a beautiful single mother, withholds similar trust issues due to her past relationship with her son’s addicting father. These two never got along with one another and loved getting under the skin of one another, but the attraction and tension between the two were always there, and when Mason returns to town, the two can’t seem to hold out on their attraction any longer.
This was something I told you! These two individuals had been through so much dealing with their own personal issues for years, and seeing the two get over their trust issues, grow and move past their traumas with one another was everything to see. Poor Mason never thought he deserved or would receive his happy ending, but Bailey and her son Luca were that, and more. Little did they both know their happily ever after was always there standing right in front of them, as they were always meant to be with one another but it just took a while for them to realize it. I definitely recommend it!!
