… her story as recounted here is a combination of extensive, direct evidence of her existence presented in concert with certainties, probabilities, inferences, informed speculation, and guesswork. It is, to my mind, the most likely story of Anarcha's life, but it is not the only possible story that lurks behind Sim's veil of obfuscations and half-truths, a deceitful fiction that has stood as factual history for almost two centuries. In an oft repeated story, Anarcha is credited as being the first patient on whom Sims performed the surgical repair. Examining her condition he had at first decided to send her back to her “owner” as inoperable, but at that moment an accident victim was brought to Sims, and the condition of the accident victim reminded him of a technique for correcting an inverted uterus. It was a technique that would allow access for surgery. So instead of sending Anarcha home he decided to ask her to stay and he would try his idea on her.
