On kobo - epub via Kickstarter ISBN 9781956463309 (195/233 pages)

Taking as inspiration The Curse of the Baskervilles, Chapter Two of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Conan Doyle here reprinted, this engaging collection of stories ranges widely across the globe and while mostly remaining in a Victorianesque steampunk timeframe ventures outside that period once or twice. Possibly one of the most memorable sentences in fiction, 'Mr Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!' is used to full effect - here we have hounds (in a generic sense) both supernatural/spectral and artificial - and possibly one or two 'normal' ones as well. In keeping with the nature of the original we have several investigations as well - one or two referring explicitly to the Conan Doyle canon (and there is a Holmes/Watson story); part of the enjoyment is recognising the originals, however oblique such references are. For my money I relished the other famous Doyle character, Professor Challenger, who appears with his Lost World companions. And in one story there is a Doyle - but that's just a passing reference, just a name and not signifying anything too major.

Splendid stuff - I thoroughly enjoyed this collection! (Possibly not to everyone's taste, though, if one is a Sherlock Holmes purist.)

"A Cry of Hounds" is gothic collection of short stories sure to goose your flesh! These stories draw their inspiration from the more supernatural side of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories. Most notably, 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.

The majority of these tales are mysteries laced with Steampunk elements, which give them an extra kick. A few stories vear off into paranormal fantasy. But the one element all stories share is the presence of a Hound-in one form or another. In fact, this anthology utilizes just about every Hound imaginable from superstition and folklore. .

These mysteries are thrillingly creepy and though provoking. The Hounds, in most cases, are terrifying; but in some stories-they're fun. The variety of storytelling had me eager for each new entry. But it's the 'hounds' element which gives these stories cohesion.

I particularly enjoyed the entries which were supernatural in nature. Tales such as these are shrouded in fog with the baying of hounds filling the air. These elements, along with the Victorian settings, gave me the same thrill I felt when I first read Sherlock Holmes.

Coincidentally, this anthology ends with an all new original Sherlock Holmes story! This macabre mystery is brought to you by acclaimed Holmes author Christopher D. Abbott, and it's the perfect way to end this compilation.

Doyle's influence is evident throughout this book. From mild references in various stories, to the usage of characters-such as Professor Challenger!

'Hounds' offers up a great bach of stories laced with gothic atmosphere, supernatural scariness, and Steampunk spectacle! I highly recommend this anthology to anyone who enjoys Sherlock Holmes or Steampunk. You definitely get your bang for your buck!
