Cryptid Enforcement Bureau #1

Catching a Water Nymph

Rate this book
I don’t like that you are staring at me—it’s suspicious. Ugh, I suppose you want to hear my story? I’m Seri North. I was your average, highly introverted, slightly nerdy, workaholic male Water Nymph. Until I made the horrible decision to go on a date with a rich, psychotic Shadow Dweller, who just so happened to be in charge of a large criminal enterprise.

That date ended in a whole ton of paranoia, trauma, and pregnancy, after almost six years of captivity. For the sake of my dwindling sanity, you won’t see most of that captivity. You get to see the fun—and not so fun—aftermath.

So, what does one do while heavily pregnant in captivity? Escape, obviously. Logically, I knew HE would come after me. If not just due to his obsession, then definitely to get his hands on my child. What I did not expect was to be accused of murder, and for the Shadow Dweller that showed up at my door to be an agent with the Cryptid Enforcement Bureau, instead of my ex-captor.

The agent, Severo Ambrose…was not what I expected. Not that I expected him at all. But he was vastly different from what I had come to understand about Shadow Dwellers.

Either way, that is about where this story starts. With poor innocent me being chased by the universal government for a crime I didn’t commit. A story of pain, trauma, healing…and love. The love, honestly, surprised even me. But Severo…as I said, was not what I expected.

3.5 rounded to 4

This book had so much potential to be an amazing story, but for me, it fell flat.
Their were parts that were done beautifully. However, other parts that to me were not handled in a way conducive to someone with that amount of trauma. I'm sorry, I'm happy the couple waited for pentrative sex yet felt it was unnecessary for them to be a happy couple.
Then, some parts felt drug out without a fitting solution. Also, I am not comfortable with how Seri & Skya genders were handled. it just felt like a smack to the face for people who identify as trans.
I'm sorry for me. This just wasn't up to oar with what u expected from this author.

cute story, really liked the cryptid part of the book. The water nymph and the ability to flow between genders. The shadow dwellers worlds sound interesting. I did feel like i was missing something, like there had been a book before this maybe that introduced this world. I don't know what it was that made me feel like that. Maybe the relationship between cyrus and killian? Seri and Severo were perfect together, love that Severo was able to let Seri heal in his own time and didn't push him. Loved nymphant. such a cute term.

I read this ages ago and forgot about it until just now.

Well this was a lot of fun! It's set 500 years in the future fyi, when humans and cryptids live together contentiously in floatable houses while cities have been reclaimed by nature.

content warning: misgendering
It's important to note that there is some misgendering in this book, much of it not out of malice, but from incomplete information. It still doesn't feel great and could be stressful.
Though water nymphs have either male or female forms and often identify as genderfluid or bigender, Seri identifies as male, which seems to be one of the major stressors of his captivity--along with some very dark off-page abuse.

Seri's captor preferred his female form and genders him incorrectly. Seri is also forced to stay in his female form while close to giving birth, muddying the issue even more. Sensitive people should proceed with caution.

You could definitely play a drinking game with how many times the author observes the architecture in great detail. In fact, if you removed everything about buildings from the book, it might be half as long. I don't really mind mostly, but at one point I counted six solid pages of this.

The writing style is very cinematic, and I don't mean that in a bad way like I usually do. Third person limited omniscient can be a risky move, because it often comes across as confusing, cheesy, or sloppy. I like knowing what the villain is doing, so I get it. I think it's mostly okay for this book, BUT the head-hopping to distant/minor characters we seem to be expected to know or care about is weird. Maybe I missed some books by this author where these characters are introduced. I still don't like it. Case in point, my notes while reading: Ok, I was having a good book and everything was fine, when suddenly the scene changed to two people we don't really know vaguely discussing topics and getting it on. I was like... did I miss 17 chapters?

We love to see a highly intelligent, resourceful, and clever person on the run. Even more so, we love a frothy, neon-colored pregnant person cleverly escaping his captors.

A baby nymph is called a nymphant? kyaaaaaaaaaa

I definitely think we should call it a survivor's statement as opposed to a victim's statement now if we aren't already.

This book has so much cozy stuff going on with it that the parts that are stressful come out of absolutely nowhere and are kind of jarring.

I think the author could definitely stand... cutting down a lot of the filler. A leaner story would just make a better book--no question. Author, if you're listening, please publish the filler as extra stories with your newsletter like other authors do. There's enough character development that you don't need to add in so much extra.

There's also some light kink in here that makes me a little uncomfy, but it's easy to skip. The age gap is a bit much--over 200 years vs 36 lol. Man, why does every kid's movie have to start with a parent dying geez.

I absolutely loved this!

This was fantastic! I’ll admit it could be a hard read sometimes; there were points where I was crying alongside Seri and Severo. Despite dealing with some pretty horrifying topics it was actually quite a light book. Yes, horrid things happened to Seri and I ached for all the trauma he’d been through, but his strength and sheer determination not to give in, not to give up and to try to be the best he could be for his daughter was beautiful. He was someone who had no reason to trust yet he was brave enough to do so with Severo. I loved that Severo (who to others could be a bit of a grump) was so light with Seri. He was this sweet, fun, adorable guy who didn’t suffer fools but also melted for anyone who he cared about. Seeing him with Seri and Skya was so sweet (I swear I ‘awwed’ waaay too much reading this lol). The world building was fantastic. Detailed but not to such an extent that it became overwhelming or clinical. The different species fascinate me and I loved the way water nymphs gender fluidity was dealt with. The idea that they were a species that had historically been predominantly fluid but also had a spectrum of fluidity from those who were fully fluid to those who were more static. Add in the idea that despite that physical ability to be fluid there were still some groups who sought to control their gender and you had a fascinatingly sad echo of some aspects of our own world. Not identical by any means, but there were echoes of some of the ridiculous rigidity that exist in society today despite historical evidence that gender has not always been a rigid construct. I’d love to see more from other species as well. The Grimms are really interesting especially with the idea that they have such a different way of looking at things that they can be seen as cold or uncaring and have to work on trying to communicate with others well so that different way of approaching things isn’t hurtful. I love when an authors puts details like that into the world they build; these little things that make it so much more real and intricate. Those little intricacies make it so much more realistic even when it’s very far away from our own reality. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I can’t wait for more from this world. I hope we get to see more of Seri, Severo and Skya but I’d also love to see some more people from this world find their HEAs. Whatever the next book brings I’ll be waiting excitedly and with grabby hands for it!

The way Shelby writes is so unique and whimsical. The way she writes not only the stories themselves, but the way she writes her characters, just completely immerses you into whichever story she's telling.

I love her series about Foxx and Harlow, however, I think Seri and Severo are my new favorites. I found this story to be truly fantastic! When I saw the length of this book I was worried that the pacing would be too slow, and that certain events would be too drawn out. That did not happen here, I didn't need to worry.

While this book is long, it needed to be. There was so much that Seri's character needed to tell, there was many different things that needed to be resolved, and the length of the book was completely necessary. For me, the pacing was excellent! I was enamored by all of the intricate details that Shelby described while describing certain locations, along with the descriptions of characters.

Once I started this book I was hooked, I didn't want to put it down, and now that I've finished it I'm really sad that it ended. Seri and Severo's relationship is definitely a slow-burn with a hint of friends to lovers mixed in. The way their dynamic developed on page was so natural and was really fitting for what all was going on. I found all of the scenes to be written very well!

I have to talk about some of my favorite scenes! First up is the back and forth that Seri and Severo went through whilst Severo was trying to capture Seri. They were well written, and they helped show more of how strong and protective Seri's character is. I also adored all of the scenes where Severo kept buying clothes for Skya, it was so cute! I also have to acknowledge that Skya's character was just so adorable! She is such a smart cookie, who cares about her 'da-da' and her 'oh-oh'. The depictions of her was so endearing, and the bond she formed with Severo was so special! All of the nicknames Severo came up with for Skya were so endearing! Nymphant was really cute, as was calling her gummy bear! I also loved that Seri called her his little dewdrop, it was all just so cute!

I loved how Shelby circled back around to the topics that were mentioned earlier on in the story, I love that she acknowledged them and explained them in better detail. That just made the whole story feel complete. Nothing felt left out, it didn't feel as though anything was missing or wasn't discussed. This was a very thought out book, with fantastic writing, incredible characters, a plotline that will get your heart racing, and adorable descriptions of a baby getting dressed up as different animals.

Overall a truly impeccable story that showcases love in it's many forms.

I immensely enjoyed this book. I loved, loved, loved Severo, Seri, and Skya! The plot was really good. There was action, adventure, romance, and trauma.

Severo was my favorite character by far. He was the biggest, bestest, kick-@ss cry baby, and I loved him for it. He owned it. Seri was a trooper and a kick-@ss in his own right, too. He just had a lot of major trauma to overcome. Skya was the best baby girl, and her and Severo were double menaces.

Cyrus and Killian were an interesting pair.

The first book series that I read by the author, The Unwilling Adventures of Harlow & Foxx, solidified me as a fan (just downloaded Book 3 that came out today), so when I read the premise of this one, I knew I was going to read it. Both series are their own entities, which is awesome, and I will continue to read them both.

Only two drawbacks. First, I wish the book would have ended with the last two sections flipped, and if you read it, you will totally understand what I mean. Either way, there is closure all around. Second, there was a lot of over-describing in some scenes that I felt was unnecessary. The book could have been a quarter shorter without those parts and still been a thoroughly enjoyable read.

My Favorite Quotes:

“Run while you can, Little Nymph and Nymphant.”

Oh, that’s an adorable word… He was officially coining the term Nymphant for baby Nymphs.

xoxoxoxo

“And so, our couple lived together with their many, many, many, many, many, many children until they were old and gray. Supported by their one overachiever child, as she was the only one who managed to get a high paying job. The end.”

xoxoxoxo

“No Dah-Dah. No Oh-Oh. Hmph!” she yelled, turning her little noggin away, as if he had insulted her.

“W-well, excuse me for not being either of those people!” Killian spluttered.

xoxoxoxo

Cyrus' shoulders sagged in relief. “Thank you. I do care about you, Severo. You are my friend, and I love you…in a nonsexual way.”

xoxoxoxo

“That look could kill,” Cyrus drawled when the Nymph was out of earshot.

“I know!” Severo gushed. “Isn’t he great?!”

He stared in disgust at his friend.

xoxoxoxo

“You panicked, didn’t you?’

“She started crying!” Killian gasped in horror.

“There were no thoughts once the tears came!”

xoxoxoxo

“You are so weird.” Seri laughed.

“Mm, I am,” Severo agreed with a smile.

“But despite that, you like me anyway.”

“Mm, you are wrong. I love you because you are weird.

well worth the read

Okay for starters. This is a well placed slow burn. As you can tell from how many pages it’s has. ANYWHO! Seri and Severo’s relationship is honestly the fucking cutest and best. Seri is NOT a totally helpless mc and Severo is NOT an overbearing dominant ml.
This story did well to work through as aspects of the issues it presented. So well that my own trauma flash backs weren’t rearing as I thought they might. (There’s always a risk. PLEASE READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGs) although I love these types of books I have things that I can’t help a look back to.

NONETHELESS this story was most on an emotional power dynamic that I don’t see as much. (I mean there are books out there. Recommend me some!) I loved the realistic portrayal of these issues brought up and how they progressed through them.

Severo is such a crybaby cane corso (almost like a golden retriever but with a different image.) Seri is who I would say was the “dominant” one in the relationship if I would say. Not really a cat type if so I’d probably say a mane coon (please don’t fight me if I spelled that wrong)

LAST BUT NOT LEAST! Skya!!! SKYA SKYA SKYA omgsh I could gush and more. The author did well to portray the babies emotions through her baby speech. Because babies WILL tell you off. And Skya? Honey, just like her father. There’s one part that stays with me. When she was like “No Dah-Dah, No Oh-Oh” and then hmphed. I kid you not I’ve been laughing about this for HOURS. Cutest little sassy button. She is a ball of pure joy. If you’re iffy on the book. Honestly I would say just read it for her because her times interactions are so spot on to as if she was a human baby next to you it’s ridiculous. I also asked my mom to watch her kids. This is long. But I might just buy the hardback if I find it.

love this author

Ok, I’m gonna be completely honest, reading the blurb it took me a few days to start this one. I figured with Seri’s past this was going to be darker then I was in the mood for. But then I remembered how much I loved The Adventures of Harlow and Foxx and decided to take the plunge. This was so good! I loved how we got several different POVs, even from side characters, it really brought the story together.
And the MC’s! Loved them! Who knew Severo was such a dork and that kink! Yes, please!
Seri was so strong and learning bits here and there of what all he went thru but came out stronger made me love him even more. But for me I feel like Severo and Skya’s connection stole the show. It was adorable! And all the animal onesie’s, cuteness overload!
I also liked this wasn’t an insta-love story, how could it be with everything Seri had to worry about, even noticing how hot Severo was wasn’t even on his radar. Usually this would annoy me being so far into a book before something even remotely resembling attraction b/w the MC’s took this long but it just fit.
Last thing was that ending! Damn…..

What an emotional ride, this book pulled every emotional string possible. It made me cry, get mad, wish for a very painful vengeance, bite my nails in suspense, and scream. But there were sweet and tender moments that gave my poor heart a break, making it go all gooey. And of course can't forget the snarky humor which always makes me crack up.
Seri did not have a very happy life being emotional and physical abuse (please heed the trigger warnings) but found strength to survive. And once they escaped they did everything they could to ensure they would not be captured again. Severo was exactly what Seri needed to fight his demons (figuratively and literally), so supportive, patient, and loving. It does have a HEA but it sure was not an easy road there.
The secondary characters were also fully developed, adding to the story, not just fillers. Also the world building was excellent, detailed but not overdone with boring details. Now I need a couple more stories based on those secondary characters!!

I really like this authors work. And while I did enjoy parts of this book… There were moments that really felt like they dragged. I think part of it was that, and trying to introduce this world and these characters, there was moments where it felt like too much Explanation. It was like there was more telling over showing. I do understand why, and it makes sense because you want to teach us about this new world and these characters, but I think it dragged the story down a bit. And there were a few times where it felt like there was a disconnect , between the progression of the relationship and the actual storyline itself. Overall, I did enjoy this book, and I am looking forward to a second book in this series, especially now that the world has been established because I feel like that might be what I need in the next book. I feel like if we don’t have to learn so much about this world, it will add to the enjoyment of the overall story.

Beautiful story! ❤️

I laughed so much reading this, and cried my heart out too. I love this story so much! Seri is a little badass and so freaking adorable as well as Skya. Hell, even Severo is adorable. He's so cool! I love their families and their found family. I can't get enough of this amazing story. I didn't want it to end. The ending was glorious, though. 😂
I love all the action and hurt/comfort and the lovely revenge! The cover for this book is gorgeous. I couldn't stop going to it to stare at Seri. He's sooo beautiful. Skya is the best! I had so much fun reading about her personality and the hilarity of her copying ways. She's so dang cute! She's the sweetest little nymphant. ❤️
This is the first book I've read by Shelby Rhodes, and I will definitely be checking out any other books I can find by this author. This story is excellent. It's so well written.

Hi, yes, I would like one Severo for my own, please and thank you.

I loved every part of this book. Real life got in the way or I would’ve devoured it in one sitting. The characters, the world building and lore, the wild plot, and that ending… phew.😮‍💨😌 So satisfying.

Skya was absolutely precious, I want my own Severo, Seri was such a fantastic example of surviving and thriving through trauma, and Preston deserved worse than he got, but what he got was pretty poetic. Oh, and literally everyone else was written so well that I have an entire mental list of stories I’m pretty certain I need to survive on this planet.

The mechanics were meh, but I don’t even care. I am desperate for the next book.

4.25/5. Killian would be my super best friend, thank you that is all.

Story from multiple POV

For me the characters are the best parts of this story by Shelby Rhodes. The story is told from multiple points of view which in the wrong hands could have been a confusing mess but Ms Rhodes does an amazing job of weaving all of these elements together and has produced a fantastic tale of survival. I was actually amazed by how quickly this fairly long story seemed to go but that may have been because once I stared it I had a hard time putting it down. (Four AM!) I really liked how Seri was not written just as a victim even though terrible things had happened to him. Ms Rhodes uses a light touch and brings in some of her trademark humor but this story is definitely darker than most of her writing so read the warnings if you have triggers.

Wow that ending..

OK, yes i would recomend this book, it ticks all my gay fantasy paranormal romance genre boxes. The MCs are great, good character building for one mc and storytelling w9rks well with revealing their backgrounds gradually throughout.

However, I do also like mysteries and crime solving and at one point this book looked like it was going down that path, but it didn't. Where I was anticipating it going into clue finding investigation and revelations, the plot focused on the building relationship between the two mcs and kept a lot of the investigation part off page, which was disappointing, only because I was already invested in what sounded like a great plot line.

I have to say this is one of Shelby Rhodes' best works. If I didn't have to go to work, I would have never put this book down. Seri's life as a whole was tear jerking and just like Severo, I wanted to crush every single person who hurt Seri, or would try to cause him harm. The relationship between Seri and Severo develops sweetly despite their rough beginning. Having someone finally by his side, Seri was able to fight his demons and stand strong in the end. This story is definitely an inspiration for those dealing with trauma of abuse. Catching a Water Nymph is a must read! You definitely won't regret it.

I loved this book. Seri North escapes after being in held in captivity against his will for nearly six years. On the run he not only has to protect himself but his child Skya. Seri never thought he'd be framed for murder which brings a C.E.B agent named Severo Ambrose to his door. Severo believes Seri is innocent and hates having to bring him in. After Severo captures Seri who has Skya with him they head back to Earth. A attempted kidnapping of Seri and Skya makes Severo take them into hiding to protect them. Severo shows Seri that not all shadow dwellers are evil like the on who held him against his will for all those years. Can they overcome the dangers they face together?

Loved the slow burn romance and healing from past trauma theme of this book!

However, as much as the premise was great, this was way too long. It felt like I was reading a ton of filler episodes.

But then again, I think this was the whole point of the book? It focuses much more on the MC’s journey to escape his captor, and heal. Plot is on the back burner for this one. While it does wrap up nicely, it could have cut out unnecessary plot points and finish it in less than 300 pages.

Side note: I seriously love the drawings at each start of the chapter. It’s something I always look forward to when I reach the start of a new chapter lol.

Reviewed in the United States on February 21'2024.I loved Seri North and Severo Ambrose. Seri was trying to get save himself and his unborn child from the monster who tortured him and kidnapped him and hid him against will.Severo had a bad feeling that there was something more to it than what was shown on the report. When Severo saw Seri they didn't know he had a child. Severo friend Cyrus interfered and a lot of people got hurt including Seri who got kidnapped again and was sent back to the same person

The ending is perfect! I really enjoyed so many aspects of this story. Shelby does very well keeping the plot moving and holding a readers interest. The characters are well developed and the world building was fantastic. The trauma and trauma responses were well done, the gender fluidity was well explained. I feel there are many more directions this series can expand in. I felt some issues were not resolved (the nymph community misogyny, Cryptid Means, Severos family ties) but I'm hoping this means more books are forthcoming! Great writing!

Thriving not just surviving.

Wow, this book will take you through a complete range of emotions.
Seri is a survivor & Severo is perfect as the man who gives him the care, support & love needed to live his life thriving in all it has become. Skya is adorable & feisty, so cute.
There is trauma, so heed the trigger warnings, but seeing the healing occurring even through the saddest, hardest fear facing moments is beautiful.
I don't want to spoil anything so all I'll say is the final part with Preston was unexpected and a bit shocking, but so, so perfect.

Hooked from the first page! From the moment I started reading, I was completely captivated by Seri North's journey. Seri finds himself entangled in a harrowing ordeal after a date with a rich, psychotic Shadow Dweller. What follows is a heart-pounding saga of captivity, trauma, and the astonishing strength of the human (or nymph) spirit.

Shleby does and excellent job balancing the dark and gritty aspects of Seri's six-year captivity sharing the true resilience and hope for better that he had. The story truly takes off when Seri, heavily pregnant, makes a daring escape, igniting a thrilling chase that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The twist of being accused of murder and encountering Severo Ambrose, an unexpected agent from the Cryptid Enforcement Bureau, adds layers of intrigue and suspense.

Severo's character is a revelation. Unlike the Shadow Dweller that kept him captive, he brings a depth and warmth that is both surprising and endearing. The evolving relationship between Seri and Severo is beautifully crafted, highlighting themes of healing and love that blossom in the unlikeliest of circumstances. The emotional depth and raw vulnerability in their interactions make their love story profoundly moving.

This is more than just another romance read; it's a story of overcoming immense odds, finding love in unexpected places, and the power of inner strength. The pacing is perfect, the character development is exceptional, and the plot twists are both shocking and satisfying. I couldn't put it down and was left eagerly anticipating what would happen next.

In short, this is a must-read for anyone who loves a story that combines intense action, deep emotional resonance, and a beautifully crafted romance.

Five stars don't seem enough to do it justice!

Great new series

Great new series. Seri is a water nymph who was kidnapped 6 years ago, we start with him finally escaping his captor. Severo is a Cryptid Enforcement Bureau operative who is sent to capture Seri for murder. Both characters are very likeable. The story is gripping. This is a darker story than Shelby's other novels. Be aware of potential triggers. HEA. Thoroughly enjoyed, can't wait for the next book.

so much feels

I was hesitant at first with reading this. I’ve read so many books with a similar plot. I was waiting to see when the shoe would drop( toxic red flag ML). But Severo is an entire green forest. He alone would’ve made love this book but Seri was such a badass. I’m so happy they had their HEA. Skya was such an adorable baby,, it’s really hard for me to fall with kid characters because they are so badly written some times but she was so cute.. ☺️

Unique

The story had promise and I enjoyed most of it. The cover, I am afraid, almost had me looking else where. The ending was a dead end. While he got what he deserved, the author would have had better luck, in another direction. While I did like the characters, and the story line was a good one, certain parts need work. This is the 3rd book by this author and I find that it is a take or leave situation.

I was a little worried about finishing this book as it is over 500 pages. I love reading, but most authors can’t keep a 500 page book interesting enough. I LITERALLY could not stop reading this book. Shelby is wonderful author, I mean the world building alone was off the charts. Definitely worth the read!!

Clutching my pearls

This book had me from start to finish. I hate the trauma that Seri endured, but love the way they were written as a survivor and not a victim. The realness in this book is amazing to witness. Hurt, betrayal, tears, laughter, friendship, family and love are all here. This is a great read and can be the start of a great series if the author wishes to continue it.
