Over a decade ago, Scarlett Weston escaped from a forced marriage and left everything behind. When her buried past threatens to destroy her newfound home in Hartley, Colorado, Scarlett has nowhere to turn.
Except the Last Refuge Protectors.
Trace Novo devoted his life to the Army and then the CIA… Until his superiors cast him aside. Now broken and adrift in Hartley, Trace can’t deny his attraction to his sister's best friend. Even if he refuses to pull Scarlett into the inner war he’s waging.
But getting close to Scarlett means letting her see the true darkness he’s hiding. Trace and the Protectors will do anything to save her. But only Scarlett can save him.
This is Trace and Scarlett’s story, an action-packed romantic suspense where a sunshine heroine and a grumpy hero find safety and solace in each other. It can be enjoyed as a standalone, but reading book 1 is recommended.
I write suspenseful romance with pulse-pounding danger, fun & flirty banter, and tons of heart (plus spice!). Both a Californian and a Texan in my past, I now live in the Colorado mountains with my family.
Holy smokes this book! First off, this cover is amazing! The Last Refuge Protectors add a new member to its ranks, Trace. Scarlett's past catches up to her in this exhilarating action-packed romance. We met these two in the previous book. They both had hard and dark pasts to overcome. The strength and courage that Trace and Scarlett showed were immense. My heart broke for these two, and then was stitched back together by the love and acceptance I saw in their story. I highly recommend this one for your next read!

Book info: - Romantic suspense - Grumpy-sunshine - Best friend's brother - PTSD - Polygamist Cult - Mention of child marriage - Stalking - Found family - Small town romance - No cheating, owd, 3rd act breakup - OMD (mild) - Non-virgin MCs - HFN - Bonus epilogue
Notes: - OM hit on Scarlett, but she's not interested in him, and this made Trace jealous and act possessive towards her. - There's no breakup, but Trace did leave for a month to sort out the issue he left at his previous job. He also made an effort to seek therapy while he was gone. He continued his sessions even after coming back to their small town. - Glad to read for once that the FMC has an active sex life, and that she has been around.
Trace came to Hartley County eight months ago because his half-sister asked for his help. He was more than glad to come to her rescue because his life has been drifting away and he felt lost after a tragic mission that happened two years ago. This is when he met Scarlett, his sister's best friend; whereas Trace was all grumpy and gloomy, Scarlett is the sunshine wherever she goes.
They felt an attraction for one another, but Trace didn't act on it, thinking he wasn't good for her because of the things and horrors he went through. He stayed away as much as possible, but he's always around in the shadows, making sure Scarlett was safe.
Then one day, an anonymous account commented on Scarlett's IG post, saying she should be punished after running away for the last 13 years. Scarlett was born into a polygamist cult, and she was arranged to marry an elder when she was just 15 years old. She didn't want this, so she and her friend, Kenny, planned to run away. She escaped successfully, but Kenny didn't. Since then, she has been living in the town of Hartley.
Since Trace was all about protecting Scarlett, he could always tell if something was up with her. When she told him about her past and the comment she got, Trace made it his mission to be her bodyguard. He didn't leave her side and was hell-bent on providing security and assistance 24/7. And all the reasons he had for staying away were thrown out the window because there's nothing more important to him than staying close to her.
This was honestly good, and the suspense kept me in my seat. Aside from getting harassed in the comment section, someone was also stalking Scarlet. I was honestly surprised to find out about the stalker, and it was a good plot twist that I didn't see coming—a totally cool revelation, btw. Though I honestly felt more sad for the stalker than mad at him, I think he was just lost and felt abandoned. But, of course, his actions cannot go unpunished. I'm glad Scarlett showed him some mercy.
As for the romance, it was a gradual development. Though they've known one another for the last eight months, nothing really happened between them until this stalker situation. Also, the hot and cold treatment of Trace to Scar was exhausting. He sure did have a lot of issues, yet he couldn't stay away from her. One minute, he would show her how much he wanted her, only to act like it was a mistake the next. Then Scarlett would always try to entice him, and she would get mad and hurt when he walked away. She knew he has some demons, but she still wants to be with him, at least in a physical sense only.
It was actually refreshing to see an FMC who's adamant about having a no-strings setup. Scarlett doesn't believe in love and forever, mainly because of her upbringing. But she does enjoy smex a lot, and she could separate emotions from the act. When she approached Trace, this was all she wanted from him. Trace has feelings for her but won't go down that road because he thinks she deserves someone even better. It was really satisfying reading that the MMC falls first and hard for the FMC. He also dropped the love bomb first, and Scarlett only comes around with her feelings for around 90%+ of the story.
I also liked the instant family that they created. Virtue and her brother, Toby, were lucky to have Scar and Trace in their lives. It was really sweet reading about their family moments together and how they all fit together like a puzzle.
Overall, this was fun. I do enjoy reading Ms. Shield's book, and I've always admired her stories, and this one didn't fail. I loved everything about it, and I'm excited to read the upcoming books in this series.

I love this cover and this story rocked! I think it’s my favorite but who am I kidding I’ve loved all of HS books. I loved Trace!!!! He was broody and protective and handsome. This was book 2 in this new series but can be read as a stand-alone. I didn’t want it to end and I really liked the plot. The writing feels like my favorite people and places and the author speaks my language. She really has the touch for romance and suspense writing. I recommend this book. Thanks booksirens!
We are back in Hartley, and in for a ride. Ms. Shield gives us the thriller I expected, along with a story I was not. We have met Scarlett and Trace in Hard Knock Hero, and I needed to know their stories. Scarlett has a past no one wants, but her tenacity and strength got her on the path to a new life. She is doing well with her sweet shop and thought she had moved on. Her past does not want to stay buried and comes calling. Knocking her off kilter and now needing to trust in Trace.
Trace is fighting his own demons; they still haunt his dreams. Protecting Scarlett becomes his new focus.
Jessi and Aiden from Hard Knock Hero are part of Scarlett and Trace’s story, and we see progress with their project started in book one. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Thank you to Booksprout and the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
This book is more a continuation of the first book in the series so I think it’s best if you read Hard Knock first. Trace Novo is the hero in this one and is step brother to the heroine of the first book and Scarlet, the best friend. Scarlet was born and raised in a cult but ran away when she was 15 as she was going to be forced to marry against her will. She ends up in Hartley Colorado where she is running a successful Sweet Shop. Trace has recently moved to Hartley. He came at the request of his sister and as he was at a crossroads in his life, decided to stay. Most of this was covered in the first book.
Scarlett gets a message on her instagram from someone from her previous life threatening her. Trace becomes her bodyguard. There is a very strong pull between them but Trace refuses to give into it. He went through something vey painful recently; he was betrayed by a superior and his partner who he is working with was killed. He’s dealing with PTSD and doesn’t think he’s in a position to offer anything other than protecting Scarlett. Things become more complicated when she hears about a teenager from the cult who is in the same situation she was in years ago. Scarlett is determined to get her out but things become much more complicated when the young girl disappears and Trace and Scarlett work together to save her.
This book has a similar vibe to the first book and I enjoyed this one very much to. I plan to keep on with the series and as with Hard Knocks, recommend this next book in the series as well.
An exciting book in which Trace and Scarlett face off against the residents of the cult from which she escaped at the age of 15 (13 years ago) when she was married off to one of the older headmen. Now she is threatened by a stranger who knows a lot about her and she hears of a young girl who, just like her, is being forced to marry, to the same older man.
Exciting and unclear until the end who the stalker is. But the young girl is found and Scarlett offers her a safe home. Trace struggles with his own demons due to work and experiences as a CIA agent and does not know whether he can be a good man for Scarlett, who in turn is afraid to commit to marriage. Together they are stronger than alone. Nice to also read characters from part 1 in this part such as Sherrif Douglas and certainly Jessi and Aiden.

Bent Winged Angel by Hannah Shield is perfectly fine, it's a quick, fun read, it wanted so badly to be a thriller but I just couldn't buy in. The concept and premise would make for a good thriller, but for me the execution was just a little under developed for me to rate it four stars.
I think it's hard to build tension and a sense of danger in first person narrative, this book is predominantly dialogue and I think the plot suffers for it. While heavy dialogue and being privy to internal thoughts helps you connect to characters and understand their motivations, the lack of scene setting and big picture narration fizzles out a lot of the tension. For me at least, plenty of people have loved this book, as evidenced by previous reviews. There's really no sense of place or time, and things just sort of fall into place both for the characters and for the mission. I just didn't feel like there were any stakes here, there weren't any challenges that the characters couldn't work out within a page or two.
As far as the romantic through line is concerned, it was pretty good. I do enjoy a protective, broody mmc; and Trace is a great one but I found his constant self loathing and pushing and pulling away from Scarlett, the fmc, a drag. Scarlett is a big girl and she can make her own choices, I think if Trace had let her do that the first half of the book I'd have liked it even more. Their chemistry gets really good, and the way they take care of each other is very sweet. Both characters go through quite a bit of development as they come together throughout the book and you really can't help rooting for their happy ending.
The found family theme of this series is also really good; I think Hannah writes really authentic platonic relationships and connects her characters very genuinely. While this is a stand alone, it is the second in the Last Refuge series, and makes references to events from book one. I do think I'll go back and read it, I liked Aiden and Jessi a lot and would like to know their origin story. This book ends setting up for the next book, I was disappointed that it wasn't going to be River's story, but I'll be here when Hannah gets around to him.
Thanks to Book Sirens, I received an electronic copy of this as an ARC for free and have voluntarily given my honest opinion of it.
Another great addition to this series!! I really liked both Scarlett and Trace and was waiting to read their story after they were teased in Hard Knock Hero. I thought it was a very interesting and unique storyline and it was not the storyline I thought Scarlett and Trace would’ve had, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and was glad that it took me by surprise! Scarlett and Trace compliment one another and you can tell that they have a strong connection and care for one another and their family very strongly. I’m looking forward to reading about Owen’s story next!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5 stars. The plot was good, but the MCs were unrelatable. The FMC, Scarlett, grew up in a cult and ran away from an arranged marriage. As an adult, she moved to a small town not far from where she was from and changed her name. I don't understand why she’s supposed to be in hiding and has an Instagram account!
The MMC, Trace, was dealing with heavy trauma. He kept pushing Scarlett and his close friends away because he felt he was too damaged. It was cliche, but there were some good action parts.
This book features Trace and Scarlet. The H/h interaction was not my favorite. Trace has SO many issues it detracted from the story. I don't have a problem with a broken hero but …. this got old fast. I never connected with this story but the writing was such that I stayed with the story. I will read the next book in the Last Refuge series because I enjoy Hannah Shield as a writer and one miss for me doesn't change that.
## This was just not for me. I don't like the cult angle. At all. The cult, the cult, the cult. Ugh, no. In addition, I didn't really care for the hero. His hot & cold act was frustrating. The heroine practically bullied the hero into having sex with her. It took me a week to finish when I usually read a book in a day or two. Sorry, can't recommend.
This book was frustrating and it was difficult for me to get into. Both main characters are dealing with trauma; MFC from growing up in a cult, and MMC from his secret time in the government. What I didn’t like:
1. MFC was very inconsiderate and tried to bully her way into the MMC’s life and basically guilt him into sharing his trauma with her. She was very pushy and insensitive (which is a huge departure from the first book). From the beginning, we see that the MMC is still dealing with his trauma. Early on, we learn about MFC’s childhood and within the first few chapters, she states that she’s healed from her trauma. You would think since she went through stuff, she’d be more sensitive to others who are experiencing the same thing, in book1, I loved how Aiden was very patient and supportive with Jessi. Here, the genders are flipped and idk what happened in this second book regarding support, patience, and care for people with trauma.
2. MFC comes off as childish, irrational, and pretty naive and dumb tbh. For example, she grew up in a cult where they force underage marriage. They also murdered her friend for trying to help her escape. Yet when she ran, she hid in a town only 20 miles away. She’s in hiding yet has social media and POSTS pictures of Jessi’s diner which shares her location 🤦🏻♀️.
3. She got mad at the MMC for installing a camera in Jessi’s diner which has full view of the street, because according to her, he’s infringing on Hartley people’s privacy and freedom???? Huh??? It’s aimed at a public street. His sister owned the diner/property which the camera’s installed on…
4. She wants to go back to the compound to talk to people about Virtue, a young girl whom an anonymous account said ran away and is asking for help to find her. What makes you think this isn’t a ploy to bring you back and hold you against your will? They’ve committed MURDER. You really think they won’t kidnap? You’re really going to risk that knowing they already know your location, harassing you, and sending threats? Pretty dumb.
5. I would expect the MFC behavior and thoughts from a teenager who is still immature, not an almost 30 year old woman.
I’m really trying to finish the book but I’m considering DNF. I really loved Starcrossed Colorado which is why I started reading Last Refuge Protectors. Book 1 was decent. Book 2 is really getting on my nerves. Maybe I’ll skip to book 3 and hope the MFC is more likeable. Ugh.

Scarlett and Trace's story, second in the Last Refuge Protectors series, is a good addition to my growing collection of Hannah Shield stories. We met both protagonists in book 1 (the heroine's brother and her BFF), and I really liked both of them even more here.
The basic premise of this series, as far as I can tell, is women in peril and the men who protect them. In general, yick, but Shield saves it by giving us strong female protagonists who do some saving of their own. In this novel, Scarlett's past catches up to her, and she and Trace grow closer as they deal with it. That said, I didn't really feel like her past was believably as horrible as we were supposed to think, at least in a romantic suspense booklandia kind of way. Yes, it was a cult, but it didn't seem particularly bad, at least as it was described. To really feel empathy for her, I needed it to be a little more black and white.
With the previous novel, one of my complaints was that I didn't understand why Jessi was so loyal to Hartley since the town hadn't been so that great to her. With the exception of the sheriff and Scarlett, no one in Hartley seemed to support her. In this novel, I again didn't see the town's allure. Trace even notes to himself how odd it was that no one in town seemed to be involved. The found family that's growing in this series is made up primarily of transplants. Fortunately, I happen to like pretty much all of these transplants.
The suspense is a little meh, and what I suspected was mostly what happened. The best part of this story was something deeper: Trace coming to terms with his issues. I love that he struggled. (That sounds weird, and I don't mean it like it sounds.) He's perfectly imperfect, and finding Scarlett and realizing how amazing she is doesn't magically fix him. He's a work in progress and is okay with it (finally). And Scarlett is a hundred percent supportive of him. They're a terrific pair
Owen is up next. Not thrilled that he's being paired with a journalist (the intrepid journalist trope is not my jam), but I'll have faith that Shield will deliver. I'm also anxiously awaiting the last West Oaks Heroes novel, hint hint.
I received an ARC of this book for free from the author and BookSirens. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!
There is nothing that Hannah Shield writes that I won’t read. I have been anticipating this book for a long while now and am so happy to have finally be able to dive into Trace and Scarlett’s story. I think some of the best novels in any given series are those where characters have been introduced books before as the character development only gets better when their story is finally released. As far as this book goes, I think it’s very hard to not like all the characters. There hasn’t been a character that I have yet to be extremely annoyed or bothered by. That being said, I LOVE Trace. I mean, I know I say that for every character from Hannah Shield’s books, but there is just something about each character that you can’t help but love. Trace, for all the bravado he carries, is just another man looking for something to ease his pain whether he knows or doesn’t know what it is that he is looking for. Trace, much like Aiden, is a man of few words but he loves fiercely. Being thrown together in the midst of Jessi’s troubles, Trace and Scarlett found some connection that neither is able to let go – despite the denials both goes through. Both Trace and Scarlett have a past that they want to forget but it won’t go away so easily. As they grow closer, their trust in each other has seemingly become unbreakable. They care for each other and I just love the conversations and exchange between these two. It may be your typical Grumpy meets Sunshine but how they take care of each other is endearing. Because Trace is extremely mysterious and keeps to himself, every time he fiercely protects Scarlett and gives words of admission of his growing feelings for her, it just makes it all that much sweeter. How can you not be moved by a man like Trace – all alpha but only soft words to say. Ugh. I’m just glad I got Trace’s story sooner than later, but then I’m also sad that I already finished the book. I’m thinking there might be some Hannah Shield re-reading binging this Thanksgiving break. The plot is as riveting as ever and the romance suspense keeps you on your toes. I was sad to leave West Oaks but I have high hopes for the Last Refuge series as it has been oh-so-indulging. I already know I will love Owen’s story.
This is the second book in the Last Refuge Protectors Series and it picks up pretty much where Hard Knock Hero left off.
Scarlett (28) is the best friend of Jessi , from book one. Trace (early 30's) is Jessi's half brother. There is a definite attraction between the beautiful redheaded Scarlett , who runs Hartley's sweet treats shop and the reserved , quiet and watchful Trace Novo. Trace came to Hartley in book 1 to help his sister. There was an attraction between him and Scarlett from the very start but he repeatedly shuts down any spark of passion. There is quite a bit of push and pull for the first half of the book.
I thought Scarlett's back story was really interesting. She grew up in a cult and ran away at the age of 15, making a new life for herself in Hartley. Her friendship with Jessi is heartwarming - both have experienced traumas but they are resilient and are determined to help others who find themselves in danger hence the Last Refuge came about.
Trace is a dark horse but as his secrets are slowly revealed it is clear that he too has been through some awful ordeals and there is a really sinister subplot that develops in the arc of the books. When Scarlett's life is in danger , Trace does all he can to protect the woman who is stealing his heart.
I really enjoyed this book - it is a romantic suspense and I am so invested.
I am going straight on to read book three , Home Town Knight , which is Sheriff Owen Douglas' book. You could read Bent Winged Angel as a standalone but I would recommend reading Hard Knock Hero first.
Available on Kindle Unlimited. The ebook has 314 pages. I read the book and listened to the audiobook which has good narration by Finnley Cole and Isabelle Turner with a listening time of 9 hours and 34 mins.
HEA? More HFN but there is more to come as the series continues. Cheating? No
Trace is the strong, silent hero of this story. He prefers to stay at a distance from others, even his sister and her new fiancé. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t know everything that is going on around him. Much of Trace’s past is hidden, classified and may never come to light. As a highly trained CIA agent, he is able to hide in plain sight, watch, observe, find out what he needs to know and use his skills to protect himself and others. Since he met Scarlet when he first came to town to help his sister, Trace has been interested in knowing more about her. He has been watching her from the shadows, making sure she is safe from the troubles that seem to plague the town. His PTSD makes keeping his distance from others a priority, at least in his mind.
The moment he realizes that Scarlett has a stalker, Trace is in protector mode, a fact that both angers and thrills Scarlet. She is very attracted to the big, handsome loner with shadows of pain in his eyes. Scarlet instinctively knows Trace is dangerous, but she also knows he would never hurt her and has the skills to keep her safe. She is not happy about his hot and cold attitude toward her, the possessive way he watches her or his knack for avoiding her. At first, Scarlet is not happy that he has been watching over her from the shadows, but an intruder and threats concerning her past have her calling him for help. Trace insists on beefed up security and staying in her house until the security measures have been installed. No matter what Scarlet thinks, he is finding it difficult to keep his hands off of her, but he knows once he does touch her, he will want to claim her as his own. Both are carrying painful emotional scars from the past, and Trace vows to protect Scarlet from the past reclaiming her. They have to deal with those who are taunting and hunting her, two innocents who need their help and his PTSD that threatens to consume him. Their story is tumultuous, steamy, action-packed and suspenseful. Neither is looking for love, not even sure they are worthy of it, but it finds them anyway.

"Bent Winged Angel" by Hannah Shield is a captivating blend of romance and suspense that delves into the complexities of a scarred past and the healing power of love.
Scarlett Weston is a strong and independent woman who has escaped from a forced marriage and built a new life for herself in Hartley, Colorado. Her peaceful life is disrupted when the shadows of her forced marriage resurface. Scarlett has nowhere to turn except for the Last Refuge Protectors, a group of men who are dedicated to protecting those in need.
Trace Novo, a former Army and CIA operative, finds himself drawn to Scarlett, his sister's best friend, as they navigate the darkness threatening to engulf her.
He is a broken man who is haunted by his past. However, he is drawn to Scarlett and is determined to protect her from the danger that is looming over her. The inner war Trace battles is unveiled as he grapples with his own demons, and Shield skillfully builds the tension, keeping readers engaged in the characters' journey.
The chemistry between Trace and Scarlett is undeniable, and their relationship is one of the highlights of the novel. They are both damaged individuals who find solace and healing in each other.
"Bent Winged Angel" is a fast-paced and exciting novel that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. The action sequences are well-written and suspenseful, and the romance between Trace and Scarlett is heartwarming. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense novels.
While the book can certainly be savored as a standalone, immersing yourself in the previous book of the series adds an extra layer of enjoyment. The interconnected stories allow you to delve deeper into the Last Refuge Protectors world, providing rich context and insights into the lives of the other characters.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I just love strong, resilient and emotionally mature heroines! And our heroine Scarlett is such a beautiful accompaniment to our hero Trace’s inner turmoil which makes him reclusive and emotionally reserved. This story has all the feels; it’s a suspenseful thriller, a steamy romance and heartwarming story of self healing, love and "make your own” family.
Scarlett is an incredibly open hearted person, owns her own sweet shop and believes it’s perfectly reasonable to have dessert as a meal if that’s what will make you happy. She is gorgeous, curvy, confident and has a very strong sense of self. What makes this even more amazing is that at 15 years old she escaped a forced marriage in a polygamous cult and has not only survived but has flourished in the small town of Hartley Colorado. Unfortunately, over a decade later, her past has come back to haunt her.
Trace Novo is a former CIA operative who has suffered the outcome of a mission gone tragically wrong, the heavy guilt that it’s his fault and a loss of faith in his purpose in life. He originally came to Hartley to help his sister but stayed to help supervise the development of the Last Refuge Inn & Tavern. Trace is powerfully attracted to Scarlett and her light and buoyant personality but feels that he, with all his dark issues, is not a good match and resists interacting with her. But he can’t stop himself from safeguarding her from afar. When Scarlett starts getting threatening messages and her safety is endangered, Trace feels he is the best person to step in and protect her.
Overall, a very exciting and satisfying read and I anxiously await the next story in the series.

Trace is a perfect hero. Scarlett is everything he needs.
Bent Winged Angel had me enthralled from the beginning. What a great romantic suspense/ thriller! I was looking forward to Trace and Scarlett’s story after reading Hard Knock Hero (book one in the Last Refuge Protectors series) and I got so much more than I expected. Trace is tortured by his past and Scarlett, while she has moved beyond hers is still haunted by it. However, when that past comes to Hartley looking for her, Trace is the one she trusts to protect her. I loved that Trace was so loyal and steadfast even though he was struggling to overcome his history. He doesn’t want to hurt Scarlett and is so protective of her and those she loves. He’s willing to put himself in danger to help Scarlett save others. I thought Scarlett was strength personified and loved the way she was not afraid to speak out for herself and fought for her future. The story was intriguing, thrilling, and action-packed, and I couldn’t put it down.
Hannah Shield has created strong and capable women who leap off the page. Her Heroes are perfectly imperfect, strong, trustworthy, and tormented; they grab hold of my heart and don’t let go. I’m also completely captivated by the folks of Hartley. We get to see Jessi and Aiden from the first book, how the Refuge they are building is coming along, and how the Protectors group is developing. All-in-all a wonderful and exciting read. The people, the story, the town, the refuge, and even the cover all combine for a perfect book. I can’t wait for Owen’s story next. This is a fabulous series. I received an arc from Book Sirens, and this is my honest review.
I found this story unique and very interesting. I haven't read a story with a cult theme, but it isn't all about that. You have a wounded in body and soul hero who was let go from the military. When I say he was troubled, he really was. I found how he acted to be true, some reviewers have not. Just know, he runs hot and cold because he has so much he hasn't dealt with.
The h is the one who was in the cult, not by her choice - she was 15 when she finally was able to leave. I had more problems with the h then I did with the H. Granted she didn't have a choice while in the cult, but she's been out for 13 years and I didn't like the games she played at times.
Great secondary character's too, that will keep you wanting to read the whole series. I did read book 1, this is a standalone, but think you'd enjoy starting from the beginning.
Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level 5 out of 5 and described many times - bedroom door wide opened. Many crude words used. I did want to know how she could afford a candy shop and where she got her training. Her adopted parents left her their house, so that was cleared up.
Many villains to choose from and I knew 100% I chose correctly - NOPE - big big curve balls that I liked the twist.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic, suspenseful, violence, intrigue, and plenty of steam. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. I recommend this series and author. There is an extended epilogue that you'll have to download separately - free. It's worth it! (ljb)
This is the second book in the new series about fierce protectors and strong heroines.
We met both MC's in the first book where Scarlett is Jessi's best friend and Trace is Jessi's brother.
Scarlett escaped a cult at age 15 when she was forced to marry a man she despised. She built a new life for herself in Hartley, where she started a candy shop and found new friends. Here she also meets Trace, Jessi's brother, a man with a dark past and demons that haunt him through nightmares. Both are drawn to each other but Trace feels he isn't worthy of love and keeps her at arms length.
When Scarlett is threatened via her Instagram and gets a stalker on top, Trace steps in to protect her. He vows to do everything in his power to keep her safe and find out who is behind the messages. When op top of that, Scarlett receives a message from someone from her old life about a girl having to marry to the same man as her, they set out to try and save the girl.
This was a great second instalment in a series that I'm quickly becoming addicted to. There's suspense, intrigue and complicated feelings that lead to love. Both MC's have issues to work through but are there for one another.
We also get so see previous characters again and new ones are being introduced. I believe Owen's book is next and I'm curious to find out what his story is.

❤️❤️This is the 2nd book in the Last Refuge Protectors series❤️❤️
Trace (Jessi's brother from Hard knock Hero) was kind a big mistery from the point he entered in Hartley. Former CIA agent with many secrets and demons tries to survive, while helping his sister to achieve her dream-build a place where the most wulnerable can find help. He tries to fights with himself to stay away from a pretty redhead creating the best sweets in the area-Scarlett, because he doesn't believe he is wotrh to be loved and have more with her.
Scarlett lives her life in Hartley and tries not to remember about her life 13 years ago. But her demons from her past are back and she has to deal with them and she will need help from Trace, who acts very confussing- one time he cares and want her to be safe and other times he is cold and keeps distance.
As situation escalate, both have to fight their own insecurities and fears, have to learn how to trust and accep help, while helping two kids.
We got another great story, it was captivating from the beginning till the end, great mix of suspence, romance and crime. We meet characters from first book and I have to say I really like Owen, because as a member of police he has to follow rules but sametime he's in his own way fan of Aiden's and Trace's actions 😁.

Scarlett is attracted to her best friends brothers when they meet, but the attraction doesn’t seem to be mutual. Turns out Trace is attracted to Scarlett but his life is a bit of a mess, so he keeps his distance. Scarlett had a very unusual childhood and it comes back to haunt her when she starts to receive nasty messages. Trace is fiercely protective and when he sees her distress he vows to do everything he can to protect her. The more time they spend together, the harder it is to deny their connection. Scarlett’s past has colored her thinking about relationships and Trace’s former work has left him scarred inside and out, so things between them start very slowly. They end up working with the other Protectors to help someone who is suffering the same fate she did. I loved how strong, caring and determined Scarlett was, even if she was a bit closed off at first. Trace believed in doing the right thing, no matter what, was loyal and finally ready to ask for the help he needed. I loved their connection and how they made each other feel and I loved the suspense aspect of the story and can’t wait for more from the protectors. I would definitely recommend reading the first book in the series to get the most out of this story.
Hannah Shield writes stories that grab your attention with intrigue and mystery, while giving you a complex and exciting romance to enjoy. The Last Refuge series is a slight change from her West Oak Héroes and Bennett Security series as these new stories tie the current situation with situations from the characters’ pasts.
Both Scarlett and Trace have experienced tragic circumstances that have deeply affected them. In Bent Winged Angel Scarlett needs a Protector and Trace steps forward in this role. He’s been attracted to Scarlett and slowly developed feelings for her from a safe distance. His nightmares and past actions make him feel he isn’t what Scarlett deserves, but threats to her safety quickly changes his attitude.
Scarlett has worked hard to leave her past behind for 13 years, but a stalker has her worried for herself and for teenagers at Paradise Ranch. Their circumstances are all to familiar to Scarlett and she thankful for Trace’s support and protection, but she’s frustrated with his on/off interest in her.
This is a satisfying storyline with so much uncovered and some new additions to town that bring skills and support to the Protector cause. Definitely read book 1 in the series to best understand the dynamics that brought the main characters together.

This book almost felt like a part two of the introduction to this series. This introduced more new characters as well as solidified the Last Refuge Protectors. It was a great romantic suspense with some big secrets and intense moments.
Scarlett escaped a cult when she was a teen and was about to be forced into a polygamous marriage. After fifteen years her past is finally catching up with her. But her best friend’s brother, Trace, isn’t going to let anything happen to her. Trace has his own demons and secrets, but in his search for a clean slate, he never thought he’d be good enough for a woman like Scarlett.
As Trace tries to protect Scarlett, Scarlett finds that there are more people for them to save. They embark on a mission to save a girl from a similar fate and end up closer than ever.
Trace and Scarlett finally agree to have a “for however long it lasts” fling because neither thinks they can give forever. But as they spend more time together they develop feelings and find much more than they expected.
This was a good book filled with adventure, romance and emotion. It was pretty low angst, but did have some back and forth in the beginning. Trace and Scarlett created their own little family and I loved the way they supported each other.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a complimentary copy. Scarlett Weston escaped her abusive life at fifteen and found a new home in Hartley, Colorado. Ten years later she owns a Sweat Shops and is loved by the town. She meets Trace Novo when he came to town to help his sister Jessi, Scarlett's best friend.
Trace has his own issues, ex operative with some PTSD. Trace and Scarlett sort of start as friends but Trace holds himself back which upsets Scarlett. Scarlett wants more with Trace.
Scarlett is receiving threats on Instagram and someone seems to be stalking her outside of her house. Scarlett tells Trace and he barges his way into fixing her issue. Trace and Scarlett grow closer as they spend time together not only to figure out who is after her but to help Jessi with the Last Refuge.
Will Trace and Scarlett figure out who is behind the threats? As they uncover more about the threats they learn there are some people that Scarlett left behind that need her help. Will Trace and Scarlett be able to help those that need them the most?
Cannot wait for River's story.

Romance with lots of action and heart. At its heart this is a love story, a hard fought one as Trace & Scarlett find their way into each other's hearts. But that is only one part to the story, Ms Shield has written a story that has so much more going on with action that will drag you into the story and keep you hooked through to its conclusion. Trace is a complicated character, his life before his arrival in Hartley has left scars and issues he is struggling to overcome, and while attracted to Scarlett, believes he has nothing to offer and she can do better, however, protecting her, that he can and will do. Scarlett's background growing up in a polygamous cult, which she ran away from rather than living married off as a teenager, has come back to haunt her as the elder she was promised to discovers her new identity all these years later and embarks on a terrifying mission to get her back. The story builds on the events from the first in the series, Hard Knock Hero, with the Last Refuge Protectors and continues their actions taking on the cult, saving Scarlett from her stalker, and two teenagers who become Scarlett & Trace's family and adding new characters to the mix. With twists and turns you won't see coming, this entertained from start to dramatic finish.
𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: small town, grumpy x sunshine, ex military, thriller, alpha hero, found family, forced proximity
𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀: abuse, violence, death
I really liked this book, and I was very happy to finally find out about Scarlett's past and why Trace is so distant and grumpy. Their story is so beautifully written and I hope from the bottom of my heart that you will give them a chance.
Scarlett is such a loving person and although she wants to live a quiet and happy life, her past does not leave her alone, making its appearance again after many years. The past hits her hard, and the only person she can trust and protect her is Trace.
Trace struggles with his demons that still haunt his dreams. His life takes on a different meaning when his new focus changes to helping Scarlett. I really liked how Scarlett turned Trace into a better man and made him see the world with different eyes.
Their relationship is full of ups and downs, but they always find themselves together.
The author gave the book a hint of a thriller, which is really an interesting aspect and keeps you in suspense.
Thank you Hannah Shield for the opportunity to read this amazing book in exchange for an honest review.
Trace came to Harvey to help his sister who’s in of his help - but he’s also running away from his dark past and thoughts. While everything went down with Jessi(his sister) he meets Scarlett a beautiful women who seemed as determined to as he was to keep Jessi safe and they seemed to have connected while it all transpired. But after everyone was safe and things went back to normal he distance himself from her and all for a good reason according to him. Scarlett’s ran away from her cult, she wanted ti be free and be herself. And at 15 years old she was to be married, she wouldn’t let that happened. Her past comes back to haunt her but she has no clue as to who or how they know how she ended up in Hartley. Trace notices her worry and steps right in to act as her guardian. But he seems to be conflicted he wants her but pushes her farther away after every encounter. They both know they can’t give each other love but know they have chemistry and they feel safe and well while they are around each other. So they give each other a try. But trace seems to think he’s not enough of her and Scarlett does not believe in fairy tales. Will they be able to realize the beautiful relationship they can form if they’d only give each other a chance. 🤍
