I ended up finishing two books before this one, and War Zone was only 217 pages! That should tell you a bit about this one. I have a love hate relationship with the Guardians series. I love 1980’s WW3 novels, and the post apocalyptic world, and seeing what people thought the future would hold. The Guardians were one of the first books I gravitated to when I first started my journey down this genre, and now, I feel like I’m stuck with them.

War Zone suffered the same problems as book 1-5. Richard Austin FILLS the pages with unnecessary amounts of filler. You will go pages and pages reading about a gun and its sling, which adds NOTHING to the story. So you find yourself drifting off, not remotely comprehending what you just read.

He also adds WAY TOO MANY characters in every book. By the time you’re a third into the book, you’re already trying to remember who is who. And the battle scene, which should be the best part of the books, are always a mess. Way too many details, that have you confused as to what exactly is happening. It’s maddening!

With ALL that said, there is still some charm to the series and War Zone. You can tell when Austin is in the “groove” so to speak, and isn’t filling the pages with nonsense to make the book longer than 100 pages, because that’s when the book flies by. You get sucked into the story and characters at these parts and it keeps you going.

I say this with every Guardians book, “maybe the next one will be better and change,” and that has yet to happen. At this point, I have almost all the books bought, so I am stuck with this series until the end. But like every book so far, I’m going to take a much needed break after this one. And hey, who knows, maybe the next one will be better!

A big of a slog, but fine nevertheless. 3 out of 5 stars.
