This is a great book, for what it is, and like most books, it would be a disappointment if you were looking for something else. So, let me share my experiences of this book.
Personally, I would not call it a handbook. For me, handbook connotes an academic of intellectual treatise full of footnotes and citations. A handbook, for me, is something that experts keep on their shelves to refer to from time to time. That is not what this book is.
Instead, I experienced this as a guidebook to people starting off on a self-help journey exploring somatic practices. It provides a helpful map of the journey into somatic practices, laying the groundwork and providing examples. If you’ve done a bit of somatic work already, you might find parts of the book repetitive.
If what you are looking for is a guidebook to help you get started, this is an excellent resource. Spend time exploring the practices the book presents. Like the journey of healing, you may find this book a resource that you’ll want to come back to from time to time as you make progress and as you look to deepen your practices.
If you are curious about somatic practices, if you are looking for ideas on how to get started, or enrich your practices, I strongly recommend this book. Likewise, if you aren’t sure what somatic practices are, I’d encourage you to pick up this book and learn more. In can be very helpful in your journey.
Note: I received an advanced readers copy of this book to review prior to the books release. The opinions I have expressed here are my own.
