Kim Hunt Harris is the award-winning author of the Trailer Park Princess comic mystery series.
Kim knew she wanted to be a writer before she even knew how to write. When her parents read bedtime stories to her, she knew she wanted to be a part of the story world. She started out writing children’s stories, and her stories grew as she did. She discovered a gift for humor and a love for making people laugh with her tales, and the Trailer Park Princess series was born.
Kim loves to not only make her readers laugh and entertain them with a good mystery, but also to examine the issues the everyday people face…well, every day. Issues like faith and forgiveness, perseverance and tolerance. Set in Lubbock, Texas, the fun books feature a cast of quirky characters, outrageous situations, a drama queen of a dog, and from time to time, a tear or two.
Kim lives with her husband of more than thirty years and two teenage kids in Texas.
I've read the whole series. Normally, I wouldn't read a book that was heavily involved with religion, but the religion here is seen mostly in how Salem tries to become one of the "good people". She's seen good people, but she's never known good people personally. Now she's in jail for her 3rd DUI and is terrified that she's going to prison. She meets Les, who seems to have it all together; he's 100% positive that God loves him and will always show him the way. He asks Salem if she'd like to find God. He tells her that God loves her, too. She has never had anyone in her life who loved her or looked after her or wanted to take care of her. Maybe, if she can sober up and try to become a responsible person, she can be one of the "good people." She can have a job, a home, and someone who loves her. It's really funny and sometimes sad how Salem goes about trying to understand what God might want from her in her quest to be a good person. She stumbles a lot. She tries to make deals. She questions. When she accidentally steals the wrong tiny little dog from a dog flipper, she ends up losing the job she's only had for one day because she now has to spend her time trying to find the real owner. And, worse, she's finally found someone to love in the body of a teensy, tiny white fluffy puppy that she's going to have to give back when she finds the real owner. She is pretty certain that this is not what she was praying for when she asked for His help. This isn't the kind of religious book that can be a big turnoff. It's the hilarious, sad, stumbling, story of a sweet, caring, naive, alcoholic young woman who gets into trouble as she searches for what she thinks God wants her to do so she can become one of the good people. Having come from a life of zero love and full-blown addiction and abuse, she's clueless as to how she can do that. Salem is such a likable character. With all of her faults, she tries so hard. She wants to do good and be good. But it's hard. The only thing I didn't like in this book was that Stump wasn't with Salem yet. When she found Stump, she found her perfect dog. This series is a gem.
Flipping Out is the prequel to the Trailer Park Princess series. Salem Grimes wakes up in the drunk tank of the police station with one of the inmates telling her she killed someone while driving while intoxicated. Salem gets into a program that includes the AA program which will be her last chance to stay out of prison. Her killing someone turned out to not be true, but, she's still facing mandatory jail time as this is her third strike with a DUI. One of the other girls in the cell is telling Salem about her missing dog, and after getting out of prison herself, ropes Salem into helping retrieve her dog that turns out to be the wrong dog setting Salem up on the road to breaking a pet flipping ring between at least two different cities in Texas.
This story has developed characters and a solid plotline with a bit of humor. I read this story as an Advanced Reader's Copy and all opinions are my own.
Fun Intro to Fun Series This book is the introduction to a very fun series. The overall story is about a wreck of a young woman who is an alcoholic in recovery and has just found Jesus. She is still a wreck, but she is trying very hard to do things right. She has a crazy grandmother, a crazy older friend, and a solid Christian leader who is helping her in her faith journey and helping her stay sober. There is so much to laugh at in this book and in the entire series. I would have to rate this book and the series with a solid PG for adult topics and angst.
(Disclaimer - received book as an ARC). Loved my 1st read of The Trailer Park series. I have been meaning to read them and I am glad I finally did it. If you like the Cherry Tucker series you will love this one too! I will say it has a slight Christianity twist of redemption with God and I'm good with that. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and seeing where the adventures of these quirky characters bring us.
I love this author's expressive and authentic writing style! Her stories express the dark stormy reality of the main character's traumatic life experience while painting a rainbow of hope through faith in God and a sprinkle of humor! If you enjoyed the previous Trailer Park Princess stories; you will love the fast paced adventure in this book! Enjoy!
I was an instant fan of the Trailer Park Princess from Book One! I have read all of this hilarious, wise, and action packed series to date. It's a must read especially if you want to know what Lubbock is really like, because Harris gets it all right. I have lived in Lubbock for 37 years and I have never seen a novel of any genre that is set here. Salem Grimes is a heroine of epic proportions and please buy these books!
I've read the rest of the series. this is how Salem woke up and decided to choose a new path in life. She's strong but faces obstacles in everyday life. I laughed and cryed, cheering her on. You may not share her struggle, but its about life. This book was well worth the wait. Pick up this one then continue on. Great job Kim!
This interesting prequel gives us insight into how Salem met Les and found sobriety and god. The mystery she solves is entertaining and previews G-ma and the dog groomers we will get to know in subsequent books.
I was provided an ARC copy of this book and am providing an unbiased review.
