This is a hauntingly poetic story that delves deep into the human psyche, exploring themes of identity, sacrifice, and the supernatural. Set in the late 19th century, the story follows a complex character, Tommaso, who returns to his ancestral homeland in Tuscany, Italy, in search of his identity. What he discovers are secrets, a dark family history, and a haunting legacy that binds him to a chilling fate.
Each chapter offers a glimpse into Tommaso's life and the forces that shape his existence. Saltoris employs gorgeously lyrical prose to create a sense of tension throughout the story. The rich descriptions of the Tuscan landscape and its characters add a lot of character to the story, immersing the reader in this world. This is a story with elements of horror, but I think a more apt description would be to call it gothic. It’s atmospheric and immersive. There are no “jump scares” to be found here.
I love the dynamic between Tommaso and Francesca. Their interactions are charged with emotional intensity, desire, and an unspoken connection that makes their relationship seem realistic and believable. The chemistry between the two characters is electric.

This is such a haunting and atmospheric book, it's filled with dark secrets, supernatural elements, and a touch of mysticism. Chapter 1 sets the tone for the story by introducing Tommaso’s traumatic past and his complex relationship with religious prayers. The power of Hail Marys and the contrast with the painful memories of Our Fathers are vividly depicted. This serves as a strong opening, drawing me into his world of inner turmoil and introspection.
As the story progresses, it dives into Tommaso’s return to his Tuscan roots, his interactions with Francesca, and his work as a photographer of the deceased. The story skillfully blends elements of mystery, romance, and the supernatural, keeping me engaged and curious. The characters are well-developed, with Francesca adding depth and intrigue to the story. The tension and chemistry between Tommaso and Francesca provide a captivating dynamic that adds an element of romantic suspense to the plot.
