Money Meltdown

Rate this book
In this analysis, Shelton calls for a unified international monetary regime—a new Bretton Woods—to lay the foundation for worldwide stability and prosperity in the post-Cold War era.Despite worldwide rhetoric about free trade and the global economy, the leading economic powers have done little to address the most insidious form of protectionism—the inherently unstable international monetary system. In outlining steps toward a new world monetary structure, Judy Shelton elevates the needs of individual producers—who actually create wealth in the global economy—over the programmes of governments.

Judy Shelton provides a well-written history and analysis of how the Bretton Woods agreement, which was championed by John Maynard Keynes and Harry Dexter White during the latter stages of World War II, eventually devolved into nations cutting their monies' ties to gold. She then makes a compelling case for nations to reconnect their respective currencies to gold so that international trade can flourish.

While this book was written in 1994, readers in economic history would benefit from her detailed and knowledgeable description of monetary diplomacy from the 1940s the the 1990s. Shelton's arguments for returning to gold as money is supported by her nuanced understanding of economic theory.

This was a clear tutorial on the history of our currency since WWII and the decision by the US, Britain and France to base their currency on gold. The political and trade decisions ever since are outlined with simple clarity for the reader to understand monetary policy. Since Judy Shelton published this book 30 years after the initial decision it left this reader seriously pondering his selections in the next election. Even more, she has left me thirsting for her new book to be released later this year.

Gold!

This somewhat dated book reminds us of the dire impact of inflation on the lives of regular Americans. And it spares no blame for the causes of this misery.
