A delightfully charming romantic comedy about a boy who only has eyes for the girl who always forgets her glasses!
To help Mie remember her glasses, Komura and Mie call each other in the mornings. Azuma asks Komura for advice on a crush but is shocked Komura and Mie aren't going out yet. After Mie entrusts Komura with her spare glasses, she realizes she's forgetting her glasses less often. This young relationship reaches a pivotal moment!
Mie needs to stop forgetting her glasses and Komura is here to help. Between morning phone calls and evaluating Mie’s room, the two are closer than ever, so why are the words so hard to get out?
As much as I joke that this series wore me down to the point where I now rather like it, I do think it’s true that the writing got substantially better as we went along. There are some strong moments throughout this one that make it a really fun volume.
And I mean fun. Some of the gags in this series, infrequent though they might be, are so solid that they actually made me laugh. Mie’s accidentally opening Komura up to having a big brother fetish is hilarious and his interpretation of Mie’s dad is funny too.
I also love how fantastically reassuring Komura’s mom is. She expertly straddles the line between supportive and smothering, plus she shows that she really knows her kid and how he operates.
A lot of this is Komura finally overcoming his tendency to not bother people and thus put the screws to the story’s overdrawn moment where he confesses. There’s a last minute curveball (which I actually enjoyed) and a couple of fake-outs, and then, finally, a pretty good little moment.
Not the best scene of its type, but far from the worst, it involves two people who have been dating without admitting it for a while (somebody audience surrogates the whole thing earlier on, in fact) and them basically airing all their fears and accepting one another.
There is the worry of what will change and I’m glad that we’ll see some of that change next time out. Mostly I suspect it’ll be a lot more of the stolen glances and near misses that made this an enjoyable volume and we’ll finish it out.
I mean, yes, it’s overwrought. The declaration that they want to love one another forever is really pegging this as middle school romance, or me as a world-weary cynic, so there’s a lot more schmaltz here than is strictly necessary. But, dang it, the kids are having a moment so I won’t pick on them too much.
4 stars - as I said, this series got a lot better from its initial start and a couple missteps. While it took its sweet time getting to the payoff, it was definitely a very sweet time once it got there.
While the premise remains totally absurd the heart is so strong in this story. This volume was full of sweet and tender moments and we finally get the moment we knew was coming and it was done very well.
Omg these two are adorable! I love how Komura’s mom took time to talk to him and gave him the courage to go talk to Mie when he thought she’d rejected him.
It was so sweet when they finally declared their feelings and love for each other. I think the fact that it really hits on all those emotions of a first/new love - the anxiety, worry, love sickness - makes it extra endearing and relatable.
Such a wonderful volume for them to finally admit their love! ❤️

Finally!!! The confession happened! I was afraid they would delay it again, but they finally went through with it. Now with just a couple of volumes left in the series, curious to see the growing love pain they will show.

Well colour me impressed. This series started out a bit meh and repetitive, but it's really come into its own and the author managed to deliver on the long awaited confession scene.
