Birds of Prey #2

Shrike: Birds of Prey: Book Two

Rate this book
After the events of Albatross (the kidnapping, Isla's real identity, a gruesome murder— he definitely deserved it, but still) left everyone reeling, Shrike picks up right where we left off with Isla, Fritz, and Caspian struggling to find answers.
And a certain missing redhead.
The introduction of Eamon and his Arcana Militum changes everything, giving them the upper hand needed to rescue Bel.
But does he have to irritate Isla every step of the way?
Yes. Of course, he does.
Even if they manage to free Bel, the things she's seen will stay with her forever, the consequences of someone else's sins weighing her down once again.
Not only will Bel transform, both inside and out, but every one of them is irrevocably changed through the events of Shrike, for better or worse.

Shrike is book two in the Birds Of Prey Duology, a duet about unlikely heroes, misunderstood villains, and deeply flawed characters finding love in a world that seems Vankhala-bent on keeping them apart.

Karlee is a paranormal romance author who loves the unconventional, anti-hero love interests. She creates characters who are deeply flawed portrayals of trauma, the kind of character readers will be able to see themselves in and feel a little bit less alone. Of course, along side that, she lives for love stories. The dirty kind, obviously.

She lives with her husband and daughter in Arizona, soaking up the sunshine as much as possible when she's not stuck in her fantasy worlds.

If you fell in love with Caspian in Albatross, get ready to fall twice as hard for Fritz in Shrike. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. Eamon is sure to tickle your fancy. Cinnamon roll that's extra extra HOT but also all the stern daddy vibes. Anyways back to our dearest Fritzy. Legend. Myth. The demon of the hour (let's be honest, of all time, sorry Cas no hard feelings!) We pick right up where we left off (thanks for that BTW Karlee you the real OG for that) and if you thought Bel was a badass in Albatross oooh baby, just you wait and see what our gorgeous Bel can do. We get more of our feisty Isla and *gasp* a possible love connection? Don't worry it's tote enemies to lovers and while this book was more enemies than lovers I cannot wait to watch Isla give into all the daddy Eamon vibes. I just know he's loves to give a good spanking and then cuddles you after. One of my favorite things about Karlee's books is the chapter titles. They are brilliant and crack me up and I LOVE finding the chapter titles in the chapters. It's like a little easter egg hunt. Oh I almost forgot to mention... chapters upon chapters of delicious spice with our favorite trio. You will laugh, you will cry, you will be sweaty and hot all over. Dare I say it? MOIST. You will be MOIST. Do not miss out on Shrike. If you like demons and sassy strong FMCs who get railed into oblivion (don't we all? Hurt's to see someone living your dream am I right?) then this book is for you. Karlee you beautiful sadist, you've done it again.

Allow me to introduce you to the sequel to one of my favorite reads of 2023…🤤 Book one is Albatross and this is book two, Shrike. YUM. I ate this up!! 👏

I LOVED this. It was short, spicy and humorous with twists that had me on my toes. I love Karlee’s Birds of Prey series SO MUCH. These are perfect for a funny and casual yet smutty read.

I will probably recommend these books forever because they’re just so fun and enjoyable and I loooove a good monster/demøn romance.

I loved this book as much as the first one. Our main characters are there from book one with more hilarity and spice.
I loved the 2 characters we get to spend more time with and we'll definitely be reading their book too.

Karlee, thank you so so much for providing me an eARC for Shrike in exchange for an honest review.

For all of us that finished Albatross, I KNEW that Isla was a demon hunter…well kind of. But I LOVED her fierceness, despite everything she now knows, to go and save Bel and figure everything out. And thank goodness that there isn’t a time jump or anything. When I started this, I literally went back to Albatross, read the last chapter, and then picked Shrike up and started it.

The book was well-paced, I never felt like any parts were really dragging on. I honestly wish there was more exploration of some of the subplots that were mentioned in the book. But, I don’t think it would have detracted from the book without having them in the book.

It is so clear the love that Bel, Fritz, and Caspian have for each other, and the book really showcases how their love can withstand anything, time and the worldly dimensions themselves. Seeing Bel come out of her shell more to take control of what she wants (and needs), bar any consequences; Caspian fight for the woman that he loves, and loving her right; and Fritz, oh Fritz, finally getting to experience his own emotions for once, and not just feeding off of others—it was just so great to read about.

Not only does book two have all the smut you want following book one, it also has all the mundane family time you want too! Reading about Bel Fritz and Cas making this life for themselves adjusting to being a throuple made my heart sing, reading about them f^ckinf made my 🐱cry!
In all honesty this book has it all, killer plot that literally had me on edge! Unaliving that had me sobbing and some realisation that had me like 🤔.
The character development is insane not just from the FMC but from her bestie also and I’m excited to see where Isla’s story goes.
Take a bow karlee 👏

My Selling Pitch:
Girlypop accidentally summons a demon while reading an audiobook and now he and his boyfriend are dtf and by dtf, I mean down to face off with comically evil demon hunters and like celebrate Christmas for the vibes or whatever.

On my do not read list.

Pre-reading:
Look, do I particularly want to pick this book up? No. Do I need closure because I’m a compulsive finisher and I’ll get itchy otherwise? Unfortunately.

(obviously potential spoilers from here on)
Thick of it:
Oh just jumping in. Absolutely no recap. You are fucked if you did not just come off the first book lol.

It’s so cringe and insta love.

Yeah, you can kill someone in 30 seconds though. Like he's actively holding a machine gun.

Smut is not as good as the first book.

Italian for Xmas is weird to me.

I'm so bored.

The dialogue is so stilted.

This book is so disjointed. It was like look, we’re a revenge thriller, and then look, we’re just erotica, and then look, we’re just a cozy romance! And I’m like can we pick a lane?

It’s just so much filler.

This book is so stupid and repetitive.

Didn't this book say it was spicier at the very beginning? I feel like the first book was because it actually had tension.

Post-reading:
I already had low expectations from reading the first one, but this book just expounded on the original’s flaws. The writing is incredibly disjointed. There’s no flow to the book’s events. It’s very stop and start. Now we’re a bad thriller. Now we’re a cozy romance. Now we’re erotica. Villains are evil for the sake of being evil. The characters are flat. The new relationship is even more insta love. Nothing works. The whole thing felt very Wattpad. The smut lost all of its tension, and the scenes felt choppy and rushed. There was just nothing for me in this book. Go read better.

Who should read this:
Smut for the lols readers

Ideal reading time:
It’s a Christmas book technically

Do I want to reread this:
Nope.

Would I buy this:
Nope.

Shrike ARC Review

Plot ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

So in all honesty I truly stumbled across a request for ARC readers of Shrike, I signed up, and was one of the lucky ones chosen. I hadn’t read the first book Albatross (which you totally need to in order to read Shrike BTW) but I was sent a copy of Albatross to read before Shrike and OMG I’m so glad I stumbled upon this series. If you’ve read Albatross your gonna wanna continue reading the series, if you haven’t go get it so you can read Shrike!!! I basically read them back to back.

I loved the fact that Shrike picks up right where we left off in Albatross and not one of those series where book two starts off “six months later” (big pet peeve of mine with series, but I digress). Bel, who we all know is a bad a$$ in her own right truly comes to life in book two and not only takes charged with her life, she takes charge of her sexuality and it’s freaking HOT AF🥵. I was super stoked to hear more about Fritz in book 2 … sorry Caspian you’re crazy hot and everything but DAMN I want my own Fritz 🫠🫠🫠 Bel, Caspian, and Fritz❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥these three are on fire and Caspian & Fritz would burn the world down for their girl Bel. There is no denying the love here and once all are open to it magical things happen ✨ I can’t say more or it’ll spoil it and I hate giving away too much.

Oh and let’s not forget about Bel’s feisty best friend Isla who has some secrets of her own revealed in Shrike. Plus we get introduced to Eamon … or should I say Daddy Eamon 🫣 I’m not even kidding you about the vibes this guy throws off. Everything about him screams “Daddy”. There’s definitely some enemies to lover shit going on between him and Isla … is that a spoiler? Cause seriously you know as soon as these two meet there’s gonna be so MUCH MORE to them & can’t wait!!

I’ll leave you all with this … the “BJU” scene will live rent free in my head FOREVER!!!

Shrike is the why choose, dark, paranormal romance of your dreams! If you're a fan of demonic monster men with antlers, you need Birds of Prey.

I LOVE how Karlee incorporates light-hearted mundane events with large scale dangerous situations. Caspian, Fritz, and Bel celebrate their first Christmas together (it's ADORABLE) and Caspian finds himself with a new work opportunity all while plotting to rescue Bel and being hunted down by an organization larger than they realize. The plot is perfecting paced, allowing lots of space for smut!

I highly applaud Karlee for how this why choose is written. I never felt that Bel spent too much time with Caspian over Fritz or vice versa. It felt very even yet individualized depending on which monster man she was engaging with. I'm also a huge fan of having MM within an MFM and Karlee does NOT disappoint! Caspian and Fritz also get the chance to teach Bel some new tricks that had me feeling all of the things.

While Shrike does focus primarily on Caspian, Fritz, and Bel, we get an introduction to a new character, Eamon! The dynamic between Isla and Eamon is definitely a rocky one, however, I'm holding onto hope that we'll get to see them again and they'll develop a relationship of their own.

I highly recommend you read the first book in this duet before picking up Shrike as there are many plot points, developments, and background information that are necessary to have a firm understanding of where the story begins and what's happening. However, Birds of Prey is a witty, light, and fun paranormal romance that is well worth the read!

Thank you to Karlee Berrios for allowing me an ARC of Shrike in exchange for an honest review! All opinions are my own.

Excuse me Caspian and Fritz 🥵😈🔥. Where and how can I summon me some of these two delicious demons 🫣😜 *asking for a friend*

This is book 2, and we pick up where we left off. And Bel was super hot and bad ass in book 1 but in this book we see her on an entirely new level. This girl had me yelling at her while reading 😂 she definitely explored beyond the horizon especially with Fritz and their play time 🥵🌶️🔥 why is it that he sounds more bad boy than Caspian.

“Why are soul-bonds created if demons are evil, vile, twisted things? Why would your creator gift them a soulmate if they’re so terrible?”

Then we are introduced with a possible new love connection 🫣 demon and woman? Eamon and Isla 🥵 I can definitely picture this enemies to lovers relationship and it’s so hot!

“How dare that fuckhead try to flirt with me like that? Calling me sweetheart like that? Gag.”

“I look at Fritz for guidance, though I should know better. He’s pointing at them with one hand and blocking their view of his face with his other so that he can mouth: They’re gonna fuck.”

Omg this part had me dying of laughter, I could picture Fritz perfectly when reading this part of the book.

2.5-3 stars. Don't let my 2 star rating fool you. You'll probably enjoy this! It just didn't hit for me.
I suffered from sequel slump. For me, this one just lacked the plot that the first had. Don't get me wrong, spice in a book is great (and the spice was great). However, for me, I usually need a balance. It seemed like I had to read between spicy scene after spicy scenes (I know... poor me) in order to make it to the plot. The plot is there, you just have to wait for it to come back to you is all.

The spice was great. The emotional development between Bel, Cas, and Fritz is great (and handled well I'd say). The hint at (perhaps) the next book with Isla and Eammon was also great. I just wanted more plot. I found the world Berrios created interesting with demons who maybe aren't so demonic (as in bad - they have horns and powers etc) and the religious faction that fights against them (and kind of are evil/demonic in their aims). Some plot development was just either too fast or felt like it happened and then had to quickly wrap up.

Too long; didn't read:
Love the characters. Love the tension in the world (demons vs. religious zealots). Spice is great (but a lot). Wanted more story and less spice (who am I? lol).

‘I’ve known from the beginning you two were meant to be here with me, I never needed fate or the gods or whoever the f*ck else to give me permission.’

Shrike: Birds of Prey: Book Two by Karlee Berrios picks up with Caspian and Fritz trying to rescue Bel while dealing with soul bonds, Isla and Eamon at each other’s throats (definite smutty goodness to come from them, I hope) while navigating new issues that arise around every corner.

This book was fun, smutty and full of so many twists, while setting up the next book with Isla and Eamon. If you like sassy FMCs, dirty talking demons who will burn the world to the ground for you and chapter after chapters of delicious spice then this is the prefect sequel for you.

Make sure to check out ‘Harpy: A Birds of Prey story’ (book 3) out now!

‘I love you more than the heavens love the earth. More than darkness craves the light. More than words will ever convey.’

‘I want every part of you. The ones you’ve been taught to believe are wrong. The ones you’ve been told are ugly. The ones you’ve refused to show anyone else. I want them. I need them.’

Once again thank you Karlee for the ARC of these amazing characters.

Just when I thought I couldn't love the trio anymore, I was proven wrong. This half of their story had everything, laughs, tears, fear, and best of all love. Most importantly the spice spiced perfectly especially all of the group scenes. Karlee promised more group scenes and fun with Fritzy and she definitely delivered. She has made me realize I need more of guys whimpering and begging in the books I read, because Fritz has burst that door down with a laugh and a grin. The book picks up right from the end of the first one, which makes it so it will be a seamless read for those reading both back to back.

The addition of Eamon and Isla's tension was wonderful and made for a good background story beginning to build as well. Over the course of the book you see the stones being laid for a relationship between the two of them and it makes me giddy thinking of a potential story for them as well.

I just genuinely enjoyed everything about this book (especially those spicy scenes ohh lordy), and can't wait to read whatever Karlee puts out next!

Karlee karlee, what has the done to me??
5 🌟 4 🌶
This sequel was one that delivered in every aspect!! I was glued to the pages and was enveloped into this world with these amazing characters, old and new. A huge rescue mission, a new romance, so much smut, twists that will throw you, issues that everyone must face, many trials, and love that blooms to its full potential. This book will keep you fascinated and turned on the whole way through. It made me laugh, took me on an emotional rollercoaster, and had me white knuckling my eReader. Fritz really shines in this one, although i will always love my Caspian. Bel definitely knows what she wants and honestly im jealous lol. If the trigger warnings don't get you to read this book alone, then me telling you this monster/paranormal romance is one you won't regret diving into might do it.
What to expect.....
demons, a badass fmc, cinnamon roll mmcs, mm, mfm, banter, soul bonds, spice, multiple povs, antlers, poly, torture, marking, murder, suicide, lessons, bondage, double penetration
Tropes...
Enemies to lovers, praise, primal, forced proximity, poly, & why choose.

"I, uhh, please. Please, Bel. Lick it. Suck it. I don’t fucking care, just please touch it,”

"Fritzy?”
“Are you ready to be a good boy yet?

Shrike, the second half of the Birds of Prey Duology. I don't even know where to start. So much everything! The spice the plot just wow.

Already so inlove with Caspian, Albatross had me laughing so much with him learning about the new world add Fritzy in there you have a sexy demon sandwich. 😈

Bel, a badass FMC who overcomes so much and finds her power, and her dominant side (so sexy)
The relationship the three are growing is something we all want! (Well I definitely want 🤣)

"I love you more than the heavens love the earth. More than darkness craves the light. More than words will ever convey.”

The spice!!! BJU that is my new Roman empire.

Please please give us a Isla and Eamon book. The Tension between these two was jumping off the pages.

This book pretty much picks up after Albatross. So, you can't pick up this book without reading book one. Which, I can guarantee you that you will enjoy book one. What a shocker about Isla's identity. Yet, I am kind of now surprised as she did show herself to be a bada$$.

Caspian, Fritz, and Bel are back. Still a fan of Fritz. Not that I have anything against Caspian. I do love him and will always have a soft spot in my heart for him as he is the first one that started this journey.

The new addition of Eamon is yummy. He kept things interesting and added another layer of hotness. Plus, I liked seeing him and Isla interacting together. There is chemistry between them.

Albatross was hot but Shrike is next level HOT! Karlee, I was already in love with you before, but you really upped your game with this book.

✨ Why choose
✨ Everyone is a switch
✨ BJU
✨ Demons
✨ Fated mates

“Why are soul-bonds created if demons are evil, vile, twisted things? Why would your creator gift them a soulmate if they’re so terrible?” ~ Bel.

🖤 Bel is dealing with the trauma of her time with the hunters, while remaining an absolute badass. I didn’t think I could love her more but I do do. Her growth in Shrike is incredible!

In times like these, I think, What would a romance heroine do? Then, I do the exact opposite because romance heroines make bad choices. So I have to tell them. ~ Bel.

🖤 We get so much more of Fritz in Shrike and you’re seriously going to fall hard for this demon! But Caspian is still my favorite, sorry Fritzy.

“Caspian, my dearest friend? My soul brother that I like to fuck?” ~ Fritz.

“Please, Bel. I just need—I need you to sit on it—fuck. Please. I’ll be so good. I promise I’ll be so fucking good for you. Just—sit on it for a minute, please.” ~ Fritz.

“Not this time, Fritzy. I just wanna watch and hold her still while you split her open.” ~ Cas.

✨ Thankfully, Shrike picks up right where Albatross’s cliffhanger ending left off. I loved Albatross but I’m obsessed with Shrike, it is so freaking good and the spice is kicked up to an 11!

🖤 I’ve been saying since the end of Albatross that I can’t wait for Isla and Eamon’s book! After Shrike I know for sure that they are going to be an all time favorite. I’m obsessed with their enemies to lovers vibes, Isla’s badass hunter skills and devotion to her friends, and literally every domineering mysterious thing about Eamon.

The two of them will either kill each other or be the most terrifyingly powerful couple in the world. ~ Cas.

I'm so freaking obsessed with you Karlee! I love the way you write.

Let's start with the fact that Shrike picks up right where Albatross leaves us absolutely HANGING (how dare you)!! But for real, so much thanks for not torturing us (too much).

Bel freaking BLOSSOMS in Shrike. Bb gworl grows in leaps and bounds and her beautiful, terrifying demons let 👏🏻 their 👏🏻 girl 👏🏻 shine yall!!

This was a perfect follow up to Albatross!

The spice was freaking ON PAR! A1 steak sauce!! So freaking good! 👌🏻🤌🏻

•Fritz's vulnerability
•Daddy Cas' possessiveness
•Stern daddy Eamon
•Isla's hilarity and fierceness 👏🏻👏🏻
•Bel's growth!

I mean here’s the thing, it’s not the worst book I’ve ever read. It’s probably like a 1.75 almost 2 stars but truly nothing happens and it’s just sex which is like fine I guess but the first book was much better. Also I find it weird how Fritz and Caspian say, multiple times, that they are “soul brothers who just like to fuck” like ???? It just felt like she was almost there with them and someone proofread it and said “too gay!” So she changed it to have them not be in love also. I want to emphasize that they called each other soul BROTHERS. I personally would not fuck my brother but I guess that’s just me.

This book picked up where book 1 leaves off. We get to meet up with Cas, Fritz & Bel as they continue to try and put an end to the bad guys. It’s great to see the relationship between them develop as they start to settle into it. Isla & Eamon provides some funny moments as she keeps denying any interest in him, while he keeps appearing where she doesn’t want him. Hopefully we get more from them. This book had a great storyline but did feel a bit rushed in places and hopefully with the way it ended we will get to find out more in future books.

This book is spicyyy omg I loved it so much! Amazing plot. Like the first book this one had me hooked. I love the characters. Fritz ugh swoon worthy, he had me blushing.

Thank goodness this book picked up right where Albatross ended! I couldn't have waited!

I loved watching the relationship between Bel, Cas, and Fritzy grow further. It was so well done and made the overall storyline so much better.

I totally devoured this duet in just a couple days and definitely recommend for supernatural/ monster lovers!

I am definitely excited to see what the next book in the series will be!

I read up until the line from the reel I saw, then stopped for like three weeks, and finally made myself finish it this week. It was good, I liked all the characters. There were points where I would roll my eyes because someone was acting over the top, or something seemed like an overreaction, but I think the book was mostly just fun. I wasn't super invested in the drama story line, I feel like there wasn't enough of it that was explained to really be that invested in it. It felt out of place in an otherwise very goofy and light hearted (and spicy) book.
I will most likely read the spin off books I know are coming, and I'll probably enjoy them too.

I finished book 1 (Albatross) and IMMEDIATELY needed to read book 2. Book 2 is a little darker and a lot spicier than book 1. Chapter 12 will live in my head rent free for the rest of my days 🥵. I really loved the story but ended up rating it 4 stars because I was wanting a little more of the feminine rage I was hoping to see after the ending of book 1.

I cannot wait to continue the story with Harpy!!
