Theo Returning from Texas after summer break, which I spent working, and training, I expected a temperature change. Hell, I welcomed the chill, but I didn’t expect to be completely frozen out by the only chick at Lincoln University who I thought about almost as much as I do hockey.

When I saw Riley Park for the first time, the universe shifted. Which sounds completely lame, but I take issues with liars; therefore, I refuse to be one.

I, Theo Rivera, was enchanted by her.

Was? Yeah. Because now… now I’m just pissed .

Riley

Theo Rivera is six-foot-four to my five-foot-two. The first boy who made my heart do The Biles II—a triple double on the floor for those unfamiliar. And just like every time I attempt to stick that landing… let’s just leave it at that.

Moving on…

My hockey era has come to an end, much earlier than I foolishly hoped it would. But I’m not a naïve freshman anymore with stars in her eyes over a *cough* HAF puck boy *cough*. Nope, I have written it down, a promise to Simone, and manifested it; therefore, it’s official.

I, Riley Park, am now a football fan .

Flip Shot by MJ Fields is book 4 in the Taking The Shot Series. This is the story of Riley and Theo. Theo is a hockey player heading towards the NHL wanting to make a better life for him and the family. Riley is a gymnast who is little but mighty. Theo has been taken with Riley from the start and is somewhat obsessed. This was a good friends to lover romance.

This is the fourth book in the series but my first one for this author. Now I need to go back and read the previous books in the series. This can be read as a standalone (I did) but I did feel like it would have been a little better if I knew the other characters mentioned. They are involved quite a bit throughout the story. It's a pretty tight friend group. However, not reading the previous books will not reduce the enjoyment in this one. At least, it didn't for me.
This follows Theo and Riley. Theo is a really nice guy hockey player that is tall and a bit lanky, so he's mistaken for a player on a different sports team regularly and gets slightly annoyed by it. Riley is a gymnast and determined to spend her year unleashing her inner vixen with players on other teams not including hockey.
The two of them danced around each other and did some text flirting for a while until Riley ghosts Theo during the summertime. After they return to school, they are always running into each other since they are in the same friend groups. Both are very likeable characters and relatable. The banter and tension between them is so good. It's definitely a slow burn but so rewarding.

I'm going to go back and read the previous books in the series and I'm looking forward to more being added! Definitely excited to continue this series.

I received a free ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily.

4 Star review of Flip Shot (Taking The Shot #4) by M.J. Fields

Book four in the Taking the Shot series and is Theo Rivera and Riley Park’s story. I’m not a huge fan of NA/YA stories but Flip Shot was well written and entertaining.

Theo is besotted by Riley and is shocked when she appears to freeze him out. From the moment he first saw her, he was hooked. The chemistry between them is intense and it was fun to watch as they did their best to ignore it.

This is a heartwarming. emotional story, with whose story you will become invested in If you enjoy NA/YA stories then this will be right up your street.

As always I love this book! Theo is a gorgeous college hockey player. Riley was a gymnast and is exploring other sports.
They were friends and of course became friends again. They fall in love and she is his biggest fan ❤️. This book has a great storyline and just like all of MJ Fields books it’s so well written, it’s like watching your favorite television series! But on cable tv!
I enjoyed reading this entire series but omg this is such a good one! Oh and the Epilogue is priceless!!!
I love this series and can’t wait to read more!

I have been rooting for Theo and Riley since Long Shot (book #1 in the Lincoln U series.) It was nice to finally see them get their moment.

Theo is a hockey player for LU and has had a crush on Riley since they first met. Obsessed with his car and making it to the NHL to help support his mom and siblings, he is pressed to find that the girl he has feelings for has moved on once he gets back from summer break.

Riley is a gymnast who is grappling with the fact that her gymnastics career will soon be over when she graduates in two years. She has had a crush on Theo since meeting him her freshman year through her sorority big sis Ellie (fmc in book #1.)  She is fierce and not afraid to stand up for herself or those around her.

Flip Shot is pretty low spice and super super slow burn. The majority of the book the MC’s are angry at each other for not communicating and Riley tries to become a football girlie instead of a hockey one. It was cute to see Riley losing her v-card to Theo and the way they were able to be comfortable enough in each other's presence to laugh and joke afterwards without it being awkward.

I loved that both MCs were POC and that bits of their culture and experience being first generation children of immigrants was shown. I also loved that once again MJ had disability representation in her books with the addition of deaf characters and ASL.

Seeing cameos of some of the characters from previous books was the best, they really added comic relief and a fun sense of where are they now plots that I loved. Dean no matter what the plot will always add a laugh.

Compared to the rest of the series, Flip Shot, felt very rushed and like so many plot lines were started but not followed through with or were just forgotten about. I also feel like the author put too many political undertones into this book after there were not any in the previous books in the series, which I found off putting. Theo comes off as kind of a jerk after being so sweet in all the other stories and seemed very out of character. This unfortunately knocked it down a bit in stars for me personally.

I am anxiously looking forward to reading the final book about Dean and his situationship this winter!

Thank you MJ and Wordsmith for the opportunity to receive an ARC Flip Shot. The entire review and ratings are my own opinion.

Settle In Grab on tight and prepare yourself to he wowed . Because Riley and Theos journey makes you feel like you’re on the wildest ride at the amusement park . Flip Shot is everything, i mean everything. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that plays on all your emotions in ways you won’t even be expecting. You’ll experience everything from being utterly speechless, to yelling outta pure frustration. Your heart will feel like it’s beating so fast and then bam belong crushed the next , you’ll be glued to the edge of your seat anticipating what will happen from one second to the next . And you’ll find yourself rooting so freaking hard . I just adored both Theo and Riley so freaking much . In mean what’s not to love a strong , confident and feisty heroine who also happens to be a kick&&s gymnast and a oh so swoony hockey player who has a heart of gold, a loving brother , a awesome friend and someone who would go above and beyond to protect his family . Truth is I’m a little obsessed with him . Without going into to much detail because trust me when I say this is definitely one journey you want to go into with an open mind, no spoilers at all and just experience all its perfection for yourself . I’ll simply say this is so much more then your typical sports romance. It’s so beautifully written and emotionally charged . Sure it’s fun and sexy and steamy . Sure it’s filled with witty banter , angst , humor , passion , unexpected surprises, family and friendships . But at its core its a journey about pursuing your dreams , about overcoming tragedy , about love , and friendship and second chances . MJ Fields has once again exceeded all my expectations. She nailed it and delivered one of the best books I’ve read this year 💜💜💜💜💜

What a great addition to this world! This is a friends to lovers hockey romance that's perfect for those in between heavy reads.

Theo, love him. He is so completely obsessed with Riley, and she doesn't even know it. I love it when friends turn into lovers because a foundation has been built, and it's obvious from the beginning that Theo and Riley have a connection. Theo as a person, I really like him, the way he cares about his friends and family is beautiful. He has unfortunately gone through some hardships, and it's made him who is and makes him think about others.

Riley, yes, yes, and yes! She is a 5 foot 2 spitfire, and I love her! I love her friendships. They are always there for each other and make time for each other. I like that Theo was able to break through those barriers and build that trust. The only thing that sucks is that it takes them so long to move into more, but I think it fits their story perfectly.

Theo and Riley together are so cute! I really love them. Their chemistry is amazing, and they match each other so well.

Read this book ASAP!

Thank you so much to MJ and the amazing team at Wordsmith Publicity for giving me the opportunity to ARC read. All opinions are honest and my own 🩷🩷🩷

Ugh, I have been waiting for Theo and Riley since they were hinted at in Long Shot, but they were so worth the wait!

Riley and Theo first meet in freshman year, when their honorary older siblings get together (Ellie and Leo!). They're both immediately smitten with each other, but are too shy and nervous to take it much further than texting each other. For years.

Two years later and Riley is determined to move on from Theo, and subsequently declares herself a Football Girlie rather than a Hockey one. Theo isn't aware that Riley is moving on, and is confused by the cold shoulder she's giving him. Despite her resolve, the two just can't stay away from each other, and after a particularly hilarious serenade on the part of drunk Theo, they get their second chance.

I adored these two characters! Riley's got gumption, determination, and won't take anyone's shit - all winning characteristics in my book. And Theo is just the absolute SWEETEST, the literal definition of a cinnamon roll. He's so honest and sincere and the perfect match for Riley.

I love the representation and inclusion in this as well. Both Theo and Riley are POC, and are first gen kids of immigrants (which influences their story!). There's also a few characters who have hearing disabilities, and we see both Theo and Riley communicating in ASL numerous times.

Thank you to MJ Fields and Wordsmith for the opportunity to receive this ARC and read it early! Flip Shot comes out TOMORROW, October 29!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book, provided by WordSmith PR. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

That epilogue had me blubbering! Oh my gosh, what an ending. I love this series so much, and while I'm sad to see it end, this ending was so sweet. Lincoln has felt like home with all of the love and camaraderie between all the characters. They are truly a found family. Theo's protectiveness over Riley almost rivals Dean's. It was so sweet to hear Theo's thoughts about Riley - and he is so in love haha

After something that maybe could be a thing, Theo and Riley head back home for the summer. When they return, Riley is harboring some ill feelings over a few things and she decides a relationship with Theo will never happen - only Theo doesn't know that haha I think my favorite part is the karaoke at Bleachers, and how Theo asked Riley to drive them all home. Man, I kinda swooned a little. Nevermind that Riley was on a date with someone else! But that's ok, that guy kinda showed his true colors, and his friends were jerky jerks.

I love that all the characters from the previous books pop in and out of the story in a natural flow, and not just because the author wanted to drop them in. I sure will miss this era of Lincoln, but I have enjoyed every single second of it! And like I said, that epilogue - oh man, that took me out. The emotion of 2020, plus the emotion of having to close this series just got to me. Worth every second, tho.

This latest installment of this series was a pretty good read that can be read as standalone read just like the others in the series but is good to read all the other books of the series so that one is familiar with the supporting characters.

In this latest read we get Theo and Riley's story. The pair started out as friends, but Riley decides that she needs to move on from what she perceives as a would have been a relationship. She decides to become a football girl while also coming to terms with the end of her gymnastics career and going through college life - sorority duties and scholastic responsibilities.

Theo, hockey star and devoted to his family in light of the tragedies that his family has gone through. He has feelings for Riley and is determined to have her return to being a hockey fan - mostly his hockey fan.

The chemistry between the pair has been nothing short of off the charts. The banter between the characters was enjoyable and their story moved along well. I enjoyed the return of the characters from the previous books as they are a tight knit group as well as the cameo appearances from favorite characters from other popular series. Overall, this was a good read that I enjoyed from start to finish and would recommend just like the rest of the books in this series to others.

Flip Shot - Taking The Shot #4 - Review

Author: M.J. Fields

Couple: Riley & Theo

Tropes: hockey romance, college romance, enemy to lover, second chance, sports romance, second chance romance

Review: Make way for Theo! I loved his character in the previous books but man did his story do him justice! His hate-love relationship with Riley when they run into each other again was to die for! I enjoyed book was filled with raw and real feelings on both their ends and felt like they both had demons they tried to hide.

While Theo gave the impression of a happy go lucky player, we see a different side of him in this book and man did I love every page. MJ dives into the bonds his family has and go his past affected him and I enjoyed getting that background. I also found the draw he had towards Riley too,be hilarious and ironic since they both tried to deny feelings they had.

Riley on the other hand is a fiery FMC. I loved how she w a fellow athlete and took no crap from Theo. I also enjoyed how she tried to become a football fan even though we all knew her heart was hockey. The growth she had in this book really added a level of tension between them and I am sad to see this series end!

Rating: 10/10, Theo is hands down the hockey book boyfriend for this series!

Flip Shot is the fourth book in the Taking the Shot series by M.J. Fields, featuring a fun second chance hockey romance for Theo and Riley. Theo and Riley connected quickly last year, but something happened to cause Riley to ghost him, and Theo Rivera is not happy about being left on read! Can he get through to her, before she moves on to someone else?

I really enjoyed the return to this fictional world! Both Theo and Riley were relatable and so lovable! Their connection was obvious, their banter was infectious and fun, and their chemistry was just right! Riley’s journal added an interesting layer to the story. Who knew Theo could be such a romantic? Gah!😍😍 It was great to see all the previous characters we know and love and some new ones as well. I can’t wait to see what direction that next book takes!😉

M.J. Field’s book, Flip Shot: A Friends to Lovers, Hockey Romance (Taking The Shot Book 4), is a romance between friends who had a falling out to become lovers who fall for each other. I love that M J Fields writes about characters from different cultures and with varying degrees of disability, whether it is hearing loss or a sports injury, which adds authenticity to her books. Flip Shot is about former friends Riley, a gymnast, and Theo, a hockey player, who have common friends, so they find themselves hanging out at social events. Riley freezes out Theo because of something she sees. Meanwhile, Theo is determined to change Riley’s mind this year in college. Attempting to manage college drama, viral videos, jealousy attempts, including family drama, and making lifetime decisions all make for a fun read. The embedded love story has all the feels once barriers crumble and true feelings emerge. With a HEA, no cheating or cliffhanger, M J Fields has written an extraordinary hockey romance series. I cannot wait to read the next book to be published, Holiday Hat Trick, about three side characters from the hockey romance Taking the Shot series.

Flip Shot is Book four in the Taking the Shot series. This was my introduction to this series.
Theo is returning to Lincoln University after summer break. He spent the summer wondering why the girl he liked left him on read mode. Riley is on a mission during her sophomore year at college, to get over the hockey boy she was flipping for. Riley decides to go from a puck bunny to a football groupie. Theo and Riley run in the same circle of friends and he is determined not to let her ice him out.

I enjoyed this book. I loved that Riley and Theo come from two different words. I am from MA and I enjoyed a few references used in the book. Theo and Riley’s friends were a vital part of this story. It would be useful to read the other 3 just so you know the relationships in the group. This book is a stand alone friends to lovers second chance romance. The tension and back and forth between them is good, the spicy is a 2/4. The story had representation from varied groups. We had first generation kids of immigrants, characters with different hearing disabilities, and ASL communicators.

Flip Shot by @mjfieldsbooks

Theo falls for Riley but after a summer apart and being ghosted, can Theo figure out what happens before Riley moves on?

This is the fourth book in the series but the first one I have read. This is also my first book overall from this author. This book can be read as a standalone but I would have know the other characters more if I would have read the other three books as well. I really liked this book but I mean I am a sucker for hockey romances too.

Theo the MMC is so sweet and caring until he needs to protect Riley or those he loves. Theo also fell for Riley and he wants to be the right man for her.

Riley the FMC is a fiery gymnast who has decided to leave hockey boys behind, and start looking for a football player. She fell for Theo when they were friends but he never made a move.

Riley and Theo

What happens when a gymnast and hockey player come together ….. sparks. Riley and Theo have had this mutual attraction for each other but had not acted on it. They DM’d and flirted, but some lines became blurry and they find each other somewhat at odds. What I love about MJ’s books is she finds a way to make you feel so intrigued with just the right story plot and just the right amount of spice. Their love story just proves that when you’ve found the right one you just know. I LOVE how Theo is so caring and almost too much, but Riley doesn’t let him decide and dictate everything. What I really love is when Lucas and Tessa made an appearance!!! I ABSOLUTELY love her Blue Valley series, so to tie them together is amazing and exciting.

I loved Theo and Riley's story all the up to the Epilogue. I was almost in tears over that. Grrr. I am not going to tell you what it is, but you will want to cry, too.

Riley has given up on her crush on Theo Rivera and decided to ditch hockey players for football, or any sport that wasn't hockey. After seeing him with Drew following the Frozen Four victory, she decided she was mistaken about him being into her. So, football players were on the menu.

Theo is not sure why Riley started freezing him out, but he sure would like to know what he did wrong so he could fix it. Perhaps the drunken karaoke with Koa was not his finest moment, but convincing Riley to drive them all home in his Tahoe was genius. Finally, a chance to kiss her...

These two are so sweet together. Theo is a peach and Riley will soon go back to liking hockey at least as much as football, if not as much as gymnastics. Still bummed about the epilogue, but it was what it was - for all of us.

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

After summer break has ended, Theo is leaving Texas for college. He spent the entire summer working and training. His first love is hockey and now he is off to Lincoln University. He is totally expecting the temperature change where he is going. But he sure never expected to be frozen out totally by the girl who has caught his eye. Riley Park shifted his universe the first time he saw her. He quickly finds himself enchanted with her. But now, things have changed and he is pissed.
Riley for her part felt the same way about Theo the first time she saw him. She use to be a huge hockey fan but now she has changed over to football and this could be a real problem since Theo is obsessed with hockey. Riley is a gymnast. She is small but mighty. These two quickly become friends but they have a journey to more than friends and this is that story. I liked these characters. This book was a good read too. If you a hockey romancing loving kind of girl then your going to love this book.

4/5⭐️

This was probably my least favorite out of the series but it’s still good. There was just a lot of names to try and keep up with and it was making my brain hurt haha

This is about Theo and Riley.

These two are super cute together once they get over the hurdle.

They were talking a lot and then all of a sudden she ghosted him. Read his messages and never responded and he has no idea why…

They run into each other at school and end up having class together.

He makes it a point to let her know that he still has feelings and they are indeed going to happen…

He is super sweet.
I love the name he calls her.

Finally finished the series! First of all, I want to say this is a good series, so good that I finished 1 book each day.

At first, I was hoping this was Dean and Drew book's because I'm shipping them in the previous book but turns out it's Theo's story. I have seen him in the previous book and I'm gonna say that I like him, even one of the book's boyfriends 👀
His story is great, I was worry we wouldn't see much of the previous characters because Theo is their junior and the other boys had already graduated but luckily we still see them a bunch of times! so it's not really a bummer. Also, the conclusions gave a really good wrap-up for the series so it's a win for me.

[3.5/5] Riley and Theo had been building towards something, but things cooled off and Riley ghosted by the time summer break came. Now they are back for the semester and Riley is committed to making the most of collegiate gymnastics career and staying away from hockey players.

Theo has completely fallen for Riley and won’t let her attempts to get over him deter him from proving he is worthy of her trust and can break through her barriers. Riley spends a lot of time journaling and making promises to ‘Simone Biles’ as a way to manifest what she wants for herself in her gymnastics career and in her life. I loved getting to see glimpses of the other characters from previous books in the series!

Flip Shot is the final book in the Taking The Shot series and is Theo and Riley’s story.

I’m sad that this is the end of this series - this series really is a must read!
Although every book is a standalone, I loved how in this and the other books, their characters pop up every now and then in each.

This was a slow burn between Theo and Riley, they’re friends both in the sporting world - Theo and NHL hopeful and Riley a gymnast - albeit Theo wants more, but Riley is keeping away because of something she saw, but with the chemistry between them Theo’s not giving up on them being together.

I love the banter between them and Riley really gives you LOL moments, even giving drunk Theo a run for his money lol.

I find all of MJ’s books are page turners and this is no different! It’s 5 ⭐️ from me.

Riley & Theo’s story was everything I was hoping for. These 2 characters have so much chemistry, that their love story couldn’t be denied.

Theo is the definition of a sweet and caring brother and friend. After his family suffers an unimaginable tragedy, the way he is determined to make his way is admirable. I love how he is with his sister Olivia.

Riley has so much going for her. An elite gymnast and scholar in her own right, she is looking for Mr. Right. Theo makes it impossible for her to not give them another chance. She also has many hidden talents.

4 1/2 amazing stars. I loved this book from start to finish. The fact that we still get to see some of our favorite characters from previous books is a plus for me. The dynamic this group of friends has is unshakable. They show what friendship and family is all about.

This is the fourth book in Taking The Shot Series about Riley and Theo. Riley is a gymnast and Theo is a hockey player. Theo is a hockey player for LU and has had a crush on Riley since they first met. Obsessed with his car and making it to the NHL to help support his mom and siblings and Riley is a strong girl who stands up for herself. Riley is determined to fall for someone other than Theo and starts to become a football fan. Theo isn't aware that Riley is moving on, and is confused by the cold shoulder she's giving him. Despite her resolve, the two just can't stay away from each other. He doesn’t give up without a fight. Hockey season hasn’t started yet, so the hockey team has been supporting the football team. There were some interesting dynamics. Especially when Riley goes on a date with defensive end Oz Hunt. I enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read the next book..

Flip Shot by MJ Fields.

We are on the fourth book of this series and you guys I have been enjoying each one in a different way. I love following each couple through their journey so far and now we are getting the chance to follow Theo and Riley. Their journey will definitely take you on one wild roller coaster ride but it is one of those really crazy ones that you can’t wait to get on again. It will definitely get be one well worth emotional rollercoaster playing all of your emotions. You will want to cry, scream and laugh all at one point through the story. You will wan to turn page after page to know what happens next all while your heart rate is extremely fast. You will definitely love Theo and Riley and every we meet along the way. Highly recommended book and series.

A New MJ Fields book will always put a smile on my face but when we meet Riley & Theo it just gets better.
Riley is a sophomore at Lincoln University, a gymnast, a Sorority Sister and all around great friend but when Theo Rivera is in the picture things just happen.
Theo is a star hockey player for the Lincoln Lions but he’s also a wonderful son who will do whatever it takes to help his family but when Riley keeps him on read he knows he has to find out why and fix it because she is just someone you don’t let go.
Theo & Riley are meant to be together they compliment the other but they also know how to steam up the pages when they are together. Watching them become a couple is fantastic and knowing they can find that HEA is the icing on the cake.

Riley is a fiery gymnast who has decided to leave her hockey boy era, and start on her football boy era. She pined for Theo when they were friends, she thought there could be more but he never made a move.

Theo pines for her too. He wants to be the right man for her. Can he convince her to go back to her hockey boy era or is it over before they even begun?

This book is the fourth in the Taking the Shot series, can be read as a stand-alone but you’ll benefit from reading the whole series as past characters make strong appearances in this one.

Theo and Riley know what they want, and when they finally let down their walls, they both are all in. This quick and easy to read book has the banter, the steam and the fun you want in a college hockey romance book.

I’m so happy to read Theo’s story! I’ve been waiting for him to get his chance and I loved his story with Riley and the slow build of it. Riley made me laugh and her dear Simone entries were great. Theo, here I thought he was a sweet, good guy…maybe not so much but that’s okay! Drunk Theo was hilarious and with Koa (I need his story so bad) in the bar IYKYK.

It was great to read about previous characters as it made the overall story line work so well and I am always wanting more! I’m looking forward to the next book with Drew, Dean and Cody!

I highly recommend this series, if you like low angst, college romance with a dash of steam, and a HEA.

Theo and Riley had an attraction and flirtation and then one day… poof, Riley ghosts Theo with no explanation. Only, he isn’t one to give up so easily.

Oh sweet, sweet Theo Rivera. I loved the way he cared for his family, the way he knew he wasn’t always a man he was proud of and worked to be better, the way he falls so hard for Riley and isn’t afraid to show her.

Riley is a firecracker. She takes no crap, is a great friend, and once she sees how good a person Theo is, realizes she messed up and gets her man back.

Even though most of the MMCs in the previous books are now in the pros, I loved seeing them all have cameos and reinforce that found family vibe I love so much from this series. And the way this one ends and leads us into a Drew/Dean/Cody book next… I can’t wait!

I went back and forth between giving us a three-star review and a four star review. Ultimately four stars, one because of the chemistry between the two characters.

At the beginning I had a difficult time keeping track of the characters. There were so many that had similar names that it was hard to keep them straight. After reading this story I found out that this was actually part of the series. Reading the series would probably help, but I did fine without it. I did expect more hockey action for Theo and more gymnast action for Riley. While there was a lot of mention of hockey, it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Overall Riley and Theo had really great chemistry which is how I decided to give this four stars. They were great together.
