Ivy Rhodes keeps her life busy. Star shooting guard for the national champion Westvale University basketball team, student supervisor at the on-campus animal shelter, and Pre-Vet student. She has had little time to party, date, or have a typical college experience. That’s until her senior year when she promises her sister and friends she’ll allow herself to have some fun.
Jalen Holloway is Westvale’s starting left winger, campus’ biggest playboy and has the reputation of starting a fight or two. When one of those fights lands on the athletic director’s desk, working at the on-campus animal shelter is the only way to save his senior season. He’s dreading the extra work until he meets the beautiful basketball player who will be his supervisor for the year.
As Jalen gets to know Ivy, he learns a family tragedy caused her to keep her heart guarded and trust hard to earn. So when he does something to lose it, he isn’t sure he’ll ever get it back.
This book was a DELIGHT to read! Given the fact that this is Nicole’s debut novel, I was truly impressed with her writing and her story.
All of the characters were super lovable, and truly had me laughing out loud at times. So much of what happens was just so relatable, from the roommate dynamics to “netflix and chilling”, it made it very easy to get sucked into the story. Jalen and Byron were my favorite characters with their wit, banter, and friendship. Jalen was hilarious and lovable in the way he had no idea how to do the bf/gf thing, but that he tried so hard to get it right. I LOVED that Ivy was a tall basketball queen. It is not often you read a romance book with the FMC being bigger than pocket sized, so as a fellow tall lady I appreciated that. I also loved the relationship Ivy has with her sister and family. Both Ivy and Jalen had such heartwarming families between Ivy’s sister and kids, and Jalen’s adorable parents. The way everything came together in the end was very sweet.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to a friend looking for a sweet, funny, college sports romance. The flow of the writing was a little clunky at times, but this was definitely one of the better debut novels I have read to date. I mean who doesn’t want to read about cute puppies and friendly competition dates?
3.5 ⭐️ (rounded up to 4 for a Bonnie Bonus) 2 🌶️ Lots of laughs, and lots of swoons.
My favorite out of context quote of the whole book: “You would think I was Ted Bundy with how reluctant she is to give me her phone.”
Trope - sports romance, college romance,ice-hockey player MMC, basketball player FMC, reformed playboy, golden retriever MMC, he falls first, opposite attract, anxiety rep, sweet banter, found family TW- anxiety and panic attack, suicide, death of parents
This was one cute, small, and simple read—a good book for a debuting author.
Jalen and Ivy were two competitive athletes who could never fathom a loss. A fight at a party lands Jalen at the on-campus shelter where he is under the supervision of Ivy, a shy basketball player, who he never knew existed. Their initial relationship is adorable and fun, he catches a glimpse of her and he's a goner, the first half of the book is just him trying to get her attention and it's the sweetest thing.
Even though Jalen was a playboy, I was happy to see his parents raised him well with many gentlemanly traits and love. He might seem brazen, but with time you see what's underneath the persona. Their first date was so natural and simple, it acted as a strong base for their relationship.
Ivy was a sassy FMC and her competitive side was the best thing to read. I loved how she proved herself every time someone challenged her. Jalen was such a supportive guy, I loved how he was sincere throughout the book and listened to all her fears and feelings without any questions. He was a sweet guy, with good intentions. Their relationship was sweet and steady, I loved how he respected her privacy and gave her the time she needed to open up and understand her fears without her voicing them out.
There's a reason I don't pick many college romances, they are good but sometimes it just feels too soon for such big commitments. Everything was going well, and suddenly he made the mistake of gossiping and everything went down. Watching Jalen cry has to be the worst thing, my heart pained for that guy. One moment of insecurities ruined their relationship, they just didn't end it, but gave each other the time they required to come to peace with their thoughts. It was surprising to see two people so young to feel and deal so maturely with their feelings and I was happy they communicated. They found their way back to each other, and that's all you need in the end. I loved how these two characters had strong support systems who guided them and showed how life is too short to miss such a genuine chance in love with a person who respects and understands them.
The friend group was to die for, they all reminded me of the Playing for Keeps friend group but a younger version. Jalen was Carter, Ivy was Olivia, Marcus was Emmett, Indy was Cara, Aaron was Jaxon, and Byron was Adam. This book felt like a mixture of Consider Me and Mile High and I felt I was reading the same plot in different fonts. Riley finding its home with Jalen and Ivy reminded me of Stevie and Zanders adopting Rosie. However, I doubt this would win the race over those two books, nothing beats the original.
Honestly, once I found out the shelter and the book was named after a sheltered mascot dog Riley, I was expecting more dog scenes to bond the couple, which were present but not to the extent I thought. Even though the center and the dog were the reason they were a thing, I wanted more of dog chemistry (because it was the reason I picked this book). However, they had a natural chemistry so they didn't require much push except for the obvious by Indy and Marcus in the beginning.
Ruby getting a second chance with love, was all I needed to soothe my heart. That girl deserved the world, and I can never imagine the amount of sacrifice she made for her family and sister. However, it wasn't a surprise to see who her boyfriend was, the author wasn't very subtle about the upcoming couples. Even before the idea of Byron and Lola was introduced, I knew something was going on between them when they both started keeping secrets from their best friends.
The ending was brief and beautiful. Ruby and family, along with Ivy found a happy ending.
There were many typos in the book, and even though I tried to ignore them most of the time, sometimes the sentences wouldn't make much sense until I re-read it 2-3 times and understood the typo and what the author intended to deliver.
Though the book had mostly good things, I feel it lacked in some places. Overall 3.75/5
4,25⭐️ This book is so good to be a debut. It was a cute read with a lot of good characters that i wish i could know more about them. Ivy is a shy basketball player who loves animals and is a volunter at a vet clinic. Jalen is the typical athlete, popular, charming...they run in different circles, but they finally meet at the vet clinic. It was an incredible read that i wish i could read again for the first time. I loved Ivy so much, she was an incredible character and i love her so much. Tropes: - Sports romance. - He falls first. - Opposites attract.
rep: anxiety This book was serious so cute!! I saw a reel of this on bookstagram and knew I had to give it a read and I’m so glad I did. This was an amazing story and for a debut!?!? Blown away!! The cocky, frat boy hockey player meets a shy, oversized tee/sneaker wear basketball player he’s never seen on campus before and instantly knows he needs to get to know her. Like how cute is that!! This book is dual POV, told from Ivy- a shy basketball player who has spent the past three years at college volunteering at a vet clinic, practicing with her teammates and working hard at school. And on the total opposite side of the college athlete life- Jalen, a cocky, charming and outgoing hockey player who if you don’t find on the ice, on the weekends will probably be hosting some big party. These two could not be in more separate social circles, that is until Jalen is forced into some volunteer hours at the vet clinic and meets Ivy. First off, I loved Ivy, being a tall anxious basketball player myself I feel like I was able to relate to her a lot in certain situations. I also loved to see some women’s sports represented in this book too, especially since it was basketball (my personal fav). Ivy’s childhood trauma and past did play a big role in her life at college for the past three years. Jalen on the other hand has been soaking up everything that comes with being a college athlete. He comes from a loving household, and is a future draft in the NHL. Watching these two interact and fall for each other was honestly so delightful. Ivy had her fair share of baggage and the way Jalen talked to her honestly melted my heart. Ivy became his number one priority after he met her and it was so clear in every action that he did. The man fell and he fell hard. It was honestly so refreshing to see a healthy relationship represented in a book, good communication skills, and willingness to admit when at fault. Gosh, thinking back on this book makes me swoon. I honestly went to the authors booksta page and watched so many reels of Ivy and Jalen- I just love them. They gave Nathan and Haley (if Haley played a sport vs music lol) from One Tree Hill vibes. One more thing I have to touch on is the friendships!!! Gosh I loved all these characters and their relationships so much, it was clear that they found family within each other. I can absolutely see this becoming a series! If you’re a fan of the Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy I definitely recommend checking this book out!! Overall, I seriously love this book and for a debut I am truly blown away. I am super excited to see what else Nicole Marie has coming!!
*Thank you so much Nicole Marie and team for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions above are 100% my own!*
What do you get when the cocky hockey player who has never been in a relationship meets the gorgeous shy basketball player with a traumatic past? I'll tell you what you get. You get an adorable love story where he falls head over heels in love and will do anything in his power for her to know exactly where he stands. And if you love a book like that, then you NEED to read The Riley Effect!
The Riley Effect follows Ivy and Jalen and is told in a Dual POV. Ivy is a shy basketball player who has spent most of her time at college playing ball, volunteering at a vet clinic and trying her hardest to get into Vet school. As you can imagine that doesn't leave much free time to get the full college experience. But a traumatic childhood incident also plays a major role into who she is today. Now on the complete opposite of the spectrum, you have Jalen who is the outgoing, cocky hockey player who would rather spend his weekends being playboy and partying. These two could not run in two completely different circles. But that all changes, when Jalen is required to volunteer at the vet clinic and meets Ivy.
This was the cutest book. I felt like there are so many relatable qualities that both Jalen and Ivy possess. There is some mental health representation with Ivy's panic attacks and how she works through her childhood trauma. And Jalen is relatable before for the first time, he is falling in love. And you get to see him do everything in his power to do things right. I loved how he consulted so many people to make sure he was being a good boyfriend, he was a consent king to make sure Ivy always felt comfortable and he did so many things to gain her trust. My favorite thing about Jalen, he remembered EVERYTHING that Ivy ever told him. I feel like he was that boyfriend that has a full note on his phone with all things Ivy. I mean he made a damn playlist with all of her favorites so she wouldn't feel anxious to choose a playlist while they were in the car! Talk about swoon worthy!
For Nicole Marie's debut novel, I absolutely loved it! It's an easy, quick read that will make you feel good with a happy ending. So if you ask me if I recommend this book, I say yes! Do not hesitate to give this a read and I hope you fall in love with Jalen as much as I did!
Book Tropes: - Opposites Attract - Close Proximity - Hockey Player MMC - Basketball Player FMC - College Sports Romance - Witty Banter - Mental Health Representation - Past Trauma - Lots of DOGS!

A huge thanks to Nicole Marie and her team for sending me an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion, thoughts and review!
✨A fight leads Jalen, playboy, hockey player🏒, to volunteer at the on-campus animal shelter, where Ivy, a shy basketball player 🏀, to supervise Jalen. With the initial meet cute, Jalen will do anything to hang out with Ivy and catching a glimpse under her walls, he is a goner. 🤭
Ivy stands out as a strong, relatable character whose journey of self-discovery is both inspiring and deeply moving. With her traumatic past, she learns to trust those around her. Her vulnerabilities and strengths make her feel authentic, and readers can't help but root for her. 🥹Jalen might be cocky, but he is a fluffy teddy bear. I absolutely loved him. His patience with Ivy warms my heart. He is an amazing character. Their chemistry is hot and cute at the same time.🔥
The supporting characters are equally well-developed. 💕Each brings their own unique perspectives and complexities to the story, enriching Ivy’s experience and growth. From her loyal friend who offers unwavering support to the intriguing Jalen who challenges her in unexpected ways, every character serves a purpose and contributes to the overarching themes of resilience and connection. I found this book super relatable and it made it super enjoyable to read.🙌🏽
Marie masterfully explores the dynamics between these characters, showcasing their struggles and triumphs in a way that feels real and poignant. The emotional depth and relatability of each character ensure that they linger in your mind long after you’ve finished the book. This character-driven story deserves every bit of its five-star rating!⭐️
This was cute, fluffy and charming. I felt like it did fall short in some aspects. I kept wanting a little more. I felt like this had good structure and writing! I love a couple that supports each other and somethings in this just felt a little out of left field for me.
Overall, I am super happy I read it. If you are looking for a quick, adorable love story you found it!
Recieved this beautiful book as an advanced copy. This book is bound to give any reader the warm and fuzzies. The characters are genuinely likeable and nice people, it was a refreshing change to the hockey/sports romance trope. There is spice, but not an uncomfortable amount and the storyline focuses on the MC overcoming their own pasts together as a team, finding their way in to each other's hearts.
For a debut novel, Nicole has done a superb job and I believe her writing can only get better from here. I love how she has based some of the storyline and characters off her real life college experiences, makes them so much more real- I can't wait to see what happens next for the Westvale Crew!
In full transparency, this one was rough for me. I think the premise was cute. It was more of a fluff read for me. The book follows Jalen, a popular hockey player who’s a playboy, and Ivy, a shy basketball player. Ivy had a traumatic experience in her childhood that still haunts her, and it causes her to not trust other people very easily. With that, she’s kept her head down throughout college and focused on her academics as well as basketball. Ivy’s best friend convinces her to go out and start living like a college kid, since it is their senior year, which is where she meets Jalen. I think the story had a lot of potential, but it really lacked for me. The characters didn’t have a bunch of depth. Ivy explains that she has a lot of anxiety, but I didn’t feel like it was represented very well. However, I did enjoy Jaylen and his general character arc. He goes from a womanizer to a man who really falls and falls harder. I really enjoyed that. He was there for her and anything that she needed. Jalen was so patient with her. The addition of the dog shelter was really cute. The side characters also seemed very interesting, so if they get their own books, I would consider reading. I know this is Nicole’s debut novel, so I think she really has room to grow.
Plot: 3 /5 Spice: 1.5 /5
Tropes you’ll find: sports romance (hockey and basketball), college romance, he falls first, he falls harder
Of course, I appreciate the arc for an honest review 🫶🏻
The Riley Effect is a college sports romance between Jalen, the cocky, playboy hockey captain and Ivy, the goal oriented, shy basketball captain. Jalen gets into too much trouble, so he has to spend time at the on campus animal shelter where he meets Ivy. Jalen does everything he can to hang out with Ivy, however, Ivy has a traumatic past and does not trust easily.
I loved this story so much. It was hard to believe that this is a debut novel by this author. There was so much depth to the characters, and so much development. I fell so hard for Jalen. They way he throws a party for the basketball team just so he can hang out with her. He really does everything he can to learn and be there for Ivy. The reformed playboy always gets me. When he said, "𝘐𝘷𝘺'𝘴 𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘮. 𝘐𝘵'𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨, 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴" I was a goner. His feelings never wavered.
Ivy is one of my favorite FMC. She's super relatable and I loved how determined she is. I don't blame her at all for her reactions to situations with Jalen, because I would have acted very similar. Trust is sometimes hard, and she showed that even though Jalen did everything he could to earn it, sometimes its still difficult to fully get there.
This is absolutely a must read, especially if you love dogs and witty banter! 🤍🐾
Tropes - Sports romance, past trauma, cocky hockey player MMC x shy basketball player FMC, he falls first, opposites attract
i felt so anxious and mad to the hockey formal's scene and realize that i really can't stand that kind of stupidity. hell, i hate jalen so much. and the fact that everyone told ivy that jalen's good for her bla bla bla make me feel angry because i feel like everybody's pushing ivy to forgive jalen THAT easy and it's all because he is good for her and he loves her and the way he looks at her and another blah fucking blah about what he feels about her and his action was because alcohol and some insecure thoughts about shits that he—instead talk to his girlfriend—he comes to his ex-fuck-buddy. and the way all people is trying to make good excuses for jalen is making me more mad.
i fucking can't believe jalen did that and had the audacity to do all of that when he knew what happened with ivy, what hers family situation, and her issue with herself. i feel like the word "patience" to jalen is only for discribing him having sex with ivy, not for ivy as whole person and ivy's new love life situation that surely make her overwhelming—and jalen is supposed to know that. i hate all the self blaming that jalen's did just to make him feel good (i don't know though but i feel like it). his parents raise him better than that (or so he thought in the whole book).
i was gonna give this book solid 4⭐️ but no thanks.

Debut novel for Nicole Marie and I enjoyed The Riley effect sooooo much! I always love university romances, I was served again with Ivy and Jalen who were such cuties together. It was cute, sexy and full with good vibes. You know the first true loves stories? Were the characters meet each other at university and stay until they aged? That’s this kind of story here. It just got me right in my heart. I really loved the sport female rep we can find, It’s not something you usually find in romances. So I really appreciated this aspect, here Ivy is a basketball player. And she put this sport to a high level, this is important to her. Jalen is also an athlete, he is a hockey player in Division 1 who intend to go in NHL. For the two, sport is important and they let each other know. I loved Ivy and how she was represented here. It’s not the kind of girl who are represented in books in general. So this is cool to have different type of girl rep. Now, Ivy and Jalen. Ok, they sooo cute together. I just love how Jalen put efforts to get Ivy’s attention because she was not interested in him at first. He was so into her since the first time he saw Ivy. That was funny too. He changed a lot to be the man Ivy deserve, and especially a man she can trust. And it works. I appreciated to see how step by step, Ivy opens up with Jalen. When she finally trust him, you could see how happy and relax she was. Her insecurities were preserved with Jalen, she was feeling secured with him. It was such a confort feeling to read this moments. So, If you want to read a cutie university romance, go ahead becausd you will find everything you like here!
A big thank you to Nicole and her team for providing me with an e-book ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I appreciate Nicole's decision to move away from the typical characters found in sports romance novels. Ivy, a dedicated athlete built for her sport, challenges the stereotype with her athletic build, and I admired that Jalen appreciated her height. Jalen's character, far from the affluent white boy with limited emotions that we often see in sport romance novels, showcased his struggle to carve a place in hockey as a child and how this had influenced him as an adult. Their shared understanding as athletes, seamlessly paired with the demands of their sport, kept me fully immersed in the story. Secondary characters, like Ivy's friends, felt authentic, contributing depth to their friendships.
The novel's focus on various relationships, not solely romantic ones, added a refreshing layer. Family and friendships carried equal weight in "The Riley Effect," a nuanced approach often absent in romance novels.
While the writing flow was occasionally disrupted, and certain plot elements felt predictable or repetitive, my main critique lies in the book's title, "The Riley Effect." Despite expectations, Riley the dog seemed more like a secondary character, incorporated into scenes merely to justify the title.
In summary, it's a great debut novel. I'm eager for Nicole to explore this world further, potentially turning it into a series. Westvale and its characters left a lasting impression, and I look forward to reading whatever Nicole chooses to write next.
Tropes: Student Athlete Romance | Hockey Star MMC x Basketball Star FMC | Dog Parents | Open Door Spice | Trauma | College Hockey | Dual POV
This debut by Nicole Marie is a super sweet hockey romance with a moderate amount of spice about two college athletes. Ivy Rhodes, a focused college student and basketball team captain with a guarded heart. Jalen Holloway, a bad boy hockey team captain who needs to get his act together.
After Jalen is forced into working at the campus sponsored animal shelter that Ivy volunteers at, sparks fly. But, can Jalen break down Ivy’s walls from her childhood trauma?
Overall, this was a quick and fun read! It wasn’t as heavy as I imagined it would be with the trauma aspect of Ivy’s childhood. I do wish it felt more plot heavy. I think more background, conflict, and resolution would’ve been beneficial.
One thing I really appreciate about this book is having a POC main character. The hockey romance sub-genre lacks diversity and it was nice to have that here. Not only that, but having Jalen be an inspiration for other children that look like him and hearing about his experience being a biracial hockey player was lovely and made me really fall for his character.
I enjoyed reading this debut overall and will definitely be tuning in for what I imagine will become a great series. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book a little early Nicole, I can’t wait to see you grow as an author!

Nicole did a wonderful job on Jalen & Ivy's story! Super impressed this was a debut novel and I really enjoyed it!
Ivy is a basketball player who has her sights on a school in New York. She has had a rough past and family is all she really has so she keeps herself guarded. But when the sweet talking hockey player comes her way she starts to be persuaded.
Jalen has his future planned in New York as well to play in the NHL. With both of them being intense athletes they understand that the other has a lot on the line. Jalen is patient with Ivy as she wants to just remain friends but they can't deny their chemistry. With him volunteering at the animal shelter with her..sparks are bound to fly!
This is the first book I read where both main characters are athletes and I really liked it! It brought a different perspective to the book as both characters had to face the hardships and stress of being a star athlete, which just helped their relationship grow stronger.
Ivy uses her witty banter to put her walls up but when she was finally vulnerable with Jalen, it was such a special moment. I also loved the found family trope in this! His family accepted her as their own right away! Jalen also knew family was important to Ivy so he was involved with hers whenever they were around. Teaching her little cousin how to skate? Swoon! I can't wait to read more written by Nicole!

If you are looking for a book where both MCs are athletes, this is a good place to start. Ivy is the captain of the women’s basketball team and preparing for veterinary school, volunteering at the on-campus shelter. Jalen is the captain of the hockey team and is volun-told to start helping at the shelter. When he meets Ivy, he is immediately drawn to her, but she has a traumatic past that has held her back from trusting people and entering into romantic relationships. It takes a lot for Jalen to break through the walls Ivy’s built around her heart, but he is patient enough to finally do it.
I loved that Jalen had parents who showed him what a healthy relationship looks like, and then he was able to help Ivy realize it was possible for her as well. I really enjoyed the pieces of NY and Italian culture weaved in (MSG, BEC from the local bodega, and Feast of Seven Fishes really brought me back home). And it was really nice to see a couple who was able to cheer on and support each other as competitive athletes at the top of their game.
I was excited to receive an ARC copy of this book after seeing the author hype it up for months! I loved the idea of both main characters being athletes, since it isn't something we typically see!
Ivy and Jalen's story was very much reformed playboy meets introverted, determined girl. Ivy's tragic past shaped her to her core and she really learned to appreciate family and wanted to work hard to make her dreams come true. I loved the found family that Jalen was able to provide for her, not only in friends, but also with his parents as well.
It was so fun to cheer both of them on as their senior year progressed and both experienced the so many "lasts" that felt super familiar as a previous athlete myself. I enjoyed this one and am super grateful to the author for the advanced copy!

This was a really cute and wholesome sports romance; she plays basketball and he plays hockey. I loved their dynamic and how he was such a sap for her. Ivy really was so relatable with her all work no play attitude. I myself forget that I don’t always need to be planning 10 years into the future. Jalen brings a breath of fresh air to Ivy and helps her live in the moment.
I loved reading their slow progression into helping each other, in ways that they didn’t even realize. Riley the dog that brought them together and I wish we got even more of him because I loved when the dogs were mentioned!
Very cute banter, and a little spice! Definitely recommend! Available NOW and on KU!
Ivy and Jalen. I’m OBSESSED!!! The way Jalen fell first and hard for Ivy is so adorable. I absolutely love there little banter and there competitions cause there both athletes and they don’t like to loose. I find it very sweet when Ivy shared her story about how her parents died and Jalen sat and listened and not taking PITTY on her and has been there since day one and not let her go through it alone. I also love Indy and Marcus in this book how there both rooting for Ivy and Jalen to get together and OMG the dog Mia in the house with all the hockey players and Bryon fell in love first site of Mia is adorable🥰 The breakup was sad but I understood both sides of the characters and then they got back together was so cute. I love this book and I love Ivy and Jalen. I can’t wait to read about Lola and Byron☺️
I really love Jalen and Ivy’s story because I relate to both characters. Jalen doing everything in his power to be the perfect boyfriend and Ivy putting her guard down for probably the first time in her life. Who doesn’t love when the MMC falls first and hard?
“It’s hard to believe I went three years without noticing her, and now I can’t imagine my life without her.” ♥️
I thought this book was a bit predictable at first but I was taken by surprise after learning Ivy’s backstory which is one you don’t read often. As someone who suffers from anxiety, the author handled it so well that it wasn’t triggering to read. I identify as the latter to say that we all need a Jalen in our lives to support us through it…
DNF and I almost never DNF. The characters were appallingly flat, it was very confusing for what the author was going for. I feel a though it had all the surface level components of a hockey romance, in this case a hockey x basketball, but it had no depth, it was very cookie cutter and lacked any real emotional depth or really anything past surface level issues, drama and dialog. The characters didn’t feel like real people and I just could not bring myself to continue reading despite the fact that I hate to not finish a book. I kept trying to keep reading, telling myself that maybe, just maybe the writing and characters and story would get better and it just really didn’t. This book brought nothing to the table, not just nothing new, just nothing.
The Riley Effect was a great sports romance book. It was different to me, as the FMC was a basketball While the MMC is a hockey player. The romance was perfection. It was everything I liked in a sports romance. No miscommunication whatsoever. Thank the book gods. Ivy was a great FMC, she was relatable in some aspects, like her issues with anxiety and panic attacks. Her trauma helped a lot to see how her character developed and took place. Jalen was hands down one of the best hockey book bfs I’ve seen. He fell first and he fell HARD. He is 100% a golden retriever boyfriend. I loved how much he tried for Ivy.
3.75 Stars— really, really cute for a debut novel!
I love that both characters are college athletes. It added a complexity to the story and made both of them extremely interesting. Even the side characters were sweet and funny.
Watching them both led down their walls and open themselves up to something real was a delight. The humor was also very enjoyable. I had a great time reading it, and can’t wait to see what else Nicole writes in the future.
Some of the flow was choppy, but it doesn’t detract from the storyline or how much I enjoyed her writing style.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
ARC Review: I thought this was a super cute read, especially for the Valentine’s season!🩷 It was a very lighthearted romance, and although it dealt with past trauma it isn’t a book that made me stressed at any point! I really liked Jalen and Ivy’s relationship, and I love that they worked together in a healthy way. All of the characters were super likeable and being a theater girl myself, I loved that they always watched musicals together. I only took away one star because at times it felt a little slow.
I’d recommend this book if you’re looking for a sports romance and a nice palette cleanser to put you in a good mood!✨
🥺all the feels. Nicole Marie took a steamy, sweet, & confident MMC, Jalen & a complicated (in a great way), fun & badass FMC to create a perfect concoction of a sweet and spicy couple.
I loved the sports romance piece, the MMC willing to fight for his woman & the helluva man that Jalen is. From the intro, I was hooked and at the perfect pace this story of Ivy and Jalen (and Riley) unfolded.
This is my first time reading a book by Nicole Marie and let me tell you, I’m VERY excited for this entire series! BRING THEM ON (quickly please)!
If you’re looking for a great romance book to leave you warm and fuzzy- this is it. I highly recommend!
this debut novel was such a cute read. I love female athletes in books and i feel like i never read enough of them. ivy is a absolute gem of a human, and deserves the world- and we got to read jalen fall in love with her and show her just how special she is.
jalen. Omg. so sweet. I loved how patient he was with ivy. She doesn’t trust easy, and he constantly showed up for her to earn her trust.
Where this lacked for me was a few situations just seemed random. Almost Like we were missing pieces of the book.
I’m not a certified expert in reviewing books, so don’t accept any life-changing review, I read for fun and this book was fun to read. I liked the storyline, it was an enjoyable read and the characters were lovable even the side characters and I would love to read Lola’s story or even Ruby’s story. I loved that there wasn’t any big “drama” between the main characters.
If you looking for a quick and easy read don’t look any further because you found it.
