The Grail Cycle #2

A Song of Magic

Rate this book
Three sets of hands upon the stone, one set of hands to pass alone.

Still reeling from learning what she is, and still not in control of her magic, Jenyfer sails with Katarin Le Fey and the women of The Night Queen, determined to stay away from Ordes and the danger she poses to him and the crew of The Excalibur. Arthur travels to the country of his mother to learn to harness his magic and prepare himself to fulfil a destiny he isn’t sure he wants, or deserves, as Ordes attempts to forge a way forward without Jenyfer.

While searching for his warrior’s heart and trying to decipher the Fisher Queen’s messages, Arthur finds the family he craves. Doing their best to avoid one another and their roles in Merlin’s prophecies, Ordes and Jenyfer’s paths continue to cross, leading them from Avalon to the watery realm of the Master of Songs and Death, and the musical heart of syhren magic. As Jenyfer begins to uncover her power, she and Ordes learn that sometimes, it can be hard to distinguish the truth from the lies.

Recovering from her time beneath the waves, Lamorna struggles to reclaim her place in Kernou. As the Chif’s influence spreads, and Kernou becomes more dangerous than ever, Lamorna and her aunt decide to flee. Drawn into the fierce land of Cruithea, Lamorna discovers a place of magic and savage beauty, where she forms an alliance that could shape the future of Teyath and put everything in jeopardy.

From the wilds of Cruithea, to the magical island of Avalon and the mysterious realm of Lyonesse, Jenyfer, Ordes and Arthur are drawn deeper into the world of gods and prophecies, and learn that not everything is as it seems.

A Song of Magic is the second book in The Grail Cycle, an epic romantic fantasy reimagining of the Arthurian legends.

Kate Schumacher writes epic fantasy with romance subplots, complex politics and vast, sprawling worlds filled with myth and magic and faeries. These are worlds you can get lost in, worlds where you will find fierce female characters who don't need saving, and men who support them. You will find flawed, reluctant heroes, Celtic myth, power-hungry villains, complicated alliances and a cast of relatable characters.

Kate's writing is influenced by history, sociology, philosophy and mythology, and by politics. She writes multiple point of view stories with individual plot lines that interweave at different points throughout the narrative. Kate never intends this either - her characters are just bossy and rude and all have things to say.

I received an arc for an honest review and I’m so thankful.
This book was just as incredible as the first.
I love every single character & my fav is probably Lamorna.
I just know her character growth is going to be insane. 🙌
The shocks were so good I didn’t see a lot coming.
Ordes is now one of my book boyfriends haha he’s in my top 5. I highly recommend checking this series out. I am so desperate for the third.

Whenever I read a book Kate has written, I find myself at a loss for words to try and convey just how perfect her books are. Still, I will do my best to share how I felt reading A Song of Magic.

A Song of Magic is the second book in The Grail Cycle series and it is just as good, if not better than book 1, The Call of the Sea. We follow several characters in this series, and I love how Kate makes us connect to each of them. Ever since her first series, The Fires of Aileryan, I fell in love with the way she writes and delivers multiple POVs. It truly is a gift, providing us with a much broader perspective and giving time and space for different characters to share different aspects of the story. We truly understand why something happens the way it does, why somebody acts in a certain way, and how they truly feel and what is important to them.

A Song of Magic still follows the same characters from book one, like Jen, Ordes, Arthur, Kat, but we are introduced to new POVs as well. Lamorna gets her voice, and as much as I find some of her actions and thoughts wrong, I can understand why she acts the way she does. How utterly broken she is from years of oppression. I can only hope she will find her redemption in the next books.
We are introduced to Melodias, another intriguing character, and I feel we will be seeing more of him as the story progresses.

The Grail Cycle is an Arthurian retelling, but it is so much more than that. It is a retelling like no other, interwoven with gods, prophecies, myths and mythical creatures, religious oppression, female rage, and unexpected revelations. It is a true fantasy story, a story for the ages. It is a story of self-acceptance, of searching and finding your self-worth, of finding a family of people, non necessarily connected by blood, but by true and honest feelings. It is a story about love, about soulmates, about love between brothers and sisters, friends and family, a story about love for people and humanity. It is a story about reshaping (or trying to reshape) a world that descended into chaos of thirst for power, greed, and hunger for more. We are no there yet, but I hope we will see, in the next books, just how good that world could be if guided by pure intentions. Everything does depend on a prophecy, but I feel in the end it will depend on the people who truly want the change, not because of some prophecy, but because they believe it is right.

I love this series so much, and I honestly don't know how to part with the story and its characters. The Grail Cycle is one of those series that will always be in the back of my mind, and I know I will come back to it, to reread it over and over, while waiting for the story to continue and to see what will happen next. The series deserves so much more, and I hope you will give it a try.

I got so much more from this series than I ever imagined I would. I came for a simple pirate romance, but I stayed for the five star story-telling, unique perspectives, characters that make you really feel, an agonisingly slow burn fated loves, and yes, yes okay, Ordes himself 🖤🏴‍☠️😅

I was obsessed by the end of book one, by the end of book two I'm pretty much ruined for other fantasy books! What an incredible series to start my 2025 reading journey! Seriously! Wham, bam and thank you ma'am (because Ordes is a gentleman haha).

It's mature, it's complex, it's got slow and smooth, organic character development and an exquisitely presented multi-POV which grants readers an unbias (as much as you can be) view of the world and its various "shades of grey".

It manages to be a romantasy book without the romance taking away from the fantasy. There are no moon-eyed, lovesick fools who think of nothing else than each other naked here... though don't worry, there's still plenty of that too when it matters (and tastefully, 🌶🌶 😉).

Good characters in general are so important to me. I'm the sort of person who reads for "people first, plot second". I need believable characters and this book presents people who are messy, moody, complicated, imperfect and totally endearing in their own individual ways, what's more believable than that?! These are people who are equal parts protagonist and antagonists in their own and each other's lives. People who are "found family", who self-admittedely understand very little about each other or themselves but who try really, really hard. There is love and patience. Miscommunication and second chances. Heartwrenching romance and wanting. Independence and identity. For a book set in a high fantasy "romantasy" world, I was surprised by just how much raw humanity it captures.

As I mentioned, plot is generally secondary to me, but I do really value how a story is told. Like book one, it's paced gently but consistently, allowing the reader to go on the journey together with the characters without an overwhelm of information which is important with a book like this that is based in Arthurian legend and lore. The author could so easily have force-fed us for convenience sake, but I never felt that was the case. Instead, the reader is allowed to learn about the world, the people and the motivations organically through both actions and interactions enhanced by a highly considered use of multi-pov. Each character is treated as both character and device as they have their own carefully curated moments to reveal information, progress the plot or help other character's along in their journey.

Overall it is a big story to tell, with a lot of characters to invest in, but I never felt that it lost pace, tension or engagement. There really isn't a wasted page in the book with each word used artfully to draw our attention from one moment to the next.

So you want pirates? You want fae? You want "touch him/her and die"? You want an easy to follow magic system? You want slow burn romance? You want fantasy without the high school melodrama? You want Arthurian Legends? You want him to fall first? Then hey, hi, welcome, you'll want to read The Grail Cycle!!! *takes big inhale*

Book three is going to destroy me. Willingly.

A song of magic is apart of the Grail Cycle - an Arthurian retelling, it follows the lives of the characters in the first books, also introduces you to new characters! A song of magic, is very well written and has a fantastic plot with twists and turns that will make you smile. I would recommend this book to fantasy lovers that want a sea voyage and characters with incredible growth like Lamorna who finally gets her voice and becomes and incredible character seeing her growth and what will be continued is something I am excited too see!

I really liked this book! Once I started to read it I couldn’t stop! Sleep…? I never heard of it before 🤷‍♀️. Some parts I felt were a bit repetitive but I think were necessary for the story! I feel like this book is setting up for the next book in the series!

‘𝒦𝒶𝓉,’ 𝒽𝑒 𝓌𝒽𝒾𝓈𝓅𝑒𝓇𝑒𝒹. ‘𝒲𝒽𝒶𝓉?’ ‘𝒯𝒽𝒶𝓃𝓀𝓈 𝒻𝑜𝓇 𝒸𝑜𝓂𝒾𝓃𝑔.’ ‘𝐼𝒻 𝐼 𝒹𝒾𝑒, 𝐼 𝓈𝓌𝑒𝒶𝓇 𝐼 𝓌𝒾𝓁𝓁 𝒽𝒶𝓊𝓃𝓉 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒶𝓇𝓈𝑒 𝓊𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓁 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝑒𝓃𝒹 𝑜𝒻 𝓉𝒾𝓂𝑒, 𝒪𝓇𝒹𝑒𝓈,’ 𝓈𝒽𝑒 𝓅𝓇𝑜𝓂𝒾𝓈𝑒𝒹. ‘𝐼 𝒷𝑒𝓁𝒾𝑒𝓋𝑒 𝒾𝓉.’

The character development was on point! I cannot wait to see what happens in the third book! I’m totally invested in these characters, I absolutely love Ordes! 💕 There were some characters that just made me so frustrated and emotional but other characters that in my eyes could do no wrong! 😂

“‘𝐹𝓇𝑒𝑒𝒹𝑜𝓂 𝒾𝓈 𝒶 𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓅𝑒𝑜𝓅𝓁𝑒 𝒹𝑜𝓃’𝓉 𝓇𝑒𝒶𝓁𝒾𝓈𝑒 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓎 𝓃𝑒𝑒𝒹 𝓊𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓁 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓎 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝒾𝓉, 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝓉𝒽𝑒𝓃 𝓂𝑜𝓈𝓉 𝒹𝑜𝓃’𝓉 𝓀𝓃𝑜𝓌 𝓌𝒽𝒶𝓉 𝓉𝑜 𝒹𝑜 𝓌𝒾𝓉𝒽 𝒾𝓉,’ 𝒜𝑒𝓁𝓁𝑒 𝓈𝒶𝒾𝒹.”

I usually never reach out to authors while reading one of their books but I absolutely had to with Kate- the twists and turns in this book made me gasp! 😱

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I’m so excited to read the next one in the series!

Thank you so much for sending me an ARC in exchange for my full honest review! 🥰

This story really pulls you in! Despite having multiple POV, it doesn't get confusing and you always know exactly whose view is being told. The first half of the book was a little slow for me but it certainly picks up in the second half and it left me hanging wanting more!

The complexities of all the meddling gods involved makes you truly wonder exactly what is going to happen because for me I'm still unsure of everyone's motives.

I enjoyed having Lamornas POV in this book even if I still incredibly dislike her, but I'm very interested to see where her character development goes.

Kate has done it again with this book. The world she is building around Jenyfer, Ordes and Arthur is so vivid and beautiful.

There is more at stake this time as we learn about the reasons their destinies are linked but also adds even more questions to hopefully be answered because that ending!!!

Spoiler free ish thoughts

Ordes continues to be one of my favorite characters as he is so caring but also has some sassy one liners. I loved to see the growth from Jenyfer as she continues to navigate who she is and their connections. Her sister on the other hand…ugh I have compassion for Lamorna but she sure knows how to make a mess of things. Arthur has come a long way from Book 1 but I’m really hoping to see his confidence shine later on in the series.

Magic, melody, and mystery combine...

This was a strong sequel for this fantasy series. You can tell I enjoyed the story because it took less than a week for me to devour it—and during a busy week, too! There were parts/aspects that were a bit repetitive and tiring (e.g. the continuous self-doubt of all three MCs), and it did feel to me like the overall plot didn't progress that much. It's hard to put my finger on.

HOWEVER. I found there was more than enough to make up for this. I really liked how we got to spend quite a bit of time with the characters, just processing what was happening to them. Poor Ordes was my favourite: he kept getting punched in the heart, but didn't stop trying his best. He needs a hug. The meddling Old Ones added an interesting and unpredictable flavour to the book, plus I'm a sucker for a good prophecy.

In summary, this one definitely hit the mark for me, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

WOWWW is an understatement!! This was my 1st ARC & I truly was excited to read it since the 1st book was incredible! One thing I loved about this was the multiple POV’s & the growth of each character from the 1st book. Beautifully written, a love story, with a lot of plot twists (which I adore)! If you are a lover of fae, pirates, Arthurian legend & magic; this is the book for you!!!

4.5*

At points it felt a little repetitive, though I understand it was done to drive home important points. Otherwise I love this series. About halfway through I realized this is going to be a 3-4 book series which kills me since it isn’t yet complete.

I know from the OG story that Mordred was a baddie but omg does he piss me off. And Lamorna? She’s Taryn 2.0 from Cruel Prince but religious (which is worse)

That last chapter???? What does it meannnnnn. I knew something was fishy throughout the book but… this seems sinister and I am scared.

This was a bit long, but there were a bit of moving pieces (characters). There were spots that could have been tightened up or not as long-winded. But this is only my opinion, and not everyone may feel that way.

I did enjoy this second book. I liked getting more information, even though it seems that it wasn't completely truthful (based on the ending chapter). This is still one of the more unique and intriguing takes on King Arthur and Company - I'm still unsure how I feel about characters changing.

Can't wait for the third book.

I need book 3 like now!

I recieved an ARC and all opinions expressed are my own .

I was over the moon to be able to read this before the release date! So thank you Kate.

Book 2 throws you right in at the deep end , where book one left off. Starting with Arthur and his journey to Cruithea.
We have to wait until chapters 2 and 3 to catch up with Jenyfer and respectively Ordes.

Oh Ordes , he's so swoon worthy and I absolutely am besotted with him!
I'm girl crushing on Jen too, even if she is infuriating at times!

There are some pretty hot spice scenes! But so well written. Not at all cringe worthy at all.

We hear alot from Lamorna and Tamora throughout this one and I feel so heavily for Lamorna throughout, with her being so brainwashed. Also finding out Kats past.

So much happened throughout this installment. Catching up with much loved characters from book 1 and being introduced to new ones.
The world building and rich descriptions made me feel like I was in the story. Character development was just incredible, so much change and growth.
I loved the multiple POVs as its good to see it from each characters perspectives.

There are alot of different pieces to this puzzle and I found myself getting a little lost at times, with the names of all the new God's, Godesses and the fact Tymis has 3 different names.

I am left with so many questions! Huge cliff hanger ending AGAIN! Give me book 3 already 😂.

I had the privilege of receiving an ARC on this wonderful book. This is a strong continue on from the first book as the plot thickens, the characters are growing, and new characters are introduced. The adventures continue for Arthur, Jen, and Ordes as the hunt begins, and more secrets are uncovered. With love, spice, betrayal, myths, and magic, what more does one require in a fantasy book? This book will have you wanting more and sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for the next chapter!

What an amazing second book in the series! I'm absolutely loving this fantasy inspired by the legends of King Arthur and enjoy finding all of the nods to these tales, whilst the story itself feels original and not like a straight retelling.

Each chapter reveals new delights as we follow on the quest with our three main characters, the tale unfurling like a flower. The prose is beautiful, and the descriptions are so incredibly lifelike I nearly felt seasick during a storm on the ship. The world building is spot on, immersing but without dragging on in creating the book's atmosphere.

The character growth for each of our main characters is progressing wonderfully. You can really feel their emotions develop and evolve as they emerge into the people they truly are. I also love forbidden love and a slow burn! This has so many of the tropes I adore.

I can't wait to see where the next books take Ordes, Jenyfer, and Arthur as they embark on their Grail quest!

Thank you Kate Schumacher for sending me an ARC of this book. This is my honest, unbiased review.

Kate Schumacher just knows how to sweep you away with her words, as it’s just so beautifully written.
Plenty of twists to keep you on your toes and pirates to get the pulse racing. 😍
Such amazing world building and character development. I was just blown away!
And that ending…hold on to your hats people! 🤯🫣😅
Book 3 can’t come fast enough.

Sirens, pirates and fae…oh my! 😉 (said that like the wizard of Oz. IYKYK)

I went into this book with quite high expectations, as I absolutely loved the first book, but was sadly a bit disappointed. The things I liked most about the first book were the writing and the setting, and I'm happy to say that these two aspects did not disappoint. As for the aspects I didn't like, I would say that some things just felt very repetitive and nothing really happened (felt like a filler book), which is fine on one hand because I absolutely adore the characters, but on the other hand I must admit that I was a little bored at times.

Still, I'll definitely read the next book, as I can't wait to see how the story continues (especially after that ending).

This story is wild! It is so intricate and well written. The characters are so complex, and the lands and seas are so wonderfully written.
A Song of Magic is the sequel to The Call of the Sea, and it continues the stories of Jenyfer, Ordes and Arthur as they discover who they are and what destiny has in store for them.
The unveiling of new information or new facets of a character we hadn't previously seen kept this story so interesting, and that ending left me wanting more immediately!
I will read anything Kate ever writes 🤩

Kate manages to weave a story so beautiful and vivid I feel as though I am on the ship, standing beside Jennyfer in the salty sea air.

The book sucks you in so deeply, that you feel as if you’re part of the story.

The mystery of the characters, who they are and who they’re destined to be had me on the edge of my seat. I devoured each page, each chapter, each POV. I needed to know more about them.

I loved the complexity and variety of each characters POV, and enjoyed the cliffhangers between POVs. I enjoyed getting to see the amazing world she had created through the eyes of multiple characters.

This is by far one of my favourite Arthurian retellings. It still managed to surprise me with all the twists and turns.

This is now one of my favourite series. I highly suggest you read it!

We have a reimagining of the Arthurian legends with pirates, syrens, magic, and faeries. I absolutely adored watching Arthur's story unfold in this one. There was adventure, loss, and growth. We got to witness a few different love stories. The romance comes secondary to the plot, which is how I like it.

Kate writes in a way that has you interested in ALL of the different POVs which is no easy feat.

Absolutely cannot wait for the next one!!!

Kate has done it again!

This was a gorgeous read! I love every minute of it.

The torment and longing that Jenyfer and Ordes go through is devastating and yet beautiful! I also adore Arthur and his storm demon! The devotion that Jalen has for Arthur is just wonderful to experience. Arthur is doubtful in himself but Jalen is a strong and unyielding presence and helps Arthur through his trauma and doubts.

Ordes faces many challenges with his identity and goes through a lot of character building and change. Jenyfer starts to understand what good people are and start to find a found family vibe.

I highly suggest this if you love
