Someone beside me by N. Slater (@slater.47) is the first book in the Passion Series.
First of all, before you start with this book, be sure to check out the TWs, because your mental health always comes first.
This book leaves me breathless … at the end I couldn’t read fast enough to get to know how it will end. N. Slater you got on my favorite author list. 🩵
The story had so much suspense, angst, as well as lust and don’t forget the plot twists. I loved all MCs, the FMC tries to survive in her small hometown and has to fight a lot against all the prejudices and gossip. But she fights to fulfill her duty as a coroner against all odds. The four MMCs struggle all with their demons from the past in their own way. You have two detectives, an ex-military turned barista and the mysterious fourth MMC from a 3 letter agency. The ways from the MCs cross in the FMCs hometown and their shared journey with a lot of spice begins. So if you like a really good why choose, crime mystery, go grab this book and start reading.
The second book Random Selection will be released in June 27th.
Quotes: "I want-" He chuckled, fixing her dress, and setting her feet back on the floor. "I know what you want, baby girl. But I'm not going to do that here. Not for our first time."
Her eyes widened as she observed the man blushing before her. This was what she was missing, the history, their desires, wants, hobbies - she was missing the parts that made them different, that made them who they were.
Mia screamed at the sensation as her entire body thrummed with heat. Her fingers dug into the duvet as she shamelessly rode Nichlas' mouth, chasing an orgasm that had her crying out, an explosive warmth coating her skin. Between the two of them, she was going to die today if their devious smiles were anything to go by.
"Sweetheart, I'm going to eat you out while you watch our boys over there. How's that sound?"
This story follows a small town naive coroner who has faced many challenges from an abusive relationship, to a no good fiancé, to being tortured. Her constant struggles and traumas is what had me on the edge of my seat. It starts off fairly innocent but as the story progresses a lot of new developments come into the fold. This was an intense read filled with drama, self discovery, recovering from trauma (both mental and physical), unrequited love and of course passion. What would a Slater book be without some MM action and a polycule? it’s her thing and we love it. There were a few confusing details which made it a solid 4 stars from me but it was well worth the read. If you enjoy intense crime, mystery, budding romance, broody bad boys and a hint of caddy bitchiness this book is for you. This book does have content warnings so please be advised and check them out before reading.
This was something really different. It's a small town romance but with a spicy RH poly relationship that grows. It's also a creative murder mystery, with a mysterious serial killer, multiple suspects, and signs of corruption and conspiracy. It kept me gripped throughout and the ending was a great twist. The dynamics of the group are intense and steamy, and looking forward to their next adventures together.
Okay first question is if there was anything I didn't like the only thing I didn't like was the narration for some reason the third person POV type narration irritated me a little on this one but other than that it was freaking awesome.
The next question is if I would recommend this book the answer is hell yeah it has a bunch of suspense and love and spice it's a great read and what I will recommend to everyone in fact I've already recommended it to my sister and a couple of friends who read this type of book
of course Matty is my favorite of her guys fell in love with him instantly next up is Nichlas I guess you could say I love them both equally they are the best and then Jan is third and then can kenn that's the order I fell in love with them but they're all freaking awesome this was a great book I didn't want to put it down I can't wait for the next one to be out I already know it's going to be freaking awesome
This was a great read. Lots of twists and turns. Great character development. Realistic views of mental health. I'm excited to see where the next book takes us!
Our main female character goes from an abusive relationship into a relationship with 4 new guys in town. She's worried about all the gossip in her small town and how she's going to navigate such a weird dynamic with her new men. On top of that, she's dealing with a string of murders and they are all trying to figure out who the killer is.
This book takes us on a wild, unpredictable, lovely ride!

So good! While I thought the relationship progressed a bit fast, I love the mix of criminal mystery and heat. The dynamic between the male leads is wonderful, and well written, and the way they all have different approaches to Mia is very entriguing. It is easy to relate to Mia, and her evolution throughout the book is so amazing and realistic. And her sidekick Quinn is both adorable and badass. I cant wait for the next one!
This was a very different read for me. It was more thriller than I expected but still so good. Yet, I mean adding the MMMMF dynamic into it all, and you have a very interesting read. I'm excited about Book two but couldn't even tell you where I think it could even go. I just know with N. Slater it's better to expect the unexpected.
The plot was amazing Lots of twists and turns. They’re all my favorites but Matthias baby but I love Mia and all her men. It’s a must read I love everything about this book
I liked to story overall but it felt like I was reading a wattpad novel. The storyline moved really quickly and there wasn’t a lot of character development
Really enjoyed this book! I went into it blind so I had no idea what to expect. The only things I didn't like was that there were so many POVs that it felt a bit all over the plans and that it was 3rd person- but I'm just not used to either of those. The mystery and suspense isn't something I'm used to reading but I found that I like it! Poor Mia has been through hell in her small town and just keeps getting more things thrown at her. Enter in 4 (yes 4!) new hotties in town. Mia soon learns that her suspicions at her job weren't for nothing. With the help of all the guys they are able to figure things out! Notice I didn't say they solved the case....ready for book #2!!
DNF. It was extremely hard to read. It was as if every few pages information was missing. At one point the page ended in the middle of a sentence and the next page started with a new sentence. This happened over and over. It was also a very slow read.
This is the story of Mia, Matthias, Kenn, Jan, and Nichlas.
Mia is the town's coroner. She is really struggling with her ex and his new wife and everything that comes with living in a small town. When dead bodies keep showing up in Mia's lab, she starts piecing things together but continually gets shrugged off until 4 big and beautiful men arrive and turn her whole world upside down...
I really loved this book so much and can't wait to see if their story continues....
It was great to see that Mia stayed true to her true self no matter what she and her men went through. She was also so sweet and kind, and it was amazing to see her stand up for herself to her bullies. Her men truly helped with her confidence and helped show her how she should be loved.
Moving onto her men, I can't choose between them. They are so beautiful and obviously dangerous, but I think I have a soft spot for Matthias. He was so cute towards Mia, and it was obvious that he needed her just as much as he needed the others. The way the relationships between Nichlas, Matthias, Kenn, and Jan went from really close best friends to something more was beautiful, and it was great to see Mia accepting them for who they are.
Again, I hope there is a book 2 because this story is filled with so many twists and turns and so many questions I need answers for. My mind was exploding!!!!
I was fortunate to receive an ARC copy of this book. I really appreciate it. All opinions are my own 😊
🖤 mmc's with dark pasts and secrets 🖤 why choose 🖤 smutty scenes 🖤 mm spicy scenes 🖤 Dark romance 🖤 sweet fmc
Holy crap on a cracker, this book is insane!!!! I loved it so so much!!!!!!!!!! Honestly, one of the best RH books I've read. Absolutely in love with this series. Can't wait to start shouting it from the rooftops!
Fate Can Always Find You…Even in the Middle of Nowhere 😉
This book will hook you in the very first chapter. Wanna know how? Ok, I’ll tell you. You get to meet our smart, sassy, feisty FMC Mia, and watch her dodge a nightmare of an ex who definitely deserve her. Then you get to meet 2 mysterious men who catch Mia talking to the people who hang out at her job (umm, she’s the coroner & they’re ☠️, so they don’t really talk back 😝😂). I don’t know about y’all, but that was enough for me, especially since the banter & conversation flowed beautifully & Mia’s internal dialogue was thoroughly entertaining. It just got better from there (I freakin loved the dry humor scattered throughout this book), and by the time the last chapter scrolled onto my screen, I was wondering who I needed to bribe to get part 2, cause I desperately neeeeeeed more of these characters. Mia & her guys were perfection, whether they were talking back & forth, trying to solve the town’s mysteries (it’s totally not gonna be what you’re thinking 😉), dealing with drama from all sorts of townspeople who needed their head examined, orrrrr doing other extra curricular activities that made my Kindle sit up & give me the side eye 👀🫣😝🥵🔥😈 And the guys??? Ahhhhhh 😍 They stole my heart, made me laugh, made me swoon, made me fan myself, made me wanna smack them upside the head (a few times 😝😂), made me shake my head (A LOT 🙄), then broke my heart, but they were smart enough to put it back together ❤️ Just imagine all the ups & downs and twists & turns that Mia found herself maneuvering through since she was in the middle of it, and her emotions & anxiety were ALLLL out of whack. Yet one of the best things those guys did, from the moment they walked into Mia’s life, was give our girl all the support & affection she had been missing out on from everyone around her for years. How could Mia (or myself) not fall for them 🤷🏻♀️ I basically just loved & devoured every single chapter in this hot & spicy whychoose mystery (including unexpected POVs) that was full of equal parts suspense & romance, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book with this amazing group of characters & all the delicious possibilities, especially after that dark & emotionally charged ending that led us to a sort of HFN for Mia & her guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hot Take: If you're in the mood for a fiery, unpredictable ride, Someone Beside Me by N. Slater will keep you glued to every page. This spicy why-choose, poly romance serves up a delicious mix of intrigue, passion, and dark humor.
Plot Summary: Mia’s life takes a nosedive when her fiancé ditches her for a redhead he met on a business trip. Heartbroken but resilient, Mia shifts her focus to her work at the coroner’s office, where the body count is mysteriously rising. Enter four enigmatic men, each cloaked in their own brand of darkness. They’re here to help with the case, but they also spark new mysteries—and desires—for Mia.
What I Loved: - Mia’s Fierce Independence: She’s not just “the girl who plays with dead bodies”; she’s a force to be reckoned with. Her determination to uncover the truth amidst personal turmoil makes her a compelling protagonist. - The Sizzling Chemistry: The dynamics between Mia and the four men are electrifying. The blend of romance, suspense, and steamy encounters is expertly woven. - Plot Twists and Turns: Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, Slater throws in a curveball that leaves you gasping.
Heads Up: This book is not for the faint-hearted. It dives into explicit scenes, and some darker themes like emotional and physical situations, mild assault, and kidnapping. If you're sensitive to these topics, consider yourself warned.
Final Verdict: Someone Beside Me is a wickedly enticing read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you're up for a wild, tantalizing story that’s as thrilling as it is heartwarming, dive in. Just don’t expect to come up for air anytime soon.
There is so much angst and wth moments in this book and dear god can anymore happen to this poor girl. Mia has lived her life as an outcast, everyone taking a stab at her, making her life hell. She finds herself trying to figure out what is going on with all the dead bodies that come into her morgue. If that isn't enough drama she has to deal with an ex and his crazy wife. On top of that four of the hottest guys she has ever seen just walked into her life. Jan, Kenn, Mathias and Nicolas are lethal, a little dangerous and so much baggage. Jan and Kenn are sent to help the local sheriff. Nicolas is sent to report on the ex and his crazy wife. However, things are not what they seem and the 5 of them find themselves in so mush deceit and lies that they don't know who to trust. The relationship between Mia and her guys is really sweet and with that they relationship with the men also turns as well. What that all unfold and the strength and love that they show one another is heart warming.
I went into this book not knowing what to expect and it blew me away. Mia has been treated like shit in her hometown and it was so amazing to see her growth and self empowerment over the course of the story. By the end she is a kick ass FMC. Her 4 male love interests are amazing as they are not perfect and put together. They are dark and have very deep scars. I felt this gave them a sense of humility and really helped the reader connect with them. I totally did not see the ending until it was in my face. this was the first mystery romance I have read and it has definitely created a new interest for me.
When I finished reading I went straight to amazon to get book 2 and was devastated finding out it would not be released till the 27th. It is going to be a long 2 weeks waiting. Cannot wait to what happens to Mia and her men in book 2.
P.S I am seriously hoping for more MM development as I can see so much potential with all 4 men becoming sexual with each other.
It was such an intense storyline, and each of the characters brought so much into each setting. Mia is an incredibly likable character, and I found myself really drawn to her quite a bit. The plot itself was so intense, and there were so many incredible themes. I found myself on the edge of my seat for the majority of the storyline, because I simply couldn't put it down.
It was a super fast read for me, and I DEVOURED it. That doesn't even cover the spice. Oh my GOD. The spice scenes were absolutely insane, in the best way, and I found myself kicking my feet and hiding my face (especially when I made the very sane choice to read this one with other people around me). The entire dynamic of the group was so fun to read, and it was very unlike other books that I have read before this.
The murder mystery was the highlight, but the characters made this entire story excellent. I am SO EXCITED for Random Selection to come out!
Someone Beside Me was a read that I went into blind by Nic.
I love reverse harem, why choose romances and Nic did not disappoint with this one! I will say, RH books is definitely Nic's niche and she does not disappoint with her dark romance books with this specific troupe at all! I loved the suspense aspect with the dead bodies popping up and the dynamic with Mia and her guys! The spice in this was a 4/5, Nic knows how to write some of the best spicy scenes I've read in a RH troupe book. There was a scene for EVERYBODY and she writes them extremely well! I enjoyed the plot twists, it added a lot of suspense and thrills to the read. Well rounded with emotions, overcoming trauma, love, and so much more. If you want a read that will keep you on your toes and have some great spicy scenes, this is it!
Okay so there is A LOT going on in this book 😅Lots of missing pieces coming together & lots of different players apart of those pieces. I will say it was a little bit of a struggle to keep up with who did what and how this person and that person fits, but it was still a good book! I enjoyed the relationship between the 4 guys and how they knew each other before Mia was introduced to their group. Matthias was hands down my favorite guy 🫶🏾 Poor Mia did not deserve half of the stuff she went through in this book but her guys were there for her & definitely did anything to keep her safe which I loved ❤️ Can’t wait to see where this group goes in the next book & the relationships that develop within the harem!
Someone beside me book one I really love this poly romance I really enjoyed the FMC she really is an underdog like I love the things happen to her but she didn't push or let anybody stop her or live her life and moving forward even in the town full of small-minded people she's a coronary and working working late night I love that she meets these men that come into town totally hot that story apply between the characters was interested can my attention I'm really looking forward to reading book too to really continue to dive deep into each character in the story plot like this is a book that will patch A Punch If you looking for a book that looks great story plot great sexual attention great sexual encounters and good Banner between the characters this is a great book to
Had a chance to read this when it was on Inkitt and damn, this is a fantastic read. I love this author and have read almost all their stuff before they pushed over into the publishing world. This is one of my favorite series from them - a bit of suspense mixed in with all the romance. I love that the main character breaks out of her shell and the love/character development you see will all of them is a wonderful thing. I never knew what was going to happen next and the ending was a bit surprising. It is a long read so you gotta strap in and buckle up but definitely worth it! I went and bought a physical copy and am just waiting for it to come in. Can't wait for book 2!
I enjoyed the premise of the story, the characters and the progression. However, the hardest thing for me with this particular story was that it was written and third person, and I really struggled when it was one character characters chapter, but yet they were referring to themselves as their own name or she/he. It kept making me second-guess whose point of view I was reading from and caused me to have some disconnect with the characters because I never really felt like I was truly following their POV.
This storyline is filled with mystery, intrigue with twist and turns. Being a coroner of a very small town should be filled with nothing right? Wrong. There are too many bodies that keep showing up with no way to know what happened. Then four sexy, yet secretive guys show up to help with these investigations. When things become too much for this small town coroner, can she turn to the guys for help.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really enjoyed Mia and her men. I loved the mystery and the suspense in the story. The plot was amazing and I felt invested in the story. I needed to find out what the heck was going on. It is a bit of a slower burn than I'm used to from this amazing author but it doesn't detract from the story. I love the relationship between Mia and her men and I loved even more when the men discovered their feelings for each other. I can't wait for book 2.
Someone Beside Me, Book 1 of the Passion series, by N. Slater @slater.47. First off, I am a fan of Nic’s & this book was no different!
Sweet & suspenseful at the same time? Yes, please! I loved this book about Mia, Matthias, Nichlas, Kenn & Jan! Mia learned to stick up for herself, which was great to see. If you like RH with an intro to MM, suspense, characters that grow, & love is love, then you'll love this book.
Small town medical examiner, unexplained murders, a toxic ex, crooked cops and 4 beautiful but lethal men are the ingredients to a great story. All the characters were well developed. I fell for each of 4 as individuals but a whole vibe when they are together. The steamy was good and just enhanced the story without taking over. Immediately downloaded the 2nd book cause I'm vested.
At the beginning it didn't hook me up that much, but few pages in the story becomes more twisted and full of plots and I realized I couldn't put the book down. I cannot pick a character as favourite as each one is completely different than the others, except in the protection part I would say.
I just finished a really complex book with lots of missing pieces and different characters. It was a bit hard to keep track of everything, but I still enjoyed it. My favorite character was Matthias, and I loved the bond between the 4 guys. Mia went through a lot, but her guys were there for her. Excited to see what happens next in the series!
